Dear colleagues, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce our recent publication "Frozen verses: Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) call predominantly during austral winter" in Royal Society Open Science. https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.192112 Abstract The recent identification of the bio-duck call as Antarctic minke whale (AMW) vocalization allows the use of passive acoustic monitoring to retrospectively investigate year-round spatial-temporal patterns in minke whale occurrence in ice-covered areas. Here, we present an analysis of AMW occurrence patterns based on a 9-year passive acoustic dataset (2008-2016) from 21 locations throughout the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (Weddell Sea). AMWs were detected acoustically at all mooring locations from May to December, with the highest presence between August and November (bio-duck calls present at more than 80% of days). At the southernmost recording locations, the bio-duck call was present up to 10 months of the year. Substantial inter-annual variation in the seasonality of vocal activity correlated to variation in local ice concentration. Our analysis indicates that part of the AMW population stays in the Weddell Sea during austral winter. The period with the highest acoustic presence in the Weddell Sea (September-October) coincides with the timing of the breeding season of AMW in lower latitudes. The bio-duck call could therefore play a role in mating, although other behavioural functions of the call cannot be excluded to date. New paper on song culture in birds and whales

Dear colleagues, My co-author and I are pleased to announce our recent publication in Frontiers in Psychology: Garland EC and McGregor PK (2020) Cultural Transmission, Evolution, and Revolution in Vocal Displays: Insights From Bird and Whale Song. Front. Psychol. 11:544929. doi:10.3389/fpsyg.2020.544929 ABSTRACT Culture, defined as shared behavior or information within a community acquired through some form of social learning from conspecifics, is now suggested to act as a second inheritance system. Cultural processes are important in a wide variety of vertebrate species. Birdsong provides a classic example of cultural processes: cultural transmission, where changes in a shared song are learned from surrounding conspecifics, and cultural evolution, where the patterns of songs change through time. This form of cultural transmission of information has features that are different in speed and form from genetic transmission. More recently, culture, vocal traditions, and an extreme form of song evolution have been documented in cetaceans. Humpback whale song “revolutions,” where the single population wide shared song type is rapidly replaced by a new, novel song type introduced from a neighboring population, represents an extraordinary example of ocean basin-wide cultural transmission rivaled in its geographic extent only by humans. In this review, we examine the cultural evolutions and revolutions present in some birdsong and whale song, respectively. By taking a comparative approach to these cultural processes, we review the existing evidence to understand the similarities and differences for their patterns of expression and the underlying drivers, including anthropogenic influences, which may shape them. Finally, we encourage future studies to explore the role of innovation vs. production errors in song evolution, the fitness information present in song, and how human-induced changes in population sizes, trajectories, and migratory connections facilitating cultural transmission may be driving song revolutions. New paper on killer whale call repertoires in the Northeast Atlantic

Marine Mammal Science https://doi.org/10.1111/mms.12750 Abstract Killer whale call repertoires can provide information on social connections among groups and populations. Killer whales in Iceland and Norway exhibit similar ecology and behavior, are genetically related, and are presumed to have been in contact before the collapse of the Atlanto-Scandian herring stock in the 1960s. However, photo-identification suggests no recent movements between Iceland and Nor- way but regular movement between Iceland and Shetland. Acoustic recordings collected between 2005 and 2016 in Iceland, Norway, and Shetland were used to undertake a comprehensive comparison of call repertoires of Northeast Atlantic killer whales. Measurements of time and frequency parameters of calls from Iceland (n = 4,037) and Norway (n = 1,715) largely overlapped in distribution, and a discrimi- nant function analysis had low correct classification rate. No call type matches were confirmed between Iceland and Norway or Shetland and Norway. Three call types matched between Iceland and Shetland. Therefore, this study sug- gests overall similarities in time and frequency parameters but some divergence in call type repertoires. This argues against presumed past contact between Icelandic and Nor- wegian killer whales and suggests that they may not have been one completely mixed population. Evolution and diversification of delphinid skull shapes

Dear MARMAMers, On behalf of the author team, I am pleased to share our recent paper ‘Evolution and diversification of delphinid skull shapes’ by A Galatius, R Racicot, M McGowen and MT Olsen in iScience, where we model delphinid skull shape evolution and look into the selective pressures that have shaped the diversity we see today. The paper can be accessed at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2589004220307355 Abstract: The diversity of the dolphin family was established during a short window of time. We investigated delphinid skull shape evolution, mapping shapes on an up-to-date nuclear phylogeny. In this model, the common ancestor was similar to Lagenorhynchus albirostris. Initial diversification occurred in three directions: toward specialized raptorial feeders of small prey with longer, narrower beaks, e.g., Delphinus; toward wider skulls with downward-oriented rostra and reduced temporal fossae, exemplified by suction feeders, e.g., Globicephala; and toward shorter and wider skulls/rostra and enlarged temporal fossae, e.g., Orcinus. Skull shape diversity was established early, the greatest later developments being adaptation of Steno to raptorial feeding on large prey and the convergence of Pseudorca toward Orcinus, related to handling large prey. Delphinid skull shapes are related to feeding mode and prey size, whereas adaptation to habitat is not marked. Over a short period, delphinid skulls have evolved a diversity eclipsing other extant odontocete clades. I am available for any questions! Best regards, Anders

Dear MARMAM colleagues, I hope everyone is safe and healthy, My co-authors and I are pleased to share with you of our recent paper which has just been published on Marine Mammal Science "Age estimation and growth layer patterns in teeth of crabeater seals: A comparison of techniques" by Cebuhar J, Negrete J, Botta S. Abstract: Age estimation of marine mammals provides important information about ecological and life-history parameters. Counting growth layer groups (GLGs) in the dentine and cementum of teeth is the most common technique for age estimation in pinnipeds. In this study, we used acid-etched canines (n = 38) and decalcified stained postcanine sections (n = 40) to calibrate readings in mummified crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophaga). A subsample of this group received a prior cleaning treatment of boiling the teeth with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Ages ranged from 0 to 31 years. Dentine from canines and cementum from postcanines showed higher estimated ages (maximum 31 years) than dentine from postcanines (maximum 24 years), mainly in those teeth that did not receive prior treatment. Boiling with H2O2 has shown to affect cementum structure and, thus, results in underestimated ages, but dentine did not seem to be affected. The results presented here showed that ages can be estimated for the crabeater seal regardless of which tooth/tissue or method is used, at least for seals <13 years old. However, nontreated, stained thin sections of postcanine teeth are recommended because more reliable age estimations in older crabeater seals are obtained. Updated info on the interactions between killer whales and sailing boats in the Iberian Peninsula

Dear all, Since July, thirty-three interactions of killer whales with sailing boats have been registered: six in the Strait of Gibraltar, then five on the Portuguese coast and finally twenty-two since mid-August, in Galicia, northern Spain. The boats that were targeted by the killer whales during the interactions were later inspected to better understand how the interactions occurred and what type of contacts took place. The interactions were mostly limited to the rudder of the boat, with marks found on the hull or signs of physical contact of the animals with the structure of the vessel. Only 15% of the encounters with the killer whales were classified as interactions which resulted in some kind of damage to the sailboats. In any of the interactions, people were never endangered by the direct activity of the killer whales. However, there were some risky situations during night-time and long-lasting interactions, due to abrupt movement of the steering wheel or turns of the boat, which caused distress to the crew members due to their lack of experience with killer whales and their behaviour. *International Working GroupA Group of Experts thoroughly investigates the trail of orca interactions* An international Working Group (WG) of cetacean experts and competent administrations has been set up, with great knowledge of the casuistry and behaviour of orcas. The WG has been analysing each and all cases in great detail and is in permanent contact with SOS-Galicia, Salvamento Marítimo (Spanish Lifeboats), the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and the Xunta de Galicia (Regional Government of Galicia) to compile all the available information. The scientific group is made up of Dr. Alfredo López from the Universidade de Aveiro-CESAM, Mr. Jose Cedeira from CEMMA; Mrs. Cristina Martín from TURMARES Tarifa, Mr. Ezequiel Andréu Cazalla from the Garum Tarifa Association, Mrs. Rocío Espada from Ecolocaliza and LBMarina from the University of Seville, Mr. Francisco Martinho from ECCO Ocean, Dr. Marisa Ferreira from SPVS and Dr. Ruth Esteban from the Museu da Baleia da Madeira and Ocean Sea. Institutional members include Mrs. Elvira García Bellido from the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and Mrs. Marina Sequeira from the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas de Portugal. The information used by the WG is based on more than 700 records of killer whales on the Iberian coast in the last 20 years compiled by CEMMA, Dr. Ruth Esteban, Mr. Francisco Martinho, SPVS and especially Turmares Tarifa. *IdentificationThe GLADIS, involved in the interactions, are young killer whales known in the Strait* During the different interactions, up to 3 different individual killer whales have been identified as directly involved in the events. These animals were observed near the sailboats, and were identified in 61% of the interactions thanks to photos and videos taken by the crew that were sent to the working group. In addition, in some interactions, two other adult individuals were observed further away from the ship, and have not been identified so far, but are considered as most likely not involved in the interaction. The three interacting killer whales have been named the GLADIS (BLACK, WHITE and GRAY) and all were observed from June to August of this year in the Strait of Gibraltar. Additionally, two of them (BLACK and WHITE GLADIS) had already been observed in previous years in the area. In the Strait of Gibraltar, individuals have been observed relatively frequently with injuries caused by the friction with fishing lines when they try to “steal” tuna already hooked on the longlines. The two GLADIS (BLACK AND WHITE) observed in the Strait of Gibraltar this year presented injuries consisting in marks appearing successively on their bodies and more intensively between the 20th of June and 3rd of August. The WG has mapped and described the injuries on a representation of the body of each specimen, to try to clarify their origin, hoping they can offer clues towards an explanation for the interacting behaviours. All marks identified as of anthropogenic origin or open wounds with doubtful origin were systematically registered. The observed marks were meticulously detailed based on the underwater photographic series provided by the Scientific Department of Turmares Tarifa. The photographs of the orcas located by Francisco Gil were taken by photographer Rafael Fernández Caballero, with the permission of MITECO. *CausesThe trigger for this behaviour could have been an adverse incident* In the Strait of Gibraltar, juvenile killer whales are commonly observed approaching boats of various kinds, likely due to their curiosity. The stern is especially as there are mobile and noisy structures. However, the interactions with sailboats detected since July in the Strait, Portugal and Galicia are considered unprecedented due to the repeated physical contact of the specimens with the structure of the ships. Although the approach and beginning of the interaction are similar to other previously observed encounters with boats, the GLADIS showed an unprecedented novel behaviour consisting in physical contact with the weakest structure of the ship, the rudder, which sometimes led to breaking partly or completely the rudder. The trigger for this strange and novel behaviour could have been an adverse incident between these killer whales and a boat. At the moment there is still no clear evidence of when or if it actually happened, and the WG cannot confirm what type of ship could be involved, or if the incident was accidental or intentional. However, given the lack of evidence, the WG cannot rule out either that the novel behaviour could be induced by the juvenile orcas’ own interest and curiosity, since by touching moving parts of the boat they can move or even stop a large moving object. Polar Biology. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00300-020-02734-y ABSTRACT Imagery and sighting data on bowhead whale (*Balaena mysticetus*) carcasses documented from 2009 to 2018 during aerial surveys in the eastern Chukchi and western Beaufort seas have provided evidence for killer whale (*Orcinus orca*) predation on bowhead whales of the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas stock. The Aerial Surveys of Arctic Marine Mammals (ASAMM) project provides information on distribution, behavior, and relative density of marine mammals. ASAMM surveys large areas of bowhead whale and killer whale summer and autumn habitat and offers consistent information on bowhead whale carcasses. Thirty-three bowhead whale carcasses were documented in July–October, from 2009 to 2018. Carcasses were distributed across the eastern Chukchi and western Beaufort seas from 141.6° W to 168.1° W and 68.9° N to 72.0° N. Carcass sighting rates (carcasses/1000 km) varied by month, year, and region. Statistical results suggest an alternating series of high and low annual carcass sighting rates. Eighteen bowhead whale carcasses having injuries consistent with probable killer whale predation were photo-documented: four each in 2016 and 2018, three each in 2013 and 2015, two in 2012, and one each in 2010 and 2017. Four carcasses, two in 2015 and one each in 2013 and 2018, were likely whales struck and lost during aboriginal subsistence hunting. Cause of death could not be determined for 11 carcasses. This study is the first systematic inquiry into non-harvest related mortality of bowhead whales in the U.S. Pacific Arctic and provides multi-year evidence for killer whale predation on bowhead whales in this portion of their range. New paper on long-term bowhead whale movements and behaviour by age and sex

Dear colleagues, Our paper entitled "Age- and sex-specific movement, behaviour and habitat-use patterns of bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Eastern Canadian Arctic" has recently been published in Polar Biology and we're happy to share a copy upon request. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00300-020-02739-7 Abstract As an annual ice-associated species, bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) are known to move northward in mid-to-late March and southward in early winter while following the annual cycle of sea ice decay and formation. We sought to determine when and where different demographic groups of Eastern Canada-West Greenland bowhead whales foraged throughout their range and what seasonal patterns occurred in their migratory and residency behaviour over a 16-year time period (2001-2016). Fifty-nine bowhead whales were equipped with satellite telemetry tags and hierarchical switching-state-space models (HSSSM) were used to infer probable foraging and travelling behaviour. Overall, 18,294 locations were predicted with the HSSSM and 70% of the locations (n?=?12,784) were associated with probable foraging behaviour and 15% (n?=?2709) included movements consistent with travelling behaviour. Both males and females were found to reside in Hudson Strait during winter. Females showed a slight preference for more northern regions (e.g. Gulf of Boothia) for feeding during summer compared with males who appeared to spend more time in more southern foraging grounds (e.g. Cumberland Sound). Females in Gulf of Boothia were significantly larger than females in Cumberland Sound but males were of comparable sizes in both regions. Lancaster Sound had the lowest occupancy, representing less than 0.8% of all HSSSM locations (n?=?154) suggesting that this area may not be preferred by subadult male or female bowhead whales. Understanding whale movement behaviour will assist in anticipating patterns in distribution shifts associated with warming. New Publication in Marine Biodiversity on baleen whales off Juan Fernandez, Chile

Abstract: The southeast Pacific (SEP) contains the home ranges of several migratory large whale species, determined largely based on research in coastal waters. These whales’ pelagic seasonal residency is unknown. The Juan Fernández Archipelago (JFA) is an offshore island in the SEP where passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) data collection is ongoing at the HA03 hydroacoustic station (sample rate of 250 Hz) maintained by the Preparatory Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization. Six years (2007–2009 and 2014–2016) of PAM data from HA03 were examined for the acoustic presence of Antarctic, Chilean (southeast Pacific 1, southeast Pacific 2), and southeast Indian Ocean blue whale song types; the fin whale 20-Hz song; and minke whale vocalizations. The weekly presence or absence of these six vocalization types was annotated manually by an expert analyst and then averaged across all years. For each vocalization type, the number of weeks per month with presence was averaged over all years. Consistently, we found austral wintertime presence of Antarctic blue, fin, and minke whales; and the year-round presence of Chilean blue whales. Southeast Indian Ocean blue whales were also detected, but very rarely. We discuss the possible seasonal movements of each species or acoustic group in the offshore SEP. This is the first year-round multispecies study of baleen whales in the offshore SEP and provides valuable information for understanding the migrations of endangered baleen whales in this region, highlighting the importance of offshore areas as hotspots for baleen whale biodiversity. DMAD - Marine Mammals Research Association have scientific projects running in Turkey, Montenegro and Albania. We conduct long-term studies of marine mammals in Istanbul, Antalya, the Levantine sea, Montenegrin coastal waters and the northern coastline of Albania. We aim to address questions about marine mammal abundance, distribution and behaviour, define critical habitats and investigate the impact of major threats, ranging from tourism to hydrocarbon exploration. Our wider attention focuses on the promotion and implementation of awareness initiatives targeted at the local community. More details on the projects can be found here: http://www.dmad.org.tr/our-projects ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP: The DMAD team provides lectures and training as well as constant supervision. You will be given the chance to learn the most popular methodologies used in marine mammal research including: -Cetacean species identification within the Mediterranean -Population statuses and threats to marine mammals within the Mediterranean -Software used in the field (Pythagoras, Logger 2010) -Data analysis using GIS, R, Distance, Mark -Passive Acoustic Monitoring using PamGuard -Residency Pattern Analysis -Population Estimation -Scientific support on manuscript and technical report writing including thesis supervision PARTICIPATION FEE: The internship is for 2 months and is about 100 hours and requires a contribution fee of 560euro, which fully goes to supporting the project.
