Greetings Marine Mammal Community, We are pleased to announce a full-day Workshop on the Sensory Ecology of Marine Mammals. *When and Where* Sunday, December 8, 2019 0830 – 1730 World Marine Mammal Science Conference, Barcelona *Who should attend* We invite researchers and students whose work includes sensory systems, communication, cognition, evolution, behavior and conservation. All participants will be invited to present a brief introduction, and engage in round-table discussions in their chosen areas of interest. *Sensory Ecology Workshop Summary* The life history of marine mammals is predicated on detection of aquatically-transmitted information. Their specialized sensory organs are tuned to receive stimuli enabling diverse strategies for communication, foraging, mating, swimming, and navigating various marine habitats and conditions. This full-day workshop begins with talks and panels presenting recent discoveries in marine mammal vision, audition, chemoreception and somatosensation. Attendees will select two afternoon workgroups focusing on 1) the comparative anatomical adaptations and mechanisms of one sensory modality, and 2) the ecological significance of sensory integration in marine mammals. Other objectives of the workshop are to foster interdisciplinary research partnerships and identify important knowledge gaps, particularly conservation-related applications.
