Contracted Expert Team/Organization to conduct an appraisal of cetacean-marine debris encounter data to enable a global risk assessment IWC68 adopted Resolution 2022-1, calling for a coordinated scientific effort to assess the impact of marine plastic pollution on cetaceans. At IWC69 the Commission identified an initial goal of conducting a literature study to summarize the impacts of marine debris on cetaceans to lay the groundwork for a global risk assessment. To address this request the Commission endorsed a research project, overseen by the Intersessional Correspondence Group on Marine Debris, to undertake an assessment of data availability with a detailed report of the findings to be presented to IWC70 for consideration by the Commission. Applicants should be experts with experience related to environmental studies and marine debris particularly in relation to cetaceans. The conservation status of many CEPTU species remains poorly documented, particularly in offshore areas, resulting in major data gaps in Habitats Directive reporting. The project aims to identify key offshore CEPTU areas and risk zones in the Western Mediterranean and Adriatic marine regions, while developing a harmonized approach for systematic surveillance. A multidisciplinary methodology integrates visual monitoring, environmental DNA (eDNA), stable isotope analysis (SIA), and spatial modeling. Passenger ferries serve as cost-effective, fixed-route platforms for continuous offshore data collection. Visual surveys record CEPTU presence and anthropogenic pressures such as maritime traffic (MT) and floating marine macro litter (FMML). eDNA analysis detects cryptic or nocturnal species and provides insights into species diversity and trophic interactions. SIA of δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N ratios in particulate organic matter identifies trophic structures and productivity hotspots, while Species Distribution Models (SDMs) predict Ecological Potential Ranges and key habitats. Findings highlight the Alboran–Gibraltar region, Pelagos Sanctuary, and Spanish Cetacean Migration Corridor as priority conservation areas. Different species-specific trends are highlighted. As for example, fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) presence is generally stable, with increases in the Pelagos Sanctuary but declines in Spanish waters. FMML exposure risk is highest for cetaceans in the Ligurian–Provençal Basin during spring and summer, while Caretta caretta exhibits the most persistent exposure in the Adriatic and Central Tyrrhenian Seas. Maritime Traffic (MT) poses the greatest year-round risk in the Alboran Sea and Strait of Gibraltar, where intense shipping corridors overlap with CEPTU distribution. Additionally, 101 Near Miss Events (NMEs), used as proxies for ship strike risk, were recorded since 2008, primarily involving large and medium-sized cetaceans. These NMEs confirm persistent danger in the north-western Mediterranean and reveal new risk zones in the Gibraltar, Alboran, Balearic, and Sicily Channels, showing a significant correlation with species Encounter Rate (ER) and vessel speed, particularly for Balaenoptera physalus. The results of LIFE CONCEPTU MARIS are synthesized within a Decision Support Framework (DSF) and implemented through a Decision Support System (DSS) tool that supports effective conservation planning and policy uptake. This framework directly assists EU Member States in fulfilling Habitats Directive Article 11 (long-term surveillance) and Article 17 (reporting) obligations. By integrating data collection, risk assessment, and spatial modeling, the project provides a robust, adaptive, and cross-border approach to protecting CEPTU species and mitigating dynamic threats across the Mediterranean Sea.

Protected Species Observer Certification Course on November 8-9

MPSC is offering an online training course that provides Protected Species Observer (also known as Marine Mammal Observer) certification on November 8-9, 2025. This training is approved by the federal agencies Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in coordination with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to provide Protected Species Observer Certification for geological and geophysical survey exploration for oil and gas or other resources in the Gulf of Mexico, and the certification is often accepted in many other regions or industries where monitoring and mitigation is required for reducing impacts to protected species. Course cost includes the instruction, advice on applying to PSO positions, the professional certification, and the provision of various regulatory documents and supplementary identification guides which will be yours to keep. This course will examine the regulations for reducing impacts to marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, how to locate and identify the animals, and the monitoring and objective reporting that is required for submission to regulatory agencies. After discussing regulatory requirements, we will examine key identifying traits and behaviors of the different protected species, as well as the key visual cues which can enable location of protected species in a dynamic and rapidly-changing environment. The course also includes discussions on how to prepare and pack for life offshore. The live, interactive discussions for this course provide a personalized approach to learning as we discuss how to identify protected species and how to document impacts to the animals. The interactive discussion in this course will also include best practice methods for living and working with other PSOs and vessel crew within a collaborative team environment, in order to effectively advise on the regulatory measures required to document and reduce impacts to protected species. By monitoring for marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, advising on the mitigation measures that are required, and documenting impacts through impartial and unbiased reporting, PSOs serve a crucial role in the conservation of protected species during industry operations. A Global assessment of dugong status and global conservation needs

The Convention of Migratory Species/UNEP/Dugong MOU report : ‘A global assessment of dugong status and conservation needs’ was launched at the World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi on October 12. The 342 page report synthesizes the science, expert knowledge, and field data to guide conservation actions to protect dugongs and their seagrass habitats across the species’ range. The report contains 11 chapters: 9 regional chapters bookended by an introductory chapter and a final chapter summarizing its Key Learnings. The report is the work of more than 70 authors; between 5 and 11regional experts co-authored each of the regional chapters. The take-home message of the report is that the status and conservation needs of the dugong vary throughout its range. Co-operation within regions is vital. The Dugong MOU developed under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals is key to facilitating regional cooperation to guide the development and delivery of practical conservation initiatives for dugongs and their habitats. Audubon Aquarium Rescue Stranding Internship

Hello Everyone, We are accepting applications for a Spring (Jan-June 2026) AAR Stranding Intern. The position will be based in New Orleans and does include a stipend. The main objectives of Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR) are to enhance stranding response and data collection of marine mammals and sea turtles in Louisiana. AAR is committed to the humane care and treatment of injured, ill or displaced marine animals. The information collected from stranded animals provides a snapshot into the health of the marine environment and provides a better understanding of threats to marine mammals and sea turtles in the wild. Day to Day Responsibilities: Throughout the internship, the intern will become an integral team member and will assist with stranding response, beach surveys, marine mammals and sea turtle necropsies, paperwork, cleaning, vehicle maintenance and animal husbandry. Live animal rehab is possible but should not be expected throughout the duration of the internship. The above-listed duties are general statements of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. They do not exclude other duties as assigned. Time Commitment and Compensation: Due to the unpredictable nature of strandings, interns are required to be in the office 5 days per week (with some weekend coverage), 8 hours a day (with occasional longer hours). The schedule should be considered flexible as one may not exceed 40 hours per week. A weekly stipend of $290 will be offered.
