The Shannon Dolphin Project (SDP) is offering several volunteer internships positions during the 2023 field season. The internship runs from May - September 2023 and the minimum duration for successful applicants is 10 weeks. *Background:* The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) is a registered charity and NGO in the West of Ireland. The group have been running the SDP photo ID catalogue since 1993, focused on monitoring Ireland’s only resident population of bottlenose dolphins. The internship is based in Kilrush, Co. Clare, Ireland. *Successful applicants will gain experience in:* Photo- ID techniques. Collecting and processing photo id data, matching images collected to the known Shannon Dolphin catalogue. Improving field skills and gaining at sea experience – dedicated dolphin surveys on IWDG’s own vessels, opportunistic surveying on tour boats. The internship will also include a one-week survey on the IWDG’s research vessel, Celtic Mist. Land watches from local headlands. Education and Outreach to the public in the visitor centre. Identifying bottlenose dolphin behaviours. Complete other tasks assigned by the project manager, such as responding to strandings. *Qualifications: *Applicants should have a Bsc. degree in biology, ecology, or marine science program. Previous data collection experience in a research setting and or/ knowledge of marine mammals are great advantages. While training will be provided and no prior boating/ DSLR camera experience is required, skills in photography and a clean driving licence are also an advantage. *Expenses and housing: *This is an unpaid internship. Successful applicants are responsible for their living expenses. However, the IWDG will help organise accommodation. New paper on estimating the effects of multiple stressors on the health, survival and reproduction of North Atlantic right whales

Estimating the effects of stressors on the health, survival and reproduction of a critically endangered, long-lived species. Oikos. Abstract: Quantifying the cumulative effects of stressors on individuals and populations can inform the development of effective management and conservation strategies. We developed a Bayesian state-space model to assess the effects of multiple stressors on individual survival and reproduction. In the model, stressor effects on vital rates are mediated by changes in underlying health, allowing for the comparison of effect sizes while accounting for intrinsic factors that might affect an individual’s vulnerability and resilience. We applied the model to a 50-year dataset of sightings, calving events, and stressor exposure of critically endangered North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis). The viability of this population is threatened by a complex set of stressors, including vessel strikes, entanglement in fishing gear and fluctuating prey availability. We estimated that blunt and deep vessel strike injuries and severe entanglement injuries had the largest effect on the health of exposed individuals, reinforcing the urgent need for mitigation measures. Prey abundance had a smaller but protracted effect on health across individuals, and estimated long-term trends in survival and reproduction followed the trend of the prey index, highlighting that long-term ecosystem-based management strategies are also required. Our approach can be applied to quantify the effects of multiple stressors on any long-lived species where suitable indicators of health and long-term monitoring data are available. JNCC-recognised MMO course for UK waters, 6 & 7 March 2023, remote delivery by Zoom. This course will cover all the information needed for work as a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) in UK waters. Taught by an instructor with over 25 years experience, the course content includes: 1) Impacts of noise on marine mammals 2) Introduction to activities that require mitigation 3) Legislation protecting marine mammals and marine licensing 4) Detailed examination of the JNCC guidelines for geophysical surveys, pile driving and explosives 5) Data recording and reporting requirements 6) Visual monitoring and distance estimation 7) Overview of passive acoustic monitoring 8) Working as an MMO/ PAM operator 9) Identification of marine mammals Zoom sessions will be a mixture of lectures and exercises, over 1.5 days. Any exercises not completed during the sessions can be completed in your own time. There is also an online multiple choice exam to be done at your convenience after the Zoom sessions (re-sits are possible if you don't pass first time). The cost of the course is £200 (200GBP) payable after the course (10% discount available for students or recent graduates). There is no cancellation fee. The course is limited to small numbers; each delegate gets individual feedback on their exercises and the exam. On successful completion of the course (including the exercises and exam) you will receive JNCC-recognised certification, which is required for work as an MMO or PAM operator in UK waters. Dear Colleagues We are very pleased to announce that we are taking applications for the fourth intake of our new MSc in Statistical Ecology detailed in the attached leaflet. The MSc aims to give students * a sound understanding of the statistical foundations of modern methods in statistical ecology * Knowledge and skills to use these methods effectively * experience of applying them to real-world problems, under the supervision of experts, some of whom are leading researchers in this field The Programme involves two semesters of taught courses and a 3-month summer research dissertation. It is taught by staff at the interdisciplinary Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (https://www.creem.st-andrews.ac.uk/) The summer dissertation includes optional placements with collaborators in the UK or abroad, to give students experience of dealing with real-world problems in statistical ecology. The University of St Andrews is home to the Centre for Research into Ecological & Environmental Modelling (CREEM) in Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU), and Scottish Oceans Initiative (SOI), providing many opportunities for networking including working on several summer projects focussed specifically on marine mammal which are matched to students' backgrounds and interests. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for summer 2023 Marine Mammal Stranding Internships. IFAW Marine Mammal Stranding Internship Summer Session 2023 (First Week of June, 2023 - Last Week of August, 2023) Complete Applications due: February 20th, 2023 Program Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 264 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. Stranding Intern Duties * Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data. * Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings. * Stranding / necropsy readiness: cleaning, organizing and maintaining stranding response and necropsy gear, equipment and facilities, restocking kits and supplies. * Data entry / sample processing: assist in entry of stranding data. The field portion of this course will take place on Bimini, a small island in The Bahamas around which groups of wild Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins frequent. When is the course? The online portion of this course includes a week before and a week after the field component, conducted through the Sacred Heart University blackboard system. The field portion of this course begins on 12 May 2023, in Bimini. Students depart Bimini on 19 May 2023. What does it cost and how do I apply? DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL

*BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 15tg April to 30th November 2023. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos. Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions. The field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be trained to: - Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; - Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; - Access and collect environmental data; - Collect data on behavior, group size, species, etc.; - Collect photos to photo-identification, acoustic recording, and underwater videos; - Measure water visibility with the Secchi disk methodology; - Help to collect of drone footage from the marine mammals; - Land base monitoring of marine mammals. *DATA ANALYSIS: *This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. This internship requires a monetary contribution which is used to off-set the cost of accommodation and running a non-profit. Internship opportunity in the Azores

The Nova Atlantis Foundation is preparing its 24rd fieldwork season, dedicated to studying the social ecology of the Risso´s dolphin around Pico island. Next to the continuation of the Risso project we will conduct cetacean monitoring surveys, focusing on the deep diving species such as pilot whales and beaked whales. Pico island is an excellent area to learn and gain experience at sea and to observe over 15 species of cetaceans during the summer season. Special attention will be given to acoustics research using a hydrophone array. We are seeking interns for the period June to Mid-August Candidates should be available for at least 2 months. Interns must be self-motivated, with the drive and determination to work independently and responsibly, and with a true interest in marine conservation and animal behaviour. The internship includes: - An intensive training on monitoring protocol, cetacean identification and data processing - Sea-surveys (using photo-ID, a drone and hydrophones) and land based data collection - Data processing - Additional work e.g. boat cleaning and preparation, maintenance of the research station The 2-month internship requires a payment to cover running field work costs. Expenses for travelling to and from the fieldwork site, accommodation and food are not included in this fee. The Nova Atlantis Foundation offers accommodation in collaboration with a local family in Santa Cruz das Ribeiras. Interns are free to find their own accommodation in Ribeiras as well. Fieldwork is highly weather dependent and requires consecutive long days of work at sea and from land. On a typical field day, we split the team in a land crew and a sea crew and work in shifts allowing all to rotate and gain experience in several methodologies. We use rough weather days for data entry or as a day off. Application deadline is the 25rst of February 2023.
