Abstract: Allosuckling, the suckling of milk from a non-biological mother, occurs in some species of mammals. Allosuckling has not been quantified in baleen whale calves, therefore, we examine allosuckling in southern right whales (SRWs; Eubalaena australis) off Australia. SRWs are listed as Endangered under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act as their numbers remain below the estimated historical abundance. On a small aggregation area, where there were three mother-calf pairs present, we aimed to quantify the proportion of time that calves allosuckled relative to the time spent filial suckling. To achieve this, we conducted unmanned aerial vehicle focal follows on mother-calf pairs and video recorded all interactions among pairs (n = 22 interactions, 3 h total observation time). During interactions, allosuckling occurred in seven interactions, and filial nursing occurred in 11 interactions. One of the calves performed allosuckling, and it was the largest calf with the largest mother. The calf allosuckled from both of the non-biological mothers present. The average proportion of time allosuckling per interaction was 4% (95% CI = ± 0.01, range = 0-0.25), while filial nursing for the same calf was 8% (95% CI = ± 0.02, range = 0-0.37). It is important to understand the frequency of allosuckling, in order to quantify the energetic benefits for allosuckling calves and the energetic cost incurred by targeted non-biological mothers. New publication: Novel presentation of coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) in a sea otter

Journal of Wildlife Diseases 60(1):223-228. https://doi.org/10.7589/JWD-D-23-00045 Summary: Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) is a climate driven One Health issue impacting humans, domestic animals, and wildlife with a hotspot in San Luis Obispo County, California. Marine mammals are infected via land to sea transfer of airborne fungal spores during dry windy conditions. Sea otters typically present with severe, fatal pulmonary disease and systemic fungal dissemination. Here we present a novel case of a dead stranded southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) with a distended pericardial sac filled with thousands of free-floating masses in the absence of gross pulmonary lesions, confirmed as Coccidioides immitis via culture, serology, PCR, and sequencing. Anthropogenic land use practices that cause soil disturbance and exacerbate drought enhance the risk of exposure. Range expansion of this zoonotic pathogen and increased incidence in humans and animals is predicted with climate change, so clinicians and biologists should be aware of this unusual presentation. The transboundary area of the Strait of Gibraltar is home to seven protected cetacean species that are threatened by high intensity of maritime traffic. More comprehensive knowledge of cetaceans and maritime traffic is required, together with analyses of legislations, strategies and policies. 2. This study quantitatively investigates cetacean distribution and maritime traffic intensity and, for the species of community interest bottlenose dolphin, habitat suitability. Results are qualitatively discussed considering the overlap of cetacean hot spots with different maritime activities and the consistency of spatial conservation management measures in force. 3. The Fixed Line Transect Mediterranean Monitoring Network protocols were followed for 59 visual surveys using ferries as observation platforms for monitoring cetaceans and maritime traffic. Surveys were carried out along the transects between Algeciras and Ceuta and between Algeciras and Tanger-Med, in 2018 and 2019. 264 cetacean sightings, including seven different species and four near-miss collision events (involving pilot, sperm and fin whales), were reported. 4. Monitoring cetaceans from ferries in the Strait provided insights into cetacean distribution and maritime traffic, enabling the identification of cetacean hot spots, suitable habitats and maritime traffic high-risk zones. 5. A transboundary management effort is required, together with an adaptive approach for protecting highly mobile species such as cetaceans. Proposals include a long-term cetacean monitoring program carried out by dedicated observers on board ferries as a cost-effective methodology and mandatory training for crew members, to increase cetacean knowledge and reduce collision risk. 6. The designation of an international temporal or, in some zones, permanent speed reduction area (i.e., Cetacean Critical Navigation Zone, with a maximum speed of 13 knots) and of a micro-sanctuary with a seasonal no-take zone in the Bay between Algeciras and Gibraltar, together with international surveillance, are recommended measures for the enhancement of conservation efforts in the Strait. New publication: Visualisation of mercury in bottlenose dolphin samples

The North Sea is an ecologically rich habitat for marine wildlife which has also been impacted by industrial developments and anthropogenic emissions of contaminants such as mercury. <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/marine-ma mmal> Marine mammals are particularly susceptible to mercury exposure, due to their trophic position, long lifespan, and dependence on (increasingly contaminated) aquatic prey species. To mitigate impact, marine mammals can detoxify <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/methylmer cury> methylmercury by binding it to selenium-containing biomolecules, creating insoluble mercury <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/selenide> selenide granules. Here, liver, kidney, muscle, and brain samples from an adult male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with known elevated mercury concentrations were analysed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tiemannite (HgSe) deposits were identified in all organs, ranging from 400 nm to 5 μm in diameter, with particle size being organ-dependent. Although reported in other studies, this is the first time that the three-dimensional nature of tiemannite is captured in marine mammal tissue. [Marmam] New publication - Harbour and Grey Seal Vocalisations in Offshore Waters (Ireland and UK)

Dear MARMAM community, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our recent *open-access publication*: Static Acoustic Monitoring of Harbour (*Phoca vitulina*) and Grey Seals (*Halichoerus grypus*) in the Malin Sea: A Revolutionary Approach in Pinniped Conservation. Published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, you can find it following the link: https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1312/12/1/118 *Abstract:* Harbour and grey seals rely on acoustic signals to mate, socialise and defend their territory. Previous studies have focused on their behaviour, movements and communication from the coast, leaving a knowledge gap in the offshore environments, and therefore being unable to determine the proper use they give to those areas and the risks they face around them. Acoustic data collected with a SoundTrap were analysed to assess the detectability of both species in the Malin Sea. Vocalisations were classified based on aural and visual features, as well as using non-parametric classification trees. Differences in the vocalisation rate of grey seals per diel, season and tidal state were also assessed through Generalised Linear Mixed Models, obtaining significant results, and finding similarities in the vocalisations of grey seals with the Scottish and Irish populations. A small sample of adult and pup harbour seals was detected, and differences in call type and number of detections per type were found across the seasons. These results show the importance of the area for both species, and lay the foundations for future studies, which will help to implement proper conservation measures such as Marine Protected Areas. Paper: Sperm whale size-classes estimates in Irish waters (acoustically derived)

Sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus are characterised by a demographic spatial segregation, associated with a conspicuous sexual dimorphism reflected in their vocalisations. These characteristics make acoustic techniques very relevant to the study of sperm whale population structure, especially in remote, challenging environments. The reliability of using inter-pulse intervals of sperm whale clicks to infer body size has long been verified and extensively used. We provide the first size structure estimates of the sperm whale population in an area where assumptions on population structure mainly relied on sparse observations at sea, whaling records and stranding data. Over 10,000 hours of acoustic data collected using both static acoustic recorders and towed hydrophone arrays in Irish offshore waters were processed using a machine learning-based tool aimed at automatically extracting inter-pulse intervals from sperm whale recordings. Our analyses suggested that, unlike previously thought, large males would not account for the majority of the animals recorded in the area. We showed that adult females/juvenile males (length 9-12 m) were predominant, accounting for 49% (n = 788) of the number of individuals recorded (n = 1,595), while the proportions of immature individuals (length<9 m) and adult males (length >12 m) were well balanced, accounting for 25% (n = 394) and 26% (n = 413) of the recorded whales, respectively. Our data also suggested some size segregation may be occurring within the area, with smaller individuals to the south. The implications of such findings are crucial to the management of the population and provide an important baseline to monitor changes in population structure, particularly relevant under changing habitat conditions. VOLUNTEER AND INTERN RECRUITMENT FOR THE MARINE MAMMAL OBSERVATIONS BY PROJECT MANAIA & DMAD

Dear MARMAM committee, Please find below details of our recent volunteer call for marine mammal observations in the Ionian and Aegean sea, where you can collect scientific data on cetaceans through boat surveys - Project Manaia, an Ocean Conservation NGO founded by Manuel Marinelli in 2014. Based in Austria, under the leadership of Manuel this organisation, is on a mission across the Mediterranean to preserve seagrass, investigate invasive species, and clear marine debris. Project Manaia is committed to making a lasting impact, and we're reaching out to explore potential collaborations and partnerships that align with its mission. More details on the project can be found here: https://projectmanaia.at We are looking for an enthusiastic team of volunteers during our cetacean expedition in the Ionian and Aegean seas. The expedition takes place between 21th April and 18th May 2024, with a min placement duration of 14 days. The applications are welcomed until the 1th April 2024. REQUIREMENTS -True interest for marine conservation, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly; -Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment; -Respect for the organisation's rules and willingness to follow standards and procedures; -Proven experience of working effectively as part of a team; -Fluent English (both spoken and written) and good communication skills; -Willingness to learn new software applications. -Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage. -Satisfied level of swimming FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Performing boat-based surveys -Collecting marine mammals’ sighting and behavioural data, as well as environmental and anthropogenic data; -Operating Logger 2010 software on data collection -Data entry and analysis; -Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; -Promoting citizen-science activities TRAINING The DMAD-Marine Mammals Research Association team provides training as well as mentoring.
