PhD opportunities on marine mammal cognition, communication and social learning in Australia

We have four PhD projects currently available on marine mammal communication, cognition and social learning in the Cetacean Ecology Group at the University of Queensland, Brisbane. Humpback whale communicative cognition The Cetacean Ecology Group is leading a new study to the hearing range, and hearing sensitivity, of humpback whales. To do this, 'tones' of various frequencies will be played back to humpback whales following on from a previous experiment that found a clear and measurable avoidance response to a 2 kHz tone (Dunlop et al. 2013). Part of this new study will include a 'positive control'; sounds from killer whales. We expect these sounds to elicit a 'fear' response in whales meaning we would expect a clear avoidance respond as soon as they hear them giving us a basis with which to measure the behavioural response to tones. The fact that humpback whales clearly avoided a 2 kHz tone, and this response seemed to be of greater magnitude than was found to previous work using noise from the seismic air gun arrays ((project BRAHSS; https://www.brahss.org.au) may be due to the fact that the2 kHz tones sounded similar to killer whale sounds. In other words, 'tones' and 'killer whale sounds' do not sound like conspecific sounds, and may elicit a more 'fearful' response. The PhD project will compare the behavioural response of humpbacks to tones, killer whale sounds, air guns, and sounds made by conspecifics to test if sound context, familiarity, and 'meaning' could explain differences in observed behavioural responses. You will use data already collected on humpback whale responses to conspecific sounds and air gun sounds (project BRAHSS). In addition, you will be part of the HHARC (Hearing in Humpbacks Acoustic Research Collaboration) project field effort (2021 - 2024) to collect further data on humpback responses to 'tones' and 'killer whale sounds' (Peregian Beach field site). The effects of noise on humpback whale communication behaviour Humpback whales are renowned for their complex communication repertoire. A previous study (project BRAHSS; https://www.brahss.org.au) led by UQ, Curtin University, and the University of Sydney, found that humpback whales changed their migratory behaviour in response to the noise from seismic air guns. However, less is known about how they might change their communication behaviour in response to these sounds. The PhD project will measure if, and how, humpback whale groups change their communication behaviour in the presence of air guns, large vessels, killer whale-like sounds, and conspecifics. You will use data already collected on humpback whale responses to conspecific sounds and air gun sounds (project BRAHSS). In addition, you will be part of the HHARC (Hearing in Humpbacks Acoustic Research Collaboration) project field effort (2021 - 2023) to collect further data on humpback responses to 'tones' and 'killer whale sounds' (Peregian Beach field site). For further information on the field site and earlier studies see previous publications from the group. The use and role of variability in humpback whales' songs While humpback whales in any one population usually conform to a particular song type or pattern, when individual songs are examined in detail, variations can be found. Why do whales vary the structures of their songs? One possibility is that this may, at least partly, be due to social context. Another is that noise may play a role. Variance may also be due to whales improvising, creating small novelties that may be associated with fitness. This PhD will examine individual variance in the songs of east Australian humpback whales and attempt to ascertain the main reasons for variance. This knowledge will create a much better understanding of the origins and importance of variance, and ultimately how this variance may fuel novelties in songs and rapid song evolution. This PhD would suit a student with a background in animal behaviour or ecology. Models of social learning in humpback whales Core to humpback whale song is the idea of social learning, where animals learn behaviours from each other. While there are many examples of animal social learning, few are as rapid and complex as the learning of new songs. While we can easily record and listen to the results of this extraordinary feat of social learning, the underlying process itself is hidden due to it being impossible to study individual whales over extended periods. One powerful way to study invisible processes is through agent-based (or individual-based) models. These have been used in biology for a few decades to study complex systems, especially when the actions of individual animals (agents) can give rise to complex 'emergent' population level behaviours or characteristics. This PhD will involve developing a new agent-based model (ABM) based on the east Australian migratory corridor, and its neighbouring populations (west Australia, Oceania). The model would be used to study social learning rates, impacts of population level on social learning under different migratory scenarios, and, in a link with the 'song variance' PhD on offer, would also be able to explore the development of individual variability and its role in driving song change. Scholarships will be available for high-quality domestic (Australian and New Zealand) students to start in July 2022 and should be available for high-quality international students to start in early 2023. Two new papers from our collaborative research in China: (1) Spotted seal Phoca largha underwater vocalisations in relation to ambient noise, (2) Influence of ice concentration and thickness on under-ice ambient noise levels in shallow coastal waters of Liaodong Bay, China. Dear MARMAM readers, On behalf of my co-authors, I am pleased to share our two new papers: (1) Yang, Liangliang, Xiaomei Xu, and Per Berggren. “Spotted seal Phoca largha underwater vocalisations in relation to ambient noise.” Marine Ecology Progress Series 683 (2022), 209-220. https://doi.org/10.3354/meps13951 Abstract: Animals use different strategies to adjust their vocalisations to compensate for ambient noise interference. This is true for some marine mammals, especially cetaceans, but relatively little is known about this for pinnipeds. This study recorded 4 major call types (drum, growl, knock, and sweep) of spotted seals Phoca largha in Liaodong Bay, China, to investigate if seals adjusted their vocalisation parameters in relation to broadband (50 to 4000 Hz) ambient noise recorded immediately preceding each seal vocalisation. Regression analyses showed that the received level of growls, in both broadband (50-4000 Hz) and 1/3-octave bands centred at 200 and 400 Hz, significantly increased with increasing ambient noise levels. These relationships were not observed in the other 3 call types. Further, regardless of call type, the duration, centroid frequency, and root-mean-squared bandwidth parameters showed no statistical relationship with noise levels. The noise measured in this study had relatively low broadband levels of 116 to 132 dB re 1 µPa, and no masking was predicted for any of the 4 call types at 200 and 400 Hz when applying a standard critical ratio approach. It is therefore possible that the ambient noise levels in the study area were not sufficiently loud to induce vocal compensation to avoid masking, but loud enough for the seals to adjust their growl vocalisations. This study is the first to investigate potential vocal adjustment of spotted seals in relation to ambient noise and is important in light of increasing anthropogenic noise in the marine environment. (2) Yang, Liangliang, Xiaomei Xu, and Per Berggren. “Influence of ice concentration and thickness on under-ice ambient noise levels in shallow coastal waters of Liaodong Bay, China.” Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science 266 (2022): 107706. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecss.2021.107706 Abstract: Underwater noise levels may be strongly influenced by sea ice. This study presents systematic measurements of under-ice ambient noise levels in shallow (<30 m) coastal waters using passive acoustic technology. Acoustic data were collected at 6 sites with different ice concentration (two levels: incomplete and complete ice cover) and thickness (three levels: <10 cm, 10–20 cm and >20 cm) in Liaodong Bay, China. Wind (max = 5.3 m/s) and current (max = 0.3 m/s) conditions were very weak, making minimal contributions to under-ice noise in this study. Root-mean-squared broadband (20–10,000 Hz) noise levels (BNLs) and one-third-octave-band noise levels (TOLs) at 63, 125 and 2000 Hz were measured. Median BNLs of the 6 recording sites ranged from 104.5 to 129.1 dB re 1 μPa, and median TOLs at 63, 125 and 2000 Hz were between 76.5 and 118.0 dB re 1 μPa at the 6 sites. Generalized Linear Models were used to analyze broadband and three one-third-octave-band noise levels in different ice concentration and thickness levels. The results showed that, regardless of the ice thickness, the sites with incomplete ice concentration had higher BNLs and 63, 125 and 2000 Hz TOLs than the sites with complete ice concentration, and regardless of the ice concentration, both BNLs and all three TOLs decreased with increased ice thickness. This study provides baseline characterization of under-ice noise in shallow coastal waters and indicating that both ice concentration and thickness have significant influence on the under-ice noise levels. These findings are important for future studies investigating acoustic communication and noise pollution in shallow coastal waters with sea ice. This paper highlights the first three records of killer whales successfully predating on blue whales, including on a healthy adult. Summary: This seasonal position is responsible for the routine handling and care of animals being housed in the Rehabilitation/Quarantine area under the supervision of the Wildlife Response Curator at the Alaska SeaLife Center. The main focus of this position is marine mammals but there are occasional responses to birds and other wildlife in the Seward area. Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, veterinary science or related field. Two year experience in animal husbandry, experience with marine mammals preferred. Primary Responsibilities: 1. Under the supervision of the Wildlife Response Curator, assists in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation area, quarantine area, and other animal areas in the ASLC. 2. Coordinates with the Wildlife Response Curator and veterinary staff to ensure consistency in the delivery of animal care to animals being housed and cared for in the rehabilitation / quarantine area. 3. Performs routine animal husbandry to include diet preparation, feeding animals, cleaning animal enclosures, disinfecting prep areas and equipment, and maintaining animal records. 4. Follows established routine for animal care, food preparation, and clean up, including proper maintenance and disinfection of equipment. 5. Under the supervision of a veterinarian or a veterinary technician performs basic medical treatments such as delivery of oral medications and wound cleaning and assists in basic medical procedures such as animal restraint for physical exam. 6. Keeps proper records in accordance with the ASLC and permit requirements. 7. As team leader, supervises interns and volunteers to ensure animals are monitored and daily tasks are completed in a timely manner. 8. Participates as needed in presentations to visitors and the public on topics in marine science and ASLC operations. 9. Answers the ASLC’s 24-hour stranding hotline. May be asked to be on call to cover the hotline after regular working hours. Employees are compensated for being on call. 10. Becomes familiar with maintenance and operation of mechanical systems. 11. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service. 12. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs. 13. Performs other duties as assigned. *Irrawaddy Dolphin Research Internship – Coastal Cambodia * Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is an NGO based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. The organisation has many facets, including working to stop illegal fishing practices, ecological and social science research and collecting data to use in the implementation of conservation legislation. In September 2017, MCC introduced The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. The project's primary aim is to collect data on abundance, distribution and residency to delineate and protect critical habitats for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in Cambodia's Kep and Kampot provinces. We are currently looking for dolphin research interns to join the team between March – September 2022! Project activities: - a minimum of 3 observational land surveys per week using a Theodolite and Pythagoras software - a minimum of 1 observational boat survey per week - photo-identification techniques using Discovery software - passive acoustic monitoring using a C-POD and CPOD.exe software - social science techniques - data entry, processing and analysis - education and outreach - running a marine mammal stranding network - scientific writing for peer-reviewed journals and government reports - designing marine mammal legislation Basic internship training schedule Session 1: Introduction to MCC and The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project Session 2: Research method training on observational land and boat surveying techniques Session 3: Marine mammal identification and behaviour training Session 4: Marine vessel identification training Session 5: Data sheet and data entry training Session 6: Drone footage analysis training Session 8: Theory test Session 9: Theodolite introduction and training Session 10: Pythagoras and Theodolite station setting training You will also become involved in other project related activities, depending on your interest, skill set and length of stay. Ideally, we are looking for university students or recent graduates. Project site description: The project is based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, a 40-minute boat trip from Kep Town, Cambodia. The island is inhabited only by MCC, a team made up of a mixture of interdisciplinary international and local staff. The accommodation and facilities on the island are basic but well-maintained. You will be in shared and catered accommodation with fellow interns and staff members. All project related resources are provided. Cascadia Research Collective (CRC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit research and education organization founded in 1979. Most of our research is focused on whale and dolphin populations along the west coast of North America and in Hawaiʻi. CRC is currently filling positions for: Spring 2022 (April-June); deadline to apply is February 15, 2022 Summer 2022 (June-August); deadline to apply is April 15, 2022 Volunteer positions are unpaid, office-based positions in Olympia, WA and housing is not provided. International applicants will also be considered, but it is the responsibility of the applicant to acquire necessary visas and documentation. Volunteer Position Details: CRC gives priority to juniors or seniors with a science background who are seeking academic credit as well as those enrolled in (or planning to attend) graduate school in a marine science-related field. Much of CRC’s work involves photo identification, using natural markings unique to each individual to catalog and track individuals over time. Volunteers will spend a large portion of their time comparing new photographs to those in our existing catalogs, and may additionally be involved in digital image processing and data entry. Additionally, volunteers may have opportunities to participate in Washington state stranding response, which may include beach surveys, data and specimen collection, data entry, and assisting in necropsies of pinnipeds & cetaceans. JNCC Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) eLearning Training Course (GBP 150 per person) Passive Acoustic Monitoring and PAMGUARD Software eLearning Training Course (GBP 150 per person) The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) MMO registered course is required for you to work as a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) in UK Continental Shelf waters during offshore projects such as seismic surveys, pile-driving and projects involving the use of explosives. This course has been created in response to the coronavirus crisis and has been approved by the JNCC as a valid alternative to the usual classroom taught course. Alternatively, project managers or interested parties may wish to complete this course for awareness of how MMOs work or for Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) course is designed to introduce this technique of monitoring for marine mammals to MMOs, researchers, project managers or any other interested parties. It covers basic acoustic theory, the use of a spectrogram to view example marine mammal vocalisation types and other ocean noise, PAM equipment components, assembly and deployment and finally an exercise in configuring the industry standard PAM software - PAMGUARD. This course has received recognition as an accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). To complete the eLearning courses you simply log in, read, learn and then pass assessments based on the course content. You set the pace of your learning. You will have access to the course for 12 months with the option to renew each year for a small fee if you would like continuous access to the course material and any updates that may occur. Courses usually take between 1 to 2 full days to complete.
