*DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmental friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor, hiking, kayaking, surf classes and others. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 1st of July to 30st November 2021. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos. Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions. The field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be trained to: - Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; - Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; - Access and collect environmental data; - Collect data on behavior, group size, species, etc.; - Collect photos to photo-identification, acoustic recording, and underwater videos; - Measure water visibility with the Secchi disk methodology; - Help to collect of drone footage from the marine mammals. *DATA ANALYSIS: *This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. This internship requires a monetary contribution which is used to off-set the cost of accommodation and running a non-profit. Currently we have a special offer, 20% discount, for any internship program book in May 2021. Bowheads live near the polar ice edge for much of the year and although sea ice dynamics are not the only driver of their annual migratory movements, it likely plays a key role. Given the intrinsic variability of open water and ice, one might expect bowhead migratory plasticity to be high and linked to this proximate environmental factor. Here, through a network of underwater passive acoustic recorders, we document the first known occurrence of bowheads overwintering in what is normally their summer foraging grounds in the Amundsen Gulf and eastern Beaufort Sea. The underlying question is whether this is the leading edge of a phenological shift in a species' migratory behaviour in an environment undergoing dramatic shifts due to climate change. Senior Environmental Reporting Scientist: As a Senior Reporting Scientist, you will be responsible for the analysis, interpretation and presentation of marine environmental data in reports for our clients. You will work closely with the Client Report Managers, Project Managers and Field Scientists to ensure the production and delivery of quality, accurate reports, to agreed client specifications, often within tight timescales. You will need to communicate and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders across the Gardline group of companies. You will also play an active involvement in the mentoring of Reporting Scientists, delivery of training to other staff in your discipline area, provision of leadership in complex projects and development of survey deliverables. The successful candidate should be of degree calibre with three years of industry experience or less if in possession of a Master's degree or PhD in a relevant subject. The candidate will demonstrate a sound knowledge of the marine environment with both a scientific and commercial awareness. The successful candidate will possess excellent organisational, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills. It is essential that they have good problem solving skills and the ability to communicate complex science at public and technical levels. new review of Caribbean (SVG) whaling

Dear MARMAM list members, My coauthor, Jeremy Kiszka, and I are happy to share with you our recent publication that reviews the literature on whaling in St. Vincent & the Grenadines and discusses some needs for future research and management policy. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the ongoing crisis in St. Vincent (which is also affecting neighboring Barbados) related to the eruption of the Soufrière volcano. It is our sincere hope that this natural disaster will come to an end without loss of life and with only minimal damage to property and livelihoods. We would ask that those who read this paper also keep those affected by the volcano in their thoughts. Here is the paper's abstract: Whaling has been a contentious international environmental issue for decades and carries complex ecological and socioeconomic implications. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), a small archipelagic nation located in the Eastern Caribbean, present-day whaling traces its origin to local interaction with American-based whalers during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. When American whaling in the region ceased, local shore-based whaling arose to fill the niche and to exploit the remaining, though diminished, stocks of large whales, as well as stocks of small cetaceans that the American whalers had not targeted as heavily. After a period of expansion throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which saw shore-whaling operations established on at least 11 islands in the region, Eastern Caribbean whaling experienced a period of attrition, during which most local whaling operations ceased. Two operations, both based in SVG, continue regularly today. This paper reviews the past and present status of whaling activities in SVG from the literature and using recent data collected from 2007 to 2017 through logbook data, interview surveys, and ethnographic observations. Small cetacean captures have been documented since 1949, and at least 15 species of odontocetes have been captured (primarily delphinids). From 1949 to 2017, a total of 13,856 small cetacean captures has been recorded, including 5,896 short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), 109 killer whales (Orcinus orca), and 7,851 other small cetaceans. Small cetacean catch records are largely incomplete and total catch estimates could not be attempted. Reliable abundance estimates do not exist. Consistent records for the take of large whales are only available for the period 1986–2020, during which 45 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and 2 Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera edeni) were taken. Additionally, 8 sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) captures were reported from 1967 and 1974. We also review whaling practices, existing national policy on whaling, management techniques outside of formal policy regimes, research needs, and future management perspectives. Future monitoring and management of whaling activities in SVG are strongly needed to assess the sustainability of small cetacean exploitation. Discussion on usefulness of collecting data on boat from aerial survey, what type of use ?

Dear colleagues, I am a french researcher on marine mammals in the Mediterranean Seaworking since twenty-five years on abundance, distribution and mapping high-risk areas (http://www.ecoocean-institut.org) I am also the vice-chair of the Scientific Committee of the Regional Sea Convention for the Conservation of cetacean in that area : ACCOBAMS. ACCOBAMS organised in 2018 a large synoptic aerial survey over almost the entire Mediterranean Sea (https://accobams.org/main-activites/accobams-survey-initiative-2/asi-prelim… <https://accobams.org/main-activites/accobams-survey-initiative-2/asi-prelim…>). Data collected concerned cetaceans, seabirds, megafauna and also human activities (marine litter and boat). In few weeks, a workshop dedicated on the results, the lessons learned and the use of such large event to improve the conservation of cetaceans will occur. Considering the collection of data on boats from aerial survey, two major objectives lead that choice : mapping pressure in parallel with animals and getting clue for any attractive/repellent possible effects on animals. I am in charge of evaluating the usefulness of such collection of data on this group from aerial survey. I wanted to illustrate with existing works and based on literature review, discuss some points considering protocols and type of analysis, but found very few literatures on this specific subject on Internet, Google Scholar nor Research gate… Therefore I am writing a message here, looking for reports/articles of studies around the world having collected data on boats sightings during aerial survey and would like to know what has been the use of such data (type of analysis). It would be very useful if those of you leading aerial surveys and collecting data on boats could share their experience and reports/articles with us considering protocols, analysis of data and use of the results for conservation purpose. It seems obvious that collecting data on boat equipped with AIS is not useful, as the AIS source of data will be much more exhaustive for mapping the pressure. The question still remains considering other boats (leisure, fishing...). As it seems interesting to collect data at sea, still I question if any of you have reallly used those data or see the limitations of them to achieve the objectives. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for fall 2021 Marine Mammal Stranding Internships. IFAW Marine Mammal Stranding Internship Fall Session 2021 (First Week of September, 2021 - Middle of January, 2022) Complete Applications due: May 15th, 2021 Program Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 261 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. Stranding Intern Duties * Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data. * Marine mammal stranding response and necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings. * Stranding / necropsy readiness: cleaning, organizing and maintaining stranding response and necropsy gear, equipment and facilities, restocking kits and supplies. * Data entry / sample processing: assist in entry of stranding data. Assist in organizing, cataloging, disseminating and archiving of photos, videos, datasheets, samples, etc. * Outreach: assist staff with training and outreach material preparation and organization, participate in opportunistic outreach at stranding sites, participate in community events.
