MARINE MAMMAL REHABILITATION INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT The Marine Animal Lifeline in Portland, Maine, seeks applicants for a summer internship working with stranded harbor seal pups. The internship will begin on May 20th and end August 13th. This is a full time internship position with some flexibility of the start and end date of the internship. The internship is an unpaid position and interns are responsible for all travel and housing expenses. Job Summary/Program Description: This internship is designed to provide a dynamic educational experience in the marine mammal field while offering valuable career experience. The interns will have a leadership role in the rehabilitation team and interns will be responsible for a number of support tasks with rehabilitating stranded seals throughout the course of the internship. The positions will involve working under the Veterinary Technicians in providing medical care, feeding, cleaning and completing medical records in the rehabilitation program. The intern will be integrated into the department with assigned duties allowing them to progressively take on more responsibility. Interns may also have the opportunity to assist in marine mammal rescues as they arise. In addition, they will provide support to the animal care staff in animal physicals, and assist in a number of other marine mammal care procedures. Intern Responsibilities & Qualifications: The internship is open to all applicants at least 18 years of age or older. Undergraduate students and non-students alike are encouraged to apply. If the intern intends to receive academic credit, the intern will be responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institutions. The internship is 5 days a week, 40 hours per week, however, due to the unpredictable nature of animal care, interns may sometimes be required to work beyond their normal scheduled hours. Daily operations at the rehabilitation facility begin at 6:30 am and go until at least 8:30 pm often later, on a case-by-case basis. The Marine Animal Lifeline is an extremely busy rehabilitation facility and the animals often require late-night or overnight care. Interns must be able and willing to work long and flexible hours including weekends, holidays and occasional nights. Interns will be required to have fair physical strength and be in good health. Successful applicants will have leadership skills, or posses the ability to learn proper leadership skills quickly. Interns need to have the ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment. Animal care and/or marine mammal experience is a plus but not required. Duties Include: * Daily animal diet preparations, routine cleaning of work areas. * Assisting with veterinary examinations and treatments. * Assisting with rescues and releases of injured or abandoned marine animals. * Assisting with the taking and processing of X-rays. * Assisting with blood handling and collection. * Assisting with necropsies. * Updating medical and laboratory records and logs. * Maintaining veterinary and rehab supplies and equipment. * Assisting in the feeding, cleaning and daily operations of the rehab area. * Other duties relating to the Center's goals and mission as required. The Alaska SeaLife Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to marine research, rehabilitation, conservation, and public education is seeking applications for the following: Animal Care Technician (Seasonal) This position is responsible for providing logistical support for the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of stranded marine wildlife admitted to the ASLC Stranding Program. Responsibilities (include but are not limited to): 1. Assisting in the care and maintenance of animals managed by the Center's Stranding Program. 2. Daily animal diet preparations, water quality testing, and routine cleaning of animal enclosures, holding pools, food preparation facilities and rehabilitation work areas. Following procedures for animal care, food preparation, and clean up, including proper maintenance and sterilization of equipment. 3. Assisting with logistics pertaining to live and dead stranded wildlife including rescues, animal transport and releases. 4. Under direction of the stranding coordinator, assisting research and veterinary services staff in facilitation of research projects and the collection of data samples, etc. Maintaining written and computer based records. 5. Participating in educational presentations to visitors and the public on topics relating to marine mammal stranding and ASLC operations. Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Biology, Zoology or related field. Some captive or stranding marine mammal and/or avian experience is required. Soft and technical skills should include: exceptional time management /organizational skills; self-motivated; ability to communicate effectively with various levels in the organization; computer skills including MS Outlook, Excel, Word, and database programs; excellent written and oral communication skills. Certified open water S.C.U.B.A. diver preferred. Must be physically fit with a good sense of balance and be able to lift over 50 lbs. Must have a valid driver's license. update on the beaked whales stranded on 26 January in SE Spain

Dear all, this message is to update the information sent 2 days ago about the atypical mass stranding of Ziphius cavirostris in Almería (SE Spain). There are four animals stranded now. The fourth was found, already dead, in the afternoon of the 27th a few km north from the first 3. The first three animals have been already examined by the team of Antonio Fernandez (afernandez(a)dmor.ulpgc.es) from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, with the help of the stranding network of Ecologistas en Acción Almería - PROMAR and other people from the Spanish Cetacean Society. The fourth animal is in a place of very difficult access, and the team of veterinarians are trying to reach the animal at the moment. The two animals examined were 2 females (one adult and one probably subadult) and one adult male. The fourth animal seems to be an adult male. The adult female had signs of a possible relatively recent pregnancy (although not very new), but the calf has not been found. Next week the team of Antonio Fernandez will complete the lab analysis, and will be able to report the results. The Spanish Cetacean Society, together with ACCOBAMS (Agreement for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic adjacent waters), and some colleagues from the UK and US, are trying to collect information on possible human-induced causes for this event. Marine Mammal Stranding Response Internship

MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING RESPONSE INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT The California Wildlife Center in Malibu, California, seeks applicants for spring and summer internships working with stranded marine mammals. The internship rotations will begin no later than March 15th and May 15threspectively. These are part time 8-week internship positions with some flexibility of the start and end date of the internship. The internships are unpaid positions and interns are responsible for all housing and travel expenses. Intern housing may be available for qualified applicants. Summary/Program Description: The California Wildlife Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured, orphaned and sick native wildlife. CWC fulfills this mission through marine mammal rescue, wildlife education programs and treatment of avian and terrestrial wildlife in our rehabilitation hospital. This internship will provide an exciting and challenging educational experience in the marine mammal field, while also allowing for additional hands-on experience with other native Californiawildlife. The internships will be working closely with the Marine Mammal program staff in all aspects of stranding response, including logistics, assessment, capture/restraint, transport to the Marine Mammal Care Center, and public relations. In addition, interns will provide support to CWC Hospital staff in animal husbandry tasks. 1. Intern Responsibilities & Qualifications: The internship is open to all applicants at least 18 years of age or older. Undergraduate students and non-students alike are encouraged to apply. If the intern intends to receive academic credit, the intern will be responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institutions. The internships are 3 days a week, 12-16 hours per week, however, due to the unpredictable nature of marine mammal response, interns may sometimes be required to work beyond their normal scheduled hours. Interns must be able and willing to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays. Interns will be required to have good physical strength. Interns need to have the ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment. Animal care and/or marine mammal experience is a plus but not required. Under supervision of Marine Mammal staff, duties will include: * Answering and responding to all calls, pages and messages concerning marine mammals in a timely and courteous manner * Assessing stranded marine mammals * Coordinating and leading responder team in the capture and handling of stranded marine mammals needing medical attention * Coordinating transport of stranded marine mammals to MMCC (San Pedro): * Maintaining detailed records of Malibu strandings, including reports of stranding, human interaction issues, etc. * Ensuring CWC rescue vehicle and marine mammal-designated equipment is kept in clean working order * Maintaining good rapport with representatives of various public agencies, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations Application Process Interested individuals must send the following: * Letter of intent, including reasons for wanting to do the internship * Resume * 3 references Submit the above items via regular mail or email to: California Wildlife Center Attn: Cynthia Reyes P.O. 3 beaked whales stranded last night in SE coast of Spain

Dear all, The Spanish Cetacean Society (SEC) reports that 3 Ziphius cavirostris just stranded in the SE coast of Spain (in the Gulf of Vera). Local police called the local stranding network of Almería PROMAR last night (26-01-2006) at 19:00 informing about 2 beaked whales stranded in the coast of Mojacar (more or less in the middle of the Gulf of Vera). The animals were alive and died during the night. This morning a third animal was found besides the port of Garrucha, already dead, only around 5 km far from the other two. The group of Antonio Fernández of the Department of Pathology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias was informed, and a team moved to Almería this morning. They are exploring the animals at this moment. When more information is available, it will be communicated to the scientific community.
