Abstract: The dive response involves three main components - breath holding, reduced heart rate and increased peripheral vasoconstriction - and is ubiquitous during forced dives in air-breathing vertebrates; however, numerous studies in free-diving animals have shown that the heart rate response to diving varies considerably in a manner that suggests cognitive control. Furthermore, studies on free-diving animals and controlled experiments in trained animals both indicate that the dive response can be conditioned, such that the reduction in heart rate begins before submergence and the extent of the reduction is set early in the dive. In addition, numerous species also experience an increase in heart rate and blood flow during ascent at the end of a dive, a phenomenon commonly called 'ascent tachycardia'. Collectively, these data suggest that although the dive response is under autonomic control, many species can vary its magnitude depending on the length and type of the planned dive - an indication of a role for cognition in the overall physiological responses associated with diving. Here, we provide examples of the conditioned cardiac responses - including anticipatory changes in heart rate - in several diving species and propose potential underlying mechanisms. New publication: Analysis of right whale science and conservation in six US newspapers from 2010 to 2023

It is published open access through Frontiers in Communication <https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/communication/articles/10.3389/fcomm.2…> under the journal's Science and Environmental Communication section. *Title: *A "war" over lobster and whales: The issue-attention cycle, media discourse, and political ecology of right whale science and conservation in six US newspapers *Authors:* Marcus Reamer (corresponding), Catherine Macdonald, Julia Wester, Russell Fielding, Meryl Shriver-Rice *Abstract:* News organizations and journalists are important and influential actors in environmental politics. Their reporting on social and environmental issues often follows issue-attention cycles (IACs) that emphasize drama and problematization to maintain public interest. This study examined nearly 13 years of news coverage to understand the media discourse about the Critically Endangered North Atlantic right whale (NARW) and its conservation. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis were used to analyze 356 texts published in six large US newspapers between January 1, 2010 and March 15, 2023. NARW conservation and management received increased public attention and an IAC began in 2017 after an Unusual Mortality Event began, with 75 percent of the sampled articles (*n* = 267) published from 2017 on. *The Boston Globe* published a majority of the sampled texts (*n* = 209) and *Globe* reporter David Abel was the most prolific journalist with 50 bylines. The coverage featured six themes representing threats to the species, science and technological development, and tourism, local lifestyle, and culture. The most common topic was that of American lobster fishing gear and whale entanglements (*n* = 162, 45.5%). In that discourse journalists emphasized the political ecology of NARW conservation, focusing on disagreements between whale experts and advocates and commercial lobster fishermen and their allies as they sought to influence decision making by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Journalists presented the issue through a conflict frame and each group used distinct discursive strategies in an attempt to shape the discourse and public opinion related to new or stricter regulations for the commercial lobster fishery designed to reduce the risk of entanglement for NARWs. Findings suggest that this IAC related to NARW science and conservation has already moved through at least three of five key stages and will inevitably lose public interest, which has important implications for future communication and advocacy related to NARW conservation. This case study demonstrates the continued importance of media to conservation – as public forums for discussion, essential parts of organizational strategies for change, and as an externality that can influence conservation outcomes. The PMMC rescues, rehabilitates, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research, education, and collaboration. As part of our mission of education, we offer a one-year clinical veterinary internship that provides training in marine mammal and wildlife medicine, rehabilitation, husbandry, necropsy, and research for veterinarians interested in pursuing a career in marine mammal medicine and conservation. seeking fresh barnacle samples from cetaceans

Dear marmam community, My colleagues and I are pleased to announce that we have recently been funded by NSF to construct a genomic phylogeny of the whale and turtle barnacles. Within a year's time or so, we hope to obtain the needed specimens and ask you to keep us in mind when a stranding occurs in your region. We are sending this request broadly not because we need large numbers of samples, but because of the six target species several are not common (comments below). The specimens need to be preserved as fresh as possible. This could mean (in order of desirability): 1) preserving in RNAlater(tm) (we can supply beforehand if you have a crystal ball on strandings), 2) freezing specimens, and 3) preserving in ethanol (95% is better than 70%). As lead PI, I have a NOAA-NMFS parts authorization letter available on request which permits me to obtain barnacle material with adhering cetacean tissue. I can also supply a collection protocol as needed. Samples should be shipped to me with advance notice, and I can provide information for shipment billing. Two Recent Publications: Arctic Seal Muscle Physiology & Sea Otter Foraging Ecology

The first article, featured in Aquatic Mammals, pertains to the muscle physiology of Arctic seals. The second article, featured in Endangered Species Research, reports the foraging ecology of southern sea otters at their northern range extent in California. Both articles are fully open access and links are provided after each abstract below. *Title: ** Comparative muscle physiology of ringed (Pusa hispida), bearded (Erignathus barbatus), and spotted (Phoca largha) seals from the Bering and Chukchi Seas* *Authors*: Mariah L. Tengler, Jennifer Dearolf, Anna L. Bryan, Colleen Reichmuth, Nicole M. Thometz *Abstract*: The physiological properties of marine mammal skeletal muscle are foundational in defining diving and foraging capacities. Further, these parameters can be useful when assessing the behavioral flexibility of species faced with environmental change or disturbance. Herein, we define species- and age-specific muscle physiology for three ice-associated seal species experiencing Arctic warming. Specifically, we evaluated myoglobin content ([Mb]), nonbicarbonate buffering capacity (β), and fiber type profiles of a major locomotor muscle, the longissimus dorsi. Muscle samples were obtained from subsistence harvested ringed (*Pusa hispida*; *n* = 11), bearded (*Erignathus barbatus*; *n* = 41), and spotted (*Phoca largha*; *n* = 12) seals of all ages in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Adult ringed seals had the highest [Mb] (6.67 ± 0.20 g 100 g wet tissue-1), followed by spotted (5.38 ± 0.29 g 100 g wet tissue-1) and bearded (4.55 ± 0.07 g 100 g wet tissue-1) seals. [Mb] increased with age for all species, but rates of increase differed by species. In contrast, β was similar for all species and age classes. We documented higher proportions of fast-twitch relative to slow-twitch fibers in these species, and fiber type proportions did not differ significantly with age. Adult bearded seals exhibited the greatest proportion of fast-twitch fibers (68.7 ± 1.5%), followed by ringed (59.0 ± 4.8%) and spotted (55.1 ± 2.1%) seals. Thometz *Abstract*: Sea otters (*Enhydra lutris*) are vital keystone predators throughout the North Pacific that were nearly extirpated during the maritime fur trade. Recovery of southern sea otters (*E. l. nereis*) has proceeded slowly, with much of their historical range remaining unoccupied, resulting in reduced ecosystem functioning. Numerous studies have used foraging metrics to assess population status of southern sea otters throughout their current range, but little is known about the northern range extent, where a stall in expansion has limited recovery. Thus, we collected census and foraging data of sea otters at Año Nuevo State Park, California, from 2019–2021 to determine sea otter abundance, diet composition, diet diversity, and average energy intake rate at the northern range edge. We then assessed regional population status by comparing values from Año Nuevo with previously collected data from other locations in California, including high-density, range center sites and low-density, range periphery sites. We found that sea otter density at Año Nuevo was greater than surrounding areas at the northern range periphery and average energy intake (95% CI = 9.51 ± 0.91 kcal min-1) more closely resembled values observed at high-density sites. Further, dietary diversity (using Shannon-Wiener index) was intermediate between previously studied high- and low-density populations (H=1.81), with crabs making up the largest proportion of the diet (~56%). If so, then the SMM workshop, "Reducing human impacts on marine mammals through cultural change (principles of psychology & social-marketing): Introduction to Conservation Marketing," might be right for you! Come and learn about the mental barriers to knowledge uptake that are plaguing your life! Get to know a little about the psychology behind messaging, which is making it hard to connect with the people who can make the difference! Delve into some of the social science and marketing tools that could help you overcome the obstacles to create meaningful change to help save your dolphin population! This one-day workshop will be run by Andrew J. Wright, Former President of the Conservation Marketing and Engagement Working Group of the Society for Conservation Biology, and Associate Professor Carla Litchfield, Head of Psychology at the University of South Australia and Leader of the Conservation Psychology and Applied Animal Behaviour Research Group. It'll take place in Perth on *Sunday, 10 November 2024, from 09:00 to 17:00*. We'll take you through the theory and science behind why people do what they do, and why it's often very hard to influence that. We'll explore techniques that have been proven to help advance conservation goals around the world by increasing pro-environmental behaviours. We'll spend the morning developing a foundational knowledge in this material with presentations specifically designed for biologists who have no previous exposure to the social sciences. We'll then spend the afternoon going through some real-world examples of where social science and marketing tools have made a difference. We'll also provide some hands-on sessions to get participants more familiar with the workings of some of the tools available. The intent of this workshop is to help marine mammal scientists become more familiar with the knowledge and tools available to social scientists and give them a basic understanding and appreciation for how the tools work, as well as what is needed in terms of time and resources to support them in practice.
