Integrated Statistics is seeking several Acousticians to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC). The Acousticians will support the Protected Species Branch's Passive Acoustic Group, working on projects focused on anthropogenic noise, marine mammals, and fishes. The projects typically involve running acoustic detectors and analyzing data as well as graphic generation and writing up components of the project. Opportunities to participate in fieldwork are possible. *Duties* The Acousticians participate in one or more of these tasks: * Analyze bottom-mounted and mobile passive acoustic data to assess the distribution, occurrence, and habitat use of cetacean species along the US eastern seaboard using a combination of manual and automated detectors. * Analyze passive acoustic data to describe marine soundscapes, including biological, geological and anthropogenic contributions. * Analyze passive acoustic data to describe the occurrence and distribution of fishes. * Analyze passive acoustic data to describe the occurrence, distribution and relative source levels of vessels. * Assist with field collection of passive acoustic data as needed. * Assist in maintenance of a passive acoustic literature database in Endnote. * Assist with PSB Passive Acoustic Group webpage content and maintenance. * Assist in synthesizing and where applicable present results at relevant venues. * Assist with education and outreach activities conducted by the Passive Acoustic Group. *Qualifications* The Acoustician should possess: * Undergraduate degree in marine biology or a related biological science. A Master's degree in a relevant field is a bonus. * Some experience in analyzing acoustic data. Prior experience with Raven Pro/Matlab/R language software is a bonus. * Able to participate in fieldwork. * Excellent written and oral communications skills. * Ability to work collaboratively with a large group and multifaceted projects. * Basic understanding and prior experience with programming and data management is a bonus. * US citizenship and ability to comply with EO 14042. Open access here https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2022.1086686/full Abstract - Monitoring wildlife populations over scales relevant to management is critical to supporting conservation decision-making in the face of data deficiency, particularly for rare species occurring across large geographic ranges. The Pilbara region of Western Australia is home to two sympatric and morphologically similar species of coastal dolphins-the Indo-pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and Australian humpback dolphin (Sousa sahulensis)-both of which are believed to be declining in numbers and facing increasing pressures from the combined impacts of environmental change and extensive industrial activities. The aim of this study was to develop spatially explicit models of bottlenose and humpback dolphin abundance in Pilbara waters that could inform decisions about coastal development at a regional scale. Aerial line transect surveys were flown from a fixed-wing aircraft in the austral winters of 2015, 2016, and 2017 across a total area of 33,420 km2. Spatio-temporal patterns in dolphin density were quantified using a density surface modeling (DSM) approach, accounting for imperfect detection as well as both perception and availability bias. We estimated the abundance of bottlenose dolphins at 3,713 (95% CI = 2,679-5,146; average density of 0.189 _ 0.046 SD individuals per km2) in 2015, 2,638 (95% CI = 1,670-4,168; 0.159 _ 0.135 individuals per km2) in 2016 and 1,635 (95% CI = 1,031-2,593; 0.101 _ 0.103 individuals per km2) in 2017. Too few humpback dolphins were detected in 2015 to model abundance, but their estimated abundance was 1,546 (95% CI = 942-2,537; 0.097 _ 0.03 individuals per km2) and 2,690 (95% CI = 1,792-4,038; 0.169 _ 0.064 individuals per km2) in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Dolphin densities were greatest in nearshore waters, with hotspots in Exmouth Gulf, the Dampier Archipelago, and Great Sandy Islands. Our results provide a benchmark on which future risk assessments can be based to better understand the overlap between pressures and important dolphin habitats in tropical northwestern Australia. We used images obtained during a manned aerial survey over 13 non-consecutive days and covering a total of 3732 km of transects, in a high-wing aircraft flown at 185 km/h and an altitude of 152 m, equipped with three Single Lens Reflex cameras, to supplement estimates of dolphins recorded by observers. We used this opportunity to assess the adequacy of the resulting images for species identification of two morphologically similar dolphin species (i.e., with similar coloration and body size): the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and the Australian humpback dolphin (Sousa sahulensis) and to accurately estimate dolphin group size. We also compared dolphin group estimates and species identification made by observers during the aerial survey, with manual review of the aerial images, where images overlapped with the observers' field of view from the aircraft. We collected and reviewed 413000 images and found that an image resolution of 1.25 cm per pixel was adequate to distinguish between the two targeted dolphin species. Our findings suggest that aerial images can improve species identification and estimates of group size > 5. The camera setup and photography parameters that we describe here, with the survey altitude and speed that were used, has the potential to be used to identify, and accurately estimate other morphologically similar small-bodied (< 3 m) species in the marine environment. This will be an important consideration for future aerial surveys of low density, threatened species, that form small and sometimes mixed species groups, including humpback and bottlenose dolphins where their distribution overlaps. Spring Internships in Marine Mammal Rescue & Rehabilitation The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center is accepting applications for Spring internships in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, and public education. Internships are 12-14 weeks. The internships include a $1000 stipend. Applicants will be living and working in Crescent City, CA. The spring term (Harbor Seal Pupping Season) is the busiest and most "hands-on" term at NMMC. New publication: Seasonal Abundance, Density and Distribution of Cetaceans in the Bulgarian Black Sea Shelf in 2017

It is published in /Diversity/ *2023*, /15/(2), 229; https://doi.org/10.3390/d15020229 https://www.mdpi.com/1424-2818/15/2/229 <https://www.mdpi.com/1424-2818/15/2/229?fbclid=IwAR28J_vD0cqbz15Pl7ivBuozoJ…> Abstract: Black Sea cetaceans are isolated and nominated as endemic subspecies listed in the IUCN Red List of Endangered species: the harbour porpoise and bottlenose dolphin as Endangered (EN) and the common dolphin as Vulnerable (VU). Studies of their distribution and abundance are scarce but obligatory for assessment of their conservation status. Being highly mobile apex predators entails large variations in spatial and temporal distribution. Two vessel line–transect distance sampling surveys were conducted in 2017 in the Bulgarian shelf with the aim to estimate the density, abundance and distribution during spring and autumn. Results have revealed a shift from the coastal to offshore shelf of harbour porpoises with marked southern movement. Density of porpoises varied from 1.423 ind./km^2 (CV = 25.4%) in spring to 0.576 ind./km^2 (CV = 43.43%) in autumn. The density of common dolphins was also decreasing, from 0.391 ind./km^2 (CV = 36.84%) to 0.088 ind./km^2 (CV = 42.13%), which was more significant in offshore (0.031 ind./km^2 , CV = 58.04%) than in the coastal shelf (0.138 ind./km^2 , CV = 48.59%). Bottlenose dolphins had almost constant density in both seasons in the coastal shelf: 0.211 ind./km^2 (CV = 52.15%) and 0.187 ind./km^2 (CV = 52.13%) but a very low density in the offshore shelf in autumn: 0.042 ind./km^2 (CV = 71.07%). Large Whale Survey Biologist Integrated Statistics is looking for a Large Whale Biologist to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fishery Service (NMFS). The Northeast Fisheries Science Center The Large Whale Biologist assists in the collection and analysis of aerial and shipboard right whale survey data, including studying the distribution of right whales in relation to human activities and the impacts of those activities on right whale behavior, health, population dynamics, and ecology. The primary responsibilities of this position focus on conducting aerial surveys and working with the resulting data. *Duties* The Large Whale Biologist is engaged in these tasks: * Participating in aerial surveys for right whales. Flight crew responsibilities include visually scanning for whales from bubble windows, recording sightings data on custom computer software, and photographing whales for individual identification using a digital SLR camera with a telephoto lens. * Participating in small vessel and shipboard surveys for right whales, as needed. Shipboard duties include visually scanning for whales, photographing whales for individual identification, collecting biopsy samples from select individuals using crossbows, assisting with oceanographic and zooplankton sampling, and supporting unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations. * Managing survey and photographic data. Data processing duties include QA/QC of aerial and shipboard sightings and effort data, evaluating sightings relative to seasonal and dynamic management areas, accurate and timely completion of summary spreadsheets and survey reports, preliminary matching of right whale individual identification images, and maintenance of data processing programs and databases. * Supporting management needs. Duties include analyzing data and preparing presentations for stakeholder meetings, environmental impact statements, biological opinions, etc. Additional duties may include assisting with whale carcass relocation, supporting disentanglement efforts, assisting with whale necropsies, and helping prepare stock assessment reports. * Public outreach. Duties include assisting with Protected Species Branch website content and maintenance, and helping with public education and outreach activities. *Qualifications and Skills* * At least one full year of experience working on right whale or related aerial survey projects. * Familiarity with marine mammal visual survey data collection and processing methods, including use of spreadsheets and Google drives. * Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written (including visual presentations) with a variety of audiences including technical, scientific, and the general public. * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. * Strong project management skills. * Attention to detail. * Adaptability to quickly changing priorities and strict timelines. * US citizenship and ability to comply with EO 14042. Aircraft ditch training and small boat handling experience are desired but not required; however, ditch training will be required to conduct the work. SQL and R programming skills desired but not required. Familiarity with marine mammal acoustics desired but not required. This position is full-time for one year. The position requires fieldwork and travel. Some projects will require the Biologist to spend up to three weeks at a time at sea or away from home, including in Canada. Short note on Mediterranean rough-toothed dolphins

Dear Marmam, On behalf of my coauthors, I would like to share with you our recent short note on Mediterranean rough-toothed dolphins where we provide some new insights into their distribution and highlight one extreme case of ingestion of macroplastics that included squid-like plastic fishing lures. Link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0025326X23001327?dgcid=a… Abstract: Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) form an isolated subpopulation in the Mediterranean Sea that resides only in the eastern basin. Due to the paucity of records, the conservation threats these dolphins face and their ecology and distribution are poorly understood. While most observations indicate that individuals are found in two isolated clusters in the eastern basin, we hereby present five observations -three visual, one acoustic and one stranding- that possibly extend the range of this subpopulation to the entire offshore waters of the eastern basin. The stomach content remains of the stranded individual revealed a diet based on epipelagic squids and octopods. The stranded dolphin had also consumed seven plastic bags and nine squid-like plastic fishing lures, which had caused a complete gastric blockage and probably led to the stranding. High pollution loads from macroplastics in the Mediterranean Sea may evolve into a new potential threat for this subpopulation.
