Monterey Bay Whale Watch is looking for a part-time (full time in summer) experienced Marine Biologist/Naturalist! Come join a dedicated team of Marine Biologists in one of the most diverse and productive whale watching areas in the world. Help lead tours, educate the public, and collect data on a variety of different organisms including Humpback Whales, 6 species of dolphins, Blue Whales, and Orcas. More about our research : On every trip. one of the Marine Biologist's most important tasks is to collect data on a variety of different organisms that we see in Monterey Bay. This includes: filling out data sheets, taking Photo-ID pictures, and observing behaviors of different cetacean species. We also are working on different Photo-ID catalogs and digitizing our data that we have been collecting for several decades. Our company has been doing research on Orcas and Humpback Whales for close to 30 years and our Marine Biologists play a key role in helping collect data on both of these species, as well as several others. We also collaborate with Cascadia Research Collective and HappyWhale, as well as other local research organizations. Required Experience: - Bachelors Degree in Marine Science or related field (minimum required education level) - At least 2 years of Naturalist experience - Knowledge of the history, cetaceans, and birds of Monterey Bay - Excellent speaking ability - comfortable interacting with the public both on a microphone to over 100 people and individually - Enthusiastic and outgoing personality Preferred Experience: - 4 years of Naturalist experience - Deckhanding experience (able to fill in as deckhand or double duty when needed) - Photo-ID/data entry/research experience Please send a resume/CV and a word document including : your cover letter, availability, and potential start date to mbwwassistant(a)gmail.com.

Science-policy opportunity, species profiles for MEASO

G'day everyone! We are looking for ECRs interested in delivering Southern Ocean science to policy makers. In particular, we are seeking ECRs who would like to have a core role in contributing to profiles of different taxa in the Southern Ocean for use in the Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean ( MEASO - http://soki.aq/display/MEASO/MEASO+Home) This is a great opportunity to share your expertise and gain experience in communicating scientific findings to a different audience. You will be mentored in developing these profiles and in considering how best to communicate information on the status and trends of taxa to policy-makers. Specifically, we are keen to have any of you who specialise in different Southern Ocean taxa from primary producers through to blue whales and everything in between, to assist to collate, summarise and review of species information (see description of requirements for profiles at: http://soki.aq/display/MEASO/MEASO+Biota) The list of taxonomic groups are given on the Biota page of MEASO. We are seeking profiles of the main taxa within each of these groups that can be either combined or separate profiles depending on information available. Some species profiles are well underway and now require reviewing by experts of those taxa whilst others are under development and require initial input from scientists to compile species information from the literature. Great Australian Bight Right Whale Study (Head of Bight, South Australia) The Curtin University Great Australian Bight Right Whale Study (GABRWS) is seeking a research intern for the 2019 season. This study contributes to the long term monitoring of southern right whales in the Great Australian Bight, South Australia, now in its 29th year. Work is completed at the Head of Bight, in the Great Australian Bight, South Australia. This area is very remote and isolated with limited resources. Duties will include cliff based census of aggregation area, photo identification, data entry and matching of photo ID to the long term catalogue. This position is available for 6 weeks: July 13 – September 1, 2019. We ask that the intern is able to commit for the entire period. Some time commitment prior to the field season is also required for training and project contribution. This is an unpaid position and the successful applicant will be responsible for transport costs to and from Perth, Western Australia where they will be met and driven to the study site (two day drive). Food, travel and accommodation expenses will be covered during the internship fieldwork. Accommodation is very basic and includes shared kitchen/living/office space and a private room in the form of a converted sea container with bed, shower and toilet. Required skills: - Undergraduate degree in marine biology/conservation biology or a related major (honours preferred) - Marine mammal research background (preferred) - Reliable, motivated, positive attitude - Ability to work and live closely with others as part of a small team - Ability to work in a remote and isolated area - Strong work ethic with the ability to work unsupervised - Field research/survey experience - Computer and written skills - Fluent in English Preference will be given to individuals with experience in right whale photo identification and matching, although this is not essential, and training will be provided. NOAA Fisheries is proposing to issue seven-year regulations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) to govern the incidental take of marine mammals by the U.S. Navy’s in the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) Study Area. The regulations would be valid from the publication date of the final rule (if issued) through November 13, 2025. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was recently amended to allow for seven-year authorizations under the MMPA for military readiness activities. The Navy’s activities qualify as military readiness activities pursuant to the MMPA. This seven-year rule and subsequent Letters of Authorization would replace the existing five-year rule published on November 14, 2018 (83 FR 57076) and Letters of Authorization. NOAA Fisheries’ proposed regulations and the subsequent Letters of Authorization include identical required mitigation and monitoring measures that are expected to reduce adverse impacts to marine mammals as those required under the existing five-year final rule and Letters of Authorization. The Navy’s activities are likely to result in the incidental take of marine mammals by exposing them to sonar, in-water detonations, airguns, and pile driving/removal activities. The proposed takes authorized by this action are Level B behavioral disturbance and Temporary Threshold Shift takes and Level A Permanent Threshold Shift and Injury. A small number of serious injury or mortality takes are also proposed for this action from ship shock trials (explosives) and vessel strikes. The AFTT Study Area includes existing range complexes and additional areas located in the Atlantic Ocean along the eastern coast of North America, in portions of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, at Navy pier-side locations and port transit channels, near civilian ports, and in bays, harbors, and inland waterways. JNCC accredited MMO training with ORCA

Dear All, We are running field-based, JNCC accredited MMO training courses in partnership with ORCA, Organisation Cetacea. The three-day residential programme combines classroom-based learning with at-sea practical training, giving participants the theoretical skills required to work as an MMO before putting it into practice observing and identifying real animals in the wild. The course commences with a one-day classroom-based session in Plymouth on the 9th July, before crossing to Santander, passing through one of the top five places in the world to see whales and dolphins - the Bay of Biscay - with the time at sea spent applying the technical skills on deck and observing marine mammals. New publication: Environment and anthropogenic activities influence cetacean habitat use in southeastern Brazil

Environment and anthropogenic activities influence cetacean habitat use in southeastern Brazil. Marine Ecology Progress Series 616: 197–210, 2019. Abstract Investigating the influence of coastal development on marine environments is a priority to maintain healthy seas. Cetaceans are top predators, keystone and umbrella species and thus are good candidate models to evaluate the extent of anthropogenic impacts on coastal habitats. We employed a generalized linear model with spatial eigenvector mapping (SEV-GLM) to understand the influence of environmental and anthropogenic activities on migrant (humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae) and non-migrant (Bryde’s whale Balaenoptera brydei and common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus) cetacean habitat use off Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We hypothesized that both environmental and anthropogenic activities influence their habitat use. Data were collected during 118 boat trips between December 2010 and June 2014. The best SEV-GLM predicted humpback whales would increase linearly with distance to coast, with minimum sea surface temperature (SST) around 19.4−19.8°C and maximum SST around 25.5−26°C, with low variations in chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations. The model also predicted that humpback whales would occur up to 10 km from diving areas, increasing linearly with distance to fishing grounds. The best non-migrant cetacean SEV-GLM predicted that they would occur more frequently around depths from 30−60 m, increasing with low SST and high chl a concentration. For the anthropogenic component, the model predicted that non-migrant cetaceans would occur up to 10 km from fishing grounds. Our study modeled the influence of anthropogenic activities on cetaceans, and indicates specific priority areas for cetacean conservation, contributing at a local and national scale. IMMS Fall Research Internship

The IMMS Research Internship Program is designed as a way for students interested in a career in marine science to gain valuable research experience in a real-world setting. Interns may participate in projects involving bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, and diamondback terrapins. As an intern, you will be trained in all aspects of dolphin photo-ID research as well as any other current research projects at IMMS. Interns will also participate in other operations at IMMS including stranding response, education, and animal care. Our goal is to give interns a well-rounded experience in a variety of areas while providing expert training and experience in marine science research. Interns must: - Commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. The internship can be extended depending on work performance - Be available to work Mon-Fri and must be available for all boat trips. Some field days may fall on the weekends. - Have a strong sense of responsibility, work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to admit mistakes. - Produce high quality research efforts and exhibit strong interpersonal skills Principle Duties include: data entry, learning all research protocols, cropping and sorting photo-ID fin images, learning to use photo-ID programs such as Darwin (fin matching software) and FinBase (Microsoft Access), boat based field research (21' boat), and learn how to use ArcGIS Secondary Duties include: assisting animal care staff, attending marine mammal necropsies, responding to marine mammal and sea turtle strandings, and assisting educational staff Field Days: Interns must be able to spend many hours on the water and on shore in sometimes extreme seasonal conditions. Seasonal temperatures range from over 100 °F in summer to 30 °F in winter. Field days typically exceed eight hours and occur at least two or three times a week. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be 18 or older and must have a genuine interest in marine research. Applicants should be actively pursuing a college degree or be a recent graduate in oceanography, marine science/biology, biology, or a related field. Previous research experience in any capacity is a plus. Applicants must be able and willing to fulfill all duties outlined for this internship program. This is an unpaid position and interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation. Once accepted, IMMS staff will assist interns in finding rooms available to rent, usually with other staff members.
