Dear Marmam members On behalf of my co-authors I am pleased to share our recent publication in Remote Sensing: "X-Band Radar for Cetacean Detection (Focus on Tursiops truncatus) and Preliminary Analysis of Their Behavior" We tested the capability of an X-band radar (ground based) to track and detect cetaceans in the area in front of Corniglia (SP - Italy - Cinque Terre MPA). Abstract: Cetaceans are protected species all over the world, most of them are vulnerable, endangered, or data deficient (according to International Union for Conservation of Nature - IUCN red list). X-band radars detect the echo of the electromagnetic signal reflected by an obstacle or a ship (target). The application of X-band radar to the detection of cetaceans is a new and innovative field of research that could improve the automation of marine mammal data collection, and this is the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. The aim of this work was to test the capability of X-band radar installed along the coast (ground-based) to detect and track cetaceans in a range of approximately 2.5 nautical miles from the radar antenna. Data collection included a part of field work, implemented through the acquisition of photographic images and target’s radar detection (by the panoramic terrace Santa Maria in Corniglia), and a part, performed in the laboratory, of data analysis. The work was undertaken between May and November 2018. During this period, 30 days of monitoring were carried out (about 300 h) and about 10,000 radar images were recorded. The first results showed that we were able to recognize the target “cetacean” from the other common targets (boats, buoys, etc.) detected by the radar. In particular 70 dolphins were sighted by visual census; 12 of them were recognized on radar images. Radar images allowed extraction of dolphin dive time (between 2 and 15 s). The next step will be to allow the radar to identify the presence of marine mammals itself since it also works at night and with low visibility. This technique could complement the protection measures of cetaceans, highlighting their presence at sea even if it is impossible with waves higher than 0.8 m and over distances greater than 2.5 km. New Publication: Whisker growth in Arctic and tropical seals

To expand comparative data for phocid seals, we report fine-scale growth patterns, retention times, and temporal patterns of whisker loss for 3 captive seals using direct and photogrammetric methods. The ringed seal *Pusa hispida*, bearded seal *Erignathus barbatus*, and Hawaiian monk seal *Neomonachus schauinslandi* all showed rapid regrowth following whisker loss, with maximum growth rates of 0.15 to 0.20 cm d-1. After this initial growth period, tissue deposition rates contrasted between the smallest species—the ringed seal—and the other 2 species. Ringed seal whiskers exhibited an asymptotic growth pattern typical of other phocids, whereas growth of bearded and monk seal whiskers continued at a slow, linear rate until shedding. The ringed seal had a seasonal pattern of whisker loss that coincided with the timing of the annual pelage molt, whereas there was no temporal pattern of whisker loss for the other 2 species. The rapid-to-slow growth of bearded and monk seal whiskers is unique within the phocid lineage, along with the presence of smooth rather than undulated whiskers in these species. New publication: "DetEdit: A graphical user interface for annotating and editing events detected in long-term acoustic monitoring data"

Automated signal detectors and classifiers are needed to identify events within these datasets, such as the presence of species-specific sounds or anthropogenic noise. These automated methods, however, are rarely a complete substitute for expert analyst review. The ability to visualize and annotate acoustic events efficiently can enhance scientific insights from large, previously intractable datasets. A MATLAB-based graphical user interface, called *DetEdit*, was developed to accelerate the editing and annotating of automated detections from extensive acoustic datasets. This tool is highly-configurable and multipurpose, with uses ranging from annotation and classification of individual signals or signal-clusters and evaluation of signal properties, to identification of false detections and false positive rate estimation. *DetEdit* allows users to step through acoustic events, displaying a range of signal features, including time series of received levels, long-term spectral averages, time intervals between detections, and scatter plots of peak frequency, RMS, and peak-to-peak received levels. Additionally, it displays either individual, or averaged sound pressure waveforms, and power spectra within each acoustic event. These views simultaneously provide analysts with signal-level detail and encounter-level context. *DetEdit* creates datasets of signal labels for further analyses, such as training classifiers and quantifying occurrence, abundances, or trends. Although designed for evaluating underwater-recorded odontocete echolocation click detections, *DetEdit* can be adapted to almost any stereotyped impulsive signal. I*nteractive introductory distance sampling training* The University of St Andrews has been training people in design and analysis of distance sampling studies for decades. Perhaps you've wanted to attend but could not get permission for travel to Scotland or the scheduling of workshops in August conflicted with your field work. 👨‍🌾 Distance sampling methods for estimating animal abundance is one of the most widely used methods in not only terrestrial systems but also marine mammal 🐋 investigations where assessment of marine mammal populations is difficult because imperfect detectability. We are offering the training workshop in 10 two-hour blocks in late February. You will be invited to interact in short lectures on distance sampling principles. 👩‍🎓 Exercises analysing data sets in R will reinforce those principles and the lecturer will be available to assist during the practical session via screen sharing. Dolphin Research Internship in Savannah, Georgia

Savannah State University Dolphin Sciences Laboratory (SSUDS lab) internships The SSUDS lab is located adjacent to the marsh on the campus of Savannah State University in coastal Georgia. The SSUDS lab, led by Dr. Tara Cox, studies spatial ecology and conservation biology of long-lived marine vertebrates, marine and coastal policy and management, and human interactions with marine mammals. Current projects include: Human-interaction behaviors (particularly begging), stock structure and abundance estimates, catalog matching to other study areas in the SE USA, contaminant loads, and genetics of common bottlenose dolphins. The SSUDS Lab selects volunteer interns during three seasons each year: * Winter/Spring (positions January to May, applications due by October 1st); * Summer (positions May to August, applications due by March 1st); * Fall (positions August to December, applications due by June 1st). Interns will support graduate research on common bottlenose dolphins living in the local waterways. There may be additional opportunities to help other marine science graduate students with diverse fieldwork (e.g. trawling, oyster reef restoration and monitoring). Wild dolphin research opportunities (Summer 2020)

The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP, www.dolphincommunicationproject.org) is currently seeking students (currently enrolled, non-matriculated or recent grads) for two different programs during summer 2020. Position/Program details, with remaining spaces, are listed below. DCP's mission is to promote the scientific study of dolphins and inspire their conservation. With research ongoing since 1991, our questions focus primarily on communication and behavior among dolphins. Our Bimini, Bahamas research site is where we study wild Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins, maintaining photo-ID catalogs with over 250 individuals. A full publication list is available on our website. All programs may qualify for academic credit, however it the student's responsibility to arrange this with their home institution. DCP can provide a letter confirming participation and contact hours. Additional reading material and/or assignments can be assigned. All positions will remain open until filled, however we are eager to fill all remaining positions as soon as possible. Whistling is metabolically cheap for communicating bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

We show that whistling adds no measurable energetic cost in bottlenose dolphins, and that costs are significantly lower than previously reported experimental estimates. Abstract Toothed whales depend on sound for communication and foraging, making them potentially vulnerable to acoustic masking from increasing anthropogenic noise. Masking effects may be ameliorated by higher amplitudes or rates of calling, but such acoustic compensation mechanisms may incur energetic costs if sound production is expensive. The costs of whistling in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have been reported to be much higher (20% of resting metabolic rate, RMR) than theoretical predictions (0.5–1% of RMR). Here, we address this dichotomy by measuring the change in the resting O2 consumption rate (V̇O2), a proxy for RMR, in three post-absorptive bottlenose dolphins during whistling and silent trials, concurrent with simultaneous measurement of acoustic output using a calibrated hydrophone array. The experimental protocol consisted of a 2-min baseline period to establish RMR, followed by a 2-min voluntary resting surface apnea, with or without whistling as cued by the trainers, and then a 5-min resting period to measure recovery costs. Daily fluctuations in V̇O2 were accounted for by subtracting the baseline RMR from the recovery costs to estimate the cost of apnea with and without whistles relative to RMR. Analysis of 52 sessions containing 1162 whistles showed that whistling did not increase metabolic cost (P>0.1, +4.2±6.9%) as compared with control trials (−0.5±5.9%; means±s.e.m.). Thus, we reject the hypothesis that whistling is costly for bottlenose dolphins, and conclude that vocal adjustments such as the Lombard response to noise do not represent large direct energetic costs for communicating toothed whales. Although the calls of a few species are well known, major gaps exist in our knowledge about the relationship between vocal output and behavioural context, gender and age for most species. Accurate parameter estimates (e.g., typical source levels, frequency ranges, and temporal characteristics of animal sounds) relevant to their behaviour (activities such as foraging, migrating, mating, or parental care) are needed to establish use of critical habitats (when monitored by acoustics) or to assess potential effects of anthropogenic sound exposure (including reduction of the detection space of sounds used for communication). The emergence of UAVs provides new perspectives and data collection capabilities for marine mammal research. Although UAVs have been frequently exploited for visual observations of whales, most approaches for monitoring and recording sounds from individual whales are still performed using overside hydrophones from a boat or using acoustic tags attached to the animals. Laguna San Ignacio (LSI), Mexico, is one of the breeding and calving grounds of the Eastern North Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population. LSI area's restricted geography, combined with the short dive times of the whales, provided an excellent field laboratory to test a dual drone approach. We used two UAVs: one to obtain acoustic measurements close to the whales and another one to obtain overhead visual observations. For the acoustic drone, a hydrophone (SoundTrap) was suspended via a 2-m line to a waterproof UAV quadcopter (Swellpro), which has the ability to take off and land from the surface of water. Simultaneously, the visual drone (DJI) monitored the whales in the area. Between 27 February and 17 March 2019, we simultaneously recorded underwater gray whale sounds and visual behavioural observations. During 92 min of underwater acoustic recordings, the acoustic drone recorded 11 call types. By time-synching underwater audio with the behavioural video, we obtained new insights into the source levels and functions of various quiet underwater sound that are difficult to impossible to obtain with standard methods. To our knowledge, no studies combining overhead visual observations and underwater acoustic recordings to describe acoustic behaviour and sound parameters of calls have been previously published.
