A private engineering firm is currently seeking to fill one to two post-doctoral positions for marine mammal surveying work off the coast of New York. Candidates must hold a Ph.D., and have published at least one peer-reviewed article within the last three years in marine mammal habitat use and distribution and/or marine mammal acoustics. Field expertise in photo-identification techniques, visual surveys and/or acoustic surveys is a plus, as are experience with spatial analysis in GIS software, report writing, and acoustic post-processing techniques. If selected, the candidate must commit to the survey for its duration; a period of 3.5-4 years. Work begins January 1, 2016. We would like to announce two workshops on statistical modelling in January 2016: Introduction to Statistical Modelling and Spatial Modelling Methods for Correlated Data Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling 12th 15th and 18th - 21st January 2016, University of St. Andrews The Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) at the University of St. Andrews will be running two Statistical Modelling¹ workshops to introduce both basic and more advanced techniques. Introduction to Statistical Modelling (4 days) This workshop will take place 12th - 15th January 2015 and will cover Exploratory Data Anaysis, Confidence Intervals, Linear Models, Generalised Linear Models to help participants analyse continuous, presence/absence and count data and Generalised Estimating Equations for modeling correlated data. Spatial Modelling Methods for Correlated Data (4 days) This workshop will take place 18th 21st January 2016 and covers one dimensional and two dimensional smoothing using more traditional and recently developed methods. The correlated aspect of the data is addressed using Generalised Estimating Equations (GEEs). These will be covered in more detail than in the introductory workshop. The initial example will be using count data (Poisson) however towards the end of the workshop we will also cover models for categorical data (e.g. Binomial, Binary and Multinomial response types). Both courses will be heavily data-based and presented using large scale offshore wind farm data. The R software package will be used for workshop-based practical¹s. Computer sessions take place in our computer classroom (attached to the seminar room) and participants can use our computers or bring their own laptops. The abstract submission deadline has been extended for the reason that authors now have the option to publish accepted abstracts in the Open Access Mares Conference 2016 Collection via the publisher PeerJ <http://www.maresconference.eu/peerj> Collections. All accepted abstracts can be published in the <https://peerj.com/preprints/> PeerJ PrePrints (a preprint server incurring no cost) in the Mares Conference on Marine Ecosystems Health and Conservation 2016 Collection. All tribal government, agency and public comments received during the Draft EIS comment period (Jan. 24 -April 15, 2014) and the Supplement to the Draft EIS comment period (Dec. 19, 2014 - Feb. 2, 2015) were reviewed and considered in the development of the Final EIS. Also included in the Final EIS is a list of comments received, and the Navy's responses to those comments, including references to any sections that may have been modified based on a comment. The Final EIS is also being reviewed by agency and Navy leadership, including the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, who will ultimately make the decision regarding which Alternative will be selected to accomplish the Proposed Action. Proposed Action The purpose of the Proposed Action is to ensure that the Navy accomplishes its mission to maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas. This mission is achieved in part by training and testing within at-sea areas collectively referred to as the NWTT Study Area. The NWTT EIS/OEIS also supports the renewal of federal regulatory permits and authorizations for current training and testing activities and future activities requiring environmental analysis. The Navy proposes to conduct training and testing activities primarily within existing range complexes, operating areas (OPAREAs), and testing ranges located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, to include portions of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound, and the Western Behm Canal in southeastern Alaska. Navy training and testing activities may include the use of explosives and sonar sources within the Study Area. Lewison We apply an integrated and interdisciplinary conceptual framework to assess the potential for uptake of bycatch reduction measures by small-scale fisheries along the Andaman coast and eastern Gulf of Thailand, and in Sabah, Malaysia. Specifically, we characterize the current governance, socio-economic, ecological, and scientific context for marine megafauna bycatch, and identify the enabling and limiting factors to bycatch reduction at each location. Enabling factors are those that motivate or facilitate conservation actions among resource users, managers, and other stakeholders, while limiting factors are those that act as barriers to conservation. We conduct a comparative analysis of the strength of enabling and limiting factors at the two study locations by using a qualitative scoring system. Overall, conditions in Thailand appear to be relatively more supportive of bycatch reduction than Sabah. Many enabling factors, such as community based marine management and positive attitudes towards conservation, occur at the local scale, suggesting potential marine megafauna bycatch reduction approaches can be implemented successfully from the bottom-up. We show that intervention points for reducing marine megafauna bycatch lie within a much broader realm than conventionally considered in bycatch reduction schemes. G'day MARMAM, The attached photos show an emaciated and lethargic NZ fur seal (A. forsteri) that hauled out on the Tasmanian east coast on 14 Sep 2015, and unfortunately died a day later. You'll see it has a brown disk-shaped tag in the left flipper (number 148/13). Does anyone recognise this tag? Any information regarding the origin and date/location of tagging would be really appreciated.
