Internship: Behavioral Ecology of Bottlenose Dolphins in the Florida Keys Period of Service: September 12-Ocotber12, 2006 Details of Position: Work will involve assisting doctoral student with field research on bottlenose dolphins in the Lower Florida Keys. Responsibilities will include assisting in collection of behavior and environmental data while on water. Off water duties will include data entry, management and analysis in addition to equipment maintenance. Interns will receive training in field and lab techniques used in cetacean research. Requirements: Must be upper division undergraduate or recent graduate from a scientific discipline. Prefer students with an interest in continuing education beyond Bachelors. Previous field experience a plus. Must be able to handle long hours (8+ per day) under extreme heat (up to 37 degrees Celsius). Positions are voluntary. All work conducted will be done under a Letter of Confirmation for Level B Harassment (MMPA 1972). Employment Opportunity Museum Director The Whale Museum Friday Harbor, WA USA POSITION: Museum Director. Full-time position starting at $36-$40,000 per year dependent upon applicant qualifications. The Whale Museum is a 27-year-old 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization located in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State, USA. The Museum employs a staff of ten (+/- 4). The Whale Museum's mission is to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. The Museum is housed in a 114-year-old historic building containing a natural history exhibit hall, store, gallery, public meeting space and administrative offices. Research focuses on supporting critically needed scientific information about whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem that can be used in efforts to restore whale species and preserve ecosystem diversity in the region. Through education The Whale Museum strives to increase public knowledge about whales, other marine species and the ecological processes that support them, in order to promote more responsible environmental stewardship practices. These educational goals are achieved through the presentation of artifacts and exhibits in the Museum, special programs for K-12 and adults, and by educationally engaging the public in the wildlife environments of the San Juan Islands; at parks, along the shorelines, and out on the water. The "Museum Director" is accountable for the sound operations of The Whale Museum and is responsible to the Board of Directors. Dear Marmamers, Have you ever been frustrated by the traditional publication process? Have you ever wondered who your reviewers were? Have you ever wished the review of your paper was opened to the wider scientific community for comments and discussions? Welcome to Open Access 2.0! The Public Library of Science has successfully provided open access publishing to biologists for the past 3 years now (PLoS Biology's impact factor is now 14.7; you can learn more about the philosophy behind Open Access at http://www.plos.org/oa/index.html) PLoS is launching a new journal, PLoS ONE, which is approaching scientific publishing from a new angle. PLoS ONE is a system that will allow large numbers of papers to be refereed and published with as few unnecessary barriers as possible. Therefore, PLoS ONE has a very simple criterion for publication: PLoS ONE will publish all reports of well-performed science that are submitted. In addition, papers in PLoS ONE will need to conform to some basic standards of scientific communication. For example they must describe experimental methods in sufficient detail for them to be repeatable; their conclusions must not be overstated; and these papers will need to be written in intelligible English.Publications in PLoS ONE will not be an end in themselves but rather the beginning of a conversation with the scientific community. A system for post-publication annotation and comment will allow readers to engage in discussions with authors and other users. This will act as a form of open peer review, a concept that has been much talked about but which few journals have put in place. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Advances in Biologging Technology and the Emergence of Apex Marine Predators as Prolific Ocean Samplers Session at the American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting San Francisco, California, December 11-15th, 2006 Conveners: Steven Bograd (NOAA, SWFSC), Barbara Block (Stanford), Dan Costa (UCSC) Recent developments in telemetry and biologging technology have greatly enhanced our ability to enlist apex marine predators to sample their environment. These “animal oceanographers” identify critical foraging habitat, migration corridors, and regions of high occupancy, i.e., biological hot spots. They also provide a significant amount of physical data from some of the most dynamic and biologically important regions of the ocean. In this context, the Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) program has contributed more than 2000 animal tracks, 100,000 animal tracking days, and nearly 2,000,000 water column profiles from electronic tags deployed on 23 marine species throughout the North Pacific Ocean. TOPP and other international biologging programs have demonstrated the efficacy and reliability of electronically-tagged animals to greatly enhance operational ocean observing systems, both in the coastal and open ocean, and to provide large quantities of highly-resolved oceanographic data for hydrographic archives and for use in ocean model validation and assimilation. Continued use of tagged marine animals will allow for improved monitoring and management of critical biological habitat, and will augment developing ocean observing systems. This session will showcase the latest developments in tag technology and oceanographic data collection by apex marine predators from various parts of the world ocean. Dear colleagues, This is the second announcement for the Workshop on: INCIDENTAL CATCH OF NON-TARGETED MARINE SPECIES IN THE WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN: PROBLEMS AND MITIGATION MEASURES - 3 - 15 NOVEMBER 2006, MAYOTTE The event will take place in Mayotte at Sakouli Hotel (eastern part of the island, http://www.anthurium.com/regions/mayotte/sakouli/sakoulieng.html) for the room sessions (13 & 14 November) and at N'Gouja Hotel Le Jardin Maoré (south part of the island, http://www.hotel-jardin-maore.com/site_en/index_en.php) for the field session (15 November). WANTED: EXPERIENCED MARINE MAMMAL PERSONNEL The Marine Team (www.marineteam.com) is looking for suitably qualified personnel for contracts offshore. This involves recording marine mammal sightings and to ensure that oil exploration activities comply with environmental guidelines issued by the governing bodies. This work is vessel based and most contracts last 4-6 weeks. Daily rates of pay depend upon location and contract. The following personnel are required: a.. Marine Mammal Observers b..
