Namibian Dolphin Project Internship

The Namibian Dolphin Project is an organization run by several independent scientists based in southern Africa, and we are running a research internship in Walvis Bay, Namibia (June 7th to July 11th). This NDP Internship has been ongoing for close to a decade, and our program is proven to be a very rewarding experience. We would like to invite students enrolled in marine biology, ecology and zoology degrees to attend. Interns will join an active research programme during an intensive period of field work aiming to tackle a number of research questions including long-term population monitoring (photo ID and static acoustic monitoring), behavioural acoustics of bottlenose dolphins (linking sounds to behaviours), behavioural and acoustic responses to anthropogenic activities and response to stranded cetaceans (refloatation/data collection). Our focal study species are a small population of common bottlenose dolphins, the endemic Heaviside’s dolphin, and humpback whales with additional data collection on right whales, sunfish (Mola mola), African Penguins, sea turtles, jackals and Cape fur seals. Internships are research focused with an emphasis on learning (and using) field skills in cetacean research such as photo-identification, bioacoustics, spatially explicit capture-recapture and behavioural data collection, as well as data management and team work. New publication on Australian sea lion status and trends in abundance

Endangered Species Research. 44: 421-437 DOI: https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01118 https://www.int-res.com/articles/esr2021/44/n044p421.pdf ABSTRACT: Australian sea lions Neophoca cinerea are endemic to Australia, with their contemporary distribution restricted to South Australia (SA) and Western Australia (WA). Monitoring of the species has proved challenging due to prolonged breeding events that occur non-annually and asynchronously across their range. The most recent available data from 80 extant breeding sites (48 in SA, 32 in WA) enabled us to estimate the species-wide pup abundance to be 2739, with 82% (2246) in SA and 18% (493) in WA, mostly based on surveys conducted between 2014 and 2019. We evaluated 1776 individual site-surveys undertaken between 1970 and 2019 and identified admissible time-series data from 30 breeding sites, which revealed that pup abundance declined on average by 2.0% yr-1 (range 9.9% decline to 1.7% growth yr-1). The overall reduction in pup abundance over 3 generations (42.3 yr) was estimated to be 64%, with over 98% of Monte Carlo simulations producing a decline >50% over a 3-generation period, providing strong evidence that the species meets IUCN 'Endangered' criteria (decline ≥50% and ≤80%). The population is much smaller than previously estimated and is declining. There is a strong cline in regional abundances (increasing from west to east), with marked within-region heterogeneity in breeding site pup abundances and trends. Results from this study should improve consistency in the assessment of the species and create greater certainty among stakeholders about its conservation status. To facilitate species management and recovery, we prioritise key data gaps and identify factors to improve population monitoring. Postdoc Position to Map Global Whale-Ship Co-Occurrence (UW Seattle)

A postdoc position is available in the Abrahms lab at the University of Washington, Seattle to examine whale-ship interactions at a global scale. The initial appointment will be for one year with expectation of reappointment for a second year conditional on performance. The postdoc will be supervised by Dr. Briana Abrahms (abrahms(a)uw.edu) and work closely with project partners at The Nature Conservancy, Benioff Ocean Initiative, Global Fishing Watch, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Marine shipping poses one of the greatest threats to large whales. The goals of this project are to explore the intersection between large whales and marine shipping traffic and to identify global hotspots of overlap and collision risk. Deliverables of the project include: 1. Presenting and facilitating technical discussions at 1-2 workshops with project partners and data contributors 2. Creating gridded geographic range maps (e.g. kernel densities, utilization distributions, or species distribution models) using compiled whale presence data 3. Creating whale-ship co-occurrence maps and conducting a hotspot analysis 4. Víkingsson Abstract Biodiversity in the oceans has dramatically declined since the beginning of the indus-trial era, with accelerated loss of marine biodiversity impairing the ocean's capacity to maintain vital ecosystem services. A few organisms epitomize the damaging and long-lasting effects of anthropogenic exploitation: Some whale species, for instance, were brought to the brink of extinction, with their population sizes reduced to such low levels that may have caused a significant disruption to their reproductive dynam-ics and facilitated hybridization events. The incidence of hybridization is neverthe-less believed to be rare, and very little information exists on its directionality. Here, using genetic markers, we show that all but one whale hybrid sample collected in Icelandic waters originated from the successful mating of male fin whale and female blue whale, thus suggesting unidirectional hybridization. We also demonstrate for the first time the existence of a second-generation adult (male) hybrid resulting from a backcross between a female hybrid and a pure male fin whale. New publication on cetacean occurrence in the Gulf of Alaska

Dear MARMAM community, My coauthors and I are pleased to announce the open-access publication of our paper, "Cetacean occurrence in the Gulf of Alaska from long-term passive acoustic monitoring" in *Marine Biology*. Abstract: The Gulf of Alaska is an important habitat for a diverse array of marine mammals, many of which were severely depleted by historical whaling. To study current cetacean distributions in this region, passive acoustic monitoring was used to detect species-specific call types between 2011 and 2015 at five locations spanning the continental shelf, slope, and offshore seamounts. Spatial and temporal detection patterns were examined for nine species to compare differences in behavior and habitat use. Mysticetes showed seasonal increases in calling that indicated possible behavioral shifts between feeding and breeding in blue (*Balaenoptera musculus*), fin (*B. physalus*), and humpback (*Megaptera novaeangliae*) whales, and matched known migration timing of gray whales (*Eschrichtius robustus*). Interannual changes in blue and fin whale calling may relate to the marine heat wave that began in 2013 and lasted through the end of the monitoring period. Odontocete detections revealed unique spatial distributions, with killer whales (*Orcinus orca*) most common on the continental shelf and sperm whales (*Physeter macrocephalus*) most common on the continental slope, where detections occurred year-round. Beaked whales showed both spatial and temporal separation: Baird’s beaked whale (*Berardius bairdii*) detections were highest at Quinn Seamount in the spring, Cuvier’s (*Ziphius cavirostris*) at Pratt Seamount in winter, and Stejneger’s (*Mesoplodon stejnegeri*) on the continental slope in the fall. The year-round presence of many species highlights the ecological importance of the Gulf of Alaska and the spatiotemporal information reported here should inform future conservation efforts. New publication: Weddell seal behaviour during an exceptional oceanographic event in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 2017 Dear colleagues, On behalf of all the co-authors, we are happy to inform you on the publication of our new article: Weddell seal behaviour during an exceptional oceanographic event in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 2017 Abstract Rapid and regionally contrasting climate changes have been observed around Antarctica. However, our understanding of the impact of these changes on ecosystems remains limited, and there is an urgent need to better identify habitats of Antarctic species. The Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) is a circumpolar mesopredator and an indicative species of Antarctic marine communities. It has been extensively studied in the western Ross Sea and East Antarctica, and an understanding of its ecology in the Weddell Sea in the wintertime is emerging. We documented the behavioural response(s) of four Weddell seals from February to June in 2017 in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf region and related these to unusual oceanographic conditions in 2017. Unexpectedly, we found that Weddell seals had the longest foraging effort within the outflow of Ice Shelf Water or at its turbulent boundary. They also foraged on the eastern side of the trough from April to June within the Modified Warm Deep Water and seem to take advantage of the unusual conditions of persistent inflow of warm waters through the winter. Linking animal behavioural responses to oceanographic conditions is informative for quantifying rarely recorded events and provides great insight into how predators may respond to changing conditions. Historical study - sperm whaling to the north of Australia and Indonesian and New Guinea Waters

Hello everyone - a link to a Paper presenting findings from a now thirty plus year study of log books, journals and other sources documenting traditional British and American sperm whaling in the 1800s to the north of Australia, Indonesia and in New Guinea waters. The dataset comprises 850 British sightings extracted from the logs of 13 British whaling voyages covering the period 1820 to 1850 (collected by the author) and 481 American sightings (1833 to 1873) drawn from 50 logs abstracted in the American Offshore Whaling Logbook database hosted on Whaling History. Sightings include strikes and captures and in the great majority are sightings of more than one sperm whale. The study finds that from 1804, British whaleships utilised the port of Kupang on South-West Timor as a major service port to support extensive sperm whaling activities across Indonesian waters. During the next 50 years at least one in five British whaling voyages (over 300) undertook whaling in the defined area. The study also finds that vessels from the American Whaling Fleet were present but did not practice deployment strategies similar to the British. We hypothesized that changes in the timing of migration off central California were driven by local oceanography, regional upwelling, and basin-scale climate conditions. Using 24 years of daily whale counts collected from Southeast Farallon Island, we developed negative binomial regression models to evaluate trends in local whale sightings over time. We then used linear models to assess trends in the timing of migration, and to identify potential environmental drivers. These drivers included local, regional and basin-scale patterns; the latter included the El Niño Southern Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation, which influence, wind-driven upwelling, and overall productivity in the California Current System. We then created a forecast model to predict the timing of migration. Humpback whale sightings significantly increased over the study period, but blue and gray whale counts did not, though there was variability across the time series. Date of breeding migration (departure) for all species showed little to no change, whereas date of migration towards feeding areas (arrival) occurred earlier for humpback and blue whales. Timing was significantly influenced by a mix of local oceanography, regional, and basin-scale climate variables. Earlier arrival time without concomitant earlier departure time results in longer periods when blue and humpback whales are at risk of entanglement in the Gulf of the Farallones. We maintain that these changes have increased whale exposure to pot and trap fishery gear off the central California coast during the spring, elevating the risk of entanglements. Humpback entanglement rates were significantly associated with increased counts and early arrival in central California. Actions to decrease the temporal overlap between whales and pot/trap fishing gear, particularly when whales arrive earlier in warm water years, would likely decrease the risk of entanglements. We are writing to you within the realms of the ACCURATE project - ACoustic CUe RATEs for passive acoustics density estimation. ACCURATE is a 5 year project supported by the US Navy's Living Marine Resources program (https://www.navfac.navy.mil/navfac_worldwide/specialty_centers/exwc/product…) with the purpose of learning about acoustic cue production rates to inform passive acoustic density estimation. The project does not include dedicated data collection and therefore relies on multiple data providers. Several data providers have been identified and are already feeding us data.
