Sci Rep 13, 11861 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-38793-4 Abstract: Since the attribution of the bio-duck call to Antarctic minke whales (AMW Balaenoptera bonaerensis), different studies have retrospectively identified several bio-duck call types at various sites throughout the Southern Hemisphere. The function of their vocal behavior however, remains largely unknown. Further insights into their repertoire usage may help to reveal the function of their calls. Here, we use passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) data collected across six locations throughout the Weddell Sea (WS) in 2013 and from PALAOA Station (Ekström Ice Shelf, eastern WS) in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2013, we detected 11 bio-duck call types throughout the WS between May and December, with additional acoustic activity in February on the western recorder AMW calls fell into four general call clusters. Seasonal patterns of calls showed variability between locations and years. Furthermore, this is the first study to show that similar to other baleen whale species, AMWs also produce songs. As a result, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) studies and environmental risk assessment work have expanded to consider a wider variety of marine species, such as marine mammals, turtles, fishes, and invertebrates, as well as anthropogenic sound sources. Understanding the science of marine acoustics and its policy applications requires highly specialized knowledge and experience in physics and bioacoustics (how animals use and are affected by sound). To answer the call, BOEM launched the Center for Marine Acoustics (CMA) in 2020 to build its expertise, strengthening the Bureau’s role in managing and understanding underwater sound. The CMA provides expertise and leadership to drive best practices, expand research on underwater sound, seek policy improvements, and improve messaging related to marine acoustic issues. This session is hosted by the CMA and invites presentations on research and development into the application of underwater acoustic monitoring, measurements, and noise mitigation. Topics may include but are not limited to passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), animal-borne bio-logging tags, soundscape ecology, noise mitigation tools, and developing guidance and regulations toward underwater noise management. Sensors that measure biological species and processes are commercially available and many new studies have been published on their application to studying ocean biology in the last five years. Bio-acoustic, bio-optic, imaging and video camera devices mounted on autonomous platforms can collect information on ocean wildlife in the water column in parts of the ocean that were not accessible before. Improved sensors are becoming available each year as platforms and sensors become more efficient, particularly in power consumption, allowing for longer and deeper deployments that sample biology at new space-time scales. Examples include censusing plankton biodiversity, monitoring migration phenology of sound-producing taxa, and studying food web, predator-prey, and habitat-use dynamics. This session invites abstracts on research and development into the application of autonomous vehicles and their sensors to wildlife ecology. Topics may include, but are not limited to: zooplankton or vertebrate ecology; passive acoustic monitoring; and deep sea ecology. Dear Marmam, I am looking to buy a dugong model that can be opened to see the positioning of the organs as it exists for other species such as dolphins for example. We are looking for this type of material in order to use it mainly for the training of veterinarians for necropsies of dugongs. According to the research that we have currently conducted with certain manufacturers in France, it seems that an exterior model exists but no one seems to be making an 'interior' model. If someone can provide me with contacts of companies that manufacture this type of equipment I would be grateful because I do not know where to go. Passive acoustics also offers a low impact method for environmental surveying, and is not limited to good weather or daylight hours, making it ideal for monitoring vulnerable marine animals and ecosystems. Recent, global advances in seafloor fiber-optic cables, distributed acoustic systems, surface buoys and uncrewed vehicles, coupled with developments in artificial intelligence, offer an exciting future of near-real-time evaluation of underwater soundscapes to address important environmental issues of our time. Examples of emerging underwater passive acoustic research initiatives include: offshore renewable energy, soundscape modification in support of habitat restoration, shipping and impacts of other anthropogenic sources of sound, ocean climate change impacts on marine species distributions, ocean acidification verification, and ice shelf instability for potential impact on global sea level rise. New publication - Deep Dives and High Tissue Density Increase Mean Dive Costs in California Sea Lions

"Deep dives and high tissue density increase mean dive costs in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus)." *Journal of Experimental Biology* (2023): jeb-246059. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1242/jeb.246059 Abstract: Diving is central to the foraging strategies of many marine mammals and seabirds. Still, the effect of dive depth on foraging cost remains elusive because energy expenditure is difficult to measure at fine temporal scales in wild animals. We used depth and acceleration data from eight lactating California sea lions (*Zalophus californianus*) to model body density and investigate the effect of dive depth and tissue density on rates of energy expenditure. We calculated body density in 5 s intervals from the rate of gliding descent. We modeled body density across depth in each dive, revealing high tissue densities and diving lung volumes (DLVs). DLV increased with dive depth in four individuals. We used the buoyancy calculated from dive-specific body-density models and drag calculated from swim speed to estimate metabolic power and cost of transport in 5 s intervals during descents and ascents. Deeper dives required greater mean power for round-trip vertical transit, especially in individuals with higher tissue density. These trends likely follow from increased mean swim speed and buoyant hinderance that increasingly outweighs buoyant aid in deeper dives. This suggests that deep diving is either a ‘high-cost, high-reward’ strategy or an energetically expensive option to access prey when prey in shallow waters are limited, and that poor body condition may increase the energetic costs of deep diving. These results add to our mechanistic understanding of how foraging strategy and body condition affect energy expenditure in wild breath-hold divers. Internship available at SOS Dolfijn the Netherlands

Dear members, The SOS Dolfijn Foundation in the Netherlands is a non-profit organization which is devoted to protect and conserve wild populations of porpoises and other whale species in their natural habitat. One the main activities of the organization is to offer help to cetaceans in emergency situations. In the southern part of the North Sea the harbour porpoise is the most common species and therefore the species that SOS Dolfijn is most focused on. When porpoises or other small cetaceans are found sick or wounded stranded on the beach, the SOS Dolfijn Foundation takes care of these animals and rehabilitates them with the aim to bring them back to sea. Besides the rescue and rehabilitation the organization is focused on education and scientific research. Most strandings of harbour porpoises often occur in the period January until April. Rehabilitation general takes 3-6 months before animals are completely recovered and able to be brought back to sea. SOS Dolfijn has positions available for volunteer work and internships. The organization cannot offer any financial compensation. We can help in organizing room rentals and offer an intern learning program. Tasks: Volunteers and interns become members of the SOS Dolfijn rescue team. In the first period of the rehabilitation new patients are often too sick or too weak to even swim or float by themselves. In this period the animals are supported in the water by members of the team and volunteers. Every animal has its own medical file where everything is noted in (breathing rates, behaviour, faeces, etcetera) so light administration work is part of the tasks. Assisting in preparing the feedings also. As off course cleaning of the facilities. Since new persons first get a period of training, the minimum period for an internship is 4 weeks and volunteer work require a weekly availability for the stranding season. Requirements: * You are willing and able to work day-, evening as well- as nightshifts. * You are physical capable to do the tasks (cleaning, getting in and out of the pools by yourself, wearing dry-and wetsuit) * You don't have any condition which can create any danger to yourself, the animals or other team members while working with the animals in the water or the surrounding areas. New publication: Whistle characterization of long-beaked common dolphins in the Gulf of California

PeerJ 11:e15687. http://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.15687 Abstract Long-beaked common dolphin (*Delphinus delphis bairdii*) distribution is limited to the Eastern North Pacific Ocean. Its whistle repertoire is poorly investigated, with no studies in the Gulf of California. The aim of the present study is to characterize the whistles of this species and compare their parameters with different populations. Acoustic monitoring was conducted in La Paz Bay, Gulf of California. Recordings were inspected in spectrogram view in Raven Pro, selecting good quality whistles (n = 270). In the software Luscinia, contours were manually traced to obtain whistle frequencies and duration. Number of steps, inflection points and contour type were visually determined. We calculated the descriptive statistics of the selected whistle parameters and we compared the results with a dolphins population from the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) was performed to test the intraspecific variation of the whistle parameters among groups. In the present study the mean values (± SD) of the whistle parameters were: maximum frequency = 14.13 ± 3.71 kHz, minimum frequency = 8.44 ± 2.58 kHz and duration = 0.44 ± 0.31 s. Whistles with the upsweep contour were the most common ones (34.44%). The coefficient of variation (CV) values for modulation parameters were high (>100%), in accordance with other studies on dolphins. Whistle parameters showed significant differences among groups. Finally, ending and maximum frequencies, duration and inflection points of the whistles recorded in the present study were lower compared with the parameters of the long-beaked common dolphins from the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This study provides the first whistle characterization of long-beaked common dolphin from the Gulf of California and it will help future passive acoustic monitoring applications in the study area.
