Apologies for cross-posting We are proud to announce a training workshop "Introduction to Changing the Behaviour of People to Advance Marine Mammal Conservation Goals" to be held in association with the World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona on Saturday 7th December, 2019. Success in the conservation of marine mammals often relies upon the adoption of one or more sustainable behaviours by a specific group of people. Unfortunately, scientists and conservationists typically struggle to induce such changes due to the belief that people simply lack the knowledge and understanding required. In fact, provision of information is not enough to incite behavioural change and it may, on occasion, actually set back the wider cause. This full-day workshop is designed to introduce marine mammal scientists to existing tools that they may not be aware of to improve their ability to achieve the changes needed to affect conservation, and will be run by members of the Society for Conservation Biology’s Social Science & Conservation Marketing and Engagement Working Groups. BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN ITALY DEADLINE 15TH OF JULY WHERE: Imperia, Italy WHEN: September-October-November Minimum required: 30 days Number of interns per month: 2/3 About The project The dolphin research project “Delfini del Ponente” http://delfinidelponente.costabalenae.it/ is the first project focused on monitoring bottlenose dolphins in the Western Ligurian Sea. Due to the morphology of the seafloor, this area is not a usual habitat for this species and historically, sightings have been more rare and sporadic than in the Levantine side of the region. The continental shelf is, in fact, very short and high depths (around 2000 m) are reached quite close to the shore making the area suitable for other cetacean species but not for bottlenose dolphins, which tend to remain in waters with a depth not exceeding 200 m. Despite this knowledge of the range of the species, an interesting change has been noted in recent years in the area. Reports of bottlenose dolphins by others research groups, fishermen and whale watching vessels are almost tripled compared to previous seasons. Therefore, the project aims to monitor bottlenose dolphins in the region to understand the extent of this change and what drove it. It is structured on an annual basis, in order to obtain data not only on the distribution during the summer, but also changes during the different seasons. During the dedicated survey, data on marine birds ( Gannets, Shearwaters, Terns .. ), fish species and turtles are collected. Programme: Interns are invited to assist the biologists of Costa Balenae in different activities: - participation in field research activities in the Pelagos Sanctuary - monitoring the presence and distribution of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) during dedicated surveys (10-12 per month) - environmental and ecological data collection regarding the species inhabiting the Ligurian Sea (cetaceans, fishes, seabirds ..) - transcription of data collected at sea, database updating - photo-identification and matching of bottlenose dolphin photos - opportunistic surveys - land-based surveys - lessons and training about cetacean ecology, biology and the most important research techniques used The internship is a great opportunity for anyone keen to start a career in cetacean research or simply willing to acquire fieldwork and data processing skills. This experience will give you the chance to work in the Pelagos Sanctuary and enjoy its unique marine biodiversity as well as traveling and exploring the beautiful Liguria region. Thanks to this internship you will support cetacean research and conservation in one of the most crowded and busy areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Fieldwork will be made in coastal waters (Western Ligurian Sea). Surveys will be conducted onboard dedicated vessels (5-6 m inflatable boat) around 10 times per month. Training will focus on collecting photo for photo-ID purposes, environmental, geographical (GPS) and dolphins' behavioural data. During fieldwork, participants will gain first-hand experience in collecting data on cetaceans, seabirds and other marine fauna. Interns will improve their skills on cetaceans boat-based surveys as well as on the use of the photo-ID technique. Surveys are weather dependent and they can change during the period. Interns will be busy 5 days a week, 6-8 hours/day (depending on fieldwork or labwork). During their free time, interns will have the opportunity to experience all sorts of activities: swimming, diving, hiking, exploring historical sites, visit museums, sailing. Skills/qualification: · Minimum age of 18 · Prior experience in cetaceans or boat-based surveys is preferred but not required, · Degree or on-going studies in biology, natural science, veterinary or similar (preferred) · Strong motivation and interest in cetaceans and research · Speak, read and write in fluent English · Be adaptable as fieldwork is weather dependent · Be prepared to spend many hours on a small zodiac (5-6 m) and under the sun or in harsh conditions . Announcing Workshop on Sanctuary-based Research at the World Marine Mammal Conference

Innovative Research at Seaside Sanctuaries for Belugas and Orcas Lori Marino and Naomi Rose This workshop will explore the questions and opportunities associated with research in a seaside sanctuary for cold-water species, including beluga whales and orcas. Authentic sanctuaries are places where priority is given to the autonomy and wellbeing of the residents. Yet ongoing data collection and publication on the residents' psychology, physiology and behavior is critical to understanding how they are adapting to the sanctuary environment. The challenge of developing non-invasive and minimally intrusive ways of collecting data can also potentially drive innovative cetacean research and health care in sanctuaries, in marine theme parks, and in free-ranging situations. Presenters will discuss how existing data collection methodologies can be adapted to and refined in a sanctuary environment, as well as how the specific limits of a sanctuary's mission can be used as an opportunity to create new data collection methodologies that can then be applied to health care and conservation outside the sanctuary. In this way the sanctuary becomes a crucial center for innovation and application in cetacean research, playing a unique role in our ability to humanely care for and protect captive and free-ranging belugas and orcas around the world. The principle goal of the workshop will be the generation of a preliminary list of research questions and an outline of possible methodologies to address these questions. New publication: Behavioural responses of humpback whales to vessel and swimming tourism activities

PLoS ONE 14(7): e0219364. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0219364 ABSTRACT: Vava'u, Kingdom of Tonga, is a well-established whale-watching destination in the South Pacific. Between July and October, the waters around the archipelago represent one of the most important breeding grounds for Oceania humpback whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*). The Tongan government allows tourist swimming activities with whales and tour operators strongly promote the practice of swimming-with-whales, focusing primarily on mother-calf pairs. However, there is increasing evidence, derived from empirical research on swim-with-cetacean tourism, that this kind of interaction affects cetacean behaviour and can lead to negative effects on the cetaceans involved. This study represents the first assessment of humpback whales' behavioural responses to vessel and swimmer approaches in Vava'u. Fifty-six surveys took place during the 2016 and 2017 whale breeding seasons aboard dedicated research and tour vessels. Whale dive time, number of reorientation events, and respiration rates were documented in both the absence and presence of boats and swimmers. Vessel approach type, swimmer placement, and whale avoidance responses were also recorded. Results indicate that the average diving time and the proportion of time spent diving in the presence of swimming activities increased significantly for mother-calf pairs (F 2,36 = 18.183, P < 0.001; F 2,36 = 5.462, P = 0.009, respectively). Moreover, avoidance responses of whales towards tour vessels were observed for one third of vessel approaches (33.5%) and the avoidance rate was significantly affected by the boat approach type (95% CI: 20.7-69.2%, z = 3.50, P < 0.001). Finally, low levels of compliance to the existing Tongan swim-with-whales regulations were documented, in particular the stipulated whale resting time between interactions with tour operator vessels and swimmers was often not respected (38.4%). Vava'u is an important calving ground for the Oceania humpback whale population and these findings should be carefully considered by stakeholders in Tonga and at other locations where swim-with-whales opportunities are being undertaken. Effective strategies to reduce the risk of detrimental effects on the whales targeted by swimming activities, especially mother-calf pairs, are needed. Memory for own behaviour in pinnipeds

Memory for own behaviour in pinnipeds. Animal cognition, pp.1-12. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10071-019-01286-x ABSTRACT Pinnipeds are aquatic predators feeding on a vast range of prey, and their social behaviour differs greatly between species (from extreme polygyny in some sea lions to monogamy in some true seals). It has been hypothesised that the foraging and social complexity of their lifestyle should drive the evolution of their cognitive abilities. To investigate how aware pinnipeds are of their own behaviour, a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus), two harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and four South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) were trained to repeat their own behaviour on command. Three already trained behaviours were used, and the animal was asked to repeat the behaviour twice to ensure that the animal recalled its own behaviour and not the command given for the previous behaviour. All three species could recall their own behaviour significantly better than by chance. The duration for which the animals could recall their behaviour was tested using a staircase paradigm. A delay was implemented between the completion of the behaviour and the command to repeat it. The delay was increased after correct responses and decreased after incorrect responses. The performance of all species fell towards chance level after 12–18 s, with no significant difference between species. These results indicate that sea lions and true seals are aware of their own behaviour and that true seals have similar short-term memory abilities. It also shows that pinnipeds have less developed short-term memory abilities compared to other aquatic predators, such as the bottlenose dolphin. The complexity of pinniped foraging and social behaviour does not seem to have driven the evolution of short-term memory abilities in these animals but might have contributed to their ability to recall their own behaviour. Sensory Ecology Workshop at the World Marine Mammal Conference

Greetings Marine Mammal Community, We are pleased to announce a full-day Workshop on the Sensory Ecology of Marine Mammals. *When and Where* Sunday, December 8, 2019 0830 – 1730 World Marine Mammal Science Conference, Barcelona *Who should attend* We invite researchers and students whose work includes sensory systems, communication, cognition, evolution, behavior and conservation. All participants will be invited to present a brief introduction, and engage in round-table discussions in their chosen areas of interest. *Sensory Ecology Workshop Summary* The life history of marine mammals is predicated on detection of aquatically-transmitted information. Their specialized sensory organs are tuned to receive stimuli enabling diverse strategies for communication, foraging, mating, swimming, and navigating various marine habitats and conditions. This full-day workshop begins with talks and panels presenting recent discoveries in marine mammal vision, audition, chemoreception and somatosensation. Attendees will select two afternoon workgroups focusing on 1) the comparative anatomical adaptations and mechanisms of one sensory modality, and 2) the ecological significance of sensory integration in marine mammals. Other objectives of the workshop are to foster interdisciplinary research partnerships and identify important knowledge gaps, particularly conservation-related applications. ACCOBAMS Course for Highly Qualified Marine Mammals Observers (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring operators (PAM)

Oceanomare Delphis Onlus (ODO) and Centro Interdisciplinare di Bioacustica e Ricerche Ambientali (CIBRA) under the agreement signed with ACCOBAMS (Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area) will be running a new training course to qualify individuals as Marine Mammal Observers and operators of Passive Acoustic Monitoring systems. When: 23rd to 28th September 2019 Where: Island of Ischia (Italy) Participation fee: 1000 Euro The Qualification: The ACCOBAMS qualification qualifies people to work as MMOs/PAM operators throughout the Mediterranean and the Black Sea in 24 countries, where it is the agreed course requirement for such work. After the course, The ACCOBAMS highly qualified MMO/PAM operators will be able to work to minimize the impact of noise on cetaceans, by applying the knowledge, expertise and skills acquired during the training course, and to use the standard procedures, forms and manuals, in accordance with the ACCOBAMS principles. Speakers and Presenters: Dr. Carlotta Vivaldi, Dr.Barbara Mussi, Dr. Claudio Fossati, Dr. Giovanni Caltavuturo, Dr. Gianni Pavan. Requirements: Graduated/current student in biology or ecology or have experience that demonstrates a commitment to the environment and its conservation. - Minimum 30 days-at-sea as a marine observer (with references/records ) - Ability to recognize the different species and understand the behaviour of animals at sea - Ability to communicate in English - Have a theoretical understanding of acoustic issues - Ability to recognise the different vocalizations of marine mammals Topics Covered in the Training Course: - Introduction to underwater acoustics - Introduction to marine mammals and acoustics - Introduction to human activities generating underwater noise and impacts on marine mammals - Introduction to existing regulations, mitigation procedures and ACCOBAMS Guidelines - Introduction to the role of MMO/PAM-Introduction to the lifestyle onboard - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the acoustic and visual sightings. - Using PAM for survey and research - Introduction to the hardware used for PAM - Hands-on training with PAMGUARD-Tips and troubleshooting.
