Dear MARMAM, We are looking for research assistants to help with aerial surveys in the states of Sinaloa and Nayarit (Mexico) to investigate the seasonal distribution and density of humpback whales in this region of Pacific Mexico. This work will contribute to a project focused on the study of the spatial ecology of humpback whales in the "mainland Mexico" wintering area and quantifying the risk of vessel collision, in an area where major port expansions and constructions are planned. Applicants MUST have previous aerial survey experience involving marine mammals, with a preference for experience with cetaceans. There will be the additional possibility for the the right candidate, and for those interested, to stay for an extended period to partake in dedicated cetacean vessel surveys until the end of March 2018. New publication: relatedness and socio-genetic links in short-finned pilot whales

Dear MARMAM community, On behalf of my coauthors, I would like to announce a recent publication examining links between social and genetic structure in the Hawaiian population of short-finned pilot whales. Van Cise, AM, KK Martien, SD Mahaffy, RW Baird, DL Webster, JH Fowler, EM Oleson, PA Morin. 2017. *Familial social structure and socially-driven genetic differentiation in Hawaiian short-finned pilot whales.* Molecular Ecology 26(23): 6730-6741. *Abstract:* Social structure can have a significant impact on divergence and evolution within species, especially in the marine environment, which has few environmental boundaries to dispersal. On the other hand, genetic structure can affect social structure in many species, through an individual preference towards associating with relatives. One social species, the short-finned pilot whale (*Globicephala macrorhynchus*), has been shown to live in stable social groups for periods of at least a decade. Using mitochondrial control sequences from 242 individuals and single nucleotide polymorphisms from 106 individuals, we examine population structure among geographic and social groups of short-finned pilot whales in the Hawaiian Islands, and test for links between social and genetic structure. Our results show that there are at least two geographic populations in the Hawaiian Islands: a Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) population and a Northwestern Hawaiian Islands/Pelagic population (*F*ST and ΦST *p *< .001), as well as an eastern MHI community and a western MHI community (*F*ST *p *= .009). We find genetically driven social structure, or high relatedness among social units and clusters (*p *< .001), and a positive relationship between relatedness and association between individuals (*p *< .0001). Further, socially organized clusters are genetically distinct, indicating that social structure drives genetic divergence within the population, likely through restricted mate selection ( *F*ST *p *= .05). This genetic divergence among social groups can make the species less resilient to anthropogenic or ecological disturbance. Conservation of this species therefore depends on understanding links among social structure, genetic structure and ecological variability within the species. CetaceaLab volunteer program 2018

Cetacea Lab is a land based whale research facility located along the remote north coast of British Columbia, Canada. We are now accepting applications for the 2018 field season from May until the end of September. All positions are for 1 to 2 months duration. There is a weekly fee for food. These are volunteer/intern positions to help with the collection of data on the habitat use and abundance of northern resident/transient killer whales, humpback and fin whales. Both the Lab and out camp are located in areas of high abundance of all 3 species. Due to our extreme remote location applicants need to be in good physical condition, able to participate with the daily routine of living off the grid and comfortable sleeping in a tent in the wilderness of BC. There is a lot of hard physical work that will come with this position, you must be fit without any physical injuries. There are no roads, very limited Internet access, very limited medical service and power is completely off the grid. - Daily shifts involve scanning for whales, documenting all sightings and when possible to take identification pictures of whales - Listening and recording all whale vocalizations that are transmitted to the lab facility from our network of hydrophone stations * - Data entry from land based and marine vessel based surveys * - Identification work of all whales from photographs taken in the field * - There will also be a lot of heavy lifting and moving over uneven rocky terrain, chopping wood ( our only source of heat) and assistance with the physical maintenance of hydrophone stations. - Experience with carpentry, electronics, IT, social media, website building and environmental communications would be a valuable asset. Reijnders, Jenny Cremer, Erik Meesters, Roger Kirkwood, Lasse Fast Jensen, Armin Jeβ, Anders Galatius, Jonas Teilmann, Geert Aarts Published: January 3, 2018https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0189674 Read the full publication via: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0189674 Abstract Terrestrial and marine wildlife populations have been severely reduced by hunting, fishing and habitat destruction, especially in the last centuries. Although management regulations have led to the recovery of some populations, the underlying processes are not always well understood. This study uses a 40-year time series of counts of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) in the Wadden Sea to study these processes, and demonstrates the influence of historical regional differences in management regimes on the recovery of this population. While the Wadden Sea is considered one ecologically coupled zone, with a distinct harbour seal population, the area is divided into four geo-political regions i.e. the Netherlands, Lower Saxony including Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark. Gradually, seal hunting was banned between 1962 and 1977 in the different regions. Counts of moulting harbour seals and pup counts, obtained during aerial surveys between 1974 and 2014, show a population growth from approximately 4500 to 39,000 individuals. Population growth models were developed to assess if population growth differed between regions, taking into account two Phocine Distemper Virus (PDV) epizootics, in 1988 and 2002 which seriously affected the population. After a slow start prior to the first epizootic, the overall population grew exponentially at rates close to assumed maximum rates of increase in a harbour seal population. Recently, growth slowed down, potentially indicative of approaching carrying capacity. Regional differences in growth rates were demonstrated, with the highest recovery in Netherlands after the first PDV epizootic (i.e. 17.9%), suggesting that growth was fuelled by migration from the other regions, where growth remained at or below the intrinsic growth rate (13%). The seals' distribution changed, and although the proportion of seals counted in the German regions declined, they remained by far the most important pupping region, with approximately 70% of all pups being born there. It is hypothesised that differences in hunting regime, preceding the protection in the 1960's and 1970's, created unbalance in the distribution of breeding females throughout the Wadden Sea, which prevailed for decades. Breeding site fidelity promoted the growth in pup numbers at less affected breeding sites, while recolonisation of new breeding areas would be suppressed by the philopatry displayed by the animals born there. This study shows that for long-lived species, variable management regimes in this case hunting regulations, across a species' range can drive population dynamics for several generations. ***Reminder - Submissions of candidate IMMA areas of interest for the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas** * Dear Subscribers, This is an reminder for submissions of Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) areas of interest in the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas. The deadline for all submissions is by midnight *Sunday February 25th 2018* . The IMMA is a global initiative developed by the IUCN Joint SSC/WCPA Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force (IUCN-MMPATF). The aim of IMMA classification is to identify and delineate discrete areas of habitat throughout the world's seas and oceans, important for one or more species of marine mammal, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation. This will require the application of a standardized process for the collation and categorization of evidence, using a consistent protocol and agreed methodology. The Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Islands regions were assessed in 2016 and 2017. The results of these workshops can now be accessed via the dedicated IMMA e-Atlas facility www.marinemammalhabitat.org/imma-eatlas The next region to be assessed by invited experts will be held in Kota Kinabalu - Malaysia - during March 2018, at a specially convened Regional IMMA Workshop for the North East Indian Ocean and South East Asian Seas. New publication: Cetaceans off the western Eyre Peninsula, Great Australian Bight

Occurrence, distribution and abundance of cetaceans off the western Eyre Peninsula in the Great Australian Bight. Deep Sea Research II https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr2.2017.11.006 Abstract This study provides the first assessment of the occurrence, distribution and abundance of cetaceans in shelf and coastal waters off the western Eyre Peninsula, eastern Great Australian Bight, South Australia. We undertook aerial line transect surveys to estimate the abundance of common dolphins, and to assess the occurrence and distribution of other small and large cetaceans. Two along shore surveys were also flown to assess occurrence of endangered southern right whales in coastal waters. Five cetacean species were detected: seven southern right whales, three humpback whales, one minke whale (unknown species), 71 schools of common dolphins, and 14 schools of bottlenose dolphins. Abundance of common dolphins was estimated to be 20,000–22,000 using distance sampling methods with densities of 0.67–0.73 dolphin/km2. Comparisons of common dolphin densities off the Eyre Peninsula in the eastern GAB with other regions around the world show that shelf waters off the Eyre Peninsula represent an important habitat for common dolphins. SUMMER INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: June 1st – July 1st, 2018 Filicudi WildLifeConservation is a non-profit association involved in the research andconservation of cetacean species (bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin and spermwhale) and the loggerhead sea turtle (Carettacaretta) in the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Thyrrenian Sea, Italy). FilicudiWildLife Conservation also manage a First Aid for Sea Turtles (Turtle PointFilicudi) located in Filicudi island for the rescue and care of individuals foundwith problems in the Aeolian area. The FilicudiWildLife Conservation Team is seeking 2 applicants for internships workingprimarily with environmental and education projects and office assistant at theFirst Aid for Sea Turtle in Filicudi island (Italy). These positions are unpaidand applicants are responsible for their travel and food expenses but accommodationis provided. The start date forthe Summer Internship period is June 1st, with a target end date of July1st. There is some flexibility on the starting and end dates ofinternships, but priority will be given to interns that may stay for 1 month. Intern Responsibilities &Qualifications: The internship isopen to all applicants 21 years of age or older, with an avid interest inmarine biology, zoology, general biology, policy or a related field. If theintern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they areresponsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution.Interns must be able to work for 1 month, 7 days a week, at least 40 hours perweek. Work schedule must be flexible and may include free days for enjoyingthe island. This is an unpaid position and all interns are responsible forobtaining transportation. MARINE EXPERIENTIAL LeARNING PROGRAMME IN PORTUGAL

*MARINE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAMME IN PORTUGAL* *BACKGROUND: *The Marine Environment Research Association - AIMM, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization focused on the research and conservation of marine species, running an ongoing study of cetaceans in southern Portugal (Algarve). This project aims to obtain baseline information on species occurrence, behavior, and social structure of the local cetacean populations in order to obtain scientific data to support conservation measures and inform marine management policies. The main species observed are Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), although other species such as Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) can also be sighted. AIMM Participants are young, hard-working individuals who are willing to contribute to the association and support on-going activities, while experiencing fieldwork at sea, learning data collection and processing methodologies, and being a part of AIMM's team of researchers and marine biologists for a period of time. All team members and participants share accommodation, house tasks, knowledge and experience in an environmental friendly and multicultural environment. Participants have the additional option to enrich their time with AIMM by beginning or improving their SCUBA skills with a PADI-certified instructor. *WHERE:* Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal *WHEN:* The field season lasts from May 1 - October 31, 2017. The minimum attendance is 7 days, preferably starting on a Monday. *FIELDWORK: *The field trips are conducted in AIMM's research vessel, Ketos, or in opportunistic platforms (commercial dolphin-watching boats). Fieldwork is dependent on weather conditions and seat availability in the dolphin-watching boats. Field days can be intense, especially in the peak of summer, but are fulfilling and good fun. The participants will be trained to: · Conduct on-board surveys of marine species occurrence; · Record effort tracks on a handheld GPS; · Collect data on behavior, group size, species, etc.; · Collection of photo to photo-identification, acoustic recording, and underwater videos while on-board. *DATA ANALYSIS: *This will be conducted on a daily basis and will entail entering data into established databases and spreadsheets, photo-identification processing, and preliminary data interpretation. *PROGRAMME FEES:* AIMM is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from our volunteers, partners, and conservation-minded people like you so that we may continue our important research and education programs in the Algarve. This programme requires a monetary contribution which is used to off-set the cost of accommodation and running a non-profit.
