*DOLPHIN RESEARCH INTERNSHIP IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Interns are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmental friendly and multicultural environment. Interns have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from 1st of May to 31st October 2020. The minimum internship attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, or in opportunistic platforms (commercial dolphin-watching boats). Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions and seat availability in the dolphin-watching boats. Field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The interns will be trained to: · Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; · Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; · Collect data on behavior, group size, species, etc.; · Collect photos to photo-identification, acoustic recording, and underwater videos while on-board; · Secchi disk methodology; · Help to collect of drone footage from the marine mammals. *DATA ANALYSIS: *This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *INTERNSHIP FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. This internship requires a monetary contribution which is used to off-set the cost of accommodation and running a non-profit. Although CM has been described for many species of cetaceans, characterization of the acute cardiac injury - an important component of this syndrome - are still scarce. In this study, we firstly estimated a normal range for cardiac troponin I (cTnI) on cetaceans. Here, through biochemical analysis (especially of cTnI) and histopathological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical correlations with decreased troponin immunolabelling, we studied the cardiac injury in live-stranded cetaceans. Nine cetaceans which stranded alive on the Canary Islands (January 2016 - June 2019) were included in this study. Sampled individuals presented elevated values of plasma cTnI, which were correlated to histopathological lesions comprised of vascular changes and acute degenerative lesions. Immunohistochemically, injured cardiomyocytes showed a decreased intrafibrillar troponin immunoreaction. This is the first attempt to establish a normal baseline range for cTnI in cetaceans, and the first study comparing plasma biomarkers values with histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. This approach allowed us to demonstrate the degree of cardiac damage as a result of injury, consistent with ischemia–reperfusion lesions. The knowledge gained here could improve decision-making procedures during stressful situations, mainly in live-strandings, handling, and rehabilitation, thereby reducing the mortality of cetaceans. Even though it may not always be possible to determine the specific illness and/or etiology, the description and subsequent interpretation of the injuries provide an invaluable understanding of pathology in cetacean post-mortem investigations. Although pathological studies have been previously reported in various cetacean species, such descriptions of the infraorder Mysticeti remain rare. A live-stranded neonatal Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) which subsequently died soon after the stranding, was assessed by physical exam, blood examination, gross necropsy evaluation, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry. It presented with elevated serum levels of creatine kinase, cardiac troponin I, urea, and creatinine. Microscopically, we observed keratin spicules (squamous epithelial cells) and areas of atelectasis in the lungs. Acute degeneration in the myocytes and cardiomyocytes were comparable to the findings previously described in cases of capture myopathy in live-stranded cetaceans. Immunohistochemistry biomarkers such as myoglobin, fibrinogen, and troponin were analyzed. Skeletal and myocardial damage has been documented in several cetacean species. However, this is the first reported case of skeletal and cardiac rhabdomyolysis associated with live-stranding in a newborn Bryde's whale that suffered from fetal distress. Last call SPRING Internship w/housing stipend The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center in Crescent City, California, is seeking applicants for several internships in marine mammal stranding response and rehabilitation. $1000 housing stipend available. Internships are a minimum of 12 weeks, with longer commitments encouraged. Applicants will be living and working in Crescent City, CA. The spring term (Harbor Seal Pupping Season) is the busiest and most "hands-on" term at NMMC. There are three spring internships available. Interns will participate in: * marine mammal rescue and health assessment * food preparation and feeding patients * wound care and medication administration * blood draw and subcutaneous fluid administration * observing surgeries and necropsies * cleaning pens, pools, kennels and hospital facility * fundraising events and special projects Qualifications: * must be physically fit with the ability to lift 50lbs and walk long distances on the beach in adverse conditions such as hot and cold temperatures, humidity, rain, and wind * must be willing to work 5 days a week including evenings, weekends, and holidays * must be self-motivated, articulate, reliable, and responsible * must work well independently as well as with a team * must possess a valid driver's license * must have experience with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel * interns are responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution for university credit This is an unpaid position with no housing provided, however, we do offer a $1000 housing stipend (3 pymts of $333) for 2 of our spring internships on a first come first serve basis . Allied Whale and BHWW Co. Research Assistant Positions: 2020 Field Season

Allied Whale (AW), the marine mammal research lab of College of the Atlantic and Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. (BHWW) seek 5 interns/research assistants for the 2020 field season. These are entry-level research positions designed to offer experience for individuals seeking to develop their professional careers in marine mammal research. Two summer positions (May 10 *through* August 31) and three full season positions (May 10 *through* October 14) are available. *Overview of position*: This is a unique internship program in that the selected individuals will have the opportunity to participate and receive training in a wide range of marine mammal research activities Allied Whale while also working as a crew/scientist aboard commercial whale watching trips operating from Bar Harbor, Maine. Allied Whale currently supports field projects in the trophic ecology of humpback and fin whales, the ongoing housing and maintenance of the North Atlantic humpback and fin whale photo ID catalogs, an active stranding response program, and a research/education partnership with Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. In addition, Allied Whale maintains the facilities on and conducts research from Mount Desert Rock, a remote offshore island. The interns play a critical role in the success of the field season and serve as support to all aspects of summer activities within both Allied Whale and Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. *Description of duties*: Upon arrival in May, all interns will receive research, boat crew, and Gulf of Maine natural history training by both Allied Whale and the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company staff. As the Allied Whale field season does not begin until early June- the first several weeks will be focused on hands-on training of whale watch deckhand responsibilities, helping with boat maintenance, and assisting with whale catalog matching in the office or stranding response. Once the season is in full swing, interns will rotate through shifts working as a Research Assistant/Deckhand (RA) for the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co., shifts working as deck/galley on lighthouse/nature cruises, shifts in the Allied Whale office, and time off. Every week, schedules will be different and weather dependent. A typical week in June-August may include 2-4 days scheduled as researchers on Whale Watch vessels, 1-2 days scheduled in the office, and two days off (these days may or not be consecutive). Weather may cause shifts to be canceled and some weeks may be lighter in load or responsibilities. *Below are specific expectations for each designated shift:* *Whale watch trips: *Research responsibilities on the whale watch trips include searching for whales, photo-identification of whales and behavioral data collection. RAs will also collect pelagic seabird data during offshore travel to the whale feeding areas. Beyond research, RAs are responsible for assisting the naturalist in promoting education and conservation programs on each trip. In this, maintaining a positive, professional, and friendly demeanor while engaging whale watch passengers and fellow crew is necessary. Deckhand responsibilities include line handling, vessel cleaning, helping seasick passengers, and passenger safety. When whale watch trips cancel for weather, crew may be asked to report for duty to complete maintenance on the vessel. *Allied Whale office shifts: *On scheduled office days, interns will be required to be available in the Allied Whale office from 9AM-5PM. During those hours, interns will match individual whales to our catalog, enter their whale watch data into the database, manage the Adopt-a-whale program, answer phone calls to the office, and be on call for assisting with response to strandings or necropsies. Interns schedule for office shifts will also be on call for boat research days. *Allied Whale boat research days: *When weather permits, interns will assist Allied Whale staff and graduate students on trips offshore to collect biopsy samples of humpback and fin whales. While on board one of the research vessels, interns will be responsible for collecting photo identification of whales and recording data. Interns will be responsible for processing images from these trips. If schedule allows, RAs may also participate in an overnight trip to collect samples in Canada. *Mount Desert Rock*: We hope for interns to also complete several shifts (each at least a week in length) at our offshore research station Mount Desert Rock. While on the island, interns will participate in land-based whale monitoring from the lighthouse tower, seal counts, gull counts, and maintenance/construction projects at the station. Interns will collect weekly samples of seal scat to contribute to a collaborative microplastics project. Interns will also receive experience working in a remote off-the-grid location. Once hired, RAs will work to develop a collaborative group project (on seal colony, intertidal community, nesting birds, jellies, etc.) and will take turns with data collection during their shifts offshore. RAs will also stay in contact with the BHWW office with sightings reports. *Pay/Housing*: Those accepted to the program are able to earn income by their work on the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Deckhands are paid $55 a trip (at the height of summer, there are 2 trips running a day). Interns also receive free First Aid Certification. Provided housing in downtown Bar Harbor is mandatory for a fee. Rent for the season will total approximately $1500 for summer interns and $2250 for full season interns (or approx $375 per month). While at Mount Desert Rock, food is provided for free. **After August 31, if any of the *summer interns* are interested they are welcome to work full time for the remainder of the season as crew for the BHWW as deckhand/galley on lighthouse trips, nature cruises, whale watches, and cruise ship tendering operations. *Qualifications*: Applicants should have a college background or be currently enrolled in a biology, ecology, and/or marine sciences program. Previous data collection experience in a research setting and/or knowledge of marine mammals are great advantages. While training will be provided and no prior boating/camera experience is required, time spent offshore or skills in photography are also assets. Due to Coast Guard requirements, all crew onboard US commercial vessels and therefore *all research assistant/interns, must be US citizens or have permanent resident alien status.* Also, all interns will be drug screened prior to employment and will be enrolled in a random drug testing program. Most importantly, applicants must be positive in attitude, flexible to quickly changing schedules, able to work independently, and be seaworthy/comfortable working on boats in rough weather. Good evening, MARMAM Community, My name is Jennifer Lopez and I am the Volunteer Coordinator with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS). AMCS is a 501 © 3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting conservation of our marine environment through action. Some of our action items include data research, surveys and health assessments, involvement in the Specially Trained Animal Response Team (START), response to entangled and out of habitat animals, necropsies, beach monitoring, public outreach, and education. I wanted to reach out to let you know that our organization is now accepting applications for our Spring and Summer 2020 internships. We offer internships in three different areas: 1) Conservation Research Program Join our conservation efforts through a Conservation Research Internship. Conduct beach monitoring events including beach clean ups, cold stunned sea turtle monitoring, and seal surveys. Work with collected data to help bring a better understanding of Long Island’s marine habitat and the marine animals and marine debris and present within. Specific projects include: 1. Pinniped Population Documentation: Lead a seal watching cruise once per week throughout the length of the internship aboard the Peconic Star II. Educate the public on seals in our area, and photo document the population of grey seals that are observed during the cruise. Observations include weather recordings, animal numbers and behavior while at the site. Compare this data to other days of the week from fellow interns to determine if there is any predictability in residency or frequency of sightings. Interns will also review photographs taken during the winter seal cruises in Shinnecock Bay, identify any injured animals, and complete counts of the photographs taken. This will give a different perspective to seal observation work in comparison to the grey seals observed on the cruises they lead. 2. GIS/ Database Management: Develop database for storing stranding, survey and satellite tracking data. Map strandings real time for monthly stranding trend review, and keep the team up to date with real time stranding trends. Map satellite tagged animals and input data from tags into the database. 3. Wild Population Surveys: Work with biologists on data collected from aerial, land and boat based surveys. Maintain data entry for these trips, learn about conducting and leading each type of survey, and work with photographs collected from surveys to count animals and identify natural or human caused injuries. 4. Marine Debris Documentation: Lead two beach cleanup activities per week, one north shore beach one south shore beach. Educate the public on the harms of marine debris and data collection techniques. Record data from each site, compile at the end of internship to compare amount collected at each site and difference in items collected. Create marine debris content to be used on AMCS website and presented at educational opportunities. Skills important to the internship are attention to detail, the ability to work individually or as a part of a team, and the ability to train and lead small groups for beach monitoring efforts. Our objectives are to train students to successfully monitor the beaches of our local marine environment and collect data to help gain a better understanding of these individual landscapes and their properties. Students will also receive training in what to do in the case of marine mammal and sea turtle sightings and strandings. This internship will provide students with firsthand knowledge on the impacts of marine debris on our environment, will allow them to quantify and qualify the marine debris specific to individual beaches, and how to involve our communities in taking action to make a positive impact. Data collected will contribute to efforts in mitigation. 2) Education Program Work with our Education Team to promote an informed community that is aware of our marine environment and its inhabitants, our human impact, and how to impact the environment in a positive way. Help us with our outreach efforts by conducting community beach clean ups, and education programs geared to a variety of ages through an Education Internship. Skills required for this internship include the ability to communicate in writing and in public speaking, and a basic knowledge of environmental science. Our objectives are to provide students with hands on education experience in a variety of outlets and audiences. Students will train to communicate with and teach local communities about our marine environment, the marine mammals and sea turtles inhabiting our waters, the anthropogenic threats that they face, and how we can work together to help create a healthier environment. Students will not only have the opportunity to grow in their ability to educate the public, but will also learn more about our ocean's need for conservation, and how to promote conservation as a part of this marine mammal and sea turtle stranding response team. 3) Field Response Program Work with our Field Response Team to conduct stranding investigation efforts, including necropsies for the marine mammals and sea turtles that wash up on our shores through a Field Response Internship. Specific Projects include: 1. Response to a specific species or taxa (i.e. Sea turtles, or more specifically Loggerhead sea turtles) Complete all data collection required for those animals, and compile cause of mortality tables. Compare these results to the results from 2017 and 2018 to determine patterns or unusual findings. 2. Sea turtle stomach contents: Examine the stomach contents of sea turtles examined in 2017 and 2018 season, and categorize food items eaten, along with foreign items found. 3. Sample Inventory Maintenance: Maintain inventory of marine mammal and sea turtle samples collected during response. Research technology to assist with digitization of current inventory and implement procedures for real time entry into inventory system when samples are collected. Skills this internship requires include the ability to work as a member of a team, participation in lecture-based training and some flexibility regarding some of the hands-on experiences like necropsy events, which do not have much notice due to the nature of these events. *Education and Outreach Assistant Opportunity – * *Sea Watch Foundation* For the past 20 years, Sea Watch Foundation ( http://www.seawatchfoundation.org.uk/) has been monitoring the dolphins, porpoises and whales that inhabit Cardigan Bay in West Wales, documenting abundance trends, identifying conservation threats, and advising on the best ways to protect the populations both within and outside the Special Areas of Conservation. Alongside its own scientific surveys and research, Sea Watch has for more than a quarter of a century pioneered citizen science as well as run a range of education and outreach programmes. The Sea Watch Foundation is seeking an *Education and Outreach Assistant *for the 2020 season at its field office in Cardigan Bay. This position will suit a volunteer who has a strong interest in marine conservation and recognises the importance of educating and raising awareness by involving the public. This position can be very busy, so applicants will need to demonstrate their ability to deal with varied and heavy workloads, and the ability to multi-task. The assistant will be responsible for the following duties: - Running the Visitor Centre/Education Hub. This is your work space (your domain), you will be based here during your time with us, and will need to keep it clean and presentable for the public. Become familiar with it, the content, displays, merchandise etc so you can talk easily to the public about what goes on here - Raising Sea Watch Foundation’s profile locally (organising events, organising & manning the Sea Watch stand on the pier, liaising with local boat operators to produce educational materials) - Working closely with our main boat operator in New Quay, *Dolphin Spotting Boat Trips*, on occasions presenting our Boat Talk on their 1 & 2hr trips, and otherwise organising interns to do so, and visiting their office regularly to check that our leaflets and cards are displayed properly and stocked up - Promoting and organising the National Whale and Dolphin Watch education and outreach activities in New Quay (25th July – 2nd August 2020) - Participating in presentations and creating activities to take to local schools/groups, as well as using our specialised talks within the Visitors Centre and within schools/groups - Creating educational/promotional materials (posters, displays, flyer), and maintaining external signage and a daily sightings board - Social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, website) on a routine basis - Interacting with the media (radio, TV and newspapers), including preparing press releases - Researching and writing articles - Participating in training courses in New Quay - Representing Sea Watch at public events in New Quay - Liaising with the Sightings Officer, Chiara, and Adopt a Dolphin Coordinator, Kirsten, for the promotion of our Adopt a Dolphin scheme. Dear colleagues, I would like to call your attention to this special theme session on "Top predators, food webs, and ecosystem-based fisheries management" at the next ICES Annual Science Conference (ASC), 7 – 10 September 2020, Copenhagen, Denmark. This session is especially meant to share research on top predators including marine mammals, seabirds, turtles and large fish and provides a great opportunity to dive deep into the food web. In ecosystem-based fisheries management, non-target stocks, habitats, and predators that are in part dependent on commercially exploited stocks must be taken into account. Currently, fish stock advice focuses on Total Allowable Catch and does not explicitly take into account prey levels available to piscivorous sharks, marine mammals, or seabirds. Similarly, conservation efforts tend to focus on key habitats and species of concern with less attention paid to the prey species that support them. Ecosystem-based management is the framework that allows these related aims to be considered jointly. When fully implemented, ecosystem-based management shall support efforts to restore and maintain biodiversity and simultaneously provide productive sustainable fisheries in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals<https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/story/supporting-shift-more-…> and regional frameworks such as the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive<https://ec.europa.eu/environment/marine/eu-coast-and-marine-policy/marine-s…>. This theme session provides an opportunity to discuss key issues of importance to conservation and fisheries management, to review methods and to demonstrate a way forward to ecosystem advice and ecosystem-based management. Understanding cumulative impacts to marine mammals from offshore wind development

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is hosting its second State of the Science Workshop <http://www.nyetwg.com/2020-workshop> on Wildlife and Offshore Wind Energy on May 5-6, 2020 in Rye Brook, New York. The first day of the workshop will consist of plenary presentations to summarize the current state of knowledge on cumulative impacts to wildlife from offshore wind energy development, including a review of major stressors to marine mammals, discussions of population consequences of disturbance (PCOD) modeling, and cumulative noise impacts to marine mammals from pile driving and other sources. The second day of the workshop will primarily consist of smaller workshops focused on developing research plans to improve our understanding of cumulative impacts, with one of the breakout groups focused on marine mammals.
