The spring offering of the introductory distance sampling workshop (a popular method for marine mammal population assessment) offered by CREEM will occur 11-22 April 2022. Registration for the workshop will open in mid-February. Meanwhile, applications are now being accepted for the free place at this workshop. The intention is to widen participation in the workshop to practitioners under-represented in the discipline. RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION AVAILABLE - seeking volunteer Research Assistants for research on Gray whales migrating northbound through the nearshore of the Santa Barbara Channel. Gray Whales Count (GWC) is seeking Research Assistants (RA) to assist in the annual survey, conducted from shore at the Coal Oil Point Reserve, Goleta, California, adjacent to the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. This position is open to citizens of the United States of America only. The 2022 survey begins February 14 and continues every day through end of May, from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Sunday. We are looking for interested individuals who would be available to begin at the start of the survey and commit the entire length of the Count. GWC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for research and education. The primary goal of research is to estimate the number of Gray whales and Gray whale calves migrating northbound through our corridor and to share our data to complement similar sampling-studies along the California coast. A secondary goal is to document the variety and quantity of other marine mammals in the ocean area around our site, which is now a Marine Protected Area. We are able to monitor human activity, including interactions with marine mammals, including Gray whales. Goals of education are to teach the process of scientific research to Counters and to give them the opportunity to conduct a meaningful study, to experience marine mammals in their natural environment, and to share this process and their enthusiasm with publics through direct interchange, outreach, and various media. The Research Assistants will be trained by the Project Coordinator and, in-turn, share the responsibility of conducting research and education. Applicable skills learned and achieved include: -Process, concepts, and protocols of the survey -Ability to identify a multitude of marine mammal species from a distance, including but not limited to: Gray whales, Humpback whales, Bottlenose dolphins, Common dolphins, Pacific white-sided dolphins, Harbor seals, California Sea lions, Sea otters, etc. -Identify behaviors of these marine mammals -Distinguish calves from juveniles and adults -Identify vessels and vessel operations -Learn about marine mammals in their natural environment and the forces that affect them, both natural and anthropogenic -Personnel (volunteer and staff) interaction, and visitor education and outreach Because of the training required, applicants must be willing to commit full-time to the project for the time period involved. This will entail 8 hours of work a day for at least 5 days a week. The Count is 7 days per week and the RA may commit more time to the Count as desired. The more time you can put in, the more you will get out of your experience. Priority will be given to those candidates with associative career goals and who are able to participate for an extended period of time. This is a unique opportunity to gain extensive experience in scientific fieldwork in an environment rich with diverse populations of marine mammals. You will work with equally diverse individuals who are caring, attentive, and curious. Gray whales are a sentinel species traveling from temperate lagoons in Mexico, along the dynamic California Current at the eastern edge of the North Pacific Ocean to the Arctic waters of northern Alaska in one of the longest marine mammal migrations. There are boundless avenues of exploration, and Gray Whales Count can begin your journey. Requirements: Even though this is situated in Southern California, you must be able to withstand harsh weather conditions. Fieldwork can be physically and mentally demanding at times. Willingness to work long hours. Experience with a camera and digital asset management a plus. Commit for the season (minimum five days per week). Enrolled in or completed a degree in biology, marine science, zoology, environmental science, animal behavior or a related field. Previous field experience with marine wildlife and observation is highly recommended but not required. Ability to work in a team environment. Cannot stress this enough. You will be trained to be a leader of an operation with people of differing experience and dedication. Be enthusiastic and possess a positive attitude and a desire to learn. Be adaptable and patient. The migration is characterized by pulses rather than a steady stream; and weather is the unknown factor: wind, rain, and fog can shut us down. This is a volunteer position. The selected RAs will be responsible for his or her own transportation to and from Santa Barbara/Goleta, California. The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City, California, is seeking applicants for Summer 2022 internships in marine mammal stranding response and rehabilitation. This internship is unpaid, however, a $750 housing stipend is available to the first two applicants accepted. Internships are a minimum of 12-16 weeks. Applicants will be living and working in Crescent City, CA. Interns will participate in: * marine mammal rescue and health assessment * food preparation and feeding * wound care and medication administration * blood draw and subcutaneous fluid administration * observing surgeries and necropsies * cleaning pens, pools, kennels daily * facility maintenance/cleaning * fundraising events and special projects * gift shop visitor education Qualifications: * a recent graduate or actively pursuing a degree in marine biology, zoology, or a related field * physically fit with the ability to lift 50lbs and walk long distances on the beach in adverse conditions such as hot and cold temperatures, humidity, rain, and wind * willing to work 40 hours, 5 days a week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays * self-motivated, articulate, reliable, and responsible * work well independently, as well as with a team * possess a valid driver's license * have experience with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel This is an unpaid position with no housing provided, however, we do offer a $750 housing stipend (in 3 payments) for two summer internships, on a first come first serve basis. Postdoctoral Researcher: Large Whale Statistical Modeling

Integrated Statistics is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC). NEFSC's Protected Species Branch mission includes assessing the population status of protected species (cetaceans, sea turtles, seabirds, and seals) within U.S. waters, and evaluating threats to species and populations due to anthropogenic activities. Detailed assessments of species distributions and abundances are essential to understand broad scale spatial and temporal movements and behaviors. For risk assessment and mitigation of impacts, information on seasonal and inter-annual variability in distribution, ecology, and behavior at smaller spatial scales is used to estimate potential impacts on protected species due to localized activities (e.g., fishery bycatch, military exercises, energy exploration, shipping traffic, etc.). The Postdoctoral Researcher will assist with the statistical analysis needs of the Large Whale Program, focusing primarily on population assessment of North Atlantic right whales. The postdoc will work on the population viability assessment (PVA) for North Atlantic right whales. The PVA work has two major components: retrospective model fitting of historical sightings data to estimate demographic parameters, and exploring future population dynamics under various scenarios related to environmental conditions and mitigation of human interactions with whales through policies enacted under the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act. The postdoc will work with members of the Population Evaluation Team subgroup of the Right Whale U.S. Implementation Team, including scientists across multiple federal agencies and NGOs (e.g., New England Aquarium). *Duties* * Assist with further development of the PVA. This includes developing and fitting new and existing population models to sightings data and improving an existing individual-based population projection model to facilitate its current and future uses as a management tool. * Assist with other statistical needs in PSB, serving as a consultant and collaborator to biologists monitoring protected species. * Provide support for science and management needs. Duties include analyzing data and preparing presentations for stakeholder meetings, environmental impact statements, biological opinions, and scientific manuscripts. *Qualifications and Skills* These qualifications and skills are required: * PhD in quantitative ecology, statistics, wildlife ecology or similar field * Strong background in statistical modeling including experience in Bayesian and frequentist concepts * Advanced programming in R * Experience publishing scientific research * Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written (including visual presentations) with a variety of audiences including technical, scientific, and the general public * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team * Strong project management skills * Attention to detail * Adaptability to quickly changing priorities and strict timelines * US citizenship and presence. Ability to comply with EO 14042. These qualifications and skills are desired: * Experience with Bayesian hierarchical modeling * Experience with capture recapture modeling * Model fitting with BUGS/JAGS/NIMBLE * Programming and database management (e.g., PL/SQL, version control with Git) * Familiarity with visual survey data collection and processing methods The position will be full-time for one year with the possibility of extension. Survey on Marine Mammal Research Priorities

Hello everyone, Just a friendly reminder that we are hoping to hear from as many people as possible in the marine mammal community. If you could please take the time to fill out the survey it would be greatly appreciated! The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Marine Mammal Taxonomic Advisory Group is interested in creating a new resource. The intended result is a list of priority research questions that could be addressed by facilities caring for marine mammals. Research questions can be about anything (e.g., animal welfare, cognition, visitor outcomes, communication, testing bio-logging devices, etc.) that can be addressed by studying animals under human care. MARINE ANIMAL REHABILITATION & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIP The National Marine Life Center (NMLC) is now accepting applications for the Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Environmental Education Internship for the Summer 2022 session. The application deadline is March 1, 2022. The internship will run from the third week of May 2022 through the fourth week of August 2022. Animal Care Responsibilities: Depending on need and case load, interns will assist with the care of the NMLC rehabilitation patients including seals, sea turtles, and a variety of native turtle species. Animal Care duties will include animal restraint; cleaning; disinfecting tanks, equipment, and environmental enrichment devices; diet preparation; administering feeds (including tube feeding); record keeping; facility maintenance; and water quality testing. Interns will also assist animal care staff with medical procedures, admission exams, animal necropsies, and release events. Education Responsibilities: Interns will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, virtual programs, fairs, and festivals. Programs will focus on marine animals, rehabilitation practices, conservation, and STEM activities. Interns will learn how to effectively interpret and educate guests of NMLC on marine animals and conservation. Interns may be asked to work in the gift shop and assist with various office projects such as fundraising and data entry. Opportunities may be available to create displays for the Discovery Center and help create lesson plans and activities that are aligned with the Massachusetts State Frameworks and Ocean Literacy Principles. Other Responsibilities: Each intern is assigned to multiple projects in different areas of the organization, e.g. research, fundraising, rehabilitation, marketing, social media or education. A weekly chore will be delegated to each intern to assist with the upkeep of the facility and equipment. Each intern is required to attend regularly scheduled meetings throughout their time at NMLC. At the end of the internship, the intern will deliver a presentation about their experience and projects to staff and volunteers. Positions are unpaid. Interns must have their own transportation. Housing is not provided, but NMLC will offer suggestions. Wild dolphin field opportunities (Bahamas, 2022)

The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP, www.dolphincommunicationproject.org) is currently seeking students (currently enrolled, non-matriculated or recent grads) for two different programs in Bimini, The Bahamas, during summer 2022. Program details are listed below. DCP's mission is to promote the scientific study of dolphins and inspire their conservation. With research ongoing since 1991, our questions focus primarily on communication and behavior among dolphins. Our Bimini, The Bahamas, research site is where we study wild Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins, maintaining photo-ID catalogs with over 300 individuals. All programs may qualify for academic credit, however it is the student's responsibility to arrange this with their home institution. DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL

*DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmental friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 1st of July to 30st November 2021. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos. Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions. The field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be trained to: - Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; - Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; - Access and collect environmental data; - Collect data on behavior, group size, species, etc.; - Collect photos to photo-identification, acoustic recording, and underwater videos; - Use of UAV's for scientific data collections; - Measure water visibility with the Secchi disk methodology; *DATA ANALYSIS: *This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. This internship requires a monetary contribution which is used to off-set the cost of accommodation and running a non-profit. For more information on internship fees for the 2021 season, please contact: interns(a)aimmportugal.org *Included* in the fee is: - Accommodation in the research house; - Transportation to/from the marina; - Meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner); - Fieldwork in the research vessel. *Not included* in the fee is: - Transportation to/from Albufeira; - Meals in restaurants and snacks; - Free time activities; - Personal insurance (all participants should have health and/or travel insurance); - Personal expenses. *INTERNS ARE EXPECTED TO:* - Be above the age of 16; - Have a mature attitude towards marine mammal research and environment; - Be autonomous and flexible; - Be able to live and work in an international team and mainly outdoors at sea; - Speak English; - Participate for minimum 14 days. *Preference will be given* to those who have: - Relevant marine mammal field experience - Working experience on research vessels - Experience working from dolphin/whale watching platforms - Experience in photo-identification - Professional cameras that can be used for photo-ID - Availability to stay for longer periods of time *INTERNSHIP APPLICATION: * Applicants should fill up the online application at: https://www.aimmportugal.org/application-form Applicants should send an e-mail to: interns(a)aimmportugal.org, with the subject “*DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP*”.
