With an excellent understanding of the relevant evidence base, you understand how marine pollution and climate change could be affecting marine animals. New paper on baleen whales, prey and climate change

Dear MARMAM readers, On behalf of my co-authors, I am pleased to share our new paper on demographic history of baleen whales and its association with prey and climate change using genetic data. "Strong and lasting impacts of past global warming on baleen whales and their prey." Global Change Biology n/a, no. n/a (2022). https://doi.org/10.1111/gcb.16085 Abstract Global warming is affecting the population dynamics and trophic interactions across a wide range of ecosystems and habitats. Translating these real-time effects into their long-term consequences remains a challenge. The rapid and extreme warming period that occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition (7–12 thousand years ago) provides an opportunity to gain insights into the long-term responses of natural populations to periods with global warming. The effects of this post-LGM warming period have been assessed in many terrestrial taxa, whereas insights into the impacts of rapid global warming on marine taxa remain limited, especially for megafauna. In order to understand how large-scale climate fluctuations during the post-LGM affected baleen whales and their prey, we conducted an extensive, large-scale analysis of the long-term effects of the post-LGM warming on abundance and inter-ocean connectivity in eight baleen whale and seven prey (fish and invertebrates) species across the Southern and the North Atlantic Ocean; two ocean basins that differ in key oceanographic features. The analysis was based upon 7032 mitochondrial DNA sequences as well as genome-wide DNA sequence variation in 100 individuals. The estimated temporal changes in genetic diversity during the last 30,000 years indicated that most baleen whale populations underwent post-LGM expansions in both ocean basins. The increase in baleen whale abundance during the Holocene was associated with simultaneous changes in their prey and climate. Highly correlated, synchronized and exponential increases in abundance in both baleen whales and their prey in the Southern Ocean were indicative of a dramatic increase in ocean productivity. In contrast, the demographic fluctuations observed in baleen whales and their prey in the North Atlantic Ocean were subtle, varying across taxa and time. Perhaps most important was the observation that the ocean-wide expansions and decreases in abundance that were initiated by the post-LGM global warming, continued for millennia after global temperatures stabilized, reflecting persistent, long-lasting impacts of global warming on marine fauna. Dear MARMAM, We are excited to announce that SEAMAMMS will be held May 20th-22nd, 2022 and hosted by the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) in Miami, FL, USA. The Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Marine Mammal Symposium (SEAMAMMS) is a long-standing, regional, scientific marine mammal meeting that is open to all presenters, with an emphasis on undergraduate and graduate students. The SEAMAMMS serves as an excellent and encouraging platform for students to present their research and network with colleagues and experts in the marine mammal field. We were so grateful to everyone who originally signed up in 2020 and are thankful for the opportunity to host the symposium for the first time at RSMAS this year. The symposium will have limited in-person capacity and a virtual option (subject to change). New publication on behavior and group behavioral responses to noise in social delphinids

Significant research has focused on characterizing behavioral responses of protected cetacean species to navy mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS). Controlled exposure experiments (CEE) using animal-borne tags have proved valuable, but smaller dolphins are not amenable to tagging and groups of interacting individuals are more relevant behavioral units for these social species. To fill key data gaps on group responses of social delphinids that are exposed to navy MFAS in large numbers, we describe novel approaches for the coordinated collection and integrated analysis of multiple remotely-sensed datasets during CEEs. This involves real-time coordination of a sonar source, shore-based group tracking, aerial photogrammetry to measure fine-scale movements and passive acoustics to quantify vocal activity. Marine Bioacoustics Summer School (SeaBASS) 2022 Applications Due March 31

We are pleased to announce this year's Marine Bioacoustics Summer School program (SeaBASS 2022). SeaBASS provides the opportunity for currently enrolled graduate students interested in pursuing careers in marine bioacoustics to develop a strong foundation of both marine animal biology and acoustics from distinguished lecturers in the field. The goals of SeaBASS are to discuss important topics in marine bioacoustics, foster technical communication across disciplines, and promote mentoring and collaboration. SeaBASS gives students an opportunity to learn from experts who will discuss a suite of topics not often offered at any one University. The topics covered in the course include: Introduction to Underwater Sound, Sound Propagation, Marine Mammal Biology & Behavior, Fish Communication & Behavior, Hearing, Echolocation, Fisheries Acoustics/Active Acoustic Monitoring, and Passive Acoustic Monitoring. New publication: Changes in the acoustic activity of beaked whales and sperm whales recorded during a naval training exercise off eastern Canada

You can freely access the paper here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-05930-4 Abstract: Experimental research has shown that beaked whales exhibit strong avoidance reactions to naval active sonars used during antisubmarine warfare training exercises, including cessation of echolocation and foraging activity. Behavioural responses to sonar have also been linked to strandings and mortality. Much of the research on the responses of beaked whales and other cetaceans to naval active sonar has occurred on or near U.S. naval training ranges, and the impacts of sonar in other regions remain poorly understood, particularly as these impacts, including mortality, are likely to go unobserved in offshore areas. In September 2016 the multinational naval exercise 'CUTLASS FURY 2016' (CF16) was conducted off eastern Canada. We used passive acoustic recordings collected in the region to quantify the occurrence and characteristics of sonar signals, measure ambient noise levels, and assess changes in the acoustic activity of beaked and sperm whales. The number of hours per day with echolocation clicks from Cuvier's beaked whales and sperm whales were significantly reduced during CF16, compared to the pre-exercise period in 2016 (sperm whales) and to control data from 2015 (both species). Clicks from an unidentified Mesoplodont beaked whale species, sporadically detected prior to CF16, were absent during the exercise and for 7 days afterward. These results suggest that beaked and sperm whales ceased foraging in the vicinity of CF16 and likely avoided the affected area. Such disturbance may have energetic, health, and fitness consequences.
