The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre (CBMWC) <https://www.welshwildlife.org/visitor-centres/cardigan-bay-marine-wildlife- centre/> is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to join our Living Seas Team and to help with our marine mammal research and awareness raising work. The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre is the Living Seas wing of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. Since 1996 we have been dedicated to raising awareness of the local marine environment through research and education. Using land and boat based surveys, photo-identification and acoustic studies we collect data on marine megafauna, focusing on bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoises and Atlantic grey seals in the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the wider Irish Sea. We operate a busy visitor centre and also provide marine educational activities for families, school and groups. Volunteering with CBMWC is a unique opportunity for you to carry out marine mammal research and to help inspire the public through our visitor centre and community engagement events. You'll learn about the marine species of Cardigan Bay and gain experience in field work, processing data, environmental education, community engagement and much more! New paper on Resident killer whale habitat use off Vancouver Island using PAM

These populations are listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act (SARA) as 'endangered' and 'threatened', respectively. Relatively little is known about their habitat use outside of the sheltered waters along the east coast of Vancouver Island, especially during the winter. SARA requires the identification of critical habitat for these populations. High densities of Chinook salmon-their primary prey-are found around Swiftsure Bank, an area identified as potential critical habitat for Southern Residents. However, it is a difficult area to survey for whales using conventional small-boat approaches. Here, we used 2 yr of data collected from an autonomous acoustic recorder deployed at Swiftsure Bank from 2009-2011 to assess the year-round habitat use of this area by Resident killer whales. Overall, Resident killer whales were detected on 244 of 680 monitored days (36%). Southern Residents were heard in all months, with activity peaking during the summer. Northern Residents were also heard throughout the year, but were mostly detected in the spring and fall, which indicates the 2 populations may differ in their strategies for using this common foraging area. High levels of use by both of these populations highlights the importance of Swiftsure Bank to both, supporting the expansion of Resident killer whale critical habitat to include this site. Estimating the isotopic niche of males and females of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) from Magellan Strait, Chile (Daniela Haro)

Estimating the isotopic niche of males and females of false killer whales (*Pseudorca crassidens*) from Magellan Strait, Chile. To understand the trophic habits of both sexes better, this study aims to assess and compare the isotopic niche of adult male and adult female false killer whales over different time scales, using carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios in bone collagen and skin from two independent stranding events. 2. The events occurred in nearby areas, in the eastern zone of the Magellan Strait, Chile. Bone samples were obtained from 34 adults from the first stranding (1989) and skin samples were obtained from 15 adult specimens from the second stranding (2013). Isotopes values from both bone collagen and skin samples were examined from males and females. The isotopic niche was estimated by Bayesian Ellipse Analysis based on δ13C and δ15N values. Layman metrics were calculated to complement the evaluation of the isotopic niche. 3. In multivariate tests, no significant differences were found between sexes for the isotope values of δ13C or δ15N of bone collagen (MANOVA, Wilks λ = 0.92, P = 0.26), and δ13C and δ15N from skin (MANOVA, Wilks λ = 0.63, P = 0.06). However, in the univariate analysis, the δ15N values were significantly higher in the skin of females (W = 8, P = 0.02). Male individuals stranded in 1989 had a larger isotopic niche area than females (Pr(M|D) = 0.93). Likewise, males had higher values than females in all estimated Layman metrics. By contrast, skin samples showed that female individuals had a larger isotopic niche area than males (Pr(M|D) = 0.85). In this stranded group, females had higher values than males for all Layman metrics. 4. Our results from isotopic niche metrics constructed from bone collagen revealed that male false killer whales had a wider isotopic niche and major degree of individual specialization than females. In addition, results from skin suggest that females were feeding on higher trophic level prey than males over a short temporal scale (days/months). This result could be related to their lactation period. Lactating females have an increased energy requirement to provide good quality milk to their offspring, which would lead to the consumption of prey with higher energy value (e.g., fish), and with different values of δ13C and δ15N. Dear Colleagues, Seiche Training will be delivering their Protected Species Observer (PSO) course, Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Level 2 (PAM L2) course at: -Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, Louisiana, US * PSO -October 30-31, PAM-November 1-3. -Rio de Janeiro, Brazil * PSO - November 7-8, PAM-November 9-11, PAM L2-November 12-14. -Boston * PAM L2, November 25-27 This PSO training BOEM (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) compliant to provide Protected Species Observer certification for seismic surveys and is accepted in various other industries and regions where mitigation for marine mammals is needed. PSO's monitor for marine mammals and sea turtles and advise on the measures required to reduce impacts to the animals worldwide. The PSO course looks at Noise in the ocean, the regulations for minimising risks to marine mammals during industrial activities, Types of dredging, marine mammal identification and documenting animal behaviour, data collection and report writing. The PAM course includes an introduction into sound in water, looking at how sound propagates underwater, marine mammal vocalisations, using PAMGuard, with hands on practical sessions and hardware set up, installing and deploying the equipment on a vessel, as the PAM course will include a boat trip to provide experience in locating and identifying protected species at sea, as well as practice in methods for distance estimation. The PAM Level 2 course builds on Seiche's PAM Level 1 course where delegates will have experience working in the field and would have completed PAM training. The course will look at troubleshooting hardware and software, drawing on Seiche's extensive experience of in-field support. It moves on to explore advanced PAMGuard configuration and settings for identifying marine mammal species. The course will finish with practical sessions on analysing acoustic for the presence of marine mammals and for localising detections using various software programmes, such as PAMGuard viewer and mix mode and Raven Lite. JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH MARINE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALISTS Marine Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization providing rescue response as far north as the Pacific Palisades, south to Long Beach, and as far west as Catalina Island. MAR conducts hundreds of marine mammal rescues annually. Rescued animals consist primarily of sea lions, seals, and seabirds with occasional dolphins and sea turtles. MAR has rescued 6,000 marine mammals over the past 30 years. MAR also works as a member of the large whale disentanglement network. You must have pinniped rescue experience to apply for this position. POSITION: MARINE ANIMAL RESCUE SPECIALIST MAR is looking for committed individuals who would like to make rescuing marine animals a career. You must have pinniped, especially sea lion rescue experience to apply. Training will be provided by MAR to ensure continued high-level response to any marine animal calls. MAR will not consider candidates looking for a temporary position. Only long-term applicants will be considered. JOB DESCRIPTION: Must be available 5 days a week, 8 hours per day for response, rescue and transportation from jetties, docks, and both common and uncommon stranding locations. Must be able to learn the proper use of specialized marine animal rescue, transportation and safety equipment. Must be able to work in cooperation with local agencies and volunteers and be familiar with all local, state and federal laws pertaining to the rescuing of marine animals. While the concept is well established in a broad range of species, studies with free-ranging pinnipeds remain rare. Here we use a long-studied but declining population of Galápagos sea lions to demonstrate the existence of behavioural axes related to boldness in pups with respect to intrinsic and maternal traits. These sea lions reside in a habitat characterized by unpredictable environmental perturbations, which may select for differences in personality between individuals. We tested individual pups during two reproductive seasons (2017 and 2018) and elicited diverse yet repeatable responses to a novel object, which were associated with sex and age but not body mass differences. Responses to novel object and human approach tests were positively associated: pups that approached a novel object were also more likely to stay near humans. Maternal age and body size also affected variation in pups’ responses, suggesting that fitness-relevant characteristics of mothers may influence pup personality. To determine how traits changed across time and contexts, we repeated the novel object test 1 year later in pups born in 2017 and with their mother present during both years. These traits remained repeatable and stable within the first year of life; however, shy pups showed plasticity by increasing their tendency to approach when with mothers, potentially due to maternal social support. We propose that personality in this species is likely to be relevant for coping strategies during later life history events within a changing environment.

Greetings- We would like to announce the *Ninth International Sirenian Symposium,* which will be held in conjunction with the World Marine Mammal Conference in Barcelona, Spain. *Workshop Details:* Date: Sunday, December 8, 2019 Time: 08:30 to 17:30 Cost: $35 USD before October 1, 2019, $110 after October 1, 2019 *Workshop Information:* The purpose of the Ninth International Sirenian Symposium is to support and promote Sirenian conservation. Scientists from around the globe are encouraged to present *new science and address how their work contributes to the global conservation of the Sirenians and supports regional initiatives or pressing management challenges*. Topics can include human interactions, physiology, monitoring applications, modeling, genetics, captive care and rehabilitation, management, general biology, stranding response and education and outreach. The symposium will include presentations, a poster session, and a panel discussion on current topics surrounding Sirenian conservation and management.
