Dear Marmamers, We would like to request applications for the role of Whale Heritage Sites Programme Assistant (volunteer internship); 22 January – 23 March 2018: *Overview* An initiative of the World Cetacean Alliance, Whale Heritage Sites (WHS) are aimed at increasing the protection and conservation of cetaceans and their habitats while contributing to sustainable livelihoods, the arts, science and education. Whale Heritage Site status is granted to those places around the world where cetaceans are celebrated through art, education, research and cultural events; where sustainable practices and livelihoods are continually improved to ensure the health of cetacean habitats and the long-term economic health of human communities; and where respectful coexistence with cetaceans is supported through law, policy and cooperation. The person in this role will report directly to the CEO, receive in-situ training, and work closely with colleagues at WCA Headquarters. The role is available from 22 January – 23 March 2018, and will take place at WCA Headquarters, Brighton, United Kingdom. The WCA is unable to cover personal expenses. *Responsibilities* 1. Build relationships, engage community stakeholders working to meet the WHS criteria, and represent the WHS Programme. 2. Encourage and support collaborations between prospective WHS stakeholders and experts and advisors from within and outside the World Cetacean Alliance. 3. Develop and provide resources to assist stakeholders in applicant sites. 4. Further develop the charter of shortlisted sites. 5. Communicate progress across the WHS network through media and social media. 6. Work alongside WCA staff to set strategy and guide the programme. 7. Liaise with WCA staff to ensure coordinated planning, collaborative work efforts, integrated programming and shared success towards agreed goals. *Knowledge* 1. New paper on sex segregation in bottlenose dolphins

We are pleased to announce the publication of our new article in Behavioral Ecology: *Sexual segregation in Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins is driven by female avoidance of males* Allison A. Galezo, Ewa Krzyszczyk, and Janet Mann Sexual segregation is widespread in mammals, although the proximate causes are poorly understood in monomorphic species. Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (*Tursiops aduncus*), which exhibit a high degree of fission–fusion dynamics, offer a useful lens to examine the ecological and social drivers of sexual segregation. While ecological hypotheses suggest that sexual segregation is a by-product of sex-specific ecological preferences (e.g., related to habitat, foraging, or predator avoidance), the social hypothesis proffers that segregation results from same-sex preferences (e.g., due to cooperative benefits) and/or opposite-sex avoidance (e.g., due to competitive or exploitative interactions). Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin females range from nearly solitary to highly sociable. Males associate in alliances that cooperate to sequester individual females and exclude competing males. Given evidence for allied sexual coercion, our primary hypothesis was that sexual segregation is driven by female avoidance of aggressive males. However, given robust evidence for sex-biased foraging tactics, ecological factors likely also contribute. Using the Sexual Segregation and Aggregation Statistic with 17,468 sighting records spanning 31 years, we found strong sexual segregation. Unique to our work, we analyzed the direction of joins and leaves between males and females from focal observations (N = 10,715 fission–fusion events, 87 females, 111 males) to determine which sex drives sexual segregation. Females drove segregation by rarely joining and often leaving males. Although ecological factors likely reinforce sexual segregation, social factors predominate. This study demonstrates a sex-bias in fission–fusion dynamics in a socially complex wild mammal population and offers strong empirical support to the social hypothesis of sexual segregation. Whale and Dolphin Conservation (NA) Field Research Internship

WDC North America, located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, offers internships and field volunteer positions, providing research, policy, education and advocacy experience in working for an international non-profit organization. We will be accepting applications for our spring positions (beginning as early as April 1st) until midnight EST on Sunday, February 4th, 2018 and summer positions (beginning as early as May 1st) until midnight EST on Sunday, March 4th, 2018. Internships are offered to qualified applicants throughout the year, allowing each participant to become proficient at field data collection, educational outreach, and conservation issues of marine mammals. Interns may also assist staff in completing various tasks pertaining to our focal projects. The WDC internship/volunteer program aims to give participants exposure to all aspects of working with a conservation non-profit organization. Successful candidates are tasked with everything from field research to office administration. All interns gain experience with public speaking by interacting with passengers aboard whale watching vessels, participating in school talks, and other public outreach events throughout the year. Additionally, interns will assist with written communication efforts including social media, blogs, and supporter directed communications. Other potential opportunities include attending workshops/conferences and responding to stranded marine mammals, though these are not guaranteed opportunities. This program exposes interns to real world experiences that will help them develop the skills and understanding needed to succeed in the field of marine mammal conversation and research. Participants will gain an in-depth perspective of this field and a better understanding of where their interests lie. Through this internship, a number of skills are developed including analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. As part of the field work experience, interns will learn species identification, behavioral sequencing, data collection and photo identification research techniques on marine mammals in the Gulf of Maine. They will also have the opportunity to go out on commercial whale watching boats several times a week (field season is April through October) to photograph and record sightings of humpback, finback, and minke whales, as well as other notable marine wildlife. The frequency of fieldwork is weather dependent. Days not in the field will be spent at the office uploading photos and data into our photo identification database or working on any tasks that may be assigned. At the end of the program our hope is that interns will be able to leave with a comprehensive understanding of both the exciting and routine aspects of what it takes to research and conserve marine mammals. There is no fee or compensation for the internship/volunteer positions. Participants must arrange for their own transportation to and from Plymouth and provide their own food. Limited housing with a shared bedroom is available on site for a monthly fee of $300 USD, which is strictly to offset the cost of housing. Assistance can be provided in finding alternate housing at the request of the applicant, and those that can provide their own housing are encouraged to apply. WDC is willing to help qualified students obtain credits for the program through their college or university. The program requires a minimum commitment of 12 weeks, with the possibility of extending the term on a case-by-case basis. The internship is a full time position requiring open and flexible availability. *Marine Mammals of Maine 2018 Summer Internship Opportunity* Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME) is a non-profit organization federally authorized to respond to live and dead marine mammals and sea turtles between Kittery and Rockland, Maine. MMoME covers some of the busiest seal stranding coastline, totaling nearly 300 live and dead animals annually. MMoME operates a pinniped triage and rehabilitation center. Our mission also heavily encompasses research, education and outreach, and is dedicated to raising awareness about marine mammals and environmental conservation. MMoME is seeking 6 motivated, flexible and independent interns for the months of May through August, or May through October. Interns and volunteers are critical in fulfilling our mission, and are given the unique opportunity to participate in a variety of activities. The internship is based out of midcoast Maine (Harpswell), though travel throughout our response region and the Northeast will be necessary. Interns must be adaptable and comfortable with an unpredictable and changing work environment as stranding response and patient care frequently change. Interns will be required to dedicate a minimum of 40-50 hours per week to the internship, and work holidays and weekends. This internship is unpaid, though seasonal job opportunities are available in the area. *KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* · *ANIMAL RESPONSE:* Respond to live and dead cetacean and pinniped strandings to collect Level A data, perform health assessments, and monitor, relocate, collect for humane euthanasia, or rescue as triage and rehabilitation resources allow. Carcass collection for disposal or necropsy will also be required. · *IN-HOUSE PATIENT CARE:* Assist with all aspects relating to the care of sick, injured and abandoned pinnipeds undergoing short-term, or long-term care at our center. Tasks range from meal prep, tube-feeding, assisting with medical procedures, animal restraint for exams, running lab samples, medical record maintenance, cleaning, and transport to long-term care facilities. · *NECROPSY:* Assist with necropsy of fresh dead pinnipeds and cetaceans, and transport carcasses to partner organizations. · *EDUCATION AND OUTREACH:* Give presentations to the public about the organization, attend outreach events, and help create educational materials. · *INDEPENDENT PROJECT:* Each intern will design an independent project relating to education/outreach, a research project using MMoME data, social media/technology/graphic design, or other aspects of marine mammal response, care or non-profit work. · *OTHER TASKS:* Additional time during this internship will be spent on data entry, fundraising, maintenance of the triage center, and other tasks as needed. *REQUIREMENTS:* · The internship is open to undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated (within 2 years) from an accredited college or university (this internship is not yet designed for those pursuing DVM degrees). · The ideal candidate is working towards a career in marine mammal science, veterinary technology, pre-veterinary, marine biology, environmental education, or other related fields. · Must commit to at least three months, and be available from May 15– August 15, or October 15. 2018 Northcoast Marine Mammal Center Internship Announcement The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center is seeking applicants for several internships working with stranded Marine Mammals. These positions are unpaid, and no housing is provided. Applicants will be living and working in Crescent City, CA. Program Description: The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center has an exciting opportunity for individuals who are interested in increasing their experience and knowledge of marine mammals and their behavior. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in marine mammal rescues, releases and other field responses as available. In addition, interns will assist in animal care duties (animal intake, feed preparations, medical charting, medication administration, wound care, pen cleaning and other animal husbandry duties as needed) for on-site patients. Interns will also assist with events, fundraising and other administrative duties. Intern Responsibilities & Qualifications: The internship is open to all applicants 21 years of age or older, with an avid interest in marine biology, zoology, general biology, policy or a related field. If the intern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they are responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution. Interns must be available to work for a minimum of 3 months, 5 days a week, at least 40 hours per week. Work schedule must be flexible and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible for obtaining housing and transportation. Applicants should demonstrate excellent communication skills and have practical computer knowledge with programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. This internship position involves a fair amount of physical activity, such as: cleaning, lifting, restraining and moving animals. Announcement of travel grant to Comparative Cognition through the Kuczaj Memorial Travel Grant

Greetings: Applications are currently being accepted for the Kuczaj Memorial Travel Grant, which is given to students attending the Conference on Comparative Cognition. The grant is administered in memory of Dr. Stan Kuczaj, who was a leader in the study of comparative animal cognition, particularly within marine mammals. Stan believed in pursuing challenging topics in human and animal cognition with rigor, candor, and the spirit of intellectual adventure. The Kuczaj Memorial Travel Grant is administered with the goal of preserving and promoting Stan's interests and beliefs in scientific pursuit. Applicants for the Kuczaj Memorial Travel Grant must: 1) be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of the application, 2) have their abstract accepted for presentation at the Conference on Comparative Cognition, 3) submit their abstract for evaluation and ranking, and 4) provide evidence of graduate enrollment. The Kuczaj Memorial Travel Grant is determined through a competitive ranking process based upon the quality of the abstracts submitted. Grants are for $500 in travel allowances to be applied toward conference fees, food and lodging, or travel expenses. Two grants will be awarded and grantees will be selected and notified of the award by March 15, 2018. New publication: Call rhythms in harbor seal pup

Ravignani, A. (2018) Spontaneous rhythms in a harbor seal pup calls. BMC Research Notes 11(3), pp.1-4. Abstract. Timing and rhythm (i.e. temporal structure) are crucial, though historically neglected, dimensions of animal communication. When investigating these in non-human animals, it is often difficult to balance experimental control and ecological validity. Here I present the first step of an attempt to balance the two, focusing on the timing of vocal rhythms in a harbor seal pup (Phoca vitulina). Collection of this data had a clear aim: To find spontaneous vocal rhythms in this individual in order to design individually-adapted and ecologically-relevant stimuli for a later playback experiment.The calls of one seal pup were recorded. The audio recordings were annotated using Praat, a free software to analyze vocalizations in humans and other animals. The annotated onsets and offsets of vocalizations were then imported in a Python script. The script extracted three types of timing information: the duration of calls, the intervals between calls’ onsets, and the intervals between calls’ maximum-intensity peaks. Based on the annotated data, available to download, I provide simple descriptive statistics for these temporal measures, and compare their distributions. EDMAKTUB is looking for applicants to join its Whale Research Project on the coast of Barcelona: Fin Whale Project 2018

EDMAKTUB Association is a non-profit organizati[AL1] on that studies Fin Whales and the conditions that allow them to feed on the coast between Barcelona and Tarragona. Not only whales but also many other species of cetaceans, sea birds, fish and sea turtles visit the area from mid-February to mid-June. EDMAKTUB collects information about their presence and behavior, as well as biological and oceanographic samples.
