Abstract: Dolphins are among the largest and most diverse predators in marine ecosystems, but our understanding of their foraging ecology, which is crucial for ecosystem management, is poor. Delphinus delphis (common dolphins) are found in tropical and temperate waters globally. Stomach content studies indicate they are opportunistic predators that feed locally on abundant small pelagic schooling fish, but information is lacking on how their diet may vary seasonally and with ontogeny. We investigated effects of body length, sex, season, and year on D. delphis diet in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, using carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis of 56 skin samples collected during 13 years (2004−2016). Dolphin δ15N values changed with body length, suggesting ontogenetic dietary variation. Nitrogen isotope values were higher in austral autumn/winter compared to spring/summer, whilst δ13C values decreased throughout the study period, suggesting temporal changes in primary productivity likely affecting the dolphins’ diet. Sex had a minor effect on dolphin δ13C values, with male and female isotopic niches overlapping by 62.6% and 45.2% (respectively). Our results provide a baseline for detecting future changes in the trophic ecology of D. delphis in a key habitat in New Zealand and highlight their role as a sentinel species in this coastal ecosystem. Dear MARMAM Readers, On behalf of the Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab (https://www.facebook.com/aquanimallab) in City University of Hong Kong, my colleagues and I are pleased to share our new paper "Postmortem Neuroimaging of Cetacean Brains Using Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging", in the Frontiers in Marine Science. Recently, we published a paper regarding this very important topic in the Frontiers in Marine Science. We are the first to conduct both postmortem MRI and CT examinations routinely on stranded cetacean brains, which help setting up the baseline criteria in cetacean neuroimaging for accurate postmortem radiological reporting. With more PMMRI datasets anticipated in the future, we hope these help gain a better insight into the health condition of cetacean brain, and reveal more secrets of the intelligence, language and large complex brains that many cetaceans possess. New publication on in-water encounters with grey seals

(2020) Behaviors of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) addressed towards human swimmers during experimental open water encounters off Heligoland (German Bight, North Sea). Tourism in Marine Environments 15 (3-4): 159-171 https://doi.org/10.3727/154427320X15945013137030 Abstract Risks arising for humans during swim encounters with seals are poorly understood. This study was initiated to examine behaviors of unhabituated grey seals addressed towards humans during experimental, noncommercial seal-swim activities off Heligoland. In total, 26 in-water encounters were conducted. Behavioral classes and the number of seals simultaneously approaching swimmers were time sampled. A set of risky and nonrisky interactive behaviors was continuously sampled. Seals spent approximately the same amount of time interacting with swimmers (53%) as they did ignoring them (47%). Seals displayed higher rates of nonrisky behaviors than risky ones, but risky behaviors occurred during 73% of all seal-swims. Seals remained ≤20 m near swimmers for 51% and ≤1 m for 13% of the time. A mean number of 0.65 and 0.18 seals approached swimmers per minute within a range of ≤20 m and ≤1 m, respectively. Behavioral classes, interactive behaviors, and the number of seals approaching ≤20 m did not vary significantly throughout seal-swims but the number of seals approaching ≤1 m moderately decreased. Due to high rates of risky behaviors, it is recommended to promote public awareness on site and to regulate seal-swims before commercial operations emerge. DOI: 10.1038/s41598-020-73579-y Abstract: Understanding the factors which influence foraging behaviour and success in marine mammals is crucial to predicting how their populations may respond to environmental change. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus, AUFS) is a predominantly benthic forager on the shallow continental shelf of Bass Strait, and represents the greatest biomass of marine predators in south-eastern Australia. The south-east Australian region is experiencing rapid oceanic warming, predicted to lead to substantial alterations in prey diversity, distribution and abundance. In the present study, foraging effort and indices of foraging success and efficiency were investigated in 138 adult female AUFS (970 foraging trips) during the winters of 1998-2019. Large scale climate conditions had a strong influence on foraging effort, foraging success and efficiency. Foraging effort and foraging success were also strongly influenced by winter chlorophyll-a concentrations and sea-surface height anomalies in Bass Strait. The results suggest increasing foraging effort and decreasing foraging success and efficiency under anticipated environmental conditions, which may have population-level impacts. ONLINE COURSE Species distribution modelling with Bayesian statistics in R (SDMB01) This course will be delivered live https://www.prstatistics.com/course/species-distribution-modelling-with-bay… Course Overview: Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) are a powerful machine learning technique with very promising potential applications in ecology and biogeography in general, and in species distribution modelling (SDM) in particular. Becasue BART models can generally provide a well-balanced performance regarding both main aspects of predictive accuracy, namely discrimination (i.e. distinguishing presence from absence localities) and calibration (i.e., having predicted probabilities reflect the speciesâ€™ gradual occurrence frequencies) they are an effective method for handling marine mammal data. BART can generate accurate predictions without overfitting to noise or to particular cases in the data. As it is a cutting-edge technique in this field, BART is not yet routinely included in SDM workflows or in ensemble modelling packages. This course will include 1) an introduction or refresher on the essentials of the R language; 2) an introduction or refresher on species distribution modelling; 3) an overview of SDM methods of different complexity, including regression-based and machine-learning (both Bayesian and non-Bayesian) methods; 4) SDM building and block cross-validation focused on different aspects of model performance, including discrimination, classification, and calibration or reliability. We will use R packages â€™embarcaderoâ€™, â€˜fuzzySimâ€™ and â€˜modEvAâ€™ to see how BART can perform well when all these aspects are equally important, as well as to identify relevant predictors, map prediction uncertainty, plot partial dependence curves with credible intervals, and map relative favourability regarding combined or individual predictors.
