In the Southern Ocean, a highly biologically productive region containing many endemic species, proactive management is urgently needed to mitigate increasing pressures from fishing, climate change, and tourism. Site-based conservation is one important tool for managing the negative impacts of human activities on ecosystems. The Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) Standard is a standardized framework used to define sites vital for the persistence of global biodiversity based on criteria and quantitative thresholds. We used tracking data from 14 species of Antarctic and subantarctic seabirds and pinnipeds from the publicly available Retrospective Analysis of Antarctic Tracking Data (RAATD) data set to define KBAs for a diverse suite of marine predators. We used track2kba, an R package that supports identification of KBAs from telemetry data through identification of highly used habitat areas and estimates of local abundance within sites. We compared abundance estimates at each site with thresholds for KBA criteria A1, B1, and D1 (related to globally threatened species, individual geographically restricted species, and demographic aggregations, respectively). We identified 30 potential KBAs for 13 species distributed throughout the Southern Ocean that were vital for each individual species, population, and life-history stage for which they were determined. These areas were identified as highly used by these populations based on observational data and complement the ongoing habitat modeling and bioregionalization work that has been used to prioritize conservation areas in this region. Although further work is needed to identify potential KBAs based on additional current and future data sets, we highlight the benefits of utilizing KBAs as part of a holistic approach to marine conservation, given their significant value as a global conservation tool. New publication: Skin and body condition in baleen whales

Diseases of Aquatic Organisms 159:99-115. https://doi.org/10.3354/dao03808 The assessment of free-ranging cetacean health through the study of skin conditions using photographs has gained prominence in recent years. However, little attention has been given to the relationships between cetacean skin conditions, species, and body condition. To explore this relationship among baleen whale species along the Northwestern coast of Spain, we employed a non-invasive method involving photograph analysis. In this study, we examined skin conditions (including injuries, epizoites and ectoparasites, pigmentation disorders, skin lesions, and anatomical malformations) and body condition (overall physical contours and form, as an indicator of nutritional status and health) in 3 species of whales (blue, fin, and minke whales). This methodology facilitated the identification of 29 subcategories of distinct skin conditions and an assessment of body condition over a 5 yr period (2017 to 2021). In our study, we present evidence linking hypopigmentation, protruding pieces of tissue, and tattoo-like lesions to ‘Poor’ body condition in the 3 baleen whale species. Fin whales exhibited a higher susceptibility to mottling (prevalence = 17.7%), while blue whales were more prone to starbursts (prevalence = 90.5%). Additionally, we found a significant relationship between skin condition diversity and individual body condition. Our findings contribute valuable information to the broader understanding of the health status of baleen whales. Further investigations are necessary to delve into the etiology of the documented skin conditions and their potential implications for individual survival. This study serves as a foundation for ongoing research aimed at advancing our comprehension of these findings. Chair, Senior Scientist - EcoMap We are looking for an experienced research scientist to join our team at the New England Aquarium as the Chair of our EcoMap program. In this role, you will lead a program that studies the impact of climate change and ocean use on marine species. Existing research and staff expertise in this program primarily focus on aerial survey design and execution, species distribution modeling, and risk assessment to inform the management and conservation of marine mammals. We are seeking someone who can contribute their own research to support our conservation goals related to climate change and responsible ocean use. While a background in the effects of climate change on highly migratory megafauna is preferred, we welcome applicants with expertise in a broad range of ecological and oceanographic disciplines. This position provides opportunities for growth in programmatic focal areas, including new field work opportunities, data collection methodologies, scientific inquiries, and taxa. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. While nine months of annual salary support will be provided, you are expected to lead fundraising efforts for the program and your residual salary, as well as contribute to broader organizational efforts. Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce our recent paper: Synchronization of bowhead whales by Podolskiy EA, Teilmann J, Heide-Jørgensen MP (2024), Physical Review Res., DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevResearch.6.033174 https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.6.033174 [Abstract] Inferring animal behavior from irregular tracking data is a challenging area of research. It is particularly difficult to determine if whales, who intermittently explore different depths while staying in the same acoustic medium, synchronize their days with their prey and each other over kilometer-scale distances. Here, we aim to better understand the diving behavior of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in Disko Bay, West Greenland, using the largest high-frequency dive–depth dataset to date (144 days at 1 Hz from 12 different whales) and nonlinear dynamics, whereby we consider the whales to be chaotic (aperiodic) oscillators. We find that foraging whales dive deeper during the daytime in spring, with this diving behavior being in apparent synchrony with their vertically migrating prey. Furthermore, we demonstrate that bowhead whales can synchronize their behavior with each other for up to a week while staying within a range of up to ∼100 km. This discovery is in agreement with the acoustic herd theory of long-range signalling in baleen whales. On the other hand, the synchrony might emerge when animals experience similar ecological conditions, which are, however, difficult to name because targeted depths and locations were separated for 100s of m and 10s of km, respectively. Our study identifies a framework for studying the sociality and behavior of such chaotically moving, unrestrained marine animals and calls for more simultaneous tagging campaigns. General Summary: The Assistant Stranding Coordinator will be responsible for conducting beach surveys for active stranding surveillance along Southwest Louisiana beaches, lab and field necropsies of marine mammals, completing and uploading all essential paperwork associated with stranding and necropsies into national databases, supervising interns from McNeese State University, coordinating the AAR volunteer corps in the area as needed, representing Audubon at various outreach and education opportunities around the Gulf Coast, as well as help cover calls for the AAR 24 hour stranding hotline. The Assistant Stranding Coordinator candidate should be aware that historically the incidences of live marine mammal and sea turtle rescues and transport to rehab occur infrequently. Royal Society Open Science 11:231917. https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.231917 Abstract: Polar offshore environments are considered the last pristine soundscapes, but accelerating climate change and increasing human activity threaten their integrity. In order to assess the acoustic state of polar oceans, there is the need to investigate their soundscape characteristics more holistically. We apply a set of 14 ecoacoustic metrics (EAMs) to identify which metrics are best suited to reflect the characteristics of disturbed and naturally intact polar offshore soundscapes. We used two soundscape datasets: (i) the Arctic eastern Fram Strait (FS), which is already impacted by anthropogenic noise, and (ii) the quasi-pristine Antarctic Weddell Sea (WS). Our results show that EAMs when applied in concert can be used to quantitatively assess soundscape variability, enabling the appraisal of marine soundscapes over broad spatiotemporal scales. The tested set of EAMs was able to show that the eastern FS, which is virtually free from sea ice, lacks seasonal soundscape dynamics and exhibits low acoustic complexity owing to year-round wind-mediated sounds and anthropogenic noise. By contrast, the WS exhibits pronounced seasonal soundscape dynamics with greater soundscape heterogeneity driven in large part by the vocal activity of marine mammal communities, whose composition in turn varies with the prevailing seasonal sea ice conditions. PFAS bioaccumulate and biomagnify throughout the food chain, and their toxicity and potential adverse health effects can potentially represent a threat to living organisms. In this study, we described PFAS profiles in the serum of two species of zoo-based bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, n = 14 individuals) and killer whales (Orcinus orca, n = 14 individuals) from three locations (California, Florida, and Texas, USA), from 1994 to 2020. Potential physiological effects of PFAS were also explored by measuring different biomarkers (cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, TBARS, and hydrogen peroxide) while accounting for individual age, sex, and reproductive stage. All PFAS were detected in at least one of the individuals, considering both species. ?PFAS reached 496 ng mL?1 in bottlenose dolphins and! > 230 ng mL?1 in killer whales. In both species, the PFAS with higher mean concentrations were PFOS (108.0?183.0 ng ml?1) and PFNA (14.40?85.50 ng ml?1), which are long-chain compounds. Newborn individuals of both species were also exposed to PFAS, indicating transference via placenta and lactation. Linear mixed model analyses indicated significant correlations between aldosterone, month, year, location, and status; and between hydrogen peroxide, month, year, age, status, ?PFAS, and ? short-chain PFAS in killer whales suggesting seasonal variations related to the animal's physiological state (e.g., reproductive cycles, stress responses, weaning events) and increased reactive oxygen species formation due to PFAS exposure. Given our results, other contaminant classes should be investigated in cetaceans as they might have additive and synergistic detrimental effects on these individuals.
