Hello Ocean Watch will be delivering the JNCC accredited Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) training course on 27-28th February 09:00-17:00. The course will be delivered in Mevagissey, Cornwall. The course will include one and a half days of classroom learning about marine mammals, underwater acoustics, impacts of underwater noise, marine mammal mitigation and working as an MMO. Delegates will then put the skills to practice on a vessel launching from Mevagissey harbour on the afternoon of day 2. New Publication: Long-Term Demographic Trends of Near Threatened Coastal Dolphins

(2025), Long-Term Demographic Trends of Near Threatened Coastal Dolphins Living in an Urban Estuary. Ecol Evol, 15: e70834. https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.70834 ABSTRACT Understanding population demography of threatened species and how they vary in relation to natural and anthropogenic stressors is essential for effective conservation. We used a long-term photographic capture-recapture dataset (1993–2020) of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in the highly urbanised Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary (ADS), South Australia, to estimate key demographic parameters and their variability over time. These parameters were analysed in relation to environmental variables used as indicators of local and large-scale climatic events. Our findings indicate that apparent survival was high (0.98–0.99) and did not vary seasonally. Estimates of abundance were not directly related to environmental variables but were linked to seasonal temporary emigration. Abundance peaked in summer with an average of 85.37 dolphins (SD = 30.23) and was lowest in winter, with 68.57 (SD = 24.70) individuals. Site fidelity at the population level was low, but lagged identification rates revealed a population of approximately 28 individuals at any one time. Trend analysis suggests an increase in dolphin abundance from 1993 and persistence of the population over decades despite significant urbanisation, although numbers have declined in more recent years. Further research is needed to understand the cumulative impacts leading to this population decline and to assess its future viability under different management scenarios. Conservation strategies aimed at increasing reproductive rates and promoting connectivity to adjacent waters are likely to be more effective in reversing population declines. Acoustic Data Loggers Available We still have 2 of the SNAP recorders available we purchased in 2021 from Loggerhead Instruments to use as part of a specific humpback whale/killer whale research project. Most were used one day to record vocalizations offshore. We don't need this many hydrophones for our research, so we're selling some so that other marine mammal projects can put them to good use. They're not helping anyone on our shelves. The units are self contained in pvc canisters, battery operated, and store data on SD cards. We had some placed on ledges attached to weights and others suspended in the water column from floats. They have been booted up, function checked, and are in "like new" condition. JNCC MMO training - remote delivery and new online course

A new online version of the JNCC-recognised MMO course is available. The course is self-navigated at your own pace - as a guide it is estimated that it would take the equivalent of 2 full days to complete the course. Access to the course lasts 12 months (can be extended for a small annual fee) and there are comprehensive downloadable resources for you to keep. There are revision questions throughout the course to consolidate your learning, and an exercise on data recording that you will get personal feedback on to ensure you understand the data recording protocols. The final assessment.comprises multiple choice and drag-and-drop questions (re-sits are possible if you don't pass first time). For those who prefer to attend live training, spaces are also available on a JNCC MMO course with remote delivery by Zoom, on 27th and 28th February 2025. Zoom sessions will be a mixture of lectures and exercises, over 1.5 days. There is an online multiple choice assessment to be done at your convenience after the Zoom sessions (re-sits are possible if you don't pass first time). Each delegate gets a comprehensive resource pack and individual feedback on their exercises and the assessment. The course is taught by an instructor with over 25 years' experience of training MMOs, working as an MMO, analysing MMO data and being involved with the development of JNCC guidelines. The course will cover all the information needed for work as a Marine Mammal Observer in UK waters: 1) Impacts of noise on marine mammals 2) Introduction to activities that require mitigation 3) Legislation protecting marine mammals and marine licensing 4) Detailed examination of the suite of JNCC mitigation guidelines for different offshore activities 5) Data recording and reporting requirements 6) Visual monitoring and distance estimation 7) Overview of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) 8) Working as an MMO / PAM operator 9) Identification of marine mammals On successful completion of the course you will receive JNCC-recognised certification, which is required for work as an MMO in UK waters. The cost of the MMO course (online or remote delivery) is £150 (150GBP), which includes comprehensive resources and ongoing support available after the course. New publication on Contaminant-Associated Disruption of the Skin Transcriptome in the Endangered St. Lawrence Estuary Beluga

Hello everyone, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce and share our recent paper titled: Contaminant-Associated Disruption of the Skin Transcriptome in the Endangered St. Lawrence Estuary Beluga Antoine É. Simond, Véronique Lesage, Jonathan Verreault, Lisa Loseto, Magali Houde, Ashley Elliott, Marie Noël, and Tanya M. Brown Abstract The St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) population in Canada is Endangered, and endocrine disrupting contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and other halogenated flame retardants, have been identified as a threat to the recovery of this population. Here, potential impacts of these contaminants on SLE beluga were evaluated by comparing skin transcriptome profiles and biological pathways between this population and a population less exposed to contaminants (Eastern Beaufort Sea) used as a reference. Differential gene expression analysis indicated potential seasonal or geography-related (Arctic vs temperate regions) effects on the skin transcriptome. Among the gene transcripts that were associated with Σ31PCB (123 genes), Σ29PBDE (198 genes), HBB (347 genes), and PBEB (126 genes) blubber concentrations, several were related to immune response pathways. In addition, 18 toxicology-related gene transcripts selected from the literature were correlated with organohalogen concentrations and were used to derive new threshold values in beluga skin for potential biological effects of ΣPCB (1,500 ng/g lw), ΣPBDE (52 ng/g lw), and two other flame retardants, i.e., HBB (1.2 ng/g lw) and PBEB (0.04 ng/g lw). Results suggest that exposure to these organohalogens pose a risk to the immune system of SLE beluga. Dear MARMAMers, The Aquatic Species Team of the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), which coordinates also the ASCOBANS Agreement, Sharks MOU, IOSEA Marine Turtles MOU and Dugong MOU, is offering internships throughout 2023. Following a request of the list moderator to provide more information on how this internship opportunity relates to marine mammal research and conservation, here some more information on CMS: As an environmental treaty of the United Nations, CMS (www.cms.int<http://www.cms.int>) provides a global platform for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals and their habitats. CMS brings together the States through which migratory animals pass, the Range States, and lays the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures throughout a migratory range. As the only global convention specializing in the conservation of migratory species, their habitats and migration routes, CMS complements and co-operates with a number of other international organizations, NGOs and partners in the media as well as in the corporate sector. The CMS Appendices cover around 130 aquatic (marine and freshwater) species, including 51 species of cetaceans, 6 species of pinnipeds, 4 species of sirenians, 2 species of otters, and the polar bear, besides many species of migratory fish and reptiles. The Aquatic Species Team of the Secretariat is responsible for the coordination of several daughter agreements established under the umbrella of CMS, as well as coordinating the implementation of Decisions, Resolutions, and Concerted Actions from the Conference of the Parties (COP) related to aquatic species. These cover topics such as bycatch, marine noise, marine wildlife tourism, or aquatic wild meat. The Team facilitates the implementation of the mandates for many activities related to aquatic species assigned to the Secretariat the Scientific Council, and prepares the draft Resolutions and Decisions related to aquatic species that will be discussed at the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties in October 2023. Internships with the CMS Secretariat provide a unique opportunity to see how conservation policy works at international level, and allow interns to contribute to the conservation outcomes of the Convention. New Publication: Genetic Evidence of Killer Whale Predation on White Sharks in Australia

Dear all, On behalf of my co-authors, I am excited to announce the publication of our manuscript titled "Genetic Evidence of Killer Whale Predation on White Sharks in Australia" in Ecology and Evolution. Abstract: Killer whales (Orcinus orca) have been documented to prey on white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias), in some cases causing localised shark displacement and triggering ecological cascades. Notably, a series of such predation events have been reported from South Africa over the last decade, with killer whales specifically targeting sharks' liver. However, observations of these interactions are rare, and knowledge of their frequency across the world's oceans remains limited. In October 2023, a 4.7 m (total length) white shark carcass washed ashore in southeastern Australia, coinciding with reports from citizen scientists of killer whales hunting a large, unidentified prey item in the area. Visual inspection of the carcass revealed that the liver, digestive, and reproductive organs were missing, and the presence of four distinctive bite wounds, one of which was characteristic of killer whale liver extraction as seen in South Africa. Genomic analyses performed on swabs taken from the bite wounds confirmed the presence of killer whale DNA in the major bite area, while the other bites were embedded with genetic material from the scavenging broadnose sevengill shark (Notorynchus cepedianus). These results provide confirmed evidence of killer whale predation on white sharks in Australia and the likely selective consumption of the liver, suggesting predations of this nature are more globally prevalent than currently assumed.
