Hi All, Registration is still open for Fall 2023. The University of Florida, Aquatic Animal Health Program is offering the Aquatic Animal Conservation Issues and Marine Mammal Biology courses, fully online. Classes start Wednesday August 23rd and run through Wednesday, December 6th. * Registration will remain open through Aug 29th. Aquatic Animal Conservation Issues Class (VME-4012, VME-6010) is an online course (3 credits) designed to introduce students (upper level undergraduate and graduate) and professionals (with an AA or higher degree) to the controversial issues surrounding aquatic animal species ranging from invertebrates to marine mammals, with an emphasis on marine mammals, but also including sea turtles, fisheries, and marine ecosystems. Students enrolled at any College or University can take this course. Marine Mammal Biology (VME-6014) is an online graduate course that will provide graduate students with a detailed overview of marine mammal species including cetaceans, sirenians, pinnipeds, mustelids, and ursids. Update to SOCPROG

A new and updated version of SOCPROG, SOCPROG2.9 (both compiled and uncompiled downloads) is available at: http://whitelab.biology.dal.ca/SOCPROG/social.htm SOCPROG is a MATLAB-based package of programs for the analysis of animal social structures, movements and populations. The compiled version does not need MATLAB itself. This version is compatible with MATLAB2018b (although it will likely work well on recent and soon-to-be-released versions of MATLAB). New publication on rhythm in cetacean vocalizations

Cetaceans are the next frontier for vocal rhythm research. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 121(25), e2313093121. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2313093121 Abstract: While rhythm can facilitate and enhance many aspects of behavior, its evolutionary trajectory in vocal communication systems remains enigmatic. We can trace evolutionary processes by investigating rhythmic abilities in different species, but research to date has largely focused on songbirds and primates. We present evidence that cetaceans—whales, dolphins, and porpoises—are a missing piece of the puzzle for understanding why rhythm evolved in vocal communication systems. Cetaceans not only produce rhythmic vocalizations but also exhibit behaviors known or thought to play a role in the evolution of different features of rhythm. These behaviors include vocal learning abilities, advanced breathing control, sexually selected vocal displays, prolonged mother–infant bonds, and behavioral synchronization. The untapped comparative potential of cetaceans is further enhanced by high interspecific diversity, which generates natural ranges of vocal and social complexity for investigating various evolutionary hypotheses. We show that rhythm (particularly isochronous rhythm, when sounds are equally spaced in time) is prevalent in cetacean vocalizations but is used in different contexts by baleen and toothed whales. We also highlight key questions and research areas that will enhance understanding of vocal rhythms across taxa. By coupling an infraorder- level taxonomic assessment of vocal rhythm production with comparisons to other species, we illustrate how broadly comparative research can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the prevalence, evolution, and possible functions of rhythm in animal communication. SMM2024 Workshop - Entanglement of Large Whales in Trap/Pot Gear

Dear MARMAM Community, We would like to announce that we will be hosting a workshop on the entanglement of large whales in trap/pot gear at the biennial conference, which is being held this November in Perth, Australia. If you are interested, then please read on and let us know of your plans - see questions at end. The full-day workshop will take place before the conference on Sunday, November 10th at the conference venue (Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre). The purpose of the workshop is to bring together a range of stakeholders from around the world to share their knowledge and experience with a range of topics associated with the entanglement of large whales in the fishing gear used by pot/trap fisheries. In addition, we welcome the participation of newcomers to this issue who are looking to learn from the experiences of others. We hope that the workshop will catalyze the creation of a network of individuals who will continue to share their knowledge and experiences, leading to an improved understanding and mitigation of entanglement of large whales in trap/pot gear. The workshop will likely include a few presentations, a lot of discussion, and some planning of additional actions aimed at connecting people. At this time, there are not any plans to make the workshop available online; in other words participation will be in-person only. New publication: Bottlenose dolphin habitat partitioning in relation to age classes

(2024) Bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops truncatus*) habitat partitioning in relation to age classes in the northwest Mediterranean Sea. Mar Biol 171, 137. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00227-024-04457-8 Abstract: Understanding the impact of environmental and biological factors on species’ habitat use is crucial for conservation. A regular presence of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) has recently been observed in the Western Ligurian Sea, but their distribution, habitat preferences, and social dynamics remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate these aspects, focusing on spatial distribution and habitat partitioning by age classes. Data were collected during 273 boat-based surveys from April 2018 to December 2021, resulting in 146 dolphin sightings. Group size and composition were analysed based on three group-types: N-groups including at least one newborn (n = 35), C-groups with at least one calf but no newborns (n = 62) and A-groups comprising only independent juveniles, subadults and/or adults (n = 49). Using an ensemble modelling approach (BIOMOD), each group’s distribution was separately modelled incorporating seven environmental variables. Bathymetry, distance to the shelf break, bottom type and sea surface temperature emerged as the most significant predictors influencing groups’ distribution. Results showed N-groups predominantly occupying areas further from the shore, C-groups distributed across both coastal waters and areas near the shelf break and A-groups principally found very close to shore. The study suggests habitat selection and group size vary based on the unique needs and threats faced by the different age classes. These insights are highly valuable for managing bottlenose dolphins in the Ligurian Sea, considering the area’s particular morphology that leads to an important overlap between their presence and local anthropogenic activities. New publication on large whale strandings on the US East Coast

Conservation Biology. http://doi.org/10.1111/cobi.14302 Abstract: Anthropogenic stressors threaten large whales globally. Effective management requires an understanding of where, when, and why threats are occurring. Strandings data provide key information on geographic hotspots of risk and the relative importance of various threats. There is currently considerable public interest in the increased frequency of large whale strandings occurring along the US East Coast of the United States since 2016. Interest is accentuated due to a purported link with offshore wind energy development. We reviewed spatiotemporal patterns of strandings, mortalities, and serious injuries of humpback whales (*Megaptera novaeangliae*), the species most frequently involved, for which the US government has declared an “unusual mortality event” (UME). Our analysis highlights the role of vessel strikes, exacerbated by recent changes in humpback whale distribution and vessel traffic. Humpback whales have expanded into new foraging grounds in recent years. Mortalities due to vessel strikes have increased significantly in these newly occupied regions, which show high vessel traffic that also increased markedly during the UME. Surface feeding and feeding in shallow waters may have been contributing factors. We found no evidence that offshore wind development contributed to strandings or mortalities. This work highlights the need to consider behavioral, ecological, and anthropogenic factors to determine the drivers of mortality and serious injury in large whales and to provide informed guidance to decision-makers. Protected Species Observer Certification Course on July 20-21

MPSC is offering an online training course that provides Protected Species Observer (also known as Marine Mammal Observer) certification on July 20-21, 2024. This training is approved by the federal agencies Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in coordination with National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to provide Protected Species Observer Certification for geological and geophysical surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, and the certification is often accepted in many other regions or industries where monitoring and mitigation is required for reducing impacts to protected species. Course cost includes the instruction, advice on applying to PSO positions, the professional certification, and the provision of various regulatory documents and supplementary identification guides which will be yours to keep. This course will examine the regulations for reducing impacts to marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, how to locate and identify the animals, and the monitoring and objective reporting that is required for submission to regulatory agencies. After discussing regulatory requirements, we will examine key identifying traits and behaviors of the different protected species, as well as the key visual cues which can enable location of protected species in a dynamic and rapidly-changing environment. The course also includes discussions on how to prepare and pack for life offshore. The live, interactive discussions for this course provide a personalized approach to learning as we discuss how to identify protected species and how to document impacts to the animals. The interactive discussion in this course will also include best practice methods for living and working with other PSOs and vessel crew within a collaborative team environment, in order to effectively advise on the regulatory measures required to document and reduce impacts to protected species. By monitoring for marine mammals, sea turtles, and protected fish, advising on the mitigation measures that are required, and documenting impacts through impartial and unbiased reporting, PSOs serve a crucial role in the conservation of protected species during industry operations.
