Greetings MARMAM Community, Ocean Science Analytics (OSA) is pleased to announce the recent launch of our online training program in marine mammal passive acoustic monitoring software. OSA's *"PAM Software Basics"* is a fully online technical training course that guides participants through the fundamental elements of two industry-leading software programs, Ishmael and PAMGuard. Whether you are new to passive acoustic analysis, or are simply needing to brush up on features, the guided videos and associated activities are designed to help develop (or foster) your skill set. The course features eight in-depth modules, including practice with a dataset. Access to the course is provided for a period of one month to enable ample time to review all guided videos and complete activities at your own pace. The semi-interactive format includes support and email feedback related to each activity submission by an experienced course instructor. Upon completion of all modules, participants will receive a certificate of completion from OSA. For companies or individuals seeking a more bespoke training environment, the course may be tailored to your needs by incorporating your own data and/or one-on-one consulting via video conference. We are currently registering participants for our February and March training groups. You may start a training group at any point during the month and receive the same 30 days of access from your start date. Manatee Internships-Blake Faucett Southeast manatee field station is currently seeking candidates for one 2020 internship! Interns will assist with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in South Florida. The Southeast Field lab is offering one internship: a 6-month term beginning in February. The expected start date for the internship is February 18th, 2020. Start dates will be flexible. Working hours are typically 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 40 hours a week, with some nights and weekends required. The position is in Tequesta (east coast of Florida, just north of Palm Beach). The intern's duties include assisting with manatee rescue, carcass salvage, and research in South Florida. Interns will assist with manatee and cetacean field necropsies, temperature monitoring research, and conduct manatee photo ID. Interns will also complete mortality and rescue reports and assist with other office and public outreach work as needed. To perform the duties of the position, interns will operate trucks, trailers, and boats up to 22' in length. The intern is required to complete a project and present a 10-15 minute presentation at the end of their internship. Qualifications: Junior or senior college students and recent graduates are eligible. Applicants should have some research field experience; be able to drive large trucks; be computer literate; be comfortable speaking to the public; and be proficient in the use of digital cameras, telephoto lenses, and filters. Previous animal-handling experience is preferred. Ability to trailer flatbeds and boats, as well as operate watercraft up to 22' in length is desirable. Interns must possess a valid driver's license, be able to lift 50 pounds, and be able to swim. Applicants should understand that this internship will require them to be wet, dirty, and outdoors in all weather conditions. This internship is unpaid. Housing is not provided. Interns must provide their own transportation to and from the field station. Graduate Research (MSc) Opportunity: Human Dimensions of Rebounding Populations of Seals and White Sharks on Cape Cod, MA. In the spring and summer of 2020, an interdisciplinary, multi-institution research team will undertake a study of attitudes towards seals and sharks among voters, tourists and commercial fishermen on Cape Cod. The study is a collaboration among Salem State University, University of Massachusetts, Boston, Tufts University Center for Animals and Public Policy, Center for Coastal Studies, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, and the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance. The project seeks to generate knowledge about stakeholder views and experiences with seals and sharks. This research will provide the basis for an engagement plan in Spring 2021 to enable managers, policy makers, and non-governmental organizations to foster coexistence, enhance public safety, and mitigate seal and shark-related conflicts. The research also will result in academic presentations and publications. We are seeking a highly motivated Master's student to join our research team as a graduate research assistant. The student will be enrolled at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, but also spend time at Salem State University and on Cape Cod. This position provides funding through May 2021, including tuition, travel, and salary. Manatee Photo-identification Internships The manatee photo-identification program is based in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI). FWRI is the research arm of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), a state agency. For more information about FWRI, please visit: https://myfwc.com/research/. FWRI's manatee photo-identification research focuses on long-term monitoring of Florida manatees in southwest Florida. The program's primary goal is to document individual manatees, which allows us to estimate annual adult survival and reproductive rates and to model population dynamics for state and federal assessments of Florida manatee status and recovery. Photo-identification data also provide insight regarding manatee movements, site fidelity, habitat use and behavior. Interns will primarily assist staff members with photographing manatees and collecting behavioral and environmental data at sites around Tampa Bay. Interns will also be responsible for a number of lab-based photo-identification tasks, such as downloading images, entering information into databases, scanning data sheets and matching images to known animals. Interns often collect data independently in the field, thus responsible, detail oriented applicants are encouraged to apply. Most field work is land-based; however, during the winter session opportunities are available to assist with boat-based manatee photo-identification. Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to data entry, assisting with manatee genetics research, special projects and outreach activities. This internship provides a great opportunity to gain valuable field and lab experience at a government agency. Two positions are available each year: one in winter (November to March) and one in summer (May to September). Start and end dates are flexible; however, a minimum commitment of four weekdays per week for four months is required. Work hours are typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no compensation for these internship positions and successful applicants will be responsible for their own housing and transportation to and from the institute. Positions are open until filled, and priority will be given to candidates who can commit for longer periods. Since oceanic water temperatures have increased, a noticeable shift in diversity of cetaceans present in marine hotspots is expected. In this paper, the community structure (occurrence) of cetacean species present around São Miguel Island, Portugal were investigated to contribute to the current understanding of the effects of CC on cetaceans. Lung function and metabolism in California sea lions

Dear All We are happy to share our new publication looking at lung function and metabolic rate while at rest on land and in water for California sea lions. We investigated how sea lions vary respiratory flow and breath duration on land and in water to keep tidal volume constant. It also confirms that the tidal volume in marine mammals is greater as compared with terrestrial mammals but only about 24-30% of the vital capacity. Abstract: Respiratory flow, expired O2, and CO2 were measured during normal voluntary breathing in thirteen confirmed healthy, male California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), body mass (Mb) range 49-130 kg. Expiratory and inspiratory flow (V), tidal volume (VTexp, VTinsp), and breath durations (Texp, Tinsp, Ttot) were collected on land (lying down in sternal recumbency and sitting up) and floating in water to test the hypothesis that lung function changes with body position and on land vs in water. For sea lions on land, no differences were seen in any of the lung function values when comparing lying down versus sitting up. However, when comparing animals in water versus on land, both Texp and Tinsp decreased, and expiratory and inspiratory flow increased while the VTexp and VTinsp remained the same. The resting mass specific VT (25.1 ± 1.7 ml kg-1) in the current study was approximately 24-30% of the estimated total lung capacity. We also measured breath-by-breath gas uptake to determine the O2 consumption rate (VO2) and CO2 production rates (VO2) during rest on land and in water. There were no differences in VO2 or VCO2 on land as compared with water, and the average estimated values were 0.58 ± 0.22 l O2 min-1 (range: 0.24-1.01 l O2 min−1) and 0.50 ± 0.19 l CO2 min-1 (range: 0.22-0.89 l CO2 min-1), respectively, which agrees with results from other studies in otariids. Additionally, the allometric mass-exponent for VT and VO2 were 1.13-1.20 and 0.86, respectively. These data are the first reported estimates of metabolic rate and lung function in confirmed healthy California sea lions. Dolphin Research Center - Research Internship Dolphin Research Center (DRC) is currently accepting applications for Research Interns for the Summer 2020 term (May 11 - September 6). DRC is a not-for-profit education and research facility, providing sanctuary and a forever home to a family of dolphins and sea lions. DRC is located on Grassy Key, in the heart of the Florida Keys. Internships at DRC are an exciting way to develop career skills as well as an opportunity to see how a marine mammal facility operates. Research interns participate in DRC's ongoing behavioral, cognitive, and field research projects, giving them broad exposure to a variety of research methodologies. Interns receive extensive on-the-job training in observing marine mammal behavior, collecting observational data, working with research equipment, and assisting with experimental research sessions. Note: conducting your own research projects is not part of this position. You will be based on the beautiful Scottish Isle of Mull, volunteering part-time between the 30th March and the 2nd October 2020. This placement is perfect if you are passionate about inspiring people and keen to gain experience and confidence communicating with and teaching others. My co-authors and I are pleased to announce our publications bellow: “Clinical signs in free-ranging Guiana dolphins Sotalia guianensis during a morbillivirus epidemic: case study in Sepetiba Bay, Brazil” in the Diseases of Aquatic Organisms 133:175-180. https://doi.org/10.3354/dao03343. ABSTRACT: From November 2017 to March 2018, a cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) outbreak caused an unprecedented mass mortality among Guiana dolphins Sotalia guianensis in Ilha Grande Bay and Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Small boat surveys were conducted to document the behavior and clinical signs presented by diseased dolphins. We observed 5 abnormally behaving, disoriented Guiana dolphins on separate days, of which 1 died stranded and 2 sank. Signs of ataxia included difficulties with swimming and maintaining a course, balance and buoyancy. At least 40 other individuals were emaciated, and 10 photo-identified dolphins had miscellaneous skin lesions, some ulcerated. Labored breathing suggestive of airway obstruction was heard in several groups. These neurological, respiratory and cutaneous signs may comprise part of the clinical constellation of CeMV infection in dolphins. The combined threat of anthropogenic pressures and CeMV lethal disease is of concern for the survival of the Guiana dolphin population in Sepetiba Bay.
