MareTerra Onlus (www.mareterra-erc.org) is offering internships to join research projects on the conservation of the bottlenose dolphins and marine environment from May to October 2024 in Sardinia island, a hotspot of biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea. MareTerra is a non-profit organization created in 2012 by experienced researchers promoting the conservation of nature and sustainable development. On board of our boats, interns will join dolphin-watching activities and learn research methods to monitor the habitat use, abundance, distribution and bioacoustic of the bottlenose dolphins logging data into our database. Interns will collect georeferenced data on dolphins, fishing activities and boat traffic that impact their behaviour. Our research projects aim to implement measures for marine ecosystem conservation and promote a sustainable and responsible management of fishing and tourism activities. Working in an international and multicultural context, our interns will play an active role in environmental education to develop awareness and respect for the marine environment among tourists and locals. Marine Mammal Science, 1–11. https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.13090 Abstract Maritime traffic is a major contributor of anthropogenic disturbance for cetaceans, especially for coastal populations, such as that of resident common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Sado estuary (Portugal). Animals have been found to adjust their vocal behavior by changing vocal rates, or call frequency and/or duration, to overcome masking effects of underwater noise. To evaluate the potential impacts of boat traffic on the acoustic behavior of these dolphins, emission rates and acoustic characteristics of whistles and burst-pulsed signals were analyzed with and without boats operating nearby. In this study, no significant differences were found for emission rates of each type of vocal element in the presence of vessels. However, significant differences were found in acoustic parameters, namely changes in frequency and duration, for whistles and for pulsed sounds (creaks, grunts, squeaks, and gulps). These changes, such as a shift in vocal frequencies and production of shorter signals, may represent behavioral strategies to compensate for the noisy environment. Although resident bottlenose dolphins in the Sado region seem to have developed some tolerance to vessel noise, continuous noise exposure and noise-induced frequency shifts in vocal outputs could have indirect fitness costs for this population. Fine-scale spatial variability of marine acoustic environment corresponds with habitat utilization of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins in Hong Kong waters. Ecological Indicators, 158, 111228. The full article is open access and available online at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolind.2023.111228 Abstract: Acoustic properties of the underwater environment are important in maintaining biological processes of various marine organisms. However, with the increasing level of underwater noise in the global ocean, there is a growing need to better understand how marine animals use soundscape cues in their habitat selection. Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) inhabiting the Pearl River Estuary, southeast China, live in one of world’s most developed and noisiest coastal environment and are subjected to many sources of anthropogenic noise. To investigate whether spatial variability of underwater soundscape corresponds with their habitat utilization, we collected daytime underwater recordings in western Hong Kong waters from mid-2016 to mid-2018, and quantified the spatial pattern of marine acoustic environment and its differing characteristics in a fine spatial scale. We developed a framework of soundscape information retrieval to investigate spectral features that may facilitate identification of dolphins’ core habitats. Our findings reveal that a spectral feature, which peaks at 2 kHz, is a reliable predictor of humpback dolphin core habitat. Further modelling of spatial and seasonal variations of underwater soundscape demonstrates that the relative strength of this spectral feature is positively correlated with the sighting rates of humpback dolphins throughout the year. Although the source of the 2 kHz feature remains unknown, it is likely associated with humpback dolphins’ prey. We suggest that underwater acoustic environment represents an important component in evaluating the quality and suitability of coastal habitats for the daily needs of this threatened dolphin species. Local and regional conservation authorities should include habitat-specific baseline soundscape data when developing conservation management strategies. Preferred Education and Experience: This position requires a combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in biology, marine science, or related field. Preference for experience with research, specifically laboratory techniques that require pipetting and working with laboratory equipment. Research experience can be from undergraduate course work. Cetus is dedicated to protecting the lives of whales in the wild through research, education and direct intervention. Cetus was founded in 2005 to address the increasing endangerment of BC's killer whales due to human activities. We focus directly on one of the three key contributors to killer whale endangerment: vessel traffic disturbance. We work in the field to protect whales and other marine mammals from harassment and harm. As vessel traffic in the region increases, Cetus's work becomes more and more crucial to their survival. For more information please visit our website: www.cetussociety.org The Robson Bight Marine Warden Program operates in Johnstone Strait, in the waters around the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve, on the traditional territories of the Namgis, Tlowitsis, and Mamalilikulla peoples. The ecological reserve is designated for the protection of critical habitat of the northern resident killer whales. This is a unique area where the whales often come to rub their bodies on specific smooth pebbled beaches. Our marine wardens monitor vessels and marine mammal populations and educate boaters and kayakers about the reserve and the impacts around it. The Robson Bight Marine Warden Program is comprised of two parts; a water-based monitoring and educational component, and a land-based monitoring station called Eagle Eye, situated on a cliff opposite the ecological reserve. *Cetus is looking for enthusiastic, hard-working, and motivated individuals to fill the Robson Bight Marine Warden Program Summer Volunteer positions:* Volunteer positions will be based out of a rustic field camp in Boat Bay on West Cracroft Island, located near Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada. Positions will be offered between *June 24th and September 5th 2024*. Preference will be given to those who can stay for the full 10 weeks. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to be involved with a variety of possible tasks ranging from education and interpretive talks to marine mammal monitoring and data collection. Our programs focus on protecting British Columbia’s northern resident killer whales, and other marine mammal populations from vessel traffic, while encouraging others to do the same. Sea Watch Foundation internships in Cardigan Bay

Internship applications to work with the Sea Watch Foundation's Cardigan Bay Monitoring Project are closing soon! Interns are invited to assist the Sea Watch Foundation (SWF) with the running of the Cardigan Bay Monitoring Project. The project is based in the picturesque town of New Quay, West Wales, and supports the conservation management of one of only two semi-resident bottlenose dolphin populations in the UK. Interns will gain experience in the following areas: Conducting land-based surveys for marine mammals Conducting boat based line transect surveys for marine mammals Performing photo-identification matching Using equipment such as DSLR cameras, GPS units and other field equipment Data entry using Excel and Access based databases Public speaking Running and organising public awareness and outreach activities Fieldwork is weather dependent but interns are scheduled on a daily land based watch and a full day of wildlife boat trips once a week. In addition to this, full day line transect surveys for bottlenose dolphins are conducted regularly within the Cardigan Bay and Pen Llyn a’r Sarnau Special Areas of Conservation. Interns are required from early April until the end of October 2024. The research season is split into four separate periods lasting between 7 and 8 weeks. The research periods for the 2024 season are: Period 1: April 1 - May 26 (8 weeks)  Period 2: May 27- July 14 (7 weeks)  Period 3: July 15 - September 1 (7 weeks)  Period 4: September 2 - October 27 (8 weeks) Interns will be trained in boat survey protocols, and photo-identification of bottlenose dolphins but the following skills are advantageous: Strong team player with a sense of humour with previous experience supervising volunteers as you’ll be living and working with a small team in the changeable Welsh weather! Ability to work independently a background in marine biology/environmental science or similar, prior fieldwork experience is beneficial, particularly photo-identification Good IT skills Good written and verbal communication skills Interns will be based in New Quay, Ceredigion, West Wales. Accommodation is provided by a private landlord through rental of a house that interns share at a rate of around £82 per person per week.
