As part of our continued growth there are immediate vacancies for the following positions: PAMS OPERATIONAL TECHNICIAN As a PAMS Operational Technician you will be responsible for the maintenance, despatch and receipt of all PAMS equipment. In addition, you will be expected to keep up to date with national and international development of PAMS and implement accordingly. Applicants will ideally be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess a full comprehension with the technical composition and use of PAMS. Ideally the candidate would have an understanding of marine mammals, their biology and identification and previous marine survey experience would be advantageous. MARINE MAMMAL SCIENTIST Reporting to the current Marine Wildlife Business Manager, you will be expected to undertaken and develop the application of marine mammal observations, monitoring and recording systems, the compilation and preparation of reports and the processing of observational data and possess a sound knowledge marine mammals, their biology and identification. Ideally you will be of degree calibre or equivalent, and demonstrate the ability to lead and develop projects from implementation to completion and illustrate sound commercial awareness. You will need to be a confident individual with a can do attitude and enjoy being challenged. Previous relevant marine oil and gas or renewable energy industry experience is advantageous. Both positions require the individual to spend in the region of 60 days at sea, dependent on project requirements, with the remaining time being office based (Great Yarmouth). Comments on pilot whales stranded in New Zealand

I have identified several earthquakes that might have been responsible for the recent mass stranding at Farewell Spit, Golden Bay, South Island, New Zealand. A wavelet-based click detector

Dear MARMAM, I am in the final stages in the development of a wavelet-based 'click detector', intended for the study of odontocete clicks, and especially those of the Ziphidae. The general idea is to input a 'wav' file, and output a spreadsheet with the clicks detected within that recording. At this time the output indicates the sample length, center of the click ( in sample offset ), sample length, maximum waveform amplitude, et cetera. Other fields may be added, depending on participant feedback. Seal Pup Rehabilitation Internships Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre is a registered not for profit organization operating under permits from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Environment Canada and the Ministry of Water, Land and Air. Recipient of the Islands Trust Environmental Stewardship Award, IWNCC's focus is on the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned Harbour Seals. This spring and summer we will be awarding 14 internships. Internships last eight weeks and run from late May to early November. In the peak of summer the hours are long. The work day begins at 7:30 a.m. and continues until well past midnight. A shift can be 10 - 12 hours per day, six days a week, with one day off. The internships are on a voluntary basis, however comfortable housing with shared cooking and bathroom facilities are provided as well as a small grocery stipend, wireless internet, and a shared vehicle. Interns are accepted internationally and are responsible for their own transportation to and from British Columbia. Interns will work directly under marine mammal rehabilitation specialists and can expect to learn or improve your skills in the following: Safe rescue and handling of Harbour Seal pups. Proper restraint techniques. Stabilizing critical patients and new arrivals. Food preparation through all stages of the rehabilitation process. Gavage (tube) feeding, force feeding and hand feeding techniques. Proper hygiene and isolation protocols to prevent the spread of disease. Administration of oral medications. Behavioral and medical observation and proper record keeping. Natural history of marine mammal species. Fundamentals of how, why and when to administer alternative remedies such as homeopathy and Chinese herbs. Response to the rescue hotline and public interface as well as the logistics of coordinating rescues from many remote locations. General care of many other indigenous avian and mammalian species. Diving Mammal ECGs

Dear all I need to locate someone who has access to good quality ECG telemetry recordings during a dive and who might be interested in a collaboration. I am a cardiac physiologist working in London and we have made some very interesting observations on changes in ECG morphology during the diving response in humans. The problem with most humans is that they cannot hold their breath for very long (and the diving response is weak)! We would like to see if the morphological changes in the ECG persist during a prolonged (>3 or 4 minutes) dive in a 'proper' diving mammal. Would anyone out there have good quality telemetry data that they could share as part of a collaboration? Many people clearly telemeter diving mammals and record ECGs. The question is does anyone have suitable data they would be willing to share for our project that is almost certainly unrelated to their original aims! Ideally, the data we need would be digitised (then it could be e-mailed easily) and it would have to meet a number of criteria to be useful to us. We would need - (i) digitised data (ideally). (ii) the sampling speed needs to be sufficiently fast to be able to resolve the individual components of the ECG ie the P wave, QRS complex and and T wave all need to be reasonably resolved. This means a minimum sampling speed of say 400Hz but ideally 1kHz. (iii) the signal to noise ratio needs to be good enough for us to measure ECG intervals. My guess is that many traces are contaminated by skeletal muscle artefacts. These would have to be sufficiently small for us to still identify the individual components of the ECG wave-form from the noise. (iv) we would need some baseline data of the animal on the surface, and then during a sustained dive lasting ideally at least 3 minutes (ideally longer!). During our ideal dive the animal would show a strong steady and sustained bradycardia. I am certain that, pooled with our human data, we could get a very nice publication out of this quite easily.
