Post Doc Opportunity - Right whale behavior and acoustics The Bioacoustics Research Group in the Department of Biology at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY (http://parkslab.syr.edu/) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our group to bring new ideas, approaches and analytical methods to the analysis of behavioral data collected from marine organisms. The work in the lab is focused on the ecological role of acoustic communication and the impacts of noise on communication. This position is specifically to support ongoing data collection and analysis of a long-term study of behavior of North Atlantic right whale mother-calf pairs off the East Coast of the United States. PhD in Animal Behavior, Biology, Ecology or similar field required. Candidates with strong analytical skills preferred. Three or more years experience in related animal behavior or bioacoustics research as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals preferred. We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in behavioral ecology and an interest in developing new analytical methods related to behavioral data and/or long-term acoustic recordings. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to work in three main areas in lab: 1. Aid in collection and analyses of behavioral and acoustic data from North Atlantic right whale mother-calf pairs. 2. Develop new methods to analyze and visualize data sets.  3. Contribute to publication of data in peer-reviewed journals. DOI 10.1007/s10646-014-1300-0 http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10646-014-1300-0?sa_campaign=emai… ABSTRACT Odontocetes (toothed whales) are considered sentinel species in the marine environment because of their high trophic position, long life spans, and blubber that accumulates lipophilic contaminants. Cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) is a biomarker of exposure and molecular effects of certain persistent organic pollutants. Immunohistochemistry was used to visualize CYP1A1 expression in blubber biopsies collected by non-lethal sampling methods from 10 species of free-ranging Hawaiian odontocetes: short-finned pilot whale, melon-headed whale, pygmy killer whale, common bottlenose dolphin, rough-toothed dolphin, pantropical spotted dolphin, Blainville’s beaked whale, Cuvier’s beaked whale, sperm whale, and endangered main Hawaiian Islands insular false killer whale. Significantly higher levels of CYP1A1 were observed in false killer whales and rough-toothed dolphins compared to melon-headed whales, and in general, trophic position appears to influence CYP1A1 expression patterns in particular species groups. No significant differences in CYP1A1 were found based on age class or sex across all samples. However, within male false killer whales, juveniles expressed significantly higher levels of CYP1A1 when compared to adults. Total polychlorinated biphenyl (∑PCBs) concentrations in 84 % of false killer whales exceeded proposed threshold levels for health effects, and ∑PCBs correlated with CYP1A1 expression. There was no significant relationship between PCB toxic equivalent quotient and CYP1A1 expression, suggesting that this response may be influenced by agonists other than the dioxin-like PCBs measured in this study. No significant differences were found for CYP1A1 expression among social clusters of false killer whales. This work provides a foundation for future health monitoring of the endangered stock of false killer whales and other Hawaiian odontocetes. Reprints available on request. Cheers, Kerry Foltz et al. A rare observation of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) with a whale shark (Rhincodon typus) off the Florida Panhandle, Gulf of Mexico. Aquatic Mammals 40(3):293-296. Summary: We report on a brief encounter between bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and a whale shark (Rhincodon typus) off the Florida Panhandle in the Gulf of Mexico. We also review non-predatory observations of cetaceans with whale sharks worldwide. The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI) conducts cetacean surveys throughout our field season (March - November) from aboard our research yacht Tyba along the north-western coast of Spain. More info about the BDRI here: www.thebdri.com We invite you to join our ongoing new study of the behaviour, communication, habitat use and social lives of bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises along the north-western coast of Spain (Galicia). Every year we welcome aboard enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to contribute directly to our research work. As a volunteer onboard Tyba, you will have the opportunity to see first hand the the incredible diversity of marine wildlife present in these waters. This project offers an insight in the work that our centre is carrying out, about dolphins research in general, you have the opportunity to work with interested people from all over the world, but most important of all – you will contribute to the dolphin conservation and research. The BDRI’s main work is to contribute to bottlenose dolphin conservation through research. Our research is published in scientific journals which is the basis for all the information that we have about bottlenose dolphins today. Hence, knowledge is directly connected to protection and conservation. To volunteer at the BDRI requires a minimum of 6 days commitment, and - weather permitting - we will be out on the water at least during 4-5 days per week. National Marine Life Center Internship Opportunities

The National Marine Life Center, a non-profit marine animal rehabilitation hospital in Buzzards Bay, MA is currently seeking internship applications for fall, winter, and spring interns. Duties- Animal Care Responsibilities- Depending on need/case load interns will assist with the care of the NMLC rehabilitation patients including seals, sea turtles, red bellied cooters, and diamondback terrapins. Animal care duties will include cleaning and disinfecting tanks, equipment, and environmental enrichment devices, food preparation, administering feeds, record keeping, kitchen maintenance, and water quality testing. Interns will also assist animal care staff during medical procedures, with admission exams, and at release events. Education Responsibilities -Interns will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, fairs, and festivals. Interns will assist in giving public presentations to guests and educate them on marine animals, conservation, and the NMLC. Interns will assist in our Marine Animal Discovery Center, assist with various office projects, create displays for the learning center, and help create lesson plans. Other Responsibilities - Each intern will take on a project which they will work on for the duration of their internship. The project must be proposed by the student and agreed upon with the NMLC staff. At the end of the internship the intern will present the project to the staff, volunteers, and members of the public. Each intern will also be assigned a weekly chore to assist with the upkeep of the facility and equipment. Requirements-The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an accredited college or university. Interns must be at least 18 years of age. Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working towards biology, environmental studies, marine science, education, or other related fields. Interns should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Students that are adaptable, responsible, hard-working, willing to learn, and have attention to detail are encouraged to apply. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Interns must be able to commit to at least three months; start and end dates are flexible due to school schedules. Interns must work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Benefits/Costs-Positions are unpaid, interns must have their own transportation, and housing is not provided. Alien Species Request

Dear Marmam-ers, I recently saw this request from a specialist in "Alien species" and thought that maybe a marine mammal specialist could help or forward the request to other researchers or newsletters that could help. "I am interested in cases where researchers or scientists were unknowing or accidental vectors of introduction for alien species, but I am having a difficult time locating evidence of such events. I am more interested in cases related to aquatic introduced species, but any and all examples would be helpful. I would greatly appreciate if anyone on the list-serve could provide me documents or accounts of this vector.
