This symposium will consist of a combination of invited and contributed presentations on all aspects of marine mammal bioacoustics, including communication, echolocation, hearing, methods in marine mammal bioacoustics, effects of noise on marine mammals, and bioacoustics as a tool in marine mammal conservation. There will also be a session on Bill Watkins' legacy to marine mammal bioacoustics. Further announcements will follow with more specifics, but registration and abstract submissions are expected to commence in the fall of 2014. The candidate will play a key role in the development of in-house systems and be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all Marine Wildlife Departmental acoustic equipment, in accordance with HSSE and QA standards. Compilation and preparation of PAMS and noise monitoring reports including the processing of acoustic data is required. Dolphins research internships announcement and thesis opportunities - Last call Winter Season (January- April) 2016 Hi everyone, On behalf of the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI), I am pleased to announce that we are currently accepting internship applications for Winter and Spring term 2016 (a minimum of 30 days of participation) for our research project along the North-western coast of the Iberian Pensinsula (Galician waters, Spain). An internship period with the BDRI offers an excellent opportunity for qualified and motivated individuals to obtain field and laboratory training in marine mammal’s research methodology and analysis under the mentorship of experienced bottlenose dolphin researchers. The BDRI invites applications for dissertation/thesis projects in a dynamic, international, and competitive research environment. Interns can expect to gain a solid foundation in cetaceans behavioural ecology and sociobiology with a focus on dolphins ethology, habitat use and communication. BDRI offers interns the chance to work through the many steps of research. Your participation means that you will not only be observing the studied animals at sea, but you will also be collecting different types of scientific data, using various research methods, and helping on board the research vessel in general. Furthermore, as the Galician coastline is known for frequent strandings of various marine mammals species, you will be a part of an important network for rescue and data collection from these stranded animals. When back in the lab, you will participate in the transcription of the collected data, with the database work, you will use various softwares, perform photo-identification analysis, use of GIS and more. Moreover, interns will also receive cross-training in different areas related with the strandings (Response, Rescue, Necropsy and data collection). As an internship, you will be encouraged to work hard and gain an insight of what it is actually like to work as a marine mammal researcher. An academic background in biology, veterinary or natural science, coupled with motivation, willingness to work hard and interest in marine mammals research make the most qualified individuals. Our centre understands the importance of giving the participant the responsibilities and experience needed in order to give an insight and reflect the reality of a job within the field of marine mammal science. The BDRI is a private and self-funded centre, hence, there is no compensation for the internship positions. There is an interships fee that includes the accommodation in an apartment, tuition and other expenses derived of your participation (housing, use of equipment, field trips by car, and use of research vessel). Successful applicants will be responsible for their own transportation expenses to and from the research centre (O Grove, Galicia, Spain). Internship start and end dates are flexible but the position requires a minimum of 30 days continuous commitment sometime between January through to November. The intern is required to complete a project and present a 10 minute presentation at the end of their internship. RESCUE/STRANDING DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT - 2016 The Rescue Department of The Marine Mammal Center is seeking applicants for internships working with stranded pinnipeds, cetaceans and sea otters. These positions are unpaid. Internship Opportunities are available at the following locations. · San Luis Obispo Operations in Morro Bay · Monterey Bay Operations in Moss Landing · Main Hospital in Sausalito Program Description: The Rescue Department Internship is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are interested in increasing their experience and knowledge of marine mammal behavior and the Marine Mammal Stranding Network. Interns will be responsible for answering the animal hotline and rotating the after-hours on-call. Interns will coordinate rescue and triage response throughout the Center's over 600-mile rescue range. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in marine mammal rescues, releases and other field responses as available. In addition, interns will be required to assist in other departments and with animal care duties (feed preparations, medical charting, and pen cleaning) for on-site pinnipeds. Other duties may include: participation in training classes, data entry and tracking, maintaining rescue equipment and assorted miscellaneous tasks. Intern Responsibilities & Qualifications: The internship is open to all applicants 21 years of age or older, with an avid interest in marine biology, zoology, general biology, policy or a related field. If the intern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they are responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution. Interns must be able to work for a minimum of 3 months, 5 days a week, at least 40 hours per week. Work schedule must be flexible and may include weekends and holidays. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible for obtaining housing and transportation. First confirmed Photo ID match for killer whales sighted in Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi

Dear Marmamers, We (Orca Project Sri Lanka) are pleased to announce our finding of the first known Photo ID match for two killer whales sighted in both Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi (approx. distance 3,300 km). The two individuals, thought to be a male and female, are known to Orca Project Sri Lanka as members of Pod 6, first sighted off Mirissa (Southern coast) on 31/08/2015 by whale watch operator Raja and the Whales. These individuals match those in an image from Abu Dhabi (taken in June 2008) that appeared online via Gulf News, and can be viewed at this link http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/environment/killer-whales-spotted-in-abu-dhabi… The positive match was confirmed by NOAA scientists/ killer whale experts- Robert Pitman, John Durban and David Ellifrit. This exciting finding bodes well for the potential success of collaborative Citizen Science when researching far-travelling pelagic populations, such as those that inhabit the Northern Indian Ocean. Due to their offshore nature and infrequent sightings, very little is known about their ecology, movements, population structure and more. The Northern Indian Ocean Killer Whale Alliance was founded as part of a collaborative project between Orca Project Sri Lanka and Wildlife Conservation Society biologist Tim Collins, with the hopes of shedding some light on the lives of these mysterious whales. In addition to coordinating a Photo ID catalogue for the region, the alliance was set up with the objective of increasing the number of “eyes and ears” available in the area for killer whale sightings. Already the NIO Killer Whale catalogue holds over 50 individuals from all over the Northern Indian Ocean, with images contributed by members of the alliance which include Whale Watchers, NGOs, researchers, fisherman, yachties, marine enthusiasts and more. The Aquarium of the Pacific seeks interns to join the Marine Mammal Photo ID program for the Spring 2015 session. This intern will be responsible for assisting the Boats Coordinator on photo IDing blue whales, fin whales, and humpback whales during our daily whale watching cruises, as well as interpreting data to guests at the Aquarium. New paper on the effects of human developments on individual dolphins

Thompson, Leslie New, Barbara Cheney, Monica Arso, Philip S. Hammond, Carl Donovan and David Lusseau (2015). Predicting the effects of human developments on individual dolphins to understand potential long-term population consequences. Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 282: 20152109. Abstract: Human activities that impact wildlife do not necessarily remove individuals from populations. They may also change individual behaviour in ways that have sub-lethal effects. This has driven interest in developing analytical tools that predict the population consequences of short-term behavioural responses. In this study, we incorporate empirical information on the ecology of a population of bottlenose dolphins into an individual-based model that predicts how individuals’ behavioural dynamics arise from their underlying motivational states, as well as their interaction with boat traffic and dredging activities. We simulate the potential effects of proposed coastal developments on this population and predict that the operational phase may affect animals’ motivational states. For such results to be relevant for management, the effects on individuals’ vital rates also need to be quantified. We investigate whether the relationship between an individual’s exposure and the survival of its calves can be directly estimated using a Bayesian multi-stage model for calf survival. The results suggest that any effect on calf survival is likely small and that a significant relationship could only be detected in large, closely-studied populations. Our work can be used to guide management decisions, accelerate the consenting process for coastal and offshore developments and design targeted monitoring. Assistant/Associate Professor in Ecological Modeler

Sustainable Coastal Systems Cluster Ecological Modeler The University of Central Florida is in a hiring campaign to recruit 100 new faculty for Fall 2016. As part of this hiring campaign, UCF has recently established six interdisciplinary clusters to strengthen its academic offerings and research mission. In support of this effort, we are searching for faculty in the broad interdisciplinary area of Sustainable Coastal Systems (<http://ucf.edu/research/coastalsystems><http://ucf.edu/research/coastalsystems>http://ucf.edu/research/coastalsystems) and plan to fill three positions of Assistant/Associate Professors and two positions of Associate/Full Professors to begin in Fall 2016. The goal is to bring together a core group of faculty who work across traditional research boundaries or are working in transdisciplinary fields. We will be hiring individuals who are active research leaders in the interdisciplinary fields of ecological modeling, ecosystem services, ecological engineering, coastal planning and emergency response, ecological economics, ecological policy, and coastal political geography. These five hires will join 34 current cluster faculty, representing ten departments and five colleges, to lead a world-class effort to understand and assess natural and human-related impacts to coastal ecosystem health, restoration, sustainability, and mitigation; and ultimately to characterize and integrate physical, chemical, biological, and socio-economic processes impacting coastal communities and ecosystems. Applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor position in coastal ecological modeling must have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution. Applicants are expected to have relevant post-doctoral training, and show a demonstrated ability or strong potential to maintain a vigorous, extramurally-funded research program. Relevant experience could include research on ecosystem health; toxicological modeling related to coastal systems; invasive species; climate change impacts; theoretical ecology with interests in ecological applications; predictive modeling of dynamic natural and human systems; conservation of imperiled coastal species and natural communities; mathematical or simulation modeling at the population or ecosystem level; or linking modeling of estuarine and coastal ecosystems to conservation management applications. Candidates with quantitative, interdisciplinary knowledge from subsets of fields including coastal biogeochemistry, toxicology, marine ecosystem dynamics, or ecosystem evaluations, as well as working at the interface of social and biological sciences, are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong quantitative and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The successful candidate will become a core faculty member in the Sustainable Coastal Systems Cluster.
