The Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) works with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center through a cooperative agreement with the University of Hawaii to conduct research and recovery activities on Hawaiian monk seals. JIMAR hires program staff through the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) and is currently seeking applicants for *two separate recruitments* (*Biological Research Technician and Biological Research Assistant) *for the 2019 field research season. Selected individuals will study the endangered Hawaiian monk seal in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This work is part of a long-term annual Hawaiian monk seal population monitoring and conservation program by NMFS and includes: conducting trend counts, tagging seals, identifying individual seals by tags, scars, natural markings, and applied bleach marks, monitoring reproduction, survival, injuries, entanglements, migration, vaccinating against morbillivirus, performing necropsies, collecting scat & spew samples for food habitat, parasite load, and hormonal analysis, collecting tissue samples for DNA analysis, and removing debris capable of entangling seals and other wildlife. Behavior data are also collected at some sites. Researchers at some sites may participate in shark mitigation activities. General information about the program can be found at: http://www.pifsc.noaa.gov/hawaiian_monk_seal/ The number of positions and/or continuation of the program are subject to funding. These positions will be for all or a subset of the 6 major monk seal sub-populations in the NWHI. Fieldwork is accomplished by 2-4 member teams in remote camps. Each team will include a paid leader and either paid assistants and volunteers or up to two volunteers assisting a paid leader. Volunteer positions will be recruited for in a separate announcement. Researchers live in either wall tents or buildings at the various sites. All sites are accessible by ship (2-8 day travel; 830-2,300 km from Honolulu), and one is accessible by plane. Few (if any) resupply opportunities exist and communication with others outside of field sites is limited throughout deployment due to the remoteness and lack of infrastructure. The employment period will include approximately one month of training and packing in Honolulu. Once the field season is over, an additional ~1-2 weeks of employment will take place in Honolulu to clean up gear and summarize data. Dates are subject to change, but the positions are tentatively scheduled to begin in early March with a field deployment date in mid April. Field staff will be deployed for approximately 4.5-5 months with a tentative return date in late August or early September. The position end date is tentatively scheduled for some time in mid-September. Applicants must be flexible in their availability as dates could change, including unforeseen delays due to inclement weather and ship delays. Travel to and from Honolulu and food, lodging, and transportation in Honolulu before deployment are not provided. Transportation between Honolulu and field sites and food and lodging in the field are provided. Due to unforeseen circumstances, departure delays could result in longer periods in Honolulu that may result in additional uncompensated living expenses. Stanistreet, Simone Baumann-Pickering, and Danielle M. Cholewiak Abstract True’s beaked whales (*Mesoplodon mirus*) were encountered on two separate shipboard surveys on 24 July 2016 and 16 September 2017 in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Recordings were made using a hydrophone array towed 300 m behind the ship. In 2016, three different groups were sighted within 1500 m of the ship; clicks were recorded for 26 min. In 2017, a single group of five whales was tracked over the course of five hours in which the ship maintained a distance <4000 m from the group. A total of 2938 frequency-modulated (FM) clicks and 7 buzzes were recorded from both encounters. Plausible inter-click-intervals (ICIs) were calculated from 2763 clicks, and frequency and duration measurements were calculated from 2150 good quality FM clicks. The median peak frequencies were 43.1 kHz (2016, n= 718) and 43.5 kHz (2017, n= 1432). Median ICIs were 0.17 s (2016) and 0.19 s (2017). The spectra and measurements of the recorded clicks closely resemble Gervais’ beaked whale clicks (*Mesoplodon europaeus*) and distinguishing between the two species in acoustic data sets proves difficult. The acoustic behavior of True’s beaked whales was previously unknown; this study provides a description of echolocation clicks produced by this species. The Indian Ocean humpback dolphin may represent a useful comparative model to the bottlenose dolphin (*Tursiops* sp.) to provide insights into the functional anatomy of the sound production in dolphins, since these coastal dolphins exhibit similar body size and share similarities on acoustic behavior. The general arrangement of sound generating structures, that is, air sacs and muscles, was similar in both the bottlenose dolphin and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin. The main difference between the two species existed in a small left posterior branch of the melon in the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin*,* which was not found in the bottlenose dolphin and might reflect an adaptation of directionality for high frequency communication sounds as seen in some other delphinids (e.g., *Lagenorhynchus* sp., *Grampus griseus*). Thus, this may be the main reason for the asymmetry of the sound production structures in dolphins. Additionally, the longer rostrum in Indian Ocean humpback dolphins might suggest a more directional echolocation beam compared to the Lahille's bottlenose dolphin. Abstract: Throughout the distribution of the bottlenose dolphin *Tursiops truncatus*, the occurrence, abundance, local distribution, and residential patterns are highly variable according to the pressure of the habitat where sighting occurs. In Venezuela, a study has been developed for the first time describing these aspects for the western of Aragua State (central coast of the country). From 2004 to 2008, 100 field surveys (30 km long) were conducted; the daily encounter ratio ranged from 0.79 to 1.11 dolphins/survey (Permanova,P<0.01); the abundance was 18.70 (± 9.95) dolphins/transect (relative abundance of 0.62 dolphins/km), registering an increase since April 2007 by income of individuals (pseudo-t, P < 0.05). The sightings covered 56.63 km2, 90%of study area. Eighty-six dolphins were photo-identified (identification of new dolphins was constant). Residency analysis was limited to September 2006–August 2007 (continuous sampling); 7 (20.59%) residents (part of a group of 12), 9 (26.47%) occasional visitors ("neighboring group" and "outsiders"), and 18 (52.94%) transients were found. The study area is an open coast with shelter (bay) and prey that houses a resident group (sighted throughout the study) that was occasionally visited by a "neighbor" and occasional groups between October and February, and by transients throughout the year. This resident group inhabits the main bay and the coastal axis, and was associated (~ 75% of sightings) with *Stenella frontalis* (sighted throughout the year).We point out the importance of the area for both research and conservation due to the presence of dolphins throughout the year. New publication: How vulnerable are cetaceans to climate change? Developing and testing a new index

Abstract Climate change is altering chemical, physical and biological processes in the marine environment. Observed impacts driven by climate have been recorded and include changes in the geographical distribution, timing of seasonal migrations, breeding biology and behaviour of species. A number of qualitative and quantitative methodologies have been developed over the years to assess the vulnerability of animals to climate change. However, for marine species, the development and application of indices is recent, especially for large vertebrates such as marine mammals. In this context, the present study develops a trait-based climate change vulnerability index and applies it to seven cetacean species in the Madeira archipelago (Northeast Atlantic). The development of the index included the selection of sensitivity and exposure factors, the definition of each factor’s score range, and the computation of results. It showed that the sperm whale (*Physeter macrocephalus*), the fin whale (*Balaenoptera physalus*), the Atlantic population of bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops truncatus*) and the Bryde’s whale (*Balaenoptera brydei*) were the most vulnerable species. The short-beaked common dolphin (*Delphinus delphis*), the island-associated bottlenose dolphins and the Atlantic spotted dolphin (*Stenella frontalis*) showed the lowest vulnerability to climate change. The outputs are consistent with previously proposed effects on whales and dolphins, considering their ecological similarities and exposure to environmental factors. This study shows that the developed index contributes to prioritize vulnerable species to climate change and to identify knowledge gaps in species ecological traits. The index results can contribute to inform policy makers in the definition of measures for species conservation. New article: Common dolphins in the Gulf of Corinth are Critically Endangered

Dear colleagues, please find below the link to our recently published paper regarding the conservation status assessment of a Critically Endangered subpopulation of common dolphins in the Gulf of Corinth, Greece. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/aqc.2963 Abstract Regional populations (“subpopulations”) of globally abundant species can be exposed to human impacts that threaten their viability. Given the value of cetacean subpopulations as evolutionary significant units, keystone and umbrella species, it is important to assess their conservation status separately and propose area‐specific conservation measures. We used a threat assessment process and applied IUCN Red List criteria to a regional population of common dolphins Delphinus delphis in the semi‐enclosed Gulf of Corinth, Greece. We compiled subpopulation‐specific information about abundance and trends, estimated the geographic range of the subpopulation (area of occupancy and extent of occurrence), and calculated the probability of extinction through stochastic modelling. The subpopulation qualified as Endangered according to criteria A (population size reduction over three generations) and B (geographic range), and as Critically Endangered under criteria C (population size and decline) and D (very small or restricted population). The probability of extinction was estimated to be ≥50% in three generations, qualifying the subpopulation as Critically Endangered under criterion E (quantitative analysis). We concluded that the subpopulation should be classified as Critically Endangered. Considering the high extinction risk faced by common dolphins in the Gulf of Corinth, we recommend that: (a) immediate action is taken to mitigate anthropogenic activities known or suspected to have a negative impact on cetaceans in the area (particularly commercial fishing); and (b) a marine protected area is established in the Gulf of Corinth as a management tool for enforcing conservation action and facilitating the recovery of common dolphins. We are looking to build a qualified team of responders and rehabilitators to work in our growing Marine Department. California Wildlife Center is located in Malibu, California, and responds to reports of stranded marine mammals 365 days a year. Our rehabilitation facility is active during the region’s period of highest strandings, which is January through July. Job Overview This is a full-time (40 hours/week) non-exempt seasonal position, running from January through mid-June. The MPA will perform all duties of a marine mammal rehabilitator including, but not limited to: large animal restraint, patient intakes, oversee and perform marine mammal husbandry tasks, administer medication and fluid therapies, gavage feeding of seals and sea lions, assist with patient releases, maintain all rehabilitation equipment and enclosures. Complexity and simplicity in environmental communication. Marine Policy. 99:170-172. Abstract This article discusses the tendency within environmental communication to homogenise diverse situations. Utilising the case of whale conservation it describes how actors on both sides of the whaling debate utilise the 'super-whale' - a homogenised discursive construct. The article argues that there are pragmatic advantages to such framing of environmental situations but also costs. In the case of whale conservation, the super-whale maintains focus on whaling rather than other, arguably more pressing, threats to whale species. More generally, utilising such framing tactics arguably prevent the voicing of new narratives about the global social order. Behavioral Ecology Cooperative care and defense of young are hypothesized to be foundational to the societies of several species, including the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). However, the extent of allocare among sperm whales and the mechanisms driving it have not been well-characterized. Sperm whale social units are matrilineally based, making kin selection a likely key driver of allocare, but the relationship between kinship and calf care is essentially unknown. We investigate calf care in the context of kinship, by combining association and interaction data with genetic profiles for 16 calves from 7 eastern Caribbean social units. Mothers were the primary associate for 62.5% of calves, and the primary nurse for 87.5%, so behavioral observations are not always sufficient for assigning maternity. Babysitting and allonursing were frequent in some cases, particularly for calves less than a year old. Within social units, babysitting rates were correlated with relatedness (rs = 0.4, P < 0.05), and allonurses were, on average, closer maternal relatives of the calves they nursed than were available females who were not allonurses (Δr = 0.14, P = 0.054). Exceptions to the overall positive relationship between allocare and kinship suggest that additional factors influencing allocare among sperm whales may include reciprocity, group augmentation and gaining maternal experience. Animal Behaviour 145: 131-140. Vocal learning often results in distinct dialects among individuals or groups, but the forces selecting for these phenomena remain unclear. Female sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, and their dependent offspring live in matrilineally based social units, and the units associate within sympatric clans. The clans have distinctive dialects of codas (patterns of clicks), as do, to a lesser extent, the units within clans. We examined the similarity of coda repertoires of individuals and units from the eastern Caribbean and related these to patterns of kinship and social association. Similarity in coda repertoires was not discernibly correlated with close kinship or association rates for either individuals or units (matrix correlation coefficients <0.12 for all tests using whole repertoires and data from all units). This supports the prevailing hypothesis that these vocalizations are culturally transmitted. The lack of correlation also indicates that vocal learning may occur broadly within clans, rather than preferentially from close kin or close social associates within social units, or that biases in vocal learning at lower levels of social structure are diffused by clan-level processes, such as conformity. Finally, an absence of signals of kinship in vocalization patterns suggests that a different mechanism, perhaps familiarity through repeated association, mediates kin selection among sperm whales.

Call for Marine Mammal Research Interns in Kep, Cambodia.

Call for Marine Mammal Research Interns in Kep, Cambodia. Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is an NGO based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. The organisation has many facets, including working to stop illegal fishing practices, ecological and social science research and collecting data to use in the implementation of conservation legislation. In September 2017, MCC introduced *The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project,* in collaboration with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. The project's primary aim is to collect data on abundance, distribution and residency to delineate and protect critical habitats for the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in Cambodia's Kep Archipelago. The project also has an education and outreach focus, to increase local marine mammal awareness and research capacity. At present, we are looking for marine mammal research interns to join the team. *Project activities: * · a minimum of 3 observational land surveys per week, using a Theodolite and Pythagoras software; · a minimum of 1 observational boat survey per week; · photo-identification techniques using Discovery software; · passive acoustic monitoring using a C-POD and CPOD.exe software; · social science techniques; · data entry, processing and analysis; · education and outreach; · running a marine mammal stranding network; · scientific writing for peer-reviewed journals and government reports; · designing marine mammal legislation. *Basic internship training schedule* Session 1: Introduction to MCC and The Cambodian Marine Mammal Conservation Project. Session 2: Research method training on observational land and boat surveying techniques. Session 3: Marine mammal identification and behaviour training. Session 8: Practice observational land and boat survey. Session 9: Theodolite introduction and training. Session 10: Pythagoras and Theodolite station setting training. You will also become involved in other project related activities, depending on your interest, skill set and length of stay. *Internship requirements:* We are looking for dedicated, motivated and hard-working interns, able to commit for a minimum internship period of three months, between January and June 2018. We are looking for those who will commit to early mornings and late nights, with a keen interest in marine mammals and their conservation. *Project site description:* The project is based on the island of Koh Ach Seh, a 40-minute boat trip from Kep Town, Cambodia. The island is inhabited only by MCC, a team made up of a mixture of interdisciplinary international and local staff. The accommodation and facilities on the island are basic but well-maintained. You will be in shared and catered accommodation with fellow interns and staff members. All project related resources are provided. *Application process and fees:* There is an internship fee of $300 USD/week for the 1st and 2nd months, $250/week for the 3rd and 4th months, and $200/week for the 5th and 6th months. The fee covers: · all food, water, accommodation; · transport to and from the mainland to the project island; · marine mammal research training; · scuba diving (if qualified); · and the opportunity to get involved in activities and training at MCC, such as seahorse research or artificial reef management.
