As part of our continued growth there are immediate vacancies for the following positions: PAMS OPERATIONAL TECHNICIAN As a PAMS Operational Technician you will be responsible for the maintenance, despatch and receipt of all PAMS equipment. In addition, you will be expected to keep up to date with national and international development of PAMS and implement accordingly. Applicants will ideally be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess a full comprehension with the technical composition and use of PAMS. Ideally the candidate would have an understanding of marine mammals, their biology and identification and previous marine survey experience would be advantageous. MARINE MAMMAL SCIENTIST Reporting to the current Marine Wildlife Business Manager, you will be expected to undertaken and develop the application of marine mammal observations, monitoring and recording systems, the compilation and preparation of reports and the processing of observational data and possess a sound knowledge marine mammals, their biology and identification. Ideally you will be of degree calibre or equivalent, and demonstrate the ability to lead and develop projects from implementation to completion and illustrate sound commercial awareness. You will need to be a confident individual with a can do attitude and enjoy being challenged. Previous relevant marine oil and gas or renewable energy industry experience is advantageous. Both positions require the individual to spend in the region of 60 days at sea, dependent on project requirements, with the remaining time being office based (Great Yarmouth). Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Steller Sea Lion Foraging Energetics The University of British Columbia Marine Mammal Research Unit (MMRU) invites highly motivated and experienced applicants to apply for the position of Post Doctoral Research Fellow. The appointment is to develop and manage a research program in the area of marine mammal foraging energetics. The research will focus on the foraging energetics and diving behavior of captive Steller sea lions as part of an integral component of the MMRU research goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing the science plan at the UBC Open Water Research Station. This facility allows researchers to study behavior and energetics of Steller sea lions using trained animals to carry out experiments in the open ocean environment. This should include a proven ability to lead and motivate research teams. Experience with the practical and analytical techniques required to conduct behavioral and energetic studies would be advantageous. You must also have excellent writing, communication and networking skills, illustrated by a strong publication record and evidence of effective communication with the scientific community. The post will be based at the University of British Columbia’s Fisheries Centre in Vancouver. However, significant time will also be spent at the UBC Open Water Research Station located at a remote location away from the University campus. The position is under the direct supervision of the Dr Andrew Trites and Dr David Rosen with support from the Office Manager. They will directly supervise research technicians at the Open Water facility. The position will also work closely with Aquarium training and husbandry staff. Indeed this is a great opportunity to gain skills in these areas. Good verbal and written communication skills, IT, design and fundraising skills are likewise useful but not essential. Time commitment Volunteers are needed from April until November 2010. We ask for a minimum commitment of 4 weeks (due to training), ideally volunteers would be able to commit longer. The new field dates for the Cetacean Research & Rescue Units <http://www.crru.org.uk/join_the_team.asp> Whales and dolphins of the Moray Firth project in Scotland this summer (May to October) have recently been launched. For 2010, the dates for our 11 day field programme (arriving on a Monday and departing on a Thursday) will be: 1. Team I: 31 May - 10 Jun 2. Team II: 14 Jun - 24 Jun 3. Team III: 28 Jun - 08 Jul 4. Dear colleagues, A few pieces of news about past and present European Cetacean Society publications: if you have ever attended an ECS conference, are an author/referee of a paper or papers on marine mammals submitted to JMBA, or have a manuscript ready to submit to a journal, this may be of interest! 1. ECS Conference Proceedings (European Research on Cetaceans) * Back issues: David Janiger (Los Angeles County Natural History Museum) is kinly digitising early volumes of ERC on behalf of ECS. Pdfs of vols 1-7, 8-10, 13-14 are already done * 2002-04: the CDs from these conferences are finally ready! Members who atended those conferences are entitled to a free copy. You may need to confirm that you attended (please write to Roland Lick - see the ECS web page for details) * 2009: the pdf version of the 2009 report will be ready in a few weeks time *** For the 2010 Proceedings, please send short papers based on your talk or poster at the ECS, and/or pdfs of posters, etc to me by 31 May 2010. Instructions on formatting are available from me. Our plan is for all Proceedings to be available online, as pdfs, on a member-only web page. We hope to implerment this during 2010. We should still have the facility to produce short runs of paper copies on demand. Depending on the level of interest we may be able to get paper copies printed once or twice a year. 2. ECS Workshop Proceedings ("Special Publication Series") Only one special publication is currently in process. The Beaked Whale Mitigation Workshop Report is now ready to go to the printers and should be distributed before the next conference. *** 2010 - Workshop organisers are invited to submit a workshop report for publication in the Special Publication Series. JMBA For the last 3 years, ECS has contributed papers for an annual special issue of the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK ECS members receive free access to the special issues. The next cetacean "special issue" is due in September 2010. However, the Journal reports some delays due to a slow turnaround time by authors and referees! If this means you, please respond promptly! *** Another special issue is planned for 2011.
