Age-specific body length, mass, and energetic cost of growth in humpback whales. *Mar Ecol Prog Ser*, 770, 171-194. doi: 10.3354/meps14937 Abstract: Body size is a fundamental parameter in modeling the energetic trade-offs related to growth, activity, maintenance, and reproduction. This study integrated photogrammetry from an unoccupied aerial system (UAS; drone) with individual life histories, historical whaling records, and post-mortem tissue samples to estimate body mass and compare somatic growth costs in humpback whales *Megaptera novaeangliae*. Using 2651 UAS-derived length measurements and demographic information of 1503 individuals, sex-specific von Bertalanffy growth curves were developed from birth to 50 yr. Asymptotic lengths were estimated at 13 m for females and 12.34 m for males, with calves reaching 71-75% of their asymptotic length by weaning (~1 yr). Volume-at-age curves of whales in average body condition were converted to mass using UAS-derived body volume estimates, post-mortem tissue density samples, and published estimates of tissue composition. The cost of growth in calves and adults was modeled using tissue-specific lipid and protein concentrations derived from post-mortem tissue samples and published estimates, respectively. We found that postnatal offspring growth requires ~38 times more energy than prenatal growth, with calves needing 6-8 times more energy per day than mature adults. The cumulative cost of growth averaged 713 GJ for females and 607 GJ for males. We highlight a critical period of energetic demand for lactating females, who must support one-third of their offspring’s lifetime growth costs in just 1 yr. Estimating body mass and the cost of growth in humpback whales offers valuable insights for bioenergetic models assessing the effects of disturbance and a rapidly changing climate. The selected candidate will assist BDRI biologists in ongoing projects focusing on the effects of marine vessels on bottlenose dolphin behavior. New publication: Twelve years of fin whale song evolution in the central North Pacific

Sci. 12:1642598. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2025.1642598 https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science/articles/10.3389/fmars.… Abstract: Fin whale song consists of low frequency notes arranged in regular, repeating patterns of note type pairings and inter-note intervals (INIs). In the central North Pacific, fin whales use two downswept note types (A and B notes) with both singlet and doublet INIs that are interwoven throughout a song. These song patterns have been observed to change over time. Fin whale population size, structure, distribution, and connectedness are poorly understood, but monitoring their songs can help fill these knowledge gaps. In this study, we examine fin whale song patterns and their evolution across 12 years (2011–2023) with a focus on the most recent 5.5 years (2017–2023), expanding on our previous work. Between August 2017 and March 2023, automated detection, localization, tracking, and classification methods on 33 hydrophones at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) off Kaua’i, Hawai’i enabled a detailed analysis of song patterns produced during 331 individual fin whale encounters that contained 130,402 notes. We categorized song patterns, quantified changes over time, and calculated cue rates in these fin whale tracks, detected between late fall and early spring. Five song patterns were observed, usually interwoven throughout a song with INIs of 30 s for A-A singlets, 17/32 s for A-A doublets, 34 s for B-B singlets, 16/23 s for B-B doublets, and 15/22 s for A-B doublets. A-B doublet has remained the dominant song pattern in this region and both A-B and B-A INIs have increased over time with the two INIs getting closer in recent years. While these five INI peaks persisted across seasons, certain INI distributions contained substantial variability and new patterns were observed. Our findings emphasize the need for nuanced acoustic analyses that account for note type and INIs. This analysis highlights the complexity of fin whale song and provides a robust foundation for long-term monitoring and comparative analyses across the North Pacific with song patterns serving as indicators of connectivity between different geographic regions. Ultimately this work can be applied to help define populations and the number of individuals in an area. New publication: VHR satellite imagery for live and stranded cetacean

Dear MARMAM community, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our new publication 'Talking about the weather: the feasibility of using very high-resolution optical satellite imagery to monitor live and stranded cetaceans around the UK and UK Overseas Territories. Monitoring live and stranded cetaceans can be expensive and logistically challenging, resulting in knowledge gaps. Very high-resolution (VHR) optical satellites are considered a potential solution to addressing some of these gaps. Despite success at detecting live and stranded cetaceans, satellites have only been trialled on restricted spatiotemporal scales. This project presents a framework for assessing the feasibility of using VHR optical satellite-based monitoring of cetaceans at high temporal frequency and local to global scales, focusing on the UK and UK Overseas Territories as a case study. We assess the primary environmental conditions necessary for the successful application of this technology: cloud cover and wind speed. Five-year monthly median "Total cloud cover" and "10m wind speed" ERA5 global reanalysis data were analysed to map the spatial feasibility of satellite monitoring. We found that for the United Kingdom, VHR optical satellites could complement existing monitoring methods to achieve greater spatial and temporal coverage of live cetacean surveys, particularly, offshore, during the boreal spring and summer. However, satellites cannot address gaps in UK live cetacean monitoring in winter due to high wind speeds reducing whale detection probability. Based on environmental conditions, the tropics hold the greatest promise for achieving year-round satellite-based cetacean monitoring. In the Falkland Islands, particularly, the remote, unpopulated coastlines of West Island, satellites have the potential to improve strandings monitoring, opportunistically complementing existing stranding monitoring efforts. Hello everyone, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking a Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Scientist III to join the Imperiled Species Management Section's Commenting Team. This position assists with developing conservation measures to reduce potential adverse impacts to species with a focus on Florida manatee and marine turtle conservation through the review of permit applications. Main job duties include reviewing permit applications and developing biological opinions to minimize or avoid impacts to protected species on regulatory permits such as environmental resource permits (ERP) and coastal construction control line permits (CCCL), implementing county manatee protection plans (MPPs) and conducting MPP consistency determinations, and providing technical assistance to various stakeholders including the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), and local counties/cities.
