The SEAMAMMS serves as an excellent and encouraging platform for students to present their research and network with colleagues and experts in the marine mammal field. We were so grateful to everyone who originally signed up in 2020 and are thankful for the opportunity to host the symposium for the first time at RSMAS this year. Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our recent paper: Ménard, N., Turgeon, S., Conversano, M., & Martins, C. C. A. 2022. Sharing the waters: Application of a marine spatial planning approach to conserve and restore the acoustic habitat of endangered beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in and around the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park. Marine Pollution Bulletin, 175, 113325. Anthropogenic underwater noise degrades the quality of whale habitats, affecting vital functions which may compromise the recovery of species at risk exposed to chronic vessel-based activities. The endangered St. Lawrence Estuary<https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/estuary> (SLE) beluga (Delphinapterus leucas<https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/d…>) lives downstream from industrial activities in a highly accessible coastal environment. Many approaches were deployed in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park to address the issue of cohabitation between whales and vessels. Place-based conservation measures aimed at protecting and restoring the tranquility of key areas of SLE beluga critical habitat by managing vessel-based activities were implemented through a marine spatial planning<https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/marine-sp…> approach. They involved protecting the quietness of the South Channel by avoiding rerouting shipping, establishing of a regulatory area closure in Baie Sainte-Marguerite and of a beluga conservation area without commercial whale-watching in the Upper SLE. Compliance monitoring show that these efforts are effective to enhance the protection and restoration of the acoustic habitat. New publication: No BMAA neurotoxin detected in stranded cetaceans in NW Spain

Dear MARMAM readers, On behalf of my coauthors and myself, I am pleased to share a recent publication with you: Soliño L., Kim S-Y., López A., Covelo P., Rydberg S., Costa P.R. and Lage S. 2022. No B-N-Methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) was detected in stranded cetaceans from Galicia (North-West Spain). Journal of Marine Science and Engineering 10(3), 314. Abstract: The neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), a non-proteinogenic amino acid produced by several species of both prokaryotic (cyanobacteria) and eukaryotic (diatoms) microorganisms, has been proposed to be associated with the development of neurodegenerative diseases. At first, BMAA appeared to be ubiquitously present worldwide in various organisms, from aquatic and terrestrial food webs. However, recent studies, using detection methods based on mass spectrometry, instead of fluorescence detection, suggest that the trophic transfer of BMAA is debatable. This study evaluated BMAA in 22 cetaceans of three different species (Phocoena phocoena, n = 8, Delphinus delphis, n = 8, and Tursiops truncatus, n = 6), found stranded in North-West Spain. BMAA analysis of the liver, kidney, or muscle tissues via sensitive liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry did not reveal the presence of this compound or its isomers. The absence recorded in this study highlights the need to better understand the trophic transfer of BMAA and its anatomical distribution in marine mammals. This is the first in a series of webinars focusing on discussing practical approaches to reducing human noise impacts for different sound sources. Much of the focus in this first and subsequent workshops relate to monitoring, research, and assessment methods for evaluating and mitigating impacts on marine mammals, with the first one covering monitoring, research, and risk assessment methods for cetaceans in wind energy development areas. The Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse University is seeking a laboratory research assistant to support sponsored research. The lab examines the ecology and evolution of acoustic signaling, with a particular focus on cetaceans and continued efforts to further conservation and management actions. The laboratory research assistant will work with members of the BABEL lab to support a variety of research projects. Work will include organizing and managing data, maintaining and calibration scientific equipment (especially hydrophones and acoustic tags), participating in field efforts at sea, analysis of acoustic and/or multisensor tag data, and assisting with writing scientific reports and research papers. We expect candidates to have at least one year of research experience and to be able to demonstrate strong organizational skills. Prior experience with marine mammal field research, acoustic recording and calibration techniques, and analysis of bioacoustic or biologging tag data is preferred. New Publication on the Animal Audiogram Database

Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I would like to draw your attention to our new publication on a community based database of hearing physiology data: The Animal Audiogram Database: A community-based resource for consolidated audiogram data and metadata Denise Jäckel, Alvaro Ortiz-Troncoso, Michael Dähne and Christian Bölling Knowledge of hearing ability, as represented in audiograms, is essential for understanding how animals acoustically perceive their environment, predicting and counteracting the effects of anthropogenic noise, and managing wildlife. Audiogram data and relevant background information are currently only available embedded in the text of individual scientific publications in various unstandardized formats. This heterogeneity makes it hard to access, compare, and integrate audiograms. The Animal Audiogram Database (https://animalaudiograms.org) assembles published audiogram data, metadata about the corresponding experiments, and links to the original publications in a consistent format. The database content is the result of an extensive survey of the scientific literature and manual curation of the audiometric data found therein. As of November 1, 2021, the database contains 306 audiogram datasets from 34 animal species. The scope and format of the provided metadata and design of the database interface were established by active research community involvement. Options to compare audiograms and download datasets in structured formats are provided. With the focus currently on vertebrates and hearing in underwater environments, the database is drafted as a free and open resource for facilitating the review and correction of the contained data and collaborative extension with audiogram data from any taxonomic group and habitat.
