Marine Acoustic Technician (Multiple roles available) The acoustics team is part of the Gardline Environmental Department and is responsible for providing passive acoustic monitoring and acoustic analysis services for a wide range of activities throughout the offshore industry. These might include but are not limited to mitigation for anthropogenic noise, predictive acoustic models, noise impact assessments, vessel signatures or verification of EIAs. The primary role of the Marine Acoustic Technician is to conduct acoustic surveys through the use of passive acoustic monitoring systems (PAMS) and noise measurement systems during offshore activities both nationally and internationally whilst offshore. Additionally, onshore compilation and preparation of PAMS and noise monitoring reports including the processing of acoustic data is required. However; you will be working alongside experienced personnel and continuous support as well as on the job training of these elements will be provided where required. The successful candidate will be responsible for the appropriate collection and processing of data both at sea and in the office. This role will require you to work in the office (Great Yarmouth), but we have an expectation that you will spend up to 120 days at sea at locations worldwide, during a 12-month period. Applicants will be of degree calibre or equivalent in a relevant discipline and possess an understanding of marine acoustics, including both hardware and field experience. Additionally, familiarity with the use of PAMS, ARUs or other underwater noise monitoring equipment is desirable. Global Ecol Biogeogr. 2018;00:1–15. https://doi.org/10.1111/geb.12850 *Abstract* *Aim*: Deep‐diving cetaceans are oceanic species exposed to multiple anthropogenic pressures including high intensity underwater noise, and knowledge of their distribution is crucial to manage their conservation. Due to intrinsic low densities, wide distribution ranges and limited presence at the sea surface, these species are rarely sighted. Pooling data from multiple visual surveys sharing a common linetransect methodology can increase sightings but requires accounting for heterogeneity in protocols and platforms. *Location*: North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. *Time period*: 1998 to 2015. *Major taxa*: Ziphiidae; Physeteriidae; Kogiidae. *Methods*: About 1,240,000 km of pooled effort provided 630 sightings of ziphiids, 836 of physeteriids and 106 of kogiids. For each taxon, we built a hierarchical model to estimate the effective strip width depending on observation conditions and survey types. We then modelled relative densities in a generalized additive modelling framework. Geographical predictions were limited to interpolations identified with a gap analysis of environmental space coverage. *Results*: Deeper areas of the North Atlantic gyre were mostly environmental extrapolation in the predictions, thereby highlighting gaps in sampling across the different surveys. For the three species groups, the highest relative densities were predicted along continental slopes, particularly in the western North Atlantic Ocean where the Gulf Stream creates dynamic frontal zones and eddies. *Main conclusions*: Pooling a large number of surveys provided the first basin‐wide models of distribution for deep‐diving cetaceans, including several data‐deficient taxa, across the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. New paper: Long-term and seasonal changes of large whale call frequency in the southern Indian Ocean

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 123. https://doi.org/10.1029/2018JC014352 Abstract: In the past decades, in the context of a changing ocean submitted to an increasing human activity, a progressive decrease in the frequencies (pitch) of blue whale vocalizations has been observed worldwide. Its causes, of natural or anthropogenic nature, are still unclear. Based on 7 years of continuous acoustic recordings at widespread sites in the southern Indian Ocean, we show that this observation stands for five populations of large whales. The frequency of selected units of vocalizations of fin, Antarctic, and pygmy blue whales has steadily decreased at a rate of a few tenths of hertz per year since 2002. In addition to this interannual frequency decrease, blue whale vocalizations display seasonal frequency shifts. We show that these intra-annual shifts correlate with seasonal changes in the ambient noise near their call frequency. This ambient noise level, in turn, shows a strong correlation with the seasonal presence of icebergs, which are one of the main sources of oceanic noise in the Southern Hemisphere. Although cause-and-effect relationships are difficult to ascertain, wide-ranging changes in the acoustic environment seem to have a strong impact on the vocal behavior of large baleen whales. Seasonal frequency shifts may be due to short-term changes in the ambient noise, and the interannual frequency decline to long-term changes in the acoustic properties of the ocean and/or in postwhaling changes in whale abundance. Protected Species Observer (PSO)/Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Technician needed

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is in need of experienced PSOs and PAM operators for upcoming projects in the Northwest Atlantic. The primary purpose of these individuals is to reduce the potential for injury or harassment of protected species (marine mammals, sea turtles and sturgeon) during offshore survey and construction activities, through visual and auditory monitoring, as well as implementing mitigation measures as project guidelines require. Depending on the project, the work can require living offshore (for weeks to months at a time), and working on a 24 hour schedule divided among designated staff. Work is estimated to be available starting mid-November. Candidates will be selected based on their experience identifying and documenting Atlantic species of marine mammal. DUTIES INCLUDE: 1. Monitor a designated area for protected species, for up to 4 hours at a time and no more than 12 hours a day; 2. Communicate protected species sightings and detections to the Lead PSO; 3. Accurately record sightings and data on standardized forms associated with daily sighting activities, as well as self audit data prior to submission; 4. Operate and maintain field equipment including Garmin GPS, binoculars with reticles, range finder, and high resolution digital camera with video capabilities; 5. Operate and troubleshoot PAM equipment including tow cables, hydrophone arrays, headphones RF transmitter, Fireface audio interface, Rackmount PC, buffer interface unit and thermal imaging software; 6. Accurately detect and localize protected species using PAMGuard. COMPENSATION: Travel expenses to and from the staging location will be reimbursed. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: 1. A minimum BSc degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences and a minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences (may be waved if demonstrates good performance in previous PSO duties); 2. At least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical experience in observing protected species and/or using acoustic monitoring equipment.; 3. Ability to work well independently and in a team; 4. Skilled in identification of North Atlantic species of marine mammal, sea turtle and sturgeon; 5. All candidates must be NMFS/BOEM approved or have enough experience to be approved to work as a PSO; 6. Experience working on vessels - applicants must be in good health, physically fit and capable of standing for 4 hours, climbing and descending ladders to access monitoring stations, focus continuously alternating with the naked eye and binoculars and to safely navigate slippery surfaces at boat ramps and on deck; 7. Candidates will be required to provide evidence of clearance for sea duty (Norwegian Maritime Directorate (NMD) or equivalent); 8. Offshore Survival and Safety Training is required (Basic Offshore Safety Inductions and Emergency Training (BOSIET) or PST equivalent); 9. Knowledge of computer software applications including: Microsoft Office Suite, with experience filling out data forms in the field and compiling data in tabular and graphical form; 10. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both verbally and written. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Flexibility! **First Call - Submissions of candidate IMMA areas of interest for the Western Indian Ocean and Arabian Seas region** Dear Subscribers, This is to announce the first public call for submissions of Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) areas of interest in the Western Indian Ocean and Arabian Seas region. The deadline for all submissions is by midnight Sunday February 24th, 2019. The IMMA is a global initiative developed by the IUCN Joint SSC/WCPA Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force (IUCN MMPATF). The aim of IMMA classification is to identify and delineate discrete areas of habitat throughout the world's seas and oceans, important for one or more species of marine mammal, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation. This will require the application of a standardized process for the collation and categorization of evidence, using a consistent protocol and agreed methodology. The Mediterranean Sea, Pacific Islands, North East Indian Ocean & South East Asian Seas, and Extended Southern Ocean regions have been sequentially assessed across 2016-2018. The results of these workshops can be accessed via the dedicated IMMA e-Atlas facility www.marinemammalhabitat.org/imma-eatlas The next region to be assessed by invited experts will be held in Salalah, Oman, March 2019, at a specially convened regional IMMA workshop for the Western Indian Ocean and Arabian Seas region. New publication on Mariana Archipelago short-finned pilot whales

Dear MARMAM, We are pleased to announce a new publication on Mariana Archipelago short-finned pilot whales. Short-finned pilot whales (*Globicephala macrorhynchus*) of the Mariana Archipelago: Individual affiliations, movements, and spatial use. Marine Mammal Science. DOI - 10.1111/mms.12567 Abstract: Little is known about short-finned pilot whales (*Globicephala macrorhynchus*) in the western North Pacific outside of Japanese coastal waters. To expand understanding of short-finned pilot whale ecology in the region, we conducted small-boat surveys in 2010−2016 within the Mariana Archipelago to investigate individual associations, movements, spatial use, and dive behavior of short-finned pilot whales. We collected genetic, photo-identification, and satellite-tag data and identified 191 distinctive individuals. A preliminary social network diagram of photo-cataloged individuals revealed a main cluster that comprised 82% of individuals, representing all five mitochondrial DNA haplotypes identified within the population. Kernel density estimates for tagged short-finned pilot whales (n = 11) during summer were used to identify areas with the highest probability of use (10% probability density contour), core area (50%) and home range (95%). The area with highest probability of use by short-finned pilot whales was off the northwest side of Guam. Satellite tag data also suggest that some individuals are island-associated year-round. Data from five location-dive tags demonstrated that the short-finned pilot whales dove more often to intermediate depths at twilight and night, suggesting they may target prey that forage on the deep scattering layer as it migrates to and from the surface. Acta Tropica, 190:220-227. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actatropica.2018.11.021 In this manuscript we tested skin, oral and genital mucosal beta-actin PCR-positive samples from 109 free-ranging Brazilian cetaceans using a universal herpesvirus DNA polymerase PCR. Herpesvirus-positive skin samples from a Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis), a dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima), a Bolivian river dolphin (Inia boliviensis), and a lingual sample from an Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) were histologically evaluated. Additional tissue samples from these animals were also PCR-positive for HV, including a novel sequence obtained from the dwarf sperm whale’s stomach and mesenteric lymph node. Four novel HV species were detected in the Guiana dolphin (one), the dwarf sperm whale (two) and the Bolivian river dolphin (one). The cutaneous lesions (marked, focally extensive, chronic proliferative dermatitis) of the Guiana dolphin and the Bolivian river dolphin were similar to previous HV reports in cetaceans, despite the absence of intranuclear inclusion bodies. This is the largest HV survey in South American cetaceans and the first detection of HV infection in riverine dolphins worldwide. The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) works with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center through a cooperative agreement with the University of Hawaii to conduct research and recovery activities on Hawaiian monk seals. JIMAR hires program staff through the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) and is currently seeking applicants for *two separate recruitments* (*Biological Research Technician and Biological Research Assistant) *for the 2019 field research season. Selected individuals will study the endangered Hawaiian monk seal in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This work is part of a long-term annual Hawaiian monk seal population monitoring and conservation program by NMFS and includes: conducting trend counts, tagging seals, identifying individual seals by tags, scars, natural markings, and applied bleach marks, monitoring reproduction, survival, injuries, entanglements, migration, vaccinating against morbillivirus, performing necropsies, collecting scat & spew samples for food habitat, parasite load, and hormonal analysis, collecting tissue samples for DNA analysis, and removing debris capable of entangling seals and other wildlife. Behavior data are also collected at some sites. Researchers at some sites may participate in shark mitigation activities. General information about the program can be found at: http://www.pifsc.noaa.gov/hawaiian_monk_seal/ The number of positions and/or continuation of the program are subject to funding. These positions will be for all or a subset of the 6 major monk seal sub-populations in the NWHI. Fieldwork is accomplished by 2-4 member teams in remote camps. Each team will include a paid leader and either paid assistants and volunteers or up to two volunteers assisting a paid leader. Volunteer positions will be recruited for in a separate announcement. Researchers live in either wall tents or buildings at the various sites. All sites are accessible by ship (2-8 day travel; 830-2,300 km from Honolulu), and one is accessible by plane. Few (if any) resupply opportunities exist and communication with others outside of field sites is limited throughout deployment due to the remoteness and lack of infrastructure. The employment period will include approximately one month of training and packing in Honolulu. Once the field season is over, an additional ~1-2 weeks of employment will take place in Honolulu to clean up gear and summarize data. Dates are subject to change, but the positions are tentatively scheduled to begin in early March with a field deployment date in mid April. Field staff will be deployed for approximately 4.5-5 months with a tentative return date in late August or early September. The position end date is tentatively scheduled for some time in mid-September. Applicants must be flexible in their availability as dates could change, including unforeseen delays due to inclement weather and ship delays. Travel to and from Honolulu and food, lodging, and transportation in Honolulu before deployment are not provided. Transportation between Honolulu and field sites and food and lodging in the field are provided. Due to unforeseen circumstances, departure delays could result in longer periods in Honolulu that may result in additional uncompensated living expenses. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien, and must be able to meet both the U.S. Department of Commerce and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access the work location, and also the health requirements to board a NOAA vessel.
