The Southeast manatee field station is currently seeking candidates for a Fall 2014 internship! Application deadline is Monday, August 18th. Interns will assist with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in South Florida. Minimum of 3 month commitment. Looking for a fall intern with a start date around September 2nd, but start date will be flexible. Working hours are usually Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with some nights and weekends required. The position is located in Tequesta (east coast of Florida, just north of Palm Beach). The intern's duties include assisting with manatee rescue, carcass salvage and research in South Florida. Interns will assist with manatee and dolphin field necropsies as needed and conduct photo ID and radio tracking research as time permits. Interns will also complete mortality and rescue reports, perform equipment maintenance and assist with other office and public outreach work as needed. To perform the duties of the position, interns will operate trucks, trailers, and boats up to 22' in length. The intern is required to complete a project and present a 10-15 minute presentation at the end of their internship. Qualifications: Junior or senior college students and recent graduates are eligible. Applicants should have some research field experience; be able to drive large trucks; be computer literate; be comfortable speaking to the public; and be proficient in the use of digital cameras, telephoto lenses, and filters. Previous animal-handling experience is desirable. Ability to trailer flatbeds and boats, as well as operate watercraft up to 22' in length is desirable. Interns must possess a valid driver's license, be able to lift 50 pounds, and be able to swim. Applicants should understand that this internship will require them to be wet, dirty, and outdoors in all weather conditions. This position is unpaid and housing is not provided. 4 Internship positions for the Humpback Whale Project Puerto Rico, USA December 29, 2014 - May 01, 2015 Four full time internships are available for the winter of 2015 to assist in on-going research focusing on humpback whales wintering off Puerto Rico. *General description:* Research for this project includes seasonal occurrence patterns and social behaviors of humpback whales. You can anticipate a minimum of 1-3 days/week of vessel based data collection, 2-3days/week land based data collection (including theodolite), and 1-2 days/week at the field house analyzing data. Acoustic data will be analyzed during days when field excursions are not practical or possible. There may be opportunity for limited aerial survey experience. Days off are infrequent but we will find time to let interns do some sight-seeing! Interns can expect to gain a solid foundation in marine and coastal ecology, humpback whale ecology with a focus on behavioral ecology, and an excellent mastery of field equipment related to this project. Boat work includes data collection using hydrophones. *Commitment:* Interns must be available full time from December 29, 2014 until May 01, 2015. This is a low density area for humpbacks. The ability to maintain land based observations for hours (or even a full day) without seeing a whale requires commitment and patience. Vessel based data collection will be from a small boat and is dependent on a team that is able to work well in close quarters and is not prone to getting sea sick. Commitment and dedication should be applied to computer tasks as they can become monotonous. Day to day tasks will include posting updates to FaceBook, updating the MCERC website, and other tasks as needed. Some training will take place in December via meetings over the internet prior to arrival in Puerto Rico. Interns must be willing to dedicate effort from home, including reading publications and installing required software. *Responsibilities:* Interns are fully involved in this project! You will work with students to make our research team effective. You will be coached in teaching methods to facilitate mentoring students, and assist in surveying and data collection. Tasks include- demonstrating equipment and providing instruction to students, preparation and maintenance of equipment, leading and participating in round table discussions of peer reviewed publications, interacting with the public and peers, overseeing household chores and field house living expectations. You will be working on continually updating our humpback whale catalog, photo identification, fluke matching, and acoustic analysis. You will be taught to use bioacoustics software and databases. Neatness and attention to detail is essential. *Provisions & Accommodations: * You will be provided with a place to sleep at the field house, meals, training, required software, and transportation to all field sites from the research station at no cost. A stellar academic average is a plus, but is not a requirement and should not discourage interested people with less than perfect academic scores from applying. A strong desire to learn new skills, mentor other students, and promote a positive attitude towards stewardship is essential for candidates. Experience in boat operations and cetacean research is a plus. Second call volunteer/ internship opportunity in marine vertebrate monitoring in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, 10-20 October 2014

Dear all, We are looking for motivated volunteers/ students that are willing to engage in the Berau marine vertebrates program, which aims to protect a high diversity of marine vertebrates including cetaceans, turtles, whale sharks and manta rays in the Marine Park of Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan, Indonesia through a seven-day monitoring survey in the beautiful landscape of the Berau archipelago while being mostly based on the island of Maratua (day 1-7) but also three nights on Derawan Island (Day 8-10). Research objectives are determining relative abundance, core area mapping, and assessing seasonal species diversity and site fidelity. Through earlier surveys it was found that the highest relative abundance of ceteaceans was within 5km radius of islands or reefs, and therefore we also conduct coral reef monitoring at several locations by snorkling. This will be the second survey for 2014 using overseas volunteers. Dear colleagues We are pleased to announce a new article: Cheng-Hsiu Tsai and R. Ewan Fordyce 2014 Juvenile morphology in baleen whale phylogeny. Naturwissenschaften (online first) doi: 10.1007/s00114-014-1216-9 Abstract Phylogenetic reconstructions are sensitive to the influence of ontogeny on morphology. Here, we use foetal/ neonatal specimens of known species of living baleen whales (Cetacea: Mysticeti) to show how juvenile morphology of extant species affects phylogenetic placement of the species. In one clade (sei whale, Balaenopteridae), the juvenile is distant from the usual phylogenetic position of adults, but in the other clade (pygmy right whale, Cetotheriidae), the juvenile is close to the adult. Different heterochronic processes at work in the studied species have different influences on juvenile morphology and on phylogenetic placement. This study helps to understand the relationship between evolutionary processes and phylogenetic patterns in baleen whale evolution and, more in general, between phylogeny and ontogeny; likewise, this study provides a proxy how to interpret the phylogeny when fossils that are immature individuals are included. Juvenile individuals in the peramorphic acceleration clades would produce misleading phylogenies, whereas juvenile individuals in the paedomorphic neoteny clades should still provide reliable phylogenetic signals. We regularly hold training courses from our UK office in SW England details of which may be found on our website as well as pricing information. In response to demand from those who have attended the course, who have often had to travel large distances to be with us; we are looking to hold courses from our new property near Tampa (Wesley Chapel) Florida. At first we would offer the 1 and 2 day courses which are a pre-requisite for operating our PAM equipment in the field. At a later date we would operate the full 3 day course for those who wish to gain some field experience on a small boat. Dependent on demand we intend to offer the courses several times per year. The area where land and boat trips will be undertaken is the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a place well-known for the presence and high sighting frequency of bottlenose dolphins (the largest population in the UK), harbour porpoises and grey seals. These populations are protected in the SAC following the 1992 EU Species and Habitat Directive. The Sea Watch Foundation is the most experienced organisation in the UK for training observers and students interested in marine mammals, having run courses for over twenty years. It has provided training for staff from all three national statutory conservation agencies, the Environment Agency, CEFAS, Department of the Environment, Wildlife Trusts, Royal Navy, and MMOs working with the oil and gas industries. Most of the field guides on cetaceans on the market in UK have actually been written or had consultations from the Sea Watch Foundation. Thus we hope we can guarantee a very high level training course given by highly experienced staff. The lectures and videos will focus on general biology and classification of cetaceans, species identification, conservation issues facing UK cetaceans, and recommended monitoring survey methods. The course will be based at New Quay, Ceredigion, West Wales, where our Welsh office is based, and will provide an unparalleled opportunity to see marine mammals in the wild and to contribute to cetacean conservation in Britain. The practical element of the course will combine both land and boat-based surveys allowing participants to directly learn how to conduct systematic watches and fill in standardised recording forms. Volunteer Internship Announcement: Point Blue Conservation Science Winter Farallon Program 2014-2015

Overview Point Blue Conservation Science (formerly PRBO Conservation Science and Point Reyes Bird Observatory) of Petaluma, CA is seeking applications for 3-4 volunteer research assistants for our Farallon Islands Program. Point Blue is an independent, scientific research non-profit whose mission is to conserve birds, other wildlife and ecosystems through innovative scientific research, partnership and outreach. Under co-operative agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Point Blue has conducted continuous research and stewardship of the unique natural resources of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge since 1968. The Farallon Islands are just a few miles from the continental shelf and lie in the rich coastal upwelling region of Central California. The islands host globally significant breeding seabird populations (over 300,000 individuals of 13 species), are a major haul out and breeding site for 5 species of pinnipeds, and a key feeding site for White Sharks. The islands also host a variety of migrant land birds and an endemic salamander and cricket population. Point Blue is seeking volunteers to assist with its winter activities on the Farallones. Research during this period focuses primarily on breeding elephant seals, but there are a variety of other biological studies conducted. Accommodations are in restored lighthouse keeper's housing, with a fully equipped field station to accommodate year-round occupancy. On Island Work Duties The field season is early December to mid-March on Southeast Farallon Island, a rugged 120-acre island National Wildlife Refuge 30 miles offshore from San Francisco, California. Responsibilities include: continuing the long term demographic studies of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) which includes tag resighting of breeding animals (adult males and females), pelage dye marking of individuals, flipper tag application of animals and weaned pup restraint for tag application; conducting surveys for arboreal salamanders (Aneides lugubris farallonensis), Farallon camel cricket (Farallonophilus cavernicolus), birds, other pinnipeds and cetaceans (using new technology with an Apple iPad and custom made Spotter App). There is also opportunities to aid in burrowing owl surveys, removal of invasive plant species, Cassin Auklet breeding checks, Common Murre band resighting and assist with routine maintenance of island equipment. Interns will also aid in standardized data collection, entry, and proofing, and management of long term datasets (Access, Excel and other Microsoft programs, Photo-ID, paper filing). Applicants must be able to live and work effectively in a remote setting with a small crew under potentially difficult weather conditions for an extended field season (approximately 3 months without leaving the island). On island work is conducted 7 days a week throughout the entire field season, often for extended hours with no time off. Interns are expected to participate in cleaning and maintaining housing facilities as well as rotating cooking duties for dinner each evening (kitchen is equipped with full cooking utensils and food). Wildlife Research - Marine Mammals TITLE: OPS Biological Scientist I POSITION #: 77902156 LOCATION: Port Charlotte, FL RATE OF PAY: $11.00/hour, 40 hours/week DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES: Duties include but are not limited to recovery of manatee carcasses from a ten county area in Southwest Florida. Conduct necropsies on badly decomposed manatee carcasses and transport fresh to moderately decomposed manatee carcasses to the necropsy facility in St. Petersburg. Participate in the marine mammal stranding network, including coordination of capture and transportation of injured manatees and cetaceans to the appropriate rehabilitation facility. Conduct aerial surveys of manatees, track radio-tagged manatees and photograph manatees for photo identification purposes. Participate in aerial synoptic surveys for manatees. Operate a computer and software such as Arcview, Excel, Access and Word. Participate in data entry, office work and extensive public outreach including working with the media.
