Conserv. 87, 127005. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jnc.2025.127005 Abstract: For common dolphin (Delphinus delphis Linnaeus, 1758) and harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena Linnaeus, 1758), bycatch levels exceed the thresholds in the North-East Atlantic. Reverse drift modelling was developed to infer bycatch from stranding data. It is then necessary to define three parameters: the proportion of carcasses that float, the probability of a floating carcass drifting until stranding; and finally, the proportion of beached carcasses that are discovered and reported. The proportion of floating carcasses is the most influential corrective factor in the reverse drift modelling process. The objective of this study is to provide a better estimation of this proportion following bycatch in fishing gear. The predicted drift of 455 common dolphins and harbour porpoises that were tagged and discarded by fishing vessels was calculated by a drift prediction model (MOTHY). Of the tags deployed, stranding was predicted for 309 carcasses (278 common dolphins and 31 harbour porpoises), and 84 animals were discovered (78 common dolphins and 6 harbour porpoises). Bycatch in trammel nets and in midwater pair trawls resulted in a higher probability of these carcasses being recovered stranded. The predicted duration of the drift, on the other hand, had a negative effect on the number of strandings observed. The percentage of harbour porpoises that float was 27% (95% CI [12%,43%]), while it was 31% (95% CI [24%, 39%]) for common dolphins. These results contribute to the improvement of estimates of bycatch of small cetaceans inferred from strandings, which are used to inform conservation measures, particularly for the common dolphin in the North-East Atlantic. Semen quality is generally improved using voluntary collection methods, particularly artificial vaginas (AVs). Most commercially available AVs are tube-shaped with few species-specific design augmentations. As genitalia are highly variable across taxa, incorporating species-specific genital morphologies into AV designs may enhance collected semen quality. We compared dolphin semen quality using: (1) silicone bioinspired artificial vaginas (BAVs) that reflect the internal shape of dolphin vaginas, and (2) manual stimulation. Sperm motility and kinematic parameters of five bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) were assessed using computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA). Sperm collected using BAVs showed non-significant increases in median progressive and rapid motility, and increases in median and mean linear motility, supporting a sexual selection functional hypothesis for the biodiverse vaginal folds unique to whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Sperm concentration decreased with BAV collection, while no consistent trends were detected in volume, pH, velocity, or plasma membrane integrity. Modifications to AVs for other species that incorporate genital morphologies may also optimize collected semen quality for application to artificial insemination. New article on dolphin vocal behavior during bubble burst production

Abstract: In Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, prior work has suggested that whistle vocalizations often have been observed to co-occur with one bubble type, the bubble stream. However, vocal correlates have not been identified for another type of bubble, the bubble burst. While watching research session recordings, we serendipitously observed an absence of dolphin vocalization during bubble bursts. We formally investigated this in two studies by examining bubble bursts produced by 11 dolphins participating in various tasks with an exploratory study (*n* = 553) and a preregistered, confirmatory study (*n* = 150). In both studies, we compare the amplitude during the production of the bubble burst to the 2 s prior to its production, and the presence/absence of different vocal types. Amplitude during the bubble burst was significantly quieter than the 2 s prior, and there were significant reductions in all vocal types, especially among whistles and burst-pulses, in both studies. Physiological evidence supports this phenomenon, since dolphin vocal production depends on pneumatic pressure in the nasal system, which may be relieved when the bubble burst is produced. However, testing in acoustically isolated conditions is necessary to confirm our observations. Abstract Over the last two decades, ocean warming and rapid loss of sea ice have dramatically changed the Pacific Arctic marine environment1<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR1>,2<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR2>,3<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR3>. These changes are predicted to increase harmful algal bloom prevalence and toxicity, as rising temperatures and larger open water areas are more favourable for growth of some toxic algal species4<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR4>. It is well known that algal toxins are transferred through food webs during blooms and can have negative impacts on wildlife and human health5<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR5>,6<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR6>,7<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR7>. Yet, there are no long-term quantitative reports on algal toxin presence in Arctic food webs to evaluate increasing exposure risks. In the present study, algal toxins were quantified in bowel samples collected from 205 bowhead whales harvested for subsistence purposes over 19 years. These filter-feeding whales served as integrated food web samplers for algal toxin presence in the Beaufort Sea as it relates to changing environmental conditions over two decades. Algal toxin prevalences and concentrations were significantly correlated with ocean heat flux, open water area, wind velocity and atmospheric pressure. These results provide confirmative oceanic, atmospheric and biological evidence for increasing algal toxin concentrations in Arctic food webs due to warming ocean conditions. This approach elucidates breakthrough mechanistic connections between warming oceans and increasing algal toxin exposure risks to Arctic wildlife, which threatens food security for Native Alaskan communities that have been reliant on marine resources for subsistence for 5,000 years (ref. 8<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09230-5#ref-CR8>). Terms of Reference (ToR) - WWF Netherlands Expert marine megafauna / marine mammal conservation science – Caribbean Marine Megafauna and Anthropogenic Activities (CAMAC) WWF-NL Background The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the largest independent conservation organizations in the world. We are an international NGO committed to environmental protection and active in nearly 100 countries. WWF-Netherlands (NL) works on conservation efforts in the Caribbean, including the Dutch Caribbean islands, collaborating with governments, businesses, knowledge institutes, local communities, and partner organizations to protect and restore marine biodiversity and ecosystems. In 2022, WWF and its partners released the report Protecting Blue Corridors: Challenges and Solutions for Migratory Whales Navigating National and International Seas<https://wwfwhales.org/resources/protecting-blue-corridors-report>. In June 2025, this evolved into a collaborative initiative with the marine mammal science community, showcased through the interactive digital platform bluecorridors.org<https://bluecorridors.org/>. These connectivity conservation initiatives are central to our global efforts to protect marine megafauna Project Description WWF-NL is a consortium partner in the CAMAC (Caribbean Marine Megafauna and Anthropogenic Activities)<https://sanctuaire-agoa.fr/editorial/camac-0> project, which is led by the Agoa Sanctuary on behalf of the French Agency of Biodiversity (OFB) and co-financed by the EU Interreg Caribbean programme. CAMAC aims to understand and limit the negative interactions between human activities and marine megafauna, such as marine mammals, sea turtles, sharks, rays, and seabirds, across the Wider Caribbean and Guiana Plateau. The project entered its second phase in 2025, focusing on improving scientific knowledge, strengthening regional cooperation, and implementing conservation strategies for marine species. The CAMAC project is structured into multiple work packages (WPs), with this contract linked to delivering on Work Package 4 (WP4), which focuses on enhancing knowledge of whales, dolphins and seabirds in the Caribbean that runs from September 2025 until the end of 2027. WP4 aims to: * Collect and analyze existing data on species distribution, populations, and movements to identify conservation priorities and solutions. * Assess the impacts of human activities on marine mammals and seabirds. * Map critical habitats—such as migration corridors and bottlenecks—and identify solutions to support conservation planning for these species groups. * Strengthen collaboration among stakeholders involved in marine megafauna conservation. Scope of Work * The consultancy will primarily focus on WP4: Enhancing Knowledge on Whales, Dolphins, and Seabirds and ensure alignment with the other WPs. Main deliverables: * Data request and sharing agreement for data contributors agreed with main stakeholders. * Online database or platform containing data sources collected during the project period agreed by main stakeholders. * Reports: most recent knowledge on distribution, density, population and conservation status of cetaceans, seabirds and potentially marine turtles in the Caribbean, human interaction analysis and management solutions based on data from WPs and existing data and literature and aligned with WP5 on sharks and rays. * Organize a stakeholder workshop and related report on knowledge of marine megafauna and human interaction for policy and decision making based on stakeholder consultation. * Co-produce peer-reviewed scientific publications, policy briefs, and outreach materials such as videos with CAMAC partners. Internal: * Update workplan of WP4 in line with project standards (e.g. Gantt-chart) and agreed with the client. * Written advice on focus species and human activities for analyses and how to best manage and visualize data and study results agreed by CAMAC partners. * Stakeholder mapping within the CAMAC project focus. * Half-year and final reporting of consultancy activities and deliverables meeting the CAMAC reporting requirements. * All deliverables and activities will happen in close collaboration with CAMAC partners and related WPs, BirdsCaribbean, WWF Protecting Whales & Dolphins initiative, WWF Global Turtle Program and in consultation of the expert group from CAMAC phase 1 and the CARIMAM network. Responsibilities include: Marine Megafauna Research & Data Management: * Collect and synthesize existing data on marine mammal distribution and movement in the Wider Caribbean and where possible link it to bluecorridors.org. * Oversee data-sharing agreements and collaborations with scientific institutions and research organizations. * Support the analysis and visualization of marine mammal hotspots and their interaction with human activities. * Lead the collection and collation of data with stakeholders to assess cetacean movement and distribution and make connections to (regional) Blue Corridor Reports. Threat Analysis & Risk and Solutions Mapping: * Assessment of impacts of human interactions such as fisheries, maritime traffic, climate change, offshore construction, harvest and pollution on marine mammals. * Support spatial overlap analyses to identify critical risk areas for marine megafauna. * Synthesize research into actionable conservation strategies. * Identify bottlenecks, risk hotspots, and conservation opportunities and solutions for whale and turtle migration routes relevant in the context of (regional) Blue Corridor Reports. Stakeholder Engagement & Conservation Recommendations: * Work with Caribbean, International and European conservation bodies to develop mitigation measures. * Facilitate knowledge exchange with scientists, NGOs, regional Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and policymakers. * Engage with relevant stakeholders to develop policy recommendations. * Organize a workshop and stakeholder meetings. * Contribute to the final CAMAC workshop, where conservation recommendations will be presented. * Contact person for data contributors Communication & Dissemination: * Develop outreach materials to communicate research findings to decision-makers and the public. * Ensure that research outcomes contribute to regional and national conservation policies. * Support integration of WP4 findings into broader marine conservation efforts including the Blue Corridors approach. * Disseminate findings through scientific publications, policy briefs, and outreach materials. Profile of the Candidate * We are seeking a highly motivated marine conservation science expert with experience in marine megafauna research, marine spatial analysis, project management and stakeholder engagement. New Publication: Drone-Based Photogrammetry Provides Estimates of the Energetic Cost of Migration for Humpback Whales Between Antarctica and Colombia

Dear Marman members, On behalf of my colleagues, I am pleased to share with you our recent open access publication in Marine Mammal Science: https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.70048 ABSTRACT Monitoring the body condition of animals offers insights into their energetic needs, prey consumption, and vulnerability to environmental pressures. Southern hemisphere humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) depend on Antarctic krill for their annual energy requirements. Drone-based photogrammetry was used to assess the energetic cost of migration and reproduction for breeding stock G humpback whales. Body measurements of 103 adult whales (2017–2019) were used to estimate body condition in Colombia (breeding ground) and the Western Antarctic Peninsula (feeding ground) and seasonal change was predicted. Humpback whales reached their peak body condition between early March and late May, and their lowest between late August and early December. The change in body condition was converted into losses of blubber volume, mass, lipid, energy, and ultimately the biomass of krill required to cover migration. On average, an adult humpback whale lost 36 percentage points of its body condition over the migration, equivalent to 12 m3 or 11,000 kg of blubber tissue, 5000 kg of lipid, 196,000,000 kJ or 57,000 kg of Antarctic krill. By linking migration and reproductive energy costs to krill biomass, our findings provide critical ecological context for understanding how environmental changes such as krill population fluctuations could impact whale populations. Thank you, Rodrigo Abstract Ocean warming, acidification, and deoxygenation are expected to intensify without significant climate mitigation. In the tropics, rising ocean temperatures may push marine species to their thermal limits, leading to redistributions and cascading effects on communities and ecosystems. We evaluate how future climate change scenarios could impact the habitat suitability of an endemic species of the western tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Guiana dolphin, *Sotalia guianensis*. Using data from systematic surveys conducted between 1987 and 2023 complemented by open-source databases, we built the most comprehensive occurrence dataset for the species and developed ensemble Species Distribution Models to predict future distributions under the latest CMIP6 projected scenarios—‘optimistic’ (SSP1-2.6), ‘intermediate’ (SSP2-4.5), ‘pessimistic’ (SSP5-8.5)—using expert knowledge to validate model predictions in the present. Our models project substantial range contractions under all climate scenarios. By 2070, under the pessimistic scenario, suitable habitat is expected to decline by 46.9 %, nearly doubling the habitat loss projected under the optimistic scenario (23 %). Guiana dolphins are expected to lose habitat in northeastern Brazil and along the Caribbean coast (except Costa Rica). Remaining suitable areas are expected to become fragmented and confined to southeastern and southern Brazil, where the coastal zone is the most urbanized and degraded. Currently, only 21.6 % of the predicted Guiana dolphin range overlaps with Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and just 1.8 % is covered by MPAs that prohibit extractive activities—a small proportion expected to decline from 19 % to 14 % in the future. Our study highlights the urgent need to incorporate climate change into conservation strategies for coastal tropical marine predators. Expedition Sailing Vessel for Marine Mammal Research in Patagonia / Antarctica / South Georgia

Dear all, I am the captain and owner of a 12-meter French aluminum expedition sailing vessel. The boat will reach the waters of Patagonia in December 2025 and will sail to Antarctica for a one-month expedition in February 2026. It will then remain based in the Ushuaia / Puerto Williams area for the coming years. I would like to make this vessel available as a *logistical platform for research and conservation projects focused on marine mammals*, particularly in remote or hard-to-access regions. With access to key ecological areas, including the Beagle Channel, the waters surrounding the Falklands and South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula, the boat offers a flexible, low-impact support base for small research teams or data collection. I previously worked on board a sailing vessel involved in marine mammal data collection in the Mediterranean Sea, which has given me experience in supporting acoustic and visual surveys as well as marine fauna observation protocols. I'm very interested in continuing to contribute to marine mammal research and protection in the Southern Ocean, including through collaborations with scientists or institutions involved in conservation programs.
