Our Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) course is accredited by Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and run over two days to provide comprehensive coverage of the MMO role. Insight into life offshore and the practicalities of the MMO role ensure a very thorough preparation for prospective MMOs. However, those from an industry background (working alongside MMOs) will benefit from the full exploration of the complexities of mitigation requirements. A scientific background will be an advantage to delegates and a keen interest in marine mammals is key. Our well established Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) course is a three-day course that provides comprehensive PAM training for personnel new to the offshore industry. This course provides the skills needed to use all equipment currently in the marketplace and is aimed at delegates with a scientific background, preferably in biology and marine sciences. The course includes modules on sound in water, marine mammal evolutionary biology and sound production, anthropogenic noise sources and their effect on marine mammals, PAM principles and the role of the PAM operator, Seiche PAM hardware with deployment and operations, PAM software and an introduction to PAMGuard. Our PAM course also includes a practical boat trip on day three. Dear Colleagues, I want to share with you the special issue in the journal Veterinary Sciences (MDPI; IF 2,304; Q1) entitled “Neurodegenerative Diseases: What Can We Find Out in the Animal Brain?” The aim of this Special Issue is to gather neurodegenerative lesions and features among animal species (included marine mammals), exploring findings such as Aβ plaques, tau aggregation, (neurofibrillary tangles or granulovacuolar degeneration), Lewy and pale body formation, cerebrovascular amyloid angiopathy, pigment accumulation, and neuronal intracytoplasmic inclusions, among others. Comparative neuropathology studies could clarify and reveal important aspects of neurodegenerative diseases. Final Reminder: Survey on Research Priorities

Greetings, Just a final reminder that we are looking to get responses from as many people in the marine mammal community as possible. The survey will be up through February 16th. If you could please take the time to help with the survey it would be greatly appreciated! Also, thank you to the many that have already participated, we really appreciate your help! The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Marine Mammal Taxonomic Advisory Group is interested in creating a new resource. The intended result is a list of priority research questions that could be addressed by facilities caring for marine mammals. Research questions can be about anything (e.g., animal welfare, cognition, visitor outcomes, communication, testing bio-logging devices, etc.) that can be addressed by studying animals under human care. Below is a list of the species and a link to a survey where up to three questions can be entered per species. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out and thank you in advance for your time. We hope this new resource will guide the future of marine mammal research not just for AZA but the entire marine mammal community. Hello, SR3 is accepting applications for our 2022 Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Outreach internship. Interns play a critical role in our mission by supporting animal husbandry, field response, and public outreach programs. This year we are able to provide a $1,000 stipend. The application deadline is February 25th. New publication: Humpback whale adult females and calves balance acoustic contact with vocal crypsis during periods of increased separation

Humpback whale adult females and calves balance acoustic contact with vocal crypsis during periods of increased separation. Ecology and Evolution, 12, e8604. https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.8604 ABSTRACT Acoustic communication is important for animals with dependent young, particularly when they are spatially separated. Maternal humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) use acoustic calling to help minimize the risk of separation from their young calves during migration. These pairs also use acoustic crypsis to minimize detection by males. How they balance a restricted active space with the need to maintain acoustic contact during periods of separation is not yet understood. Here, we analyzed movement metrics of tagged adult female-calf pairs during migration to identify two behavioral states, "resting/milling" and "travelling." When travelling, these pairs dived synchronously and exhibited little to no spatial separation. Alternatively, adult females had significantly longer dive durations (p < .01) when resting, and while they spent prolonged times at depth, calves would surface several times independently. This demonstrated that these pairs are frequently separated during periods of rest. We then determined whether the call rates and acoustic levels of these pairs increased with more frequent separation, finding that both adult females and calves significantly increased their call rates, but not levels, when resting. We also found that adult female-calf pairs have a restricted active space, with less than 15% of calls estimated to be detectable beyond 2 km. However, as with call level, detection distance did not differ significantly between the two behavioral states. In summary, adult female-calf pairs maintain successful communication during periods of separation by calling more frequently rather than by producing louder calls. This strategy aids in maintaining acoustic contact while simultaneously limiting detectability by conspecifics. Biofouling on marine mammal tracking devices

Dear Colleagues, We are working on a project to pull together what we know about marine mammal tracking (tag and transmitter) devices as algal or invertebrate species dispersal vectors. We write to ask if you have observed marine invertebrates or algae attached to tracking devices attached to marine mammals, and, if so, if you have either (1) photographs, (2) biofouled devices that we could examine (and return to you) or (3) field notes related to this phenomena? Equally valuable would be any directions in which you might point us, including marine mammal colleagues you know who may have observations to share. *DELFINI DEL PONENTE ASSOCIATION, IMPERIA, ITALY* *Cetaceans and Marine Fauna research project* *Delfini del Ponente is currently looking for and accepting interns to join our research project on bottlenose dolphins and other marine fauna in the Western Ligurian Sea, Imperia (Italy) from March to October**.* *The project* The dolphin research project “Delfini del Ponente”, started in 2018, is the first project focused on monitoring bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) occurrence and distribution in the Western Ligurian Sea. The project is structured on an annual basis, to obtain data not only on the distribution during the Summer, but also changes during the different seasons. The study is already providing very interesting information about this community inside the study area, especially about its social organization, abundance of individuals, distribution, and movements also outside the region. Moreover, our dataset includes data on several cetacean species and also about other marine fauna such as Mediterranean shearwaters (*Puffinus yelkouan)*, Scopoli’s shearwaters (*Calonectris diomedea*), Northern gannets (*Morus bassanus*), Sandwich terns (*Thalasseus sandvicensis*), sunfish (*Mola mola*) among others. Surveys are carried out in coastal waters onboard a dedicated zodiac (6 m inflatable boat) around 10 times per month. Training will focus on collecting photos for photo-ID purposes, environmental, marine traffic, geographical (GPS) and dolphins' behavioural data. Land-based surveys take place in Imperia, in 2 different locations with the aim of collecting data on the presence/absence of dolphins, fishing boats in activity and marine birds. Fieldwork is a great opportunity to get involved and improve skills on cetaceans’ and marine biodiversity’s research. Both land-based and zodiac surveys are weather-dependent, and their number can change each month. Office work (6 hours per day) includes training and lessons to the interns and supervision of all the activities (photo-id work, transcription of data, data entry, QGIS work, etc...) *Where:* Imperia, Italy *When:* 1 March-30 October 2022 (minimum 30 days) Number of interns for month: 2 /3 Activities: • boat-based surveys monitoring the presence and distribution of bottlenose dolphins • data collection of other cetaceans, fishes, seabirds, turtles • classwork, database updating • photo-id matching and analysis • land-based surveys /opportunistic surveys • lessons and training about cetacean ecology, biology and research techniques This is a great opportunity to get involved in cetacean research, encounter marine biodiversity while gaining fieldwork experience, travel and explore the beautiful Liguria region and support cetacean research and conservation .
