Louis M. Herman, Ph.D. and Emeritus Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will always be remembered for his innovative, creative, and scientifically rigorous approach to the study of the marine mammals he so loved, and for the future generations of marine mammal researchers he and his work continue to inspire. The *Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship* supports research projects that contribute to our understanding of either cetacean cognition and sensory perception (laboratory or field studies), or humpback whale behavioural ecology or communication. Work with other marine mammals that especially enhances our understanding of their cognitive abilities will also be considered. Eligible candidates include graduate students and those students who have completed their Masters or PhD within the past three years and are members of the Society of Marine Mammalogy. PhD opportunity on dolphin movements at the University of St Andrews

Dear MARMAM The University of St Andrews, in collaboration with Morigenos - Slovenian Marine Mammal Society, is recruiting a PhD student interested in studying dolphin movements. This is a fully funded PhD at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, UK. Movement is an important function of organisms, which has an impact on lives of individuals, populations, interactions between species and with humans, as well as on ecosystem processes. Ecologists collect data on animal movement through multiple approaches, including photo-identification. In this project, the successful applicant will study movements of bottlenose dolphins using a spatio-temporal networks approach from human mobility research. Specifically, the project will use long-term photo-identification data to build origin-destination (OD) flow networks, which are common in studies of different types of human mobility, but they are not well-known in movement ecology. Here, we will investigate how spatio-temporal network analysis can be applied to the study of marine mammal movement, using a well-studied population of bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) in the northern Adriatic Sea as a case study. The student will be based at the University of St Andrews under the supervision of Dr Urska Demsar (University of St Andrews), and co-supervised by Dr Tilen Genov (Morigenos and the University of Primorska). Candidates should have a solid technical background in spatial data science or geoinformatics, and an interest in modelling of ecological processes. They should also have coding experience (preferably R or Python, but also Matlab, C++ or similar is appropriate). IFAW Marine Mammal Rescue Stranding Internships - Summer 2024

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for summer 2024 Marine Mammal Stranding Internships. IFAW Marine Mammal Stranding Internship Summer Session 2024 (First Week of June, 2024 - Last Week of August, 2024) Complete Applications due: February 15th, 2024 Program Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 270 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. In addition to stranding response, IFAW's MMRR division is introducing the Cetacean Intensive Care Unit (CICU) located at the Dolphin Rescue Center in Orleans, MA. CICU is a short-term holding facility (96 hours) that aims to provide rehabilitative care to dolphins and porpoises experiencing acute effects of stranding. Stranding Intern Duties * Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data. * Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings. * May have the opportunity to assist the CICU program with aspects of their operations opportunistically and as needed. This could include animal care (i.e. in-water support, assist during procedures, monitoring animal behavior etc.), CICU education and outreach, CICU readiness and cleaning, etc. * Stranding / necropsy readiness: cleaning, organizing and maintaining stranding response and necropsy gear, equipment and facilities, restocking kits and supplies. * Data entry / sample processing: assist in entry of stranding data. Final Incidental Take Regulations for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial (CVOW-C) Project, Offshore Virginia

Dear Colleagues, On Monday, January 22, 2024, NOAA Fisheries will publish the final incidental take regulations related to Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Commercial (CVOW-C) Project <https://www.boem.gov/renewable-energy/state-activities/CVOW-C>. The effective dates for these regulations are February 5, 2024 through February 4, 2029. Under an agreement between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Dominion Energy, the project is expected to deliver an estimated 2,500-3,000 megawatts of clean energy to Virginia. Pursuant to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, these regulations will govern the “take” of small numbers of marine mammals exposed to elevated underwater noise generated by the project’s activities over a five-year period. NOAA Fisheries has determined the take that may be authorized under the final rule will have a negligible impact on all affected marine mammal species and stocks. No mortality, serious injury, or non-auditory injury is anticipated to occur or authorized under the final rule. The final regulations include mandatory mitigation measures such as seasonal restrictions, use of sound attenuation devices, soft-starts and ramp-ups, visual and acoustic monitoring, and implementation of clearance and shutdown zones that will be undertaken by the wind developer that ensure the least practicable adverse impact on marine mammals and their habitat. Monitoring and reporting measures to better understand those impacts. Impacts to a small number of North Atlantic right whales are expected to be limited to short-term behavioral disturbance (Level B harassment). NOAA Fisheries anticipates making a final decision regarding issuance of the associated Letter of Authorization on February 5, 2024. New publication: The Cetacean Sanctuary: A Sea of Unknowns

I am pleased to share my new publication in the journal Animals with the MARMAM community: Bruck JN. The Cetacean Sanctuary: A Sea of Unknowns. Animals. 2024; 14(2):335. https://doi.org/10.3390/ani14020335 Summary: Sanctuary is a term with implicit meaning associated with refuge and safety. In the animal husbandry setting, we have used this term to describe many different types of enclosures, with very little standardization of what this term should mean in terms of physical space, much less welfare in a broad sense. Here, I consider how extreme space, the deemphasis of the human–cetacean relationship, breeding restrictions, donation-based funding models, and current practices in public messaging create potential challenges for cetacean sanctuaries moving forward. I then offer experimental approaches to assessing the potential effectiveness of cetacean sanctuaries in improving cetacean welfare. To ensure the success of sanctuaries in maximizing animal welfare, it is essential to critically evaluate sanctuary standards against what is currently known about animals under managed care, as well as to determine what data are necessary to fully evaluate animal welfare in sanctuaries before these facilities are constructed. We are pleased to announce this year's Marine Bioacoustics Summer School program (SeaBASS 2024). SeaBASS provides the opportunity for currently enrolled graduate students interested in pursuing careers in marine bioacoustics to develop a strong foundation of both marine animal biology and acoustics from distinguished lecturers in the field. The goals of SeaBASS are to discuss important topics in marine bioacoustics, foster technical communication across disciplines, and promote mentoring and collaboration. SeaBASS gives students an opportunity to learn from experts who will discuss a suite of topics not often offered at any one University. The topics covered in the course include: Introduction to Underwater Sound, Sound Propagation, Marine Mammal Biology & Behavior, Fish Communication & Behavior, Hearing, Echolocation, Fisheries Acoustics/Active Acoustic Monitoring, and Passive Acoustic Monitoring. Allied Whale/Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. Research Assistant Positions: 2024 Field Season

Allied Whale Internship Program Allied Whale (AW), the marine mammal research lab of College of the Atlantic and Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. (BHWW) seeks 4 interns/research assistants for the 2024 field season. These are entry-level research positions designed to offer experience for individuals seeking to develop their professional careers in marine mammal research. One summer position (May 15 through August 31) and three full season positions (May 15 through October 15) are available. Overview of position: This is a unique internship program in that the selected individuals will have the opportunity to participate and receive training in a wide range of marine mammal research activities Allied Whale while also working as a crew/scientist aboard commercial whale watching trips operating from Bar Harbor, Maine. Allied Whale currently supports field projects in the trophic ecology of humpback and fin whales, the ongoing housing and maintenance of the North Atlantic humpback and fin whale photo ID catalogs, an active stranding response program, and a research/education partnership with Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. In addition, Allied Whale maintains the facilities on and conducts research from Mount Desert Rock, a remote offshore island. The interns play a critical role in the success of the field season and serve as support to all aspects of summer activities within both Allied Whale and Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. Description of duties: Upon arrival in May, all interns will receive research, boat crew, and Gulf of Maine natural history training by both Allied Whale and the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company staff. As the Allied Whale field season does not begin until early June- the first several weeks will be focused on hands-on training of whale watch deckhand responsibilities, helping with boat maintenance, and assisting with whale catalog matching in the office or stranding response. Once the season is in full swing, interns will rotate through shifts working as a Research Assistant/Deckhand (RA) for the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co., shifts in the Allied Whale office, shifts at the Mount Desert Rock field station, and time off. Every week, schedules will be different and weather dependent. A typical week in June-August may include 2-4 days scheduled as researchers on Whale Watch vessels, 1-2 days scheduled in the office, and two days off (these days may or may not be consecutive). Weather may cause shifts to be canceled and some weeks may be lighter in load or responsibilities. Below are specific expectations for each designated shift: Whale watch trips: Research responsibilities on the whale watch trips include searching for whales, photo-identification of whales, and behavioral data collection. RAs will also collect pelagic seabird data during offshore travel to the whale feeding areas. Beyond research, RAs are responsible for assisting the naturalist in promoting education and conservation programs on each trip. In this, maintaining a positive, professional, and friendly demeanor while engaging whale watch passengers and fellow crew is necessary. Deckhand responsibilities include line handling, vessel cleaning, helping seasick passengers, and passenger safety. When whale watch trips cancel for weather, crew may be asked to report for duty to complete maintenance on the vessel. Allied Whale office shifts: On scheduled office days, interns will be required to be available in the Allied Whale office from 9AM-4PM. During those hours, interns will match individual whales to our catalog, enter their whale watch data into the database, manage the Adopt-a-whale program, answer phone calls to the office, and be on call for assisting with response to strandings or necropsies. Interns schedule for office shifts will also be on call for boat research days. Allied Whale boat research days: When weather permits, interns will assist Allied Whale staff and graduate students on trips offshore to collect biopsy samples of humpback and fin whales. While on board one of the research vessels, interns will be responsible for collecting photo identification of whales and recording data. Interns will be responsible for processing images from these trips. If schedule allows, RAs may also participate in an overnight trip to collect samples in Canada. Mount Desert Rock: We hope for interns to also complete several shifts (each at least a week in length) at our offshore research station Mount Desert Rock. While on the island, interns will participate in land-based whale monitoring from the lighthouse tower, seal counts, gull counts, and maintenance/construction projects at the station. Interns will also receive experience working in a remote off-the-grid location. Once hired, RAs will work to develop a collaborative group project (on seal colony, intertidal community, nesting birds, jellies, etc.) and will take turns with data collection during their shifts offshore. RAs will also stay in contact with the BHWW office with sightings reports. Pay/Housing: Those accepted to the program are able to earn income by their work on the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Deckhands are paid $70 a trip (at the height of summer, there are 2 trips running a day). Interns also receive free First Aid Certification. Provided housing in downtown Bar Harbor is mandatory for a fee. Rent for the season will total approximately $2080 for summer interns and $2350 for full season interns. While at Mount Desert Rock, food is provided for free. **After August 31, if any of the summer interns are interested they are welcome to work full time for the remainder of the season as crew for the BHWW as deckhand/galley on lighthouse trips, nature cruises, whale watches, and cruise ship tendering operations. Qualifications: Applicants should have a college background or be currently enrolled in a biology, ecology, and/or marine sciences program. Previous data collection experience in a research setting and/or knowledge of marine mammals are great advantages. While training will be provided and no prior boating/camera experience is required, time spent offshore or skills in photography are also assets. Due to Coast Guard requirements, all crew onboard US commercial vessels and therefore all research assistants/interns, must be US citizens or have permanent resident alien status. Also, all interns will be drug screened prior to employment and will be enrolled in a random drug testing program. Most importantly, applicants must be positive in attitude, flexible to quickly changing schedules, able to work independently, and be seaworthy/comfortable working on boats in rough weather. Lastly, because of the community living situation both in Bar Harbor and on Mount Desert Rock, applicants must get along well with others and be able to handle working in a team setting.
