Dear Colleagues, On behalf of myself and my co-authors, we are excited to share the following paper: Behavioral observations and stable isotopes reveal high individual variation and little seasonal variation in sea otter diets in Southeast Alaska Nicole LaRoche, Sydney King, Matthew Rogers, Ginny Eckert, and Heidi Pearson ABSTRACT Two complementary approaches were used to assess year-round variation in the diet of sea otters Enhydra lutris around Prince of Wales Island (POW) in southern Southeast Alaska, a region characterized by mixed-bottom habitat. We observed sea otters foraging to determine diet composition during the spring and summer. Then, we obtained sea otter vibrissae, which record temporal foraging patterns as they grow, from subsistence hunters to identify year-round changes in sea otter diets via stable isotope analysis of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). We compared the stable isotopes from sea otter vibrissae and sea otter prey items that were collected during spring, summer, and winter. Overall, year-round sea otter diet estimates from stable isotope signatures and visual observations from spring and summer were dominated by clams in terms of biomass, with butter clams Saxidomus gigantea the most common clam species seen during visual observations. Our results indicate that these sea otters, when considered together at a regional level around POW, do not exhibit shifts in the main prey source by season or location. However, sea otter diets identified by stable isotopes had a strong individual-level variation. Behavioral variation among individual sea otters may be a primary driving factor in diet composition. This study provides quantitative diet composition data for modeling predictions of invertebrate population estimates that may aid in the future management of shellfisheries and subsistence hunting and the development of co-management strategies for this protected species. This paper shows the prevalence of herpesvirus infection (80.85%) in 47 ce-taceans stranded on the coast of the Valencian Community, Spain. Of the 966 tissues evaluated, 121 tested positive when employing nested-PCR (12.53%). The largest proportion of herpesvi-rus-positive tissue samples was in the reproductive system, nervous system and tegument. Herpesvirus was more prevalent in females, juveniles and calves. More than half the DNA PCR positive tissues contained herpesvirus RNA, indicating the presence of actively replicating virus. This RNA was most frequently found in neonates. Fourteen unique sequences were identi-fied. Most amplified sequences belonged to the Gammaherpesvirinae subfamily, but a greater variation was found in Alphaherpesvirinae sequences. This is the first report of systematic herpesvirus DNA and RNA determination in free-ranging cetaceans. Nine (19.14%) were in-fected with cetacean morbillivirus and all of them (100%) were coinfected with herpesvirus. Lesions similar to those caused by herpesvirus in other species were observed, mainly in the skin, upper digestive tract, genitalia and central nervous system. Other lesions were also at-tributable to concomitant etiologies or were nonspecific. Environmental impact studies <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/environme…> were carried out from March 2010 to July 2015 as part of the licensing process concerning the Jirau Hydroelectric Dam construction, located on the Madeira River, Rondônia, Brazil, aiming to assess its impacts on the local fauna. The dam closed its gates in December 2012 and the water level rose from 2013 to 2015, creating a 468 km2 reservoir. Dams may be a source of negative effects to several species, including the Bolivian river dolphin, /Inia <https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/i…> boliviensis/, which have a restricted distribution in northern Bolivian rivers and part of the Madeira River Basin. This study evaluated the presence of /I. boliviensis/ in different sections of the Madeira River before reservoir filling (BRF) and after reservoir filling (ARF) through a quantitative analysis. Dolphins were actively searched along linear transects in four sections of the river: Abunã, Mutum, Caiçara and Canteiro, over 125 km (250 km round trip). A total effort of 986 h was carried out along 210 days during the hydrological seasons (falling, low, rising and high-water level). Twenty-nine (29) groups were recorded BRF in the direct dam influence area (N = 62), while thirty-eight (38) groups were documented ARF (N = 111). The highest number of sightings was recorded in Abunã during both periods: 24 in BRF (N = 50) and 33 in ARF (N = 101). The greatest number of dolphins was detected during the falling and low hydrological seasons: 19 in BRF (N = 48) and 30 in ARF (N = 92). This is expected, since decreasing water levels lead to a higher concentration of prey and, consequently, higher numbers of dolphins can be observed. Standardized methodology and experienced staff are essential to ensure adequate dolphin population estimates, especially in these critical habitats, where the main impacts caused by the dam are population fragmentation, isolation and extirpation, and reproductive segregation.

New Publication: Echolocating toothed whales use ultra-fast echo-kinetic responses to track evasive prey

Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to share our new paper published in eLife this week, showing that echolocating whales can detect and react to sudden prey movements during close approaches with speeds similar to ultra-fast eye-tracking responses in human vision. We conclude that this evolutionary convergence on rapid sensor-motor feedback, coupled with extreme biosonar sampling rates, has critically enabled toothed whales to target agile, energetically-valuable prey cementing their position as top-predators in aquatic niches. Most toothed whales, however, rely on echolocation for hunting and have converged on biosonar clicking rates reaching 500/s during prey pursuits. If echoes are processed on a click-by-click basis, as assumed, neural responses 100× faster than those in vision are required to keep pace with this information flow. Using high-resolution biologging of wild predator-prey interactions, we show that toothed whales adjust clicking rates to track prey movement within 50-200 ms of prey escape responses. Hypothesising that these stereotyped biosonar adjustments are elicited by sudden prey accelerations, we measured echo-kinetic responses from trained harbour porpoises to a moving target and found similar latencies. High biosonar sampling rates are, therefore, not supported by extreme speeds of neural processing and muscular responses. Instead, the neurokinetic response times in echolocation are similar to those of tracking responses in vision, suggesting a common neural underpinning. Beaked whales (ziphiids) are among the most visible inhabitants of the deep sea, due to their large size and worldwide distribution, and their taxonomic diversity and much about their natural history remain poorly understood. We combine genomic and morphometric analyses to reveal a new Southern Hemisphere ziphiid species, Ramari’s beaked whale, Mesoplodon eueu, whose name is linked to the Indigenous peoples of the lands from which the species holotype and paratypes were recovered. Mitogenome and ddRAD- derived phylogenies demonstrate reciprocally monophy- letic divergence between M. eueu and True’s beaked whale (M. mirus) from the North Atlantic, with which it was previously subsumed. Morphometric analyses of skulls also distinguish the two species. A time-calibrated mitogenome phylogeny and analysis of two nuclear gen- omes indicate divergence began circa 2 million years ago (Ma), with geneflow ceasing 0.35–0.55Ma. This is an example of how deep sea biodiversity can be unravelled through increasing international collaboration and genome sequencing of archival specimens. Our consul- tation and involvement with Indigenous peoples offers a model for broadening the cultural scope of the scientific naming process. Combinamos el análisis genómico y morfométrico para revelar una nueva especie de zifio en el hemisferio sur: el zifio de Ramari, Mesoplodon eueu, cuyo nombre está vinculado a los indígenas de las tierras de las que provienen el holotipo y los paratipos. The acoustic channel is an important modality used by birds and mammals to reliably exchange information among individuals. In group-living species, the propagation of vocal signals is limited due to the density of individuals and the background noise. Vocal exchanges are, therefore, challenging. This study is the first investigation into the acoustic communication system of the Cape fur seal (CFS), one of the most colonial mammals with breeding colonies of hundreds of thousands of individuals. We described the acoustic features and social function of five in-air call types from data collected at two colonies. Intra-species variations in these vocalizations highlight a potential ability to convey information about the age and/or sex of the emitter. Using two classification methods, we found that the five call types have distinguishable frequency features and occupy distinct acoustic niches indicating acoustic partitioning in the repertoire. The CFS vocalizations appear to contain characteristics advantageous for discrimination among individuals, which could enhance social interactions in their noisy and confusing acoustic environment. Environmental Research, 112124. Abstract Marine species from the Gulf of Mexico often have higher mercury (Hg) concentrations than conspecifics in the Atlantic Ocean. Spatial differences in Hg sources, environmental conditions, and microbial communities influence both Hg methylation rates and the bioavailability of Hg to organisms at the base of the food web. Mercury bioaccumulates within organisms and biomagnifies in marine food webs, and therefore reaches the greatest concentrations in long-lived marine carnivores, such as dolphins. In this study, we explored whether differences in trophic position and foraging habitat among bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) contributed to the observed variation in skin total Hg (THg) concentrations. Using the δ13C and δ34S values in dolphin skin, we assigned deceased stranded dolphins from Florida (FL; n = 29) and Louisiana (LA; n = 72) to habitats (estuarine, barrier island, and coastal) east and west of the Mississippi River Delta (MRD). We estimated the mean trophic position of dolphins from each habitat using δ15N values from stranded dolphin skin and tissues of primary consumers taken from the literature following a Bayesian framework. Finally, we compared trophic positions and THg concentrations among dolphins from each habitat, accounting for sex and body length. Estimated marginal mean THg concentrations (μg/g dry weight) were greatest in dolphins assigned to the coastal habitat and estuarine habitats east of the MRD (range: 2.59–4.81), and lowest in dolphins assigned to estuarine and barrier island habitats west of the MRD (range: 0.675–0.993). On average, dolphins from habitats with greater THg concentrations also had higher estimated trophic positions, except for coastal dolphins. Our results suggest that differences in trophic positions and foraging habitats contribute to spatial variability in skin THg concentrations among nGoM bottlenose dolphins, however, the relative influence of these factors on THg concentrations are not easily partitioned. WWF Conservation Impact Grants: Funding available for Innovative projects to reduce bycatch risks for cetaceans

Hi everyone, In 2020, in response to growing cumulative impacts to cetaceans worldwide, WWF launched the Protecting Whales and Dolphins Initiative – a global conservation programme to equip experts, industry, policymakers and governments with tools and solutions to safeguard cetaceans for future generations. To help boost these efforts, we are inviting individuals, organisations and institutes to submit their best conservation project ideas to inform a policy action or management outcome to mitigate bycatch of cetaceans. Outputs from projects can include helping to develop new policy, advocacy, inclusive conservation, and/or contribute to local capacity building. Globally, an estimated 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises are killed each year as a result of fisheries bycatch. This year, a total of A$100,000 is available with a series of grants ranging from A$10,000 up to A$40,000 (Australian dollars). Our main goal is to help contribute to achieving IMPACT. Tell us how your project will make a difference and how we can work together to communicate it to the public and policymakers. Funding can contribute a range of projects including testing new ideas or long-term studies. Previous funding by the Initiative has been awarded a range of activities including providing field equipment such as satellite tags and drones for conservation science projects, analysis to identify critical habitats, working with local communities on co-developing solutions to mitigate bycatch for small cetaceans and help inform major marine protect area proposals. This position is an hourly contractual position for 5 months with the possibility of extension dependent upon successful performance and funding availability. Duties will include verifying automated detections of whale calls, working within a research team, analysis of acoustic data to compare detections with previously collected data, and writing reports and manuscripts.
