Training on whale, dolphin and sea turtle research in Nicaragua – Central America, closing date: 04/15/2023 for season 1 and 06/30/2023 for season 2 Dear MARMAM community, Association ELI-S is a small non-profit organization based in France that was created in 2013. Our organization aims at promoting, protecting and conserving cetaceans in Central America. We are running the Cetacean Conservation Project of Nicaragua since 2016. This pioneer project aims to generate knowledge on cetacean presence, population size, distribution and habitat use patterns. The expected output is to generate: 1) scientific data on whales, dolphins and sea turtles in Nicaragua to assess distribution and movement patterns, behaviours and, 2) environmental awareness to the local communities in order to create a socio-economic relevance in conserving and protecting their natural environment and 3) responsible eco-tourism by participating to beach clean-up. Association ELI-S is recruiting research assistants for field work, photo-identification and data entry between February and April (season 1) and August-September (season 2) 2023 in San Juan del Sur. new publication on the Mediterranean monk seal distribution inferred by a citizen-science based eDNA survey

Abstract Animal conservation relies on assessing the distribution and habitat use of species, but for endangered/elusive animals this can prove difficult. The Monk Seal, *Monachus monachus*, is one of the world’s most endangered species of pinniped, and the only one endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. During recent decades, direct observations have been few and scattered, making it difficult to determine its distribution away from the Aegean Sea (core distribution area of the post-decline relict population). This study relies on environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis to detect the presence of the Monk Seal in 135 samples collected in 120 locations of the central/western Mediterranean Sea, spanning about 1500 km longitudinally and 1000 km latitudinally. A recently described species-specific qPCR assay was used on marine-water samples, mostly collected during 2021 by a Citizen Science (CS) project. Positive detections occurred throughout the longitudinal range, including the westernmost surveyed area (Balearic archipelago). The distribution of the positive detections indicated six “hotspots”, mostly overlapping with historical Monk Seal sites, suggesting that habitat-specific characteristics play a fundamental role. We applied single-season occupancy models to correct for detection probability and to assess the importance of site-specific characteristics. The distance from small islets and protected (or access-restricted) areas was correlated negatively with the detection probability. This novel molecular approach, applied here for the first time in an extensive CS study, proved its potential as a tool for monitoring the distribution of this endangered/elusive species. Global Policy and Conservation of Marine Mammals (July 8-Aug 16) Location: Bali, Indonesia and Langkawi, Malaysia (taught through George Mason University Global Education Program) 6 credits (Environmental Science and Policy, or Biology and International Studies) (undergraduate or graduate) Application Deadline: March 10, 2023 Come learn about how to solve conservation issues related to endangered species, gaining firsthand experience in the field and networking with global experts. Focus will be on IUCN red listed endangered marine mammals (but lessons learned are applicable to all endangered species). From a home base in Bali, we will examine conservation issues in the classroom, covering for each species, laws available, stakeholders involved, and actions taken to date for each species. The class as a group will examine and discuss what is working and what is not, and will brainstorm to consider solutions. Insight from world experts (some local, some through Zoom) will inform students as well. Students will also get first-hand experience in the field studying local conservation issues which are global in nature (e.g., the positives and negatives of ecotourism), and will get the chance to discover how everything from culture to economics can play a role in conservation problems and solutions. Field based activities (in Bali and Langkawi) will give students experience learning more about marine mammals (not necessarily endangered), what is impacting them, and how to collect data to inform better management. These may include spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, humpback dolphins, sperm whales, dugongs, Bryde’s whales, irrawaddy dolphins and finless porpoises. Students walk away up to date on all marine mammals in crisis globally, and with significant experience in considering how to prevent their extinction. During off time (home base Bali), students can learn to surf on some of the best waves on the planet, dive pristine reefs, hike up volcanoes and explore incredible jungle forests. Not bad! • Anyone can take this course (you do not have to be a George Mason University student, or a university student) (given prerequisites involving some background in biological sciences). Costs cover tuition, all lodging (5 weeks), all ground transportation, all field trips on the water, RT airfare to Malaysia (trip during the class), breakfast though the whole trip and all meals when on the trip to Malaysia. All tuition charged will be at the Virginia in-state rate, no matter what the student’s situation (so even if out of state or international). Price for the trip is estimated to be $4300 (half is tuition cost). Airfare is not included to Bali, but prices will be in the low season (summer). Dr. Lewis will be working with students to help them learn how to get the best flight deals. Food and transport in Bali are low cost (average large meal at a nice place = 3USD, but you can easily find street food at much lower cost). Some scholarships are available. Including a grant to cover the cost of a first time passport for those that acquire one for the trip. Financial aid can also be applied to cover the costs including those with GI bill benefits. Dr. Lewis will also work with students to locate internships pre or post trip if desired, to make the flight across the world worth even more. It’s available in open access at the link below: https://doi.org/10.3389/frsen.2023.1106533 Abstract: Ocean gliders are quiet, buoyancy-driven, long-endurance, profiling autonomous platforms. Gliders therefore possess unique advantages as platforms for Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) of the marine environment. In this paper, we review available glider platforms and passive acoustic monitoring systems, and explore current and potential uses of passive acoustic monitoring-equipped gliders for the study of physical oceanography, biology, ecology and for regulatory purposes. We evaluate limiting factors for passive acoustic monitoring glider surveys, such as platform-generated and flow noise, weight, size and energy constraints, profiling ability and slow movement. Based on data from 34 passive acoustic monitoring glider missions, it was found that <13% of the time spent at sea was unsuitable for passive acoustic monitoring measurements, either because of surface communications or glider manoeuvre, leaving the remainder available for subsequent analysis. To facilitate the broader use of passive acoustic monitoring gliders, we document best practices and include workarounds for the typical challenges of a passive acoustic monitoring glider mission. Three research priorities are also identified to improve future passive acoustic monitoring glider observations: 1) Technological developments to improve sensor integration and preserve glider endurance; 2) improved sampling methods and statistical analysis techniques to perform population density estimation from passive acoustic monitoring glider observations; and 3) calibration of the passive acoustic monitoring glider to record absolute noise levels, for anthropogenic noise monitoring. New Publication on whistle characteristics of bottlenose dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea

An open access copy can be found here: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2023.1099576/full Abstract Bottlenose dolphins have a complex vocal repertoire that varies depending on behavioral context, social structure, group composition, and anthropogenic pressures. This current study describes the whistle characteristics of bottlenose dolphins for the first time in the South Adriatic Sea while assessing the potential differences between whistle characteristics of geographically separated dolphins within neighbouring waters of the North Ionian Sea. The results show that whistle characteristics were similar between Taranto Gulf (Italy) and Boka Bay (Montenegro), despite their spatial differences. The mean peak frequency was 10kHz for each study location while the mean minimum and maximum frequency ranged from 7 to 14kHz. The average duration of whistles was 500 milliseconds. These results share similarities with previous literature, although several studies reported slightly different mean peak frequencies, ranging up to 15kHz in the neighbouring waters of Croatia and Italy. Further, harmonics were produced and formed in 40% of the whistles in Taranto Gulf and 30% of the whistles in Boka Bay. A high incidence of harmonics has previously been associated with behavioral states (i.e., travelling) and with certain types of marine traffic (i.e., fishing vessels). Therefore, it is important to collect simultaneous data on the visual behavior of the focal group as well as document the type and density of marine traffic within the proximity of the dolphins to have an in-depth understanding of vocal behavior. Despite the similarities of whistle characteristics of Taranto and Boka Bay, the whistle contours showed notable variations. Upsweep whistles were the most regularly produced whistle type in each location, which coincides with previous studies in the Mediterranean Sea. However, the least produced whistle had a concave contour in Taranto and was flat in Boka Bay. Previous studies have confirmed that flat whistles account for the least produced whistle contour in the Mediterranean Basin. Examining the whistle characteristics and the variation in whistle contours provides an in-depth understanding of the behavioral complexity as well as its plasticity in the presence of pressure. Therefore, future studies need to include behavior, group composition, noise levels, and human presence to enable an effective understanding of variation in whistle characteristics of bottlenose dolphins. DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL

*BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 15tg April to 30th November 2023. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos. Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions. The field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. Registration is now open for TWM's 2023 hybrid Spring Marine Naturalist Training Program!

The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, WA, has been training marine naturalists since 1994. We are offering our 2023 marine naturalist training program (MNTP) spring session as a hybrid program. Dates for this session are: April 18-22 with virtual presentations and April 24 & 25 with optional in-person field trips. Our marine naturalist training course is an intensive 7-day overview of the natural history of the San Juan Islands and the marine waters of Washington and Southern British Columbia (known as the Salish Sea). These will be mostly full days, usually running from around 9:00 am-5:00 pm Pacific Time. This course includes an in-depth treatment of the ecology and conservation of local marine species, including cetaceans (especially Southern Resident killer whales), pinnipeds, mustelids, and marine invertebrates and birds. Not only will participants learn identification and biology of species but also about TWM's marine mammal research (San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network, Marine Mammals Sighting Network/Database, Be Whale Wise laws and guidelines and Soundwatch Boater Education Program, and collaboration in shore based observation/acoustic research at Lime Kiln Point State Park). Presentations will be given by highly trained local naturalists, environmental educators, and scientists. The upcoming spring session will be a dynamic, high-quality hybrid experience that leaves graduates qualified as a regional professional or volunteer naturalist after completing 10 practicum hours. Clock hours are available. For the virtual portion, presentations will be recordings and live Q & A sessions through the video platform, Whova. Hands-on learning and field identification will be emphasized during the in-person portion here on San Juan Island. The in-person component is completely optional at an additional price and will not affect certification. Field trips are only open to those who have completed a MNTP session. Field trips will include kayaking; a tour of The Whale Museum; bird watching; a tour of Friday Harbor Laboratories, and a west side field trip to San Juan County Conservation Land Bank properties and salmon habitat restoration sites, and Lime Kiln Point State Park, featuring a geology hike as well tours of the lighthouse. Passive Acoustic Monitoring Course - British Columbia (EDGEWISE ENVIRONMENTAL) LOCATION: Vancouver, BC (online and field practical) DATES: Feb 21 - March 7 The Edgewise Environmental Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Operator course is a comprehensive program that focuses on passive acoustic mitigation processes of marine environmental projects that may impact marine mammals. Offshore and coastal activities covered include, but are not limited to seismic exploration, renewable energy, dredging, and pile driving. These activities and associated mitigative actions shall be discussed in relation to the “Species at Risk Act” and “Statement of Canadian Practice with Respect to the Mitigation of Seismic Sound in the Marine Environment”. Greetings! The Duke University Marine Lab (DUML) is accepting enrollments for the summer Biology of Marine Mammals course in Beaufort, North Carolina. Students will receive a Duke University transcript upon successful completion of the course. This six-week field-intensive course will cover the biology and conservation of marine mammals. We will introduce you to the basic biology of various taxonomic groups, describe some of the research approaches used to study them, and conclude with a consideration of their conservation. Field work, laboratories and interactive activities will focus on topics including diving physiology, photographic identification methods, population biology, bioacoustics, biologging, and drone technology. We will also take advantage of opportunities to interact with local marine mammal experts with guest lectures, field trips, necropsies, and discussion panels, and through the creation of a DUML Marine Mammals podcast. The Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program in Texas, USA, is recruiting for two summer 2023 paid opportunities: Research Assistant - The Galveston Bay Foundation is seeking a part-time, temporary summer research assistant for the Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program. The Research Assistant will help with the collection, entry and analysis of bottlenose dolphin population data in Galveston Bay, Texas. The position will entail a combination of field and office work during May/June - August/September 2023 (16 weeks total). Marine mammal field research and photo-identification experience are required. Familiarity with ArcPro GIS, FinBase and R are highly desirable. Research Intern - The Environmental Institute of Houston is seeking a dedicated summer intern to assist with two grant funded research programs - The Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program and the Texas Clean Rivers Program. Work will entail the collection and management of water quality and bottlenose dolphin population data, in and around the Houston-Galveston region of Texas. The position consists of a combination of field and office work split between both programs during May/June - August/September 2023 (4-month commitment, start and end dates may be flexible). Previous wildlife management and/or marine mammal coursework, field and photo-identification, boat handling and water quality experience are highly desirable.
