Marine Mammal Conservation Internship Submission period: Open through October 18, 2024, 11:59 PM ET, or until we reach a maximum of 50 applications, whichever comes first. Temporary, full-time, paid  Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s North American office is offering a 12-week, entry-level Marine Mammal Conservation Internship to candidates with little to no prior experience. This opportunity will help to build skills relevant to the field of marine conservation while providing interns with insight into the inner workings of a non-profit as well as job skills transferable to any field.   This position is designed for those who do not yet have experience in marine mammal conservation and outreach. We will prioritize candidates who do not have practical experience (internship, significant volunteering, employment) in this field outside of a classroom setting. Applicants should be eager to dive into new experiences and enjoy having a variety of tasks to work on. This position will help to assist staff in two key program areas: Marine Animal Rescue and Response and Education.<https://us.whales.org/about/get-involved/#MARR> Occasional opportunities to see whales at sea may also be possible, though no part of this position requires being in the water.  Successful candidates will gain transferable skills in effective communication and public speaking, project management, developing and delivering presentations and other interpretive resources, working on a close-knit team, and record keeping.  We have one open position for this temporary, full-time, paid internship. The internship dates are November 2024 – February 2025. Each of the successful candidates will be assisting all WDC programming, including Marine Animal Rescue and Response and Education & Outreach.  LOGISTICS: Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they are legally eligible to work in the U.S. by the proposed starting date. Successful candidates will need to make their own arrangements, as needed, for housing and transportation to and from the WDC office in Plymouth, MA, USA. Please note that the cost of living for the Plymouth area is above the national average when considering this role. Successful candidates are expected to work 40 hours a week (including occasional evening and/or weekend work) for the 12-week period of the program; they will be compensated at a rate of $15/hour.   Applicants must be 18 years or older by the internship start date and fluent in English. WDC will assist interested students in obtaining credits for the program through their college or university. CDC COVID recommendations are reviewed at frequent intervals and guide the updating of WDC's protocols to keep employees safe. Internship responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Researching and exploring potential outreach and education partnership opportunities * Writing blogs, creating social media content, and managing program websites * Developing outreach materials and grade school lesson plans connected to science standards * Delivering educational programs to K-12 students as well as adults/families at community events * Responding to stranded live and dead marine mammals in the field, including assisting with health assessments and examinations to determine cause of death * Answering WDC’s rescue hotline and handling reports from callers * Ensuring marine animal response preparedness by inventorying and restocking equipment, cleaning gear, fueling vehicles, etc. The programs this internship supports are as follows: Marine Animal Rescue and Response  WDC’s Marine Animal Rescue and Response Program (MARR) is responsible for responding to stranded marine mammals along about 200 miles of Massachusetts coastline. Interns will learn the skills needed to respond to pinnipeds (seals) and cetaceans (whales, porpoises, and dolphins), including standard data collection and data input (Level A and human interaction evaluations) and managing supply inventory and ordering materials.  It's important to note that stranding events are unpredictable and hands-on experience and species encountered will vary. Education  WDC’s formal and informal educational efforts include creating lesson plans, facilitating inquiry-based activities, making presentations, managing outreach events, and more. New Study Investigates Spatial Risk Exposure of Floating Marine Litter to Cetaceans and Sea Turtles

Dear Colleagues, we are happy to share with you the new information on the recently published study on '*Potential Risk of Floating Marine Litter to Cetaceans and Sea Turtles: A Review of Spatial Risk Exposure Assessments*' Arcangeli A., Gregorietti M., Pasanisi E., Santini E., Campana I., and Sarà G. (2024) Potential Risk of Floating Marine Litter to Cetaceans and Sea Turtles: A Review of Spatial Risk Exposure Assessments. *Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review*, 2024, 62, 376-403. The study highlights the severe threat that marine litter poses on cetaceans and sea turtles, species indicators of ocean health. Despite the well-documented risks, the integration of these assessments into marine management strategies remains incomplete. Understanding where and when cetaceans and sea turtles are most exposed to marine debris is critical for advancing conservation efforts and reducing potential harm. The review contextualized the concept of risk and analyzed 415 studies from 2011 to 2022. However, only 23 specifically addressed Risk Exposure Assessments (REA) for cetaceans and sea turtles, with 57% of these studies focusing on the Western Mediterranean, revealing significant geographic gaps. Based on the literature, the study synthesized areas and seasons of higher exposure risk to floating litter in the Mediterranean. The research highlights substantial variability in REA methods and emphasizes the need for standardized protocols to fill gaps in data availability, geographic coverage, and species selection. The authors recommend a spatial-contextual approach to enhance long-term monitoring, especially in under-surveyed regions, to support more effective mitigation strategies. New paper: Evidence for seasonal migration by a cryptic top predator of the deep sea

Movement Ecology. https://doi.org/10.1186/s40462-024-00500-x Abstract: Background In ecosystems influenced by strong seasonal variation in insolation, the fitness of diverse taxa depends on seasonal movements to track resources along latitudinal or elevational gradients. Deep pelagic ecosystems, where sunlight is extremely limited, represent Earth’s largest habitable space and yet ecosystem phenology and effective animal movement strategies in these systems are little understood. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) provide a valuable acoustic window into this world: the echolocation clicks they produce while foraging in the deep sea are the loudest known biological sounds on Earth and convey detailed information about their behavior. Methods We analyze seven years of continuous passive acoustic observations from the Central California Current System, using automated methods to identify both presence and demographic information from sperm whale echolocation clicks. By integrating empirical results with individual-level movement simulations, we test hypotheses about the movement strategies underlying sperm whales’ long-distance movements in the Northeast Pacific. Results We detect foraging sperm whales of all demographic groups year-round in the Central California Current System, but also identify significant seasonality in frequency of presence. Among several previously hypothesized movement strategies for this population, empirical acoustic observations most closely match simulated results from a population undertaking a “seasonal resource-tracking migration”, in which individuals move to track moderate seasonal-latitudinal variation in resource availability. Discussion Our findings provide evidence for seasonal movements in this cryptic top predator of the deep sea. We posit that these seasonal movements are likely driven by tracking of deep-sea resources, based on several lines of evidence: (1) seasonal-latitudinal patterns in foraging sperm whale detection across the Northeast Pacific; (2) lack of demographic variation in seasonality of presence; and (3) the match between simulations of seasonal resource-tracking migration and empirical results. We show that sperm whales likely track oceanographic seasonality in a manner similar to many surface ocean predators, but with dampened seasonal-latitudinal movement patterns. These findings shed light on the drivers of sperm whales’ long-distance movements and the shrouded phenology of the deep-sea ecosystems in which they forage. Cachalote Consortium 2024 - Going Virtual!

Dear colleagues, You are invited! The Cachalote Consortium Workshop 2024 will take place on the 9th of November at the Biennial conference of the Society for Marine Mammalogy in Perth, Australia. Due to the global interest in the workshop and our goal of making this event as inclusive as possible, the workshop will be entirely virtual, with a social gathering afterwards for those in town for the conference. About the workshop. The Cachalote Consortium was created in 2005 with the goal of bringing sperm whale researchers from multiple disciplines together to promote understanding of global patterns of sperm whale biology, ecology, and conservation. The 2024 workshop continues this tradition and will provide a forum for presenting progress, trading ideas, exchanging and standardizing methodologies, identifying knowledge gaps, inspiring new collaborations, and fostering the next generation of sperm whale scientists. In parallel with the theme of this year’s Biennial, we are encouraging you to share your ideas on culture and conservation of sperm whale societies and to share progress on your use of open science and new technologies that promote understanding of sperm whales at multiple scales: social, regional, and global. Final Incidental Take Regulations for the Atlantic Shores South Project, Offshore New Jersey

Good Morning Colleagues, Today, NOAA Fisheries announced the final regulations to govern the incidental harassment of marine mammals related to the construction of the Atlantic Shores South Project, Offshore New Jersey. As required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), the final regulations include mandatory mitigation measures undertaken by the wind developer that will ensure the “least practicable adverse impact” on marine mammals and their habitat, as well as monitoring and reporting measures to better understand those impacts. NOAA Fisheries determined that underwater noise generated by the Project’s activities over a five-year period may result in the take of marine mammals, in the form of Level A harassment (small, but permanent, loss of hearing sensitivity) and/or Level B (behavioral) harassment). Impacts to a small number of North Atlantic right whales are expected to be limited to short-term behavioral disturbance (Level B harassment). No mortality or serious injury of any marine mammal species or stock is expected nor would be authorized. NOAA Fisheries determined that the number and manner of take that may be authorized in a Letter of Authorization will have a negligible impact on all affected marine mammal species and stocks. NOAA Fisheries is committed to careful review and use of the best available scientific information in satisfying the requirements of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This regulatory action is part of NOAA’s ongoing work to ensure the nation’s deployment of offshore wind energy is done in a manner that avoids and minimizes impacts to protected resources and their habitats. Hello, Colleagues and I from Scotland, the USA and Mexico are running a full day workshop at the upcoming Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals which is being held in Perth, Western Australia. The conference theme is bycatch and entanglement and we would be very grateful if you could include the below message about this in a post to MARMAM list members at your earliest convenience. SMM 2024 workshop announcement and invitation: Disentangling a whale of a problem: How fisher-led approaches are critical to solving entanglement As part of the 25th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals which will be held in Perth, Western Australia this November, the Scottish Entanglement Alliance<https://scottishentanglement.org/>, the Scottish Creel Fisherman's Federation<http://www.scottishcreelfishermensfederation.co.uk/> and the Mexico Marine Wildlife Rescue Center<https://www.mmwrc.org/> will be delivering a full-day workshop titled 'Disentangling a whale of a problem: How fisher-led approaches are critical to solving entanglement' on Saturday 9th November. A recent international knowledge exchange between Scotland, Mexico and the USA consistently highlighted a lack of (1) inclusion of fishers as citizen scientists, (2) consultation with industry and transparency in policy and management decision-making processes, and (3) understanding of the practicalities of fishing and therefore the suitability of proposed and enforced mitigations in entanglement research. This is pushing some fishing sectors to breaking point, without adding to the understanding of this cryptic threat or scale at which mitigations have or have not reduced entanglement risk. What also became clear during this exchange is that successful mitigation lies in bottom-up, fisher-led approaches, and inclusion of fisher knowledge and culture in future entanglement policy and research will be essential. We will highlight issues and promote discussion around entanglement risk across different regions, fisheries and gear types globally; under-reporting of entanglement events and incentives to improve reporting rates; entanglement response (rescue and necropsy); burdens and risks placed on fishers and disentanglement teams at the forefront of entanglement response; fisheries mismanagement leading to distrust between stakeholder groups, challenges in finding suitable solutions where resources are limited; and the potential for poor policy decisions to lead to increased entanglement risk. We will have a selection of international speakers from across industry, research and rescue, and a number of interactive sessions and panel discussions. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is currently accepting applications for winter/spring 2025 Marine Mammal Stranding Internships. IFAW Marine Mammal Stranding Internship Winter/Spring Session 2025 (Middle of January, 2025 - Last Week of May, 2025) Complete Applications due: October 15th, 2024 Program Background IFAW is an international non-profit organization. This internship is based out of our International Operations Center in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, USA. IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR) program is a federally authorized program dedicated to marine mammal stranding response on Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Our program strives to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat by improving the rescue and humane care of stranded marine mammals, advancing stranding science, and increasing public awareness through education. Cape Cod is a marine mammal stranding "hot spot," with an average of over 315 strandings occurring each year. These strandings include live and dead seals, whales, porpoises, and dolphins. In addition to stranding response, IFAW's MMR division has developed the Cetacean Intensive Care Unit (CICU) located at the Dolphin Rescue Center in Orleans, MA. CICU is a short-term holding facility (96 hours) that aims to provide rehabilitative care to dolphins and porpoises experiencing acute effects of stranding. Stranding Intern Duties * Stranding hotline coverage: answer calls, document reports, educate callers, dispatch volunteers, complete associated paperwork and enter data. * Marine mammal stranding response & necropsy: assist staff with all aspects of marine mammal stranding response, including live animal health assessment and supportive care, biological data collection, post-mortem examinations and sampling in both field and laboratory settings. * CICU operations: assist staff with aspects of CICU operations, including animal care (i.e. in-water support, assist during procedures, monitoring animal behavior etc.), CICU education and outreach, CICU readiness and cleaning, etc. Please note experiences will be opportunistic as cases arise. The candidate will gain credible experience in data collection, stranding response, formal and informal education, marine policy development, grant management and budgeting, conservation marketing, and project management. Specifically, the Fellow will manage a project working with the WDC staff as well as our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council which includes representatives from diverse backgrounds and regional marine conservation and research organizations. The goal of the project is to create a shareable pathway for WDC and its partners seeking to make this field more accessible and representative of all individuals. LOGISTICS: Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they are legally eligible to work in the U.S. by the proposed starting date. Successful candidates will need to make their own arrangements, as needed, for housing and transportation to and from the WDC office in Plymouth, MA, USA. Please note that the cost of living for the Plymouth area is above the national average when considering this role. Candidates should be advised that WDC’s office is dog-friendly; up to three dogs may be in the office on any given day. As our work sometimes includes interactions with large crowds of people as well as direct contact with wild animals, we ask that our staff be fully vaccinated (including against COVID-19) unless employee qualifies for exception under applicable law relating to disability or sincerely held religious belief. CDC communicable disease recommendations are reviewed at frequent intervals and guide the updating of WDC's protocols to keep employees safe. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Successful candidates are expected to work 40 hours a week (including occasional evening and/or weekend work) for the 10-month period of the program; they will be compensated at a maximum rate of $24.65 per hour, and not to exceed total payment of $42,645. Candidates must: * Be at least 18 years old by the start of the position. * Be fluent in English. * Have effective verbal and/or written communications skills. * Work well with diverse audiences and teams. * Have an interest in education/outreach initiatives. * Act effectively as a member of a close-knit team. * Be able to problem-solve in unanticipated situations. * Have an attention to detail and follow policies and procedures. * Possess a valid driver’s license. * Be able to pass a background check. * Be able to lift or move heavy objects (around 50 lbs) and work outside in adverse weather conditions. * Be legally able to work in the United States. Fellowship responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Investigating and identifying barriers of access to the field of marine mammal science and conservation and identifying mechanisms to improve access to this field. * Researching and coordinating collaborations with community partners. * Working with WDC’s DEIB Advisory Council and consultants to expand the preliminary roadmap of improving accessibility to the field of marine mammal science and conservation. * Developing and disseminating outreach materials including, but not limited to, writing blogs and creating social media content. * Supporting the education team in delivering programs to K-12 students as well as adults/families at community events with a focus on under-resourced communities. * Attending appropriate conferences and workshops on behalf of WDC. * Supporting responses to stranded live and dead marine mammals in the field, including assisting with health assessments and examinations to determine cause of death. * Supporting WDC policy initiatives including efforts to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. * Assisting in the application, management, and reporting on grants.
