New publication on rough-toothed dolphin diving behavior

Diel and lunar variation in diving behavior of rough-toothed dolphins (*Steno bredanensis*) off Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi. Mar Mam Sci. 2021;1–16. https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.12811 Abstract: Observational studies describe rough-toothed dolphins (*Steno bredanensis*) actively foraging during the day on epipelagic species. Using data from depth-transmitting satellite tags deployed on nine individuals off Kauaʻi, we investigated diving behavior and the effects of lunar phase and solar light levels on vertical movements. Overall, tagged rough-toothed dolphins primarily used near-surface waters, spend- ing between 83.6% and 93.7% of their time in the top 30 m of the water column. When diving, grand mean, median, and maximum dive depths were 76.9 m, 67.5 m, and 399.5 m, although individuals were in water with depths from approximately 700–1,450 m. Dive rates varied by time of day, being lowest during the day and at dawn and highest at dusk and night. Dives were deepest (M = 133.7 m, SD = 52.6 m, median = 106.5 m) and longest (M = 4.0 min, SD = 0.4 min, median = 4.0 min) at dusk, suggesting dolphins were taking advantage of prey rising to the surface in response to reduced light levels. Lunar phase indirectly affected diving, with deeper and longer dives occurring with increasing illumination. The variations in dive behavior across solar and lunar cycles indicate diving patterns shift based on the distribution of prey. Multi-sensor integration for an assessment of underwater radiated noise from common vessels in San Francisco Bay. Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0003963 There is growing evidence that smaller vessels not required to broadcast data via the Automatic Identification System (AIS) contribute significant noise in urbanized coastal areas. The Marine Monitor (M2), a vessel tracking system that integrates AIS data with data collected via marine radar and high-definition camera, was employed to track all vessel types (regardless of AIS data availability) in a region of San Francisco Bay (SFB) where high-speed ferry, recreational, and commercial shipping traffic are common. Using a co-located hydrophone, source levels (SL) associated with 565 unique vessel passages were calculated and resultant cumulative daily sound exposure levels across the study area were modeled. Despite large ships primarily having the greatest SLs, ferries and motorized recreational craft contributed noise to the largest area in two frequency bands of interest. The M2 provided data without the need for an on-site observer and enabled a systematic analysis of all relevant vessel types which showed that non-AIS vessels should not be excluded from consideration, especially in a highly urbanized estuary like SFB. This research provides an assessment of underwater radiated noise from all common vessel types in SFB suitable for informing habitat quality and threat evaluation for local cetacean species. Effects of sea-level rise and storm enhanced flooding on Pacific harbor seal habitat: a comparison of haul-out changes at the Russian and Eel River Estuaries. Aquatic Conservation https://doi.org/10.1002/aqc.3574 1. Patterns and changes in the distribution of coastal marine mammals can serve as indicators of environmental change which fill critical information gaps in coastal and marine environments. Coastal habitats are particularly vulnerable to the effects of near-term sea-level rise. 2. In California, Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) are a natural indicator species of coastal change due to their reliance on terrestrial habitats, abundance, distribution, and site fidelity. Pacific harbor seals are marine top predators that are easily observed while hauled out at terrestrial habitats which are essential for resting, pupping, and molting. 3. While increasing inundation from recent sea-level rise and storm driven flooding has changed the California coastline, little is known about the effect of future sea-level rise and increased storm frequency and strength on harbor seal haul-out availability and quality in California. 4. Harbor seal habitat was modeled at two sand bar-built estuaries under a series of likely sea-level rise and storm scenarios. The primary findings of these scenarios reveal that, over time, habitat at both estuaries decreased with increasing sea-level, and storm enhanced water levels contributed significantly to habitat flooding. These changes reflect pressures on coastal habitats that impact human and natural systems. Namibian Dolphin Project 2021 Internship

The Namibian Dolphin Project is an organization run by several independent scientists based in southern Africa. We are running two research internships between June and August 2021 in Walvis Bay, Namibia (Session 1: June 7th to July 11th; Session 2: July 17th to August 21st). We would like to invite students enrolled in marine biology, ecology and zoology degrees to attend. Interns will join an active research programme during an intensive period of field work aiming to tackle a number of research questions including long-term population monitoring (photo ID and static acoustic monitoring), behavioural acoustics of bottlenose dolphins (linking sounds to behaviours), behavioural and acoustic responses to anthropogenic activities and response to stranded cetaceans (refloatation/data collection). Our focal study species are a small population of common bottlenose dolphins, the endemic Heaviside’s dolphin, and humpback whales with additional data collection on right whales, sunfish (Mola mola), African Penguins, sea turtles, jackals and Cape fur seals. Internships are research focused with an emphasis on learning (and using) field skills in cetacean research such as photo-identification, bioacoustics, spatially explicit capture-recapture and behavioural data collection, as well as data management and team work. Predicting the Effect of Climate Change on Food Requirements of an Iconic Arctic Species* *The SMM Seminar Editor's Select Series highlights the latest and most exciting marine mammal science published in the Marine Mammal Science Journal. This is your chance to engage with marine mammal scientists, learn and ask questions from anywhere in the world. All are welcome.* *About this talk:* Climate change is rapidly altering the Arctic ecosystem, including dramatic decreases in the extent of summer ice. Scientists are trying to predict the effect of these environmental transformations on wildlife. This includes the Walrus, an iconic, ice-dependent species that relies on stable ice surfaces to rest and act as a base for foraging on nearby food beds. Mathematical bioenergetic models are a typical tool that scientists use to predict the food energy requirements of animals under different conditions, and several such models have been constructed for walruses. However, these models are only as accurate as the data that goes into them. This talk will describe several studies that measured the costs of resting in water and swimming in two juvenile walruses on loan to the Vancouver Aquarium. I will describe what it was like to work with these boisterous, large animals on a daily basis, the scientific challenges and opportunities they provided, and what the resulting data tells scientists about the costs of global warming on these animals. *About the Presenter:* Dr. David Rosen is Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. His current research primarily investigates the bioenergetics (energy requirements and expenditures) of marine mammals. Its focus is to understand the root causes of population changes by investigating the interactions between the physiology of individual animals and biotic and abiotic environmental changes. Our Virtual Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) course is accredited by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and run over two days to provide comprehensive coverage of the MMO role. A mixture of theory and practical virtual boat sessions are delivered by experienced trainers. Insight into life offshore and the practicalities of the MMO role ensure a very thorough preparation for prospective MMOs. However, those from an industry background (working alongside MMOs) will benefit from the full exploration of the complexities of mitigation requirements. A scientific background will be an advantage to delegates and a keen interest in marine mammals is key. Our well established Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) course is a three-day course that provides comprehensive PAM training for personnel new to the offshore industry.
