Hi Folks, We are seeking two highly qualified candidates for post doctoral fellowships to work on a large collaborative project focused on underwater noise disturbance to bowhead whales (*Balaena mysticetus*) in the Canadian Arctic. The candidates would work closely with Dr. Stephen Insley and Dr. William Halliday with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada ( www.arcticnoise.ca) and Dr. Francis Juanes at the University of Victoria ( www.juaneslab.weebly.com) and would be based in the Department of Biology at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. These fellowships will focus on three main tasks: 1) bioacoustic analyses of large passive acoustic monitoring datasets to examine spatial and temporal trends in the presence of bowhead whales and other marine animals, as well as documenting underwater noise from ships; 2) examining the reaction of bowhead whales to ships and underwater noise from ships using satellite telemetry data and possibly acoustic tags; 3) examining the current noise exposure to bowhead whales by combining acoustic propagation modeling with ship tracking data, and then examining mitigation strategies for reducing noise exposure to bowhead whales. Hello MARMAM list, The Ocean Wise Conservation Association (formerly the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre) is hiring a Coordinator for its newly established Southern Vancouver Island Cetacean Research Initiative (SVICRI), located in Victoria, British Columbia (Canada). The SVICRI is a conservation and research program of the Coastal Ocean Research Institute (CORI), which is a core initiative of the Ocean Wise Conservation Association. The SVICRI's mandate includes increasing scientific understanding of cetaceans in Southern BC and conducting specific cetacean conservation projects informed by the latest science. The SVICRI is currently focused on activities contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale population. One of its principal activities is assisting with the implementation and evaluation of the WhaleReport Alert System (WRAS), a tool that informs shipmasters of cetacean sighting locations in real time to reduce the risk of ship strike and disturbance. SVICRI activities also include cetacean research projects, community education and outreach, and other science-based marine conservation projects. The SVICRI Coordinator is a member of CORI's Marine Mammal Research Program and works in collaboration and close communication with other Marine Mammal Research Program and CORI staff, including the SVICRI Program Manager. She/he will assist with all aspects of the program including work related to the BC Cetacean Sightings Network (BCCSN), WRAS program expansion, cetacean research projects, science and general program communications, promoting stewardship actions among boaters and the larger maritime community, and administrative duties including but not limited to grant writing and reporting to funders. Humpback whale research Jervis Bay, NSW - Seeking Research Volunteers

Dear all, We are seeking research volunteers for humpback whale research in Jervis Bay, NSW. The research project aims to investigate the habitat usage patterns of mother-calf humpback whale groups in a proposed resting ground during their southern migration, as well as the use of UAVs (drones) in detecting whales. The study will be undertaken in Jervis Bay, approximately 3 hours south of Sydney, from September 28th to November 9th, 2019.  Volunteers must be available for the full duration of the study period. Full-time volunteers are required to participate in land- and boat-based surveys of humpback whales. Land-based theodolite surveys will be undertaken from the lighthouse at Point Perpendicular Jervis Bay, to record the abundance, behaviour and distribution of whales in the Bay. Participants will spend approximately 6 hours per day surveying (in two shifts; weather dependent). Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in data-collection surveys on board vessels in Jervis Bay. Candidates need to be sociable and outgoing, as they will be expected to work and live as part of a team, with shared cooking and cleaning duties, living fairly isolated on the grounds of the lighthouse. Volunteers must organise and pay for their own transport to Sydney (where a car will be travelling to Jervis Bay), accommodation will be provided.  A small contribution of $50/week will be required to cover food expenses. This project will suit people with a background in science (including recent graduates and graduate students as well as higher level undergraduate students) keen to gain experience in cetacean survey techniques. Applicants should also be highly motivated and able to concentrate for several hours at a time. Those with previous survey experience, particularly with marine mammals, will be preferred. BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN - ATLANTIC SPOTTED DOLPHIN PROJECT RESEARCH IN VENEZUELA. INTERNS AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAM 2019. Laboratory of Ecosystems and Global Change (LEGC-IVIC) and Provita. BACKGROUND: The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Global Change (LEGC) of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC, www.ivic.gob.ve) invites the first season of internships-volunteering (2019) in the study of coastal dolphins. LEGC is a scientific team that among its research lines on the fauna of coastal and riparian ecosystems, it has established the first one on aquatic mammals in Venezuela. On the other hand, Provita is an important NGO that contributes to the research and conservation in Venezuela. This research will begin with a project focused on sociobiology (social structure, social networks and bioacoustics) of resident groups of the coastal bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in the central coast of Venezuela. This, after an experience of 5 years in that locality studying ecological aspects of T. truncatus *(https://doi.org/10.1007/s13364-018-0401-1). The coast of Aragua not only houses these species, but also the Bryde's whale (*Balaenoptera edeni*), the common dolphin (Delphinus sp.) and the spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris). Of which basic information is collected too. LEGC interns and volunteers are young, hard-working who are willing to contribute to research by learning as they experience fieldwork in teams, field techniques for collecting and processing data and methodologies. All team members and interns share academic space, housing in the Institute, housework in the study area, knowledge and experience in a friendly and multicultural environment. The internship consists of three weeks: The first week of theoretical-practical preparation (24 theoretical hours and 16 practicals hours) at the IVIC Ecology Center ( www.ivic.gob.ve/es/investigacion-3/centros-31/ecologia-316) The second week of seven field surveys for data collection (42 h) on the Cata Bay (Aragua state) and the third week for data storage and analysis at the IVIC Ecology Center (40 h). The volunteering consist of the second and third weeks. WHERE: Theory: LEGC, Center of Ecology (IVIC) Miranda State, Caracas (10 23 N - 66 58 W). Practice: Cata Bay, western coast of the (rain forest) National Park Henry Pittier, Aragua state (central coast of Venezuela) 150 km from Caracas (DC) (10 29 N - 67 44 W). PROGRAM: Interns (Three weeks), Volunteers (Two weeks). 1st WEEK (LEGC-Ecology Center, 40 hours. For Interns). - Monday: What is a cetacean? The cetaceans and the human in history. Origin, evolution and diversity. Adaptations for aquatic life: Anatomy and Physiology. Life histories. Biogeography Distribution. Ecology Behavior. Conservation. - Tuesday: Identification of species reported for Venezuela. Basic logistics for the study of cetaceans on the mainland, sea and air. Basic equipment to collect information. - Wednesday: How to detect cetaceans and record an effective sighting? Basic data to collect during a sighting, calibration and use of GPS. Configuration and use of the SLR cameras. Download of sightings (GIS). Download pictures and selection (software). - Thursday: Daily encounter ratio. Photo-identification as a tool for ecological and behavioral studies. Estimates of abundance. Local distribution and areas of action. - Friday: Residential patterns. Behavior (deployments, states, daily budget). Habitat use. Social structure and social networks. Bioacoustics. Saturday: Break. Sunday: Transfer to the Cata Bay. 2nd WEEK (Cata Bay-Provita, 42 hours. For Interns and Volunteers). The field surveys will be carried out in a fishing vessel of 9 m in length by 2 of beam. The field work will depend on the climatic conditions, however, the Aragua coast offers few climatic inconveniences throughout the year. There will be 7 mornings of field surveys in the week, after each survey is lunch, rest and then proceed to download the data of sightings and then interpret them preliminarily and discuss them. In the field surveys, it will be implemented: - The identification and recognition of the elements of the marine landscape and the method of tracking and detection of cetaceans. - Ethical navigation mode to study cetaceans. - The basic data collection / sighting. - Use of GPS. - Use of SRL camera. - Counting of individuals and composition of a group. - Identification of the behavioral states that configure group behavior and its recording. - Use of hydrophone. In the afternoon the information of the sightings will be downloaded: - Sighting forms. - Latitude and longitude. - Photographs and their selection. - Voice recordings (behavior). - Recordings of vocalizations. 3rd WEEK (LEGC-Ecology Center, 40 hours. For Interns and volunteers). PRACTICAL FEES: Accomodation, food and transport (airport-IVIC-Cata Bay-IVIC-airport) are paid. The Outer Banks Centerfor Dolphin Research is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to theconservation of bottlenose dolphins in the Outer Banks, NC. Our program’s goalis to gain an understanding of the population dynamics, movement patterns, andbehavioral ecology of coastal bottlenose dolphins in the sounds and coastalwaters near the Outer Banks. The OBXCDR conducts a photo-identificationmonitoring study of bottlenose dolphins in Roanoke, Croatan, Albemarle, Pamlicoand Currituck Sounds. Data is collected via dedicated small boat surveys aswell as opportunistically from a local dolphin watch. This study is acontinuation of the long-term study initiated by the Nags Head Dolphin Watch in1997. Information from the long-term monitoring study will provide a basis forstudies involving population trends, habitat utilization, social associations,and ecology of the dolphins as well as aid in efforts to examine bottlenosedolphin stock structure and movement patterns along the U.S. Atlantic coast.Interns will gain experience in field data collection, photo-identification ofdolphins, and environmental education. *Research Associate II—Marine Mammal Acoustic Technician * The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for a Research Associate II position in Marine Biology and Fisheries. We seek a research associate to join our group and work as a marine mammal acoustic technician in the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center’s Protected Resources and Biodiversity Division in Miami, FL. Research in the marine mammal laboratory at SEFSC is focused on assessing the distribution, seasonal density, and abundance of marine mammal stocks in the Gulf of Mexico, southeastern US waters of the North Atlantic, and the Caribbean. The incumbent shall primarily assist in managing acoustic data collected during field operations including ship-based acoustic surveys and long-term acoustic moorings, real-time and post-processing of acoustic data including detecting, classifying, and localizing marine mammal vocalizations, develop abundance estimates for deep diving marine mammal species, and participate in acoustic data collection during ship-based stock assessment surveys. The researcher may spend extended periods of time at sea on large vessels collecting passive acoustic data from towed arrays and sonobuoys, including leading the acoustic surveys, ensuring quality control of data and metadata, and maintaining equipment. These efforts shall focus on data collection and analysis associated with the Atlantic Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species (AMAPPS) and Gulf of Mexico Marine Assessment Program for Protected Species (GoMMAPPS) ship-based surveys. The incumbent will utilize a solid foundation in passive acoustic data collection and analysis techniques. Beneficial experience can include work in noise estimation, acoustic filtering, environmental data analyses, and habitat modeling. Familiarity with large data sets is essential. Irrawaddy Dolphin Research Internship – Coastal Cambodia Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is an NGO based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. The organisation has many facets, including working to stop illegal fishing practices, ecological and social science research and collecting data to use in the implementation of conservation legislation. In September 2017, MCC introduced *The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project,* in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. The project's primary aim is to collect data on abundance, distribution and residency to delineate and protect critical habitats for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. We are looking for those who will commit to early mornings and late nights, with a keen interest in marine mammals and their conservation. Ideally, we are looking for university students or recent graduates. *Project site description:* The project is based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, a 40-minute boat trip from Kep Town, Cambodia. The island is inhabited only by MCC, a team made up of a mixture of interdisciplinary international and local staff. The accommodation and facilities on the island are basic but well-maintained. You will be in shared and catered accommodation with fellow interns and staff members. All project related resources are provided. *Application process and fees:* There is an internship fee associated with this internship, covering: · all food, water, accommodation; · transport to and from the mainland to the project island; · dolphin research training; · scuba diving (if qualified); · and the opportunity to get involved in activities and training at MCC, such as seahorse research or artificial reef management. Hello All, An announcement for a* Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) Coordinator for RESTORE *has been posted*.* This position will facilitate strategic partnerships and focus on collaboration among restoration efforts in the Gulf of Mexico and support planning, collaboration, environmental compliance coordination from the RESTORE Council's Comprehensive Plan. It will integrate measures to avoid and minimize impacts to bottlenose dolphins and other marine mammals and their habitats and integrate MMPA conservation actions into early project planning. This position will serve as a representative on MMPA issues in order to promote and communicate the importance of marine mammals, the MMPA process, best management practices, and mitigation.
