Postdoctoral Fellowship - Biodiversity NPI is seeking a Postdoctoral fellow (1.5 yr term + possible 1 year extension, pending funding) to work within the Biodiversity Programme on fine-scale dietary analyses of pygoscelid penguins and seals in the sub Antarctic in relation to krill fishing (and climate change). The sample collections (in-hand) are from the South Orkneys Islands in the western South Atlantic (2013/14). Samples from Bouvetøya in the easternSouth Atlantic will be collected this coming austral summer (2014/15). It is expected that sampling will also be done in the planned extension period ofthis programme in both locations during 2015/16. This diet study will be part of a larger effort that involves tracking data, accelerometer-magnetometer records, habitat utilization and relationships between predators and krill-fishing effort. The successful candidate will be integrated into project elements beyond purely dietary assessments, dependent on the skill set(s) that he/she brings to the programme. Qualifications We are seeking a candidate who has a solid background in biology with direct research experience dealing with predator dietary analyses (FAs, isotopes, qPCR, scat analyses etc.). The candidate must have good skills in Excel, Access, R programming and multivariate statistics. Education level must include a PhD in animal ecology. Research experience dealing with marine predator diving andspatial data and a good publication record (according to career stage) willalso be viewed very positively. Salary The salary will follow the Norwegian State salary code 1352 (Postdoctoral Fellows), scale 57-64, depending on qualifications (468,400 – 533,000 nok; 77,150 – 87,800 US dollars). General The position is a 1.5 year term (with a possible 1 year extension pending funding). The work place is NPI, Tromsø, Norway. Introduction: The CDF operates the CDRS in the Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The candidate will work closely with the Galapagos National Park and other governmental agencies to plan and execute relevant scientific studies and conservation measures. RESEARCH ASSISTANT University of Maryland The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) (http://www.umces.edu/cbl) is accepting applications for a full-time Faculty Research Assistant to assist with a passive acoustic monitoring study for marine mammals off Maryland. Duties will include: - Preparation and maintenance of acoustic equipment - Deployment and recovery of equipment at sea - Processing and analysis of acoustic data The project will involve the use of an acoustic device called the C-POD. Experience with these devices, or the earlier version T-POD, will be preferable. Applicants should be familiar with Excel. Experience with sound analysis software, such as Raven, statistical software packages, such as R, and GIS data analysis is also desirable. South Australia’s marine areas boast iconic species such as the southern right whale, bottlenose dolphin, leafy sea dragon, great white shark, Australian pelican, little penguin, Australian sea lion, New Zealand fur seal and giant cuttlefish. Southern right whales gather in the Encounter and Far West Coast Marine Parks, areas that are recognised as being internationally-significant breeding sites. These areas provide for undisturbed calving for southern right whales, as well as protection of Australian sea-lion feeding grounds. New Zealand fur seals and Australian sea lions are only now starting to recover after the species was nearly wiped out by commercial sealing in the 19th century. Sea lions and fur seals make extensive use of our Marine Parks, and are seen on many South Australian beaches, with breeding colonies on Kangaroo Island and other off-shore islands. Data on marine mammal breeding and feeding distributions underpinned the zoning of many of South Australia’s Marine Parks. As a result, information on their breeding and feeding biology will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of our Marine Parks. The Senior Scientific Officer manages a small team of professionals to review existing and proposed environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting programs and contributes to the development of environmental reporting for the State. The Senior Scientific Officer undertakes and manages applied research, and consults with a broad range of staff from Natural Resource Management Boards, Non-Government Organisations, Universities and other natural resource management agencies. Entanglements have been implicated in preventing the recovery of some large whale populations. Acoustic deterrents on fishing nets are widely used to reduce incidental captures of dolphins and porpoises, but there is little evidence as to whether they effectively deter large whales. We tested whether a low-frequency whale alarm (3 kHz Whale Pinger®, 135 ± 5 db, 5 s emission interval and 400 ms emission duration) deterred Southern Hemisphere humpback whales *Megaptera novaeangliae* from approaching a potential source of entanglement. Northerly migrating humpback whale pods were tracked by an observer blind to alarm status (on/off) as they passed an alarm moored in the centre of the peak migration path. Of 137 pods tracked, 82 (60%) passed within the assumed detectable range (500 m) of the alarm, 51/78 (65%) when it was on and 31/59 (52%) when it was off (p = 0.18). There was no discernible response to the alarm. Whale pods did not differ in directionality, course heading or dive duration when within detectable range of the alarm, whether it was on or off, and a number of pods passed directly over the alarm while it was operational. This suggests that single alarms as currently configured and attached to a trap or pot line are unlikely to effectively deter humpback whales from approaching potential hazards, at least during their northerly migration phase.
