The Marine Mammal Institute of Oregon State University is thrilled to introduce a new graduate course, HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF MARINE MAMMAL CONSERVATION, as part of Hatfield Marine Science Center's Summer Session in Newport, Oregon. Students need not be degree seeking, and everyone pays in-state tuition. The course runs Aug. 19-Sept. 6, 2024. *Registration is open now!* HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF MARINE MAMMAL CONSERVATION is a 4-credit, transdisciplinary course designed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools to devise conservation approaches that embrace humans as a critical part of marine ecosystems. Using marine mammals as case studies, this course is relevant to any human–animal wildlife conflicts. This course also fulfills a core requirement for the new Marine Mammal Graduate Certificate. In this inaugural offering, students will have the exclusive opportunity to learn from two esteemed marine mammal experts, Tara Whitty, a conservation professional and consultant who has partnered with organizations like WWF, IUCN, and UN Environment Programme, and Mauricio Cantor, OSU Assistant Professor and National Geographic Explorer. *Tara Sayuri Whitty* brings over 20 years of research experience to the field of conservation. Dr. Whitty's work has primarily focused on bycatch of marine megafauna in small-scale fisheries but has broadened to explore pathways by which conservation efforts succeed or fail and the role of inclusion, conflict, and other human interactions in those pathways. As a consultant, she has partnered with organizations around the world to support more effective, equitable, and ethical conservation. *Mauricio Cantor* is an Assistant Professor at the Marine Mammal Institute of Oregon State University, where he leads the Laboratory for Animal Behavioral Interaction Research in the Ocean (LABIRINTO). New paper published on common dolphin taxonomy

Dear MARMAM, On behalf of my co-authors, I am pleased to announce the publication of the following paper: The long-beaked common dolphin of the eastern Pacific Ocean: Taxonomic status and re-description of Delphinus bairdii Thomas A. Jefferson, Frederick I. Archer, and Kelly M. Robertson Abstract Neritic, long-beaked common dolphins have been described as species distinct from the more oceanic and globally-distributed short-beaked species, Delphinus delphis, although recent molecular studies have challenged this view. In the eastern North Pacific (ENP), the taxonomic status of the long-beaked (bairdii) form has been controversial since its original description in 1873, and has vacillated back and forth between species, subspecies, and geographic forms several times. It is currently provisionally viewed as a subspecies of Delphinus delphis, D. d. bairdii. To clarify this situation, we reviewed the literature and conducted additional analyses using both newly-obtained genetic and cranial morphometric data sets. The results indicate that there are diagnostic differences in skull morphology and coloration between the Eastern Pacific long-and short-beaked forms, and near-perfect diagnosability in mitochondrial DNA. These differences, along with indications of ecological distinctions, including important differences in life history parameters and reproductive timing, indicate that these forms are well on their way down separate evolutionary pathways. As such, we consider them to be distinct species in the Eastern Pacific. The long-beaked species is referable to Delphinus bairdii Dall, 1873, and is re-described as such herein. Join researchers from Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) for an evening sharing our marine mammal research. Aimed at engaging members of the public those in the Aberdeenshire area may still find it interesting to join and learn about the citizen science aspects of the research taking place. The three talks on the evening are: SOS Puffin Dr Helen Anderson (Lecturer in Ecology, Scotland's Rural College (SRUC)) Puffins are arguably everyone's favourite seabird. But at one of the UK's largest puffin colonies numbers plummeted from over 10,000 to less than 1000 in a few short years. The reason - a giant invasive plant called tree mallow. Find out how tree mallow stopped these charismatic seabirds from breeding. Learn how researchers and the Scottish Seabird Centre mustered an army of volunteers to bring puffins back home. Assessing Sustainability of Seal Tourism in the Ythan Estuary Claire Stainfield (PhD Researcher, Scotland's Rural College (SRUC)) Management between recreation and biodiversity has multiple approaches to try to achieve a protection framework to maintain human benefits, maximise ecosystem protection and minimize environmental impacts. I plan to expand the ecological knowledge of the seal population, explore modern social opinions and land-use, and determine the infrastructure in place for seal tourism. The overarching goal is to combine ecology with social science to help make a robust assessment of land-use and explore the association between seals and humans in relation to sustainability for seal tourism in the area. Commotion in the Ocean Dr Sarah Marley (Senior Lecturer in Ecology, Scotland's Rural College (SRUC)) Everyone pictures the ocean as clear waters, colourful fish, and a place of relaxation. But the truth is, the marine environment is a dark and murky place. As a result, the animals who live there have evolved to rely on sound - rather than vision - to explore the world around them. From singing whales to trumpeting fish to creaking lobsters, the underwater world is full of sound. Researchers are using underwater microphones to eavesdrop on this aquatic orchestra and learn more about the animals lurking beneath the waves. But we've discovered a problem... Man-made noise pollution is changing the soundscape of our ocean. Join us to learn more about this commotion in the ocean and what we can potentially do to help silence our seas. New Publication: Isotopic niches reveal the trophic structure of the cetacean community in the oceanic waters around the Azores

Dear MARMAM Community, We are pleased to share our recent publication in Frontiers in Marine Science - Marine Megafauna: Lebon M, Colaço A, Prieto R, Cascão I, Oliveira C, Tobeña M, Planque Y, Spitz J and Silva MA (2024) Isotopic niches reveal the trophic structure of the cetacean community in the oceanic waters around the Azores. Front. Mar. Sci. 11:1283357. doi: 10.3389/fmars.2024.1283357 Abstract : The oceanic waters around the Azores host a high diversity of cetaceans, with 28 species of toothed and baleen whales present year-round or seasonally. This high cetacean biodiversity likely plays an important role in the structure, functioning and productivity of the ecosystem, and may increase trophic redundancy, thus contributing to food web resilience to disturbances. Here we used stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) analysis to characterize trophic niches, assess niche overlap, describe the trophic structure and discuss potential redundancy in the cetacean community. Using 407 samples from 12 species, we estimated Standard Ellipse Areas and overlaps between species and used a hierarchical clustering analysis to identify trophic guilds. δ13C and δ15N values ranged from -20.53 to -15.46‰ and from 7.78 to 14.41‰ respectively, suggesting the use of diverse habitats and resources among cetacean species. Clustering analysis revealed that species were grouped into four trophic guilds, segregated mainly by trophic position (TP): a low-TP guild with three zooplanktivore baleen whales, a mid-TP guild with micronektivores, a high-TP guild with micronekton and nekton consumers, and a cluster with only Pseudorca crassidens. There was significant isotopic niche overlap between one pair of species within each guild, indicating some potential for trophic redundancy in the community. Yet, these pairs also showed some form of spatial or temporal partitioning, suggesting that mechanisms promoting species coexistence could play a key role in structuring the cetacean community in the region and in its ecological role. Greetings, The National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) is announcing the availability of the “Update to: Technical Guidance for Assessing the Effects of Anthropogenic Sound on Marine Mammal Hearing (Version 3.0): Underwater and In-Air Criteria for Onset of Auditory Injury and Temporary Threshold Shifts” (Draft Updated Technical Guidance) for a 45-day public comment period until June 17, 2024 (starting May 3). NOAA Fisheries has developed the Draft Updated Technical Guidance for assessing the effects of anthropogenic sound on marine mammal species, underwater and in-air, under NOAA Fisheries’s jurisdiction. This document provides updated received levels and auditory weighting functions, or acoustic criteria, based on the best available science, at which individual marine mammals are predicted to experience changes in their hearing sensitivity (either auditory injury or temporary threshold shift) for all anthropogenic sound sources. Public Comment Period: Proposed rule to modify the regulations of MMPA section 104 permits and Letters of Confirmation

Today, NOAA Fisheries announces a proposed rule to modify the regulations to remove the restriction that limits the maximum duration for Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) section 104 permits and Letters of Confirmation (LOCs) to a term of five years. Under section 104 of the MMPA, NOAA Fisheries issues various types of permits for taking or importing marine mammals, including permits for scientific research, enhancement, public display, and commercial or educational photography, and LOCs under the general authorization for scientific research. Currently, the maximum duration for MMPA section 104 permits and LOCs is five years. The modification would remove the five year restriction and allow NOAA Fisheries to issue permits for longer periods of time, when appropriate. Individual permits would still have an expiration date, as required by the MMPA. The regulatory change would provide NOAA Fisheries with the flexibility to issue permits for terms greater than five years, in situations when a longer term would be appropriate. In some cases, permits and LOCs will continue to be issued for terms of five years or less. The public comment period for this rule is open from May 2, 2024 to June 3rd, 2024. Humpback whales research in southern Tanzania - call for volunteers

Dear Marmam members and community, there is one place remaining for the *Humpback whales research in southern Tanzania – Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park in August 2024. * The project focuses on monitoring the migrating humpback whales in Tanzania waters, using a variety of methods, including systematic small boat surveys with data collection on distribution, behaviour, group cohesion, photo identification and acoustics. Humpback whales arrive in Tanzania waters for breeding activities and are observed off Mnazi Bay marine protected area from July to October. Tanzania is witnessing remarkable recovery of these charismatic baleen whales after the severe depletion of the population by industrial whaling. Despite being the most studied species globally, very little research is conducted in Tanzania, leaving a considerable data gap, which prevents conservation status assessment. The current project aims to enhance information on species ecology, population structure, connectivity, abundance estimates, distribution, migration patterns, habitat use and breeding ecology by conducting pertinent research that began in 2017. By participating in the research, you’ll help to bridge crucial data gaps for better understanding of the conservation status of the subpopulation which will assist conservation strategy development in the region. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR We offer a limited number of volunteering placements for the 2024 season, that will take place in southern Tanzania with the research base in the heart of the Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park (MBREMP) – the most biodiverse seascape of the region and a cetacean hotspot. Selected volunteers will participate in the small boat surveys off MBREMP, and will assist in collecting visual and acoustic data on humpback whales, gaining practical experience and theoretical knowledge from reputable cetacean experts. Placements are open for the fixed period of 3 weeks starting early August 2024. REQUIREMENTS Genuine interest in marine conservation, integrity, self-motivation, maturity and ability to work responsibly; Physical fitness and mental endurance enabling sustaining long hours out at sea in sometimes challenging conditions; living in a camp with limited facilities Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment in a remote location; Respect for the project's rules and work ethics, willingness to adhere to the standards and protocols; Fluency in English (both spoken and written) and good communications skills; Willingness to learn new software applications and filed techniques; Ability to handle equipment responsibly and with due care; Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an advantage; FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES Participating in small boat-based surveys daily (total number of surveys is contingent on weather, but +- 15 surveys should be expected). Collecting whales sighting (as well as other cetaceans), behavioural, acoustic and photo identification data, alongside environmental and anthropogenic data; Operating various equipment including cameras, hydrophone (commensurate with skills and experience) and managing respective software programs (Logger, Discovery, Pamguard, ArcGIS etc.); Data entry and basic analysis; Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID studies via Discovery software; TRAINING The Tanzania Cetacean Program team provides lectures and field work training as well as constant mentoring. You will be given the chance to learn the most popular methodologies used in marine mammal research including: GIS mapping Photo-identification; Discovery, Darwin and Logger 2010 software; Systematic data collection and data analysis; PROJECT CONTRIBUTION The project contribution that participants are expected to pay to cover associated with placement expenses for the 3-week placement is $2,600. The contribution covers the cost of participation in the project and includes: Accommodation in a tented camp in the heart of the Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park; Basic meals; Training and lectures with a copy of the lecture on PDF; Fieldwork (daily boat surveys, up to +-15 surveys); Use of the equipment (subject to respective skills). Applicants are responsible for their international flights to/from Tanzania and internal flights to Mtwara, extra meals not included in the field work period, accommodation at the hotel upon arrival to Tanzania (Dar and/or Mtwara, depending on the flights timing), insurance (all participants must have health and/or travel insurance), visa and personal expenses. In the beautiful and remote location of the Mnazi Bay, you’ll have opportunity to: Encounter different cetacean species, including Risso’s and Spinner dolphins, Indo Pacific and Common Bottlenose dolphins. There are chances to encounter rarely seen in this region pelagic melon headed whales and pilot whales, and if we’re lucky, other cetacean species. Visit sand dunes. Snorkel pristine coral reefs. Visit Ruvuma Estuary and see hippos (at extra cost).
