Oceanography and MarineBiology: An Annual Review, 53, 1-54. Abstract:Energetic tidal-stream environments are characterized byfrequent, variable, yet broadly predictable currents containing ephemeral flowstructures that change across multiple spatio-temporal scales. Marine mammalsand seabirds (marine megafauna) often frequent such sites, but increasinglythese locations are targeted for renewable energy extraction; little is known,however, about how marine megafauna use these habitats and any potentialimpacts. This review aims to summarize existing knowledge concerning usage bymarine megafauna and considers their wider ecological significance. The reviewdescribes the physical processes occurring within tidal-stream environmentsthat generate the oceanographic structures of potential ecological relevance,such as jets, boils, eddies, and fronts. Important physical features of theseenvironments include lateral transport, turbulence-driven 3-dimensional flowstructure at various spatial scales, and upwelling. Foraging opportunitiesappear to be the main attractor to marine megafauna, likely driven by enhancedprey abundance, vulnerability, or diversity. Many megafauna associate withparticular tidal phases, current strengths, and flow structures, most likely inresponse to tidally forced prey distribution and behaviours. Occupancypatterns, distributions, and foraging behaviours are discussed. Local sitefidelity by ‘tidal-stream experts’ suggest non-uniform conservation riskswithin larger metapopulations. The review discusses data-gathering techniquesand associated challenges, the significance of scaling, and information gaps. New Paper: Can Static Habitat Protection Encompass Critical Areas for Highly Mobile Marine Top Predators

PLoS ONE 10(7): e0133265. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0133265 Abstract Along the East African coast, marine top predators are facing an increasing number of anthropogenic threats which requires the implementation of effective and urgent conservation measures to protect essential habitats. Understanding the role that habitat features play on the marine top predator distribution and abundance is a crucial step to evaluate the suitability of an existing Marine Protected Area (MPA), originally designated for the protection of coral reefs. We developed species distribution models (SDM) on the IUCN data deficient Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) in southern Kenya. We followed a comprehensive ecological modelling approach to study the environmental factors influencing the occurrence and abundance of dolphins while developing SDMs. Through the combination of ensemble prediction maps, we defined recurrent, occasional and unfavourable habitats for the species. Our results showed the influence of dynamic and static predictors on the dolphins spatial ecology: dolphins may select shallow areas (5-30 m), close to the reefs (< 500 m) and oceanic fronts (< 10 km) and adjacent to the 100m isobath (< 5 km). We also predicted a significantly higher occurrence and abundance of dolphins within the MPA. Recurrent and occasional habitats were identified on large percentages on the existing MPA (47% and 57% using presence-absence and abundance models respectively). However, the MPA does not adequately encompass all occasional and recurrent areas and within this context, we propose to extend the MPA to incorporate all of them which are likely key habitats for the highly mobile species. The results from this study provide two key conservation and management tools: (i) an integrative habitat modelling approach to predict key marine habitats, and (ii) the first study evaluating the effectiveness of an existing MPA for marine mammals in the Western Indian Ocean. Marine Mammal Field Techniques and Humpback Whale Field Intensive Programs in Puerto Rico, USA

The Marine and Coastal Ecology Research Center (MCERC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, is accepting registration for the following programs: *Marine Mammal Field Techniques and Humpback Whale Field Intensive Program* * Puerto Rico, USA* Each week-long program is designed to build skills for field research and is ideal for anybody interested in theodolite, acoustics, capture-recapture methods, and behavioral studies. The program sessions also include learning to use software for analysis. No experience is required or necessary to participate in these programs. The *Marine Mammal Field Techniques program* focuses on field methods that apply broadly to marine mammal data collection. The Humpback whale Field intensive is centered on team work and data collection specific to The Puerto Rico Humpback Whale Project in Puerto Rico. Details can be found on any of the websites listed below. Each program is an excellent opportunity for an internship experience. There are three sessions for the Marine Mammal Field Techniques program; Thanksgiving week, and the first two weeks in January, 2016. There are 8 spots Thanksgiving week and 4 spots for each session in January. Please note some spots are already filled and availability is first-come-first-served. Snorkeling and swimming is a part of each day’s ecology program. The cost of this program is $900USD. The *Humpback Whale Field Intensive Program* has week-long sessions between January and the end of April. Participants are a critical part of the MCERC research team. This program includes long days and evening round-table discussions that revolve around peer reviewed publications relevant to the research and marine resources management applications. There are 4 slots for participants each week. Please note that some spots are already filled and availability is on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost of this program is $1300USD. Program fees include a bunk at the field house, all meals, transportation to and from all field sites, all boat excursions for collecting data, and instruction. Program fees do not include the cost of airfare and transportation to and from the field house in San Gérman, Puerto Rico, USA. All program fees support research and education programs. New QFASA Paper

Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce the publication of an objective method to establish bootstrap sample sizes for investigating the performance of quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA), a method that has been widely utilized for marine species. Citation: Bromaghin, J. F. 2015. Simulating realistic predator signatures in quantitative fatty acid signature analysis. Ecological Informatics 30:68-71. Abstract: Diet estimation is an important field within quantitative ecology, providing critical insights into many aspects of ecology and community dynamics. Quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) is a prominent method of diet estimation, particularly for marine mammal and bird species. Investigators using QFASA commonly use computer simulation to evaluate statistical characteristics of diet estimators for the populations they study. Similar computer simulations have been used to explore and compare the performance of different variations of the original QFASA diet estimator. In both cases, computer simulations involve bootstrap sampling prey signature data to construct pseudo-predator signatures with known properties. However, bootstrap sample sizes have been selected arbitrarily and pseudo-predator signatures therefore may not have realistic properties. I develop an algorithm to objectively establish bootstrap sample sizes that generates pseudo-predator signatures with realistic properties, thereby enhancing the utility of computer simulation for assessing QFASA estimator performance. The algorithm also appears to be computationally efficient, resulting in bootstrap sample sizes that are smaller than those commonly used. I illustrate the algorithm with an example using data from Chukchi Sea polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and their marine mammal prey. The concepts underlying the approach may have value in other areas of quantitative ecology in which bootstrap samples are post-processed prior to their use. VAQS Stranding Response and Research Internships

The Virginia Aquarium’s Research & Conservation Division is now accepting Stranding Response & Research Intern applications for the winter/spring 2016 season. There are currently three positions available to begin early 2016. One of the positions will assist the research team with an on-going humpback whale photo ID matching project and the other two positions will assist the stranding response team with an emphasis on either data entry/organization or an on-going stomach content analysis project. The application deadline is November 15, 2015. Please note that all internships are non-compensatory and intern housing is not provided by the Virginia Aquarium. Duties: Research Intern- * Assist with vessel-based transect surveys for marine mammals * Assist with photo identification and matching of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) dorsal find and fluke images o Staff will train you in photo ID techniques, recording track effort and sighting data, image and data processing * Assist in the field with photo ID and biopsy efforts o Stock research kits (biopsy supplies, electronic equipment, datasheets) * Enter data from vessel surveys in excel and GIS databases and utilize image processing software (e.g. ACDSEE and IMATCH) * Respond to marine mammal and sea turtle stranding events. Work may be done under adverse weather conditions. Stranding Response Intern- * Respond to marine mammal and sea turtle stranding events. Work may be done under adverse weather conditions. * Assist in the collection of Level A data for the National Marine Fisheries Service * Participate in post mortem data collection and necropsies * Assist in care for animals during rehabilitation including, but not limited to: food prep, feeding, cleaning (mopping floor, washing dirty laundry, vacuuming tanks, washing dishes, etc.), tank repairs, and other husbandry duties * Assist with public outreach and education events * Assist with volunteer and cooperator trainings * Assist staff with daily administrative tasks including answering phones, taking messages, and preparing volunteers for response * Other duties as assigned by Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response staff * Data entry: Assist staff with on-going data entry into established databases and organization and entry of new data. * Stomach content analysis project: Assist the project lead with on-going bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stomach content analysis project which includes: extraction of otoliths from fish and measurement of fish and otoliths Qualifications: Applicants must: 1) be at least 18 years of age; 2) be able to and comfortable with driving full-sized pick-up trucks; 3) be in good physical condition and able to lift over 40 pounds and assist with heavier loads; 4) be able to work in adverse conditions; 5) be comfortable on and around water; 6) be completing this internship for college credit. Specific to the research internship: 1) experience with photo-id, GIS, data and image processing preferred; 2) experience with Microsoft Office required; 3) a high level of attention to detail is preferred. Applicants must commit to 10 weeks and work well both independently and as part of a team. All interns will be required to deliver a 10-15 minute presentation to staff and volunteers at the end of their internship. Candidates should be self-motivated, articulate, mature, reliable, responsible and able to take, as well as give direction. Internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students. Preference is given to students who have completed their sophomore year and are working towards credit for a degree in science. A background in biology and familiarity with stranding response is preferred but not required. Applicants who are interested in applying but will not be seeking college credit should still apply and may be considered for an apprenticeship position. Requirements: Interns are expected to work 24 hours a week (three eight-hour days) for 10 consecutive weeks without exception. Housing and transportation cannot be provided. Most of the animals the Stranding Center works with are dead (approximately 95%) and most are decomposing. This is a position that requires a strong nose, stomach and mental state. IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! Please consider this before applying.
