Dear colleagues, We are delighted to announce our upcoming Workshop on Animal Movement Analysis in the Marine Environment: https://marcfer3.wixsite.com/website When and where: 19–23 May 2025 in Funchal, Madeira Island (Portugal). A remarkable team of researchers—John Fieberg, Marie Auger-Méthé, Brett McClintock, and Inês Silva—will lead this event, focusing on the unique challenges of studying marine species and offering practical solutions to overcome data complexities. This represents an excellent opportunity for those working with satellite telemetry/biologging data from marine mammals. During the workshop, we will tackle some of the most common issues when dealing with data collected during tag deployments in marine mammals, such as data autocorrelation, data missingness, location errors and irregular sampling intervals. This hands-on training will equip researchers with tools to predict and analyse animal movements more accurately and gain insights into habitat use. By the end of the course, participants should: *Be able to clean and organise data collected by satellite tags *Apply state-space models to correct Argos location data (mainly used to track marine animals) *Apply Hidden Markov Models to infer behaviours from telemetry data *Understand the benefits and limitations of Resource Selection Functions and Step Selection Functions to infer habitat use and preferences. *Apply continuous time models to infer space use, taking into consideration autocorrelation and the irregular sampling intervals typical in marine mammals tracking data We look forward to welcoming you to Madeira in May 2025! New publication: Patterns of paternity in New Caledonian humpback whales

Royal Society Open Science, 12(1). <https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.241424> doi: 10.1098/rsos.241424<https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.241424> Abstract: Variation in reproductive success is a fundamental prerequisite for sexual selection to act upon a trait. Assessing such variation is crucial in understanding a species’ mating system and offers insights into population growth. Parentage analyses in cetaceans are rare, and the underlying forces of sexual selection acting on their mating behaviours remain poorly understood. Here, we combined 25 years of photo-identification and genetic data to assess patterns of male reproductive success and reproductive autonomy of the New Caledonian (Oceania, South Pacific) humpback whale breeding population. Paternity analysis of 177 mother–offspring pairs and 936 males revealed low variation in male reproductive success (average 1.17 offspring per father) relative to other polygynous species. The observed skew in success was higher than expected under random mating and skewed overall towards males (93%) without evidence of paternity over the study period. Finally, an updated male gametic mark-recapture abundance estimate of 2084 (95% confidence interval = 1761–2407, 1995–2019) fell between previous census estimates of the New Caledonian population and the wider Oceanian metapopulation. Our results provide critical insights into the mating competition of male humpback whales and population dynamics across Oceanian populations, two important factors affecting the slow recovery from whaling across the South Pacific region. NOAA Fisheries Issues Reinitiated Biological Opinion, Incidental Take Regulations, and Letters of Authorization for Navy Training and Testing in the HSTT Study Area

Dear Colleagues, Today, NOAA Fisheries announced a final rule in the Federal Register to modify existing regulations and Letters of Authorization (LOAs) under the Marine Mammal Protection Act that govern incidental take of marine mammals by the U.S. Navy in the Hawaii-Southern California Training and Testing (HSTT) Study Area. NOAA Fisheries is authorizing two additional takes of large whales by serious injury or mortality by vessel strike over the remainder of the HSTT authorization period (through December 2025). The current HSTT regulations (50 CFR Part 218, Subpart H) and LOAs authorize the take of three large whales by serious injury or mortality by vessel strike. This modification is based upon new information regarding U.S. Navy vessel strikes in southern California. Given the new information, the final rule includes a revised analysis of vessel strike risk in the HSTT Study Area and authorization of two additional takes by serious injury or mortality for large whales from vessel strikes, beyond that authorized in the 2020 HSTT final rule <https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/07/10/2020-14181/taking-and-…> . NOAA Fisheries has also issued a reinitiated Endangered Species Act (ESA) section 7 biological opinion on this action. Based on our biological opinion effects analyses, we conclude that the proposed action would likely adversely affect, but is not likely to jeopardize, the continued existence of any ESA-listed species in the proposed action area. We have also concluded that the proposed action is not likely to destroy or adversely modify designated critical habitat for any of the ESA-listed species affected by HSTT activities. We are pleased to announce that the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Marine Mammal Symposium (SEAMAMMS) will be held in Jacksonville, FL on April 4-6, 2025. This year's symposium will be co-hosted by the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University. The deadline for abstract submission is Sunday, Feb. 23 (midnight). Authors will be notified of abstract acceptance and format (oral, speed, poster) by Wed., Mar. 5. SEAMAMMS is a long-standing, regional, scientific marine mammal meeting that is held annually. This symposium is open to all presenters and is student-oriented. SEAMAMMS serves as a significant and supportive venue for graduate and undergraduate students to present their research and network with mentors and experts in the marine mammal field. Preference will be given to marine mammal research conducted in the mid-Atlantic and southeast US or conducted by students and other researchers from this region. Presentation formats include oral, speed talks, and posters; awards will be given to the best student presenter in each format at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Summer 2025 Internship Opportunity The Center for Coastal Studies is a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting scientific research with emphasis on marine mammals of the western North Atlantic and on the coastal and marine habitats and resources of the Gulf of Maine. CCS has been conducting research and marine and coastal educational programs on Cape Cod for 49 years. Education Responsibilities-Intern/s will assist with environmental education programs, including on-site programs, off-site programs, and festivals, including CCS’s signature summer week of events: Whale Week: A Celebration of the Sea, and Whale Camp. Interns will assist in staffing the Center’s SEASpace Marine Discovery Center, and beach pop-up tents; designing and delivering presentations, answering questions about CCS, marine animals (especially whales, seals and sharks) and ocean conservation issues, and other general duties. Position is paid part-time (20hrs per week). Interns must have their own transportation. Limited shared housing is available for candidates who qualify. Qualifications- • The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from an accredited college or university. • Preference will be given to students or recent graduates working towards environmental studies, education, marine science, biology or other related fields. • Intern should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. • Intern should be a self-starter able to take responsibility for completing projects. • Students that are adaptable, responsible, hard working, willing to learn, and have attention to detail are encouraged to apply. • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. • Must be comfortable working with all ages, especially children 5-10 years old. • Must be comfortable working outside in all conditions. • Must be comfortable working with and handling marine species. • Must be able to carry at least 30lbs over short distances. • Interns must be able to commit to at least two-three months; preferred start date-end date mid June to mid August, but dates are flexible based on school schedules. • Interns must work a minimum of 20 hours per week. • Schedule is flexible but intern may have to work some weekends and evenings. Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Internship – Coastal Cambodia Khmer Ocean Life (KOL) is a UK non-profit in partnership with a local NGO Samaky Organization in Cambodia, based in the coastal town of Kampot. The organisation focuses on supporting the conservation of marine mammal species (Irrawaddy dolphins, Indo-pacific humpback dolphins, Indo-pacific finless porpoises, and dugongs), and their habitats, through research, capacity building, community collaboration, and outreach. We are looking for marine mammal research and conservation interns to join the team who can commit to two months in 2025. We conduct our work year-round, and applicants are encouraged to apply any time, beginning as early as January, this year. One-month applicants will be considered and long-term applicants are encouraged to apply. Internships are customized to each intern based on personal and academic skills and interests, and interns are encouraged to specialize in targeted areas of conservation including social media management and ecological research. We are open to collaborations with universities for the completion of a thesis or associated report. You are also welcome to conduct your own research or outreach project with us, depending on your interest, skill set, and length of stay. Our work is multifaceted and extends into multiple areas of conservation. While a large part of our project activities and intern training involves data collection and analysis, we prioritize internal and external capacity building for our team members and the local community. Prioritizing the empowerment of community members allows us to engage with conservation work in a variety of ways and become immersed in science and local life.
